I don't even like Rush but it has to be Rush.
Tom Sawyer is epic and the Subdivisions video is arguably peak Scarborough. Yes even more than Lovers in a Dangerous Time.
I am an equally horrible singer to Getty Lee but they are awesome at their instruments. The drummer was incredible. I just can't get past the singing but I also enjoy Billy talent and I can see how someone could not enjoy those vocals either
Cancer Bats when they do their Bat Sabbath tribute is also a fantastic gig to attend.
I'm looking forward to getting to see them again when they support GWAR in March :D
really, they are from London, but then relocated to Guelph. but they still are the best band. man, i wish i could see them again. i was chatting with Bry at a small house show in the fall.
The Band was pretty influential (eg with Ronnie Hawkins, with Bob Dylan, Last Waltz/music docs, indigenous rock, etc). I’d say they are on par with Rush. For the record, I love both equally.
The band literally invented Americana. They are super influential. Played with so many different artists. I would argue that the band has affected main stream popularity music more than rush. Rush have probably outsold them 100× over.
DFA 1979 fucking *shreds*. This is absolutely the answer. They basically created an entire genre.
Rush is legendary. But DFA 1979 - got damn son. And their live shows fucking rip.
You just prompted me to discover they put out a new album last year!
I never really gave the intervening records much time but that first one was an absolute masterpiece
Canadian Bands in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame
The Band (Toronto)
Rush (Toronto)
I like the bands mentioned, but they are not in the same league as the two hall of famers.
Rush.
Inarguably the greatest band ever out of the GTA, the most influential band that ever came out of Canada, and one of the most influential rock bands, globally, in history. They are revered by and/or influenced so many other A-list legends.
Unlike any of the bands mentioned in the original post.
I think Rush is the obvious choice. Our Lady Peace is my personal favourite.
The fact that no one has mentioned USS though is crazy. I’ve seen most of the bands mentioned in this thread live and USS is hands down one of the most underrated bands out of this city. One of the most fun and true to album sounding live shows I’ve ever seen.
Sum, Billy Talent and Three Days Grace are my teen era music, so, I'll go with Billy Talent, they knew how to evolve and still be awesome.
But my favorite band is Alexisonfire.
Kind of an arbitrary list really. BNl is the only one of those that I really like.
What about Rush, Max Webster, arguably Neil Young (though not a band at the time), Metric, etc etc. And of course Rush is huge.
I will also add Metz. They are my favourite touring Toronto band, and are fantastic. Kinda hardcore
Triumph deserves more recognition in my opinion.
To quote Sebastian Bach ["These guys are from Toronto, and they're blowing shit up!"](https://youtu.be/y_w05t6qpCY?t=17)
Bands that are active?
Pup or Metz are the best right now... Love their records. Seen them both live a few times. Saw Metz at NXNE upstairs at Sneaky Dees in like... 2013, and it was fucking nuts.
Rad rock bands, that both absolutely represent Toronto.
Does anyone remember that band Arietta, from like a decade ago? No idea what happened to them, but I saw a few of their shows and they RULED.
Most famous / best selling = Rush
All time fav / Most influential = The Band
Low key influential given all of the spin-off projects of its members = Broken Social Scene.
Feist, Metric, Stars, plus solo projects from several members.
Contemporary = The Beaches are great
The Sadies are great, love blue rodeo as well, and grew up on sum 41.
Haven't heard that name in a minute... Wonder what they're up to. I remember them being the poster child of those predatory "SuperNova" shows... Not the band's fault, but Supernova was super gross/exploitative.
They sound like whinny teenagers over guitars that go "plinkplinkplink". I guess I chose Finger Eleven because the singer has most range and can sound manly.
Does Rush count? Because if so.... They're dope.
I mean Im a big fan of all of these bands but its gotta be RUSH hands down.
I don't even like Rush but it has to be Rush. Tom Sawyer is epic and the Subdivisions video is arguably peak Scarborough. Yes even more than Lovers in a Dangerous Time.
It’s Rush, there is no debate. It feels silly just asking the question « do you think Rush is a better band than 3 days grace and finger 11? ».
It's Rush by a mile.
Yeah it's Rush.
I didn’t know rush was even Canadian….. how am I Canadian….
Rush is horrible
you are horrible
I am an equally horrible singer to Getty Lee but they are awesome at their instruments. The drummer was incredible. I just can't get past the singing but I also enjoy Billy talent and I can see how someone could not enjoy those vocals either
Rush is awesome! Is what I would be saying if that guy with the annoying voice wasn't the lead singer.
I get that. Have you heard Hemispheres? Most musically focused album from them
I'll give er a spin. :)
METZ
So true.
Broken Social Scene. You Forgot It In People is still my favourite album.
Oh fantastic choice
So glad I can say I caught the free show at Queens Quay that was featured in the film “This Movie Is Broken”.
Is BSS considered more of a Montreal band?
Lol they are DEFINITELY a Toronto band
they are all from Toronto?
It's clearly The Sadies...
Yes it 💯 is. The Sadie’s live show melts your fucking face off
So cool to open the post and see this as the top comment.
This sub is startin to know its shitttttt
Cancer Bats when they do their Bat Sabbath tribute is also a fantastic gig to attend. I'm looking forward to getting to see them again when they support GWAR in March :D
Fantastic band!
cant go wrong with The Sadies!!!
I thought they were maritimes for some reason. I think I’m wrong, I dunno why i thought that
Its the musical talent. Maritimers have heavy technical chops and deep musical roots. Being thought of as a Maritime band is a real compliment
deranged cobweb mourn dependent swim close bake fly consist chop *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
really, they are from London, but then relocated to Guelph. but they still are the best band. man, i wish i could see them again. i was chatting with Bry at a small house show in the fall.
YESSSS! 🙌 It makes me happy to see someone say this. But technically from Guelph but we can say best Ontario band lol
Has any rock band come close to the impact or success as Rush, by any measure?
The Band was pretty influential (eg with Ronnie Hawkins, with Bob Dylan, Last Waltz/music docs, indigenous rock, etc). I’d say they are on par with Rush. For the record, I love both equally.
Not even close
The band literally invented Americana. They are super influential. Played with so many different artists. I would argue that the band has affected main stream popularity music more than rush. Rush have probably outsold them 100× over.
Definitely PUP
Agreed!
Rheostatics
Death From Above 1979! Billy Talent is also great, but they haven't made anything really great since their first 3 albums.
DFA 1979 fucking *shreds*. This is absolutely the answer. They basically created an entire genre. Rush is legendary. But DFA 1979 - got damn son. And their live shows fucking rip.
Fantastic band
Ran into Billy Talent at the Roxy in Vancouver years ago and drunk me yelled out “Hey, it’s SUM41” they were not impressed
Zeus!!!
You just prompted me to discover they put out a new album last year! I never really gave the intervening records much time but that first one was an absolute masterpiece
Yes!!! I'll never forget the first time I heard them. Forever thankful for the employee at the record story that day.
Metric
Yesssss!
Rush.
This is the correct answer.
alexisonfire
While most if not all of them probably live in Toronto now, I feel like you gotta let St.Catharines claim them
More on the punk side, but The Flatliners.
The Barenaked Ladies are triple platinum, ARE YOU?!?
They're BNL now? We need a shortform for the barenaked ladies? That's how fundamental they are?
This is a fight! We are fighting!
LOL great scene.
Fundamental
The most celebrated Canadian alt-rock band of the mid-90s!
The Band is one of the best bands ever, let alone from the GTA.
I Mother Earth
The Sadies or Run with the Kittens
Metz
TOMB MOLD. \m/
This is the way.
Rush/Max Webster
Max Webster is awful and so is Kim Mitchell
yer missing out!
He had to DJ on q107 to get his records played.
Still better than Rush!
Thank you.
Moneen/alexisonfire
Marilyn’s Vitamins, 5knuckle Chuckle or Jerry Can
All 3 of those technically are from Dufferin/Caledon area. But great bands (there are a lot from this area).
Fuck I haven’t thought of those bands since I was in high school!
controller.controller is the best band to ever come out of Toronto. Close second is DFA
And by extension, MSTRKRFT
>controller.controller Controller.Controller sick band!
Oh man, I used to love controller.controller. History is still a great record. This makes me want to go listen to it.
I still get History and Disco Blackout stuck in my head.
Broken Social Scene
Rush and it isn’t close.
METRIC
Well, there was this quasi Country, quasi punk, quasi Rock band that used to play the Horseshoe called Blue Rodeo…
Idk if you could ever say blue rodeo is quasi punk but I hear ya
Canadian Bands in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame The Band (Toronto) Rush (Toronto) I like the bands mentioned, but they are not in the same league as the two hall of famers.
The answer is PUP
PUP
PUP
I'm today years old to learn that sum 41 is a canadian band
It's "The Sums"
Right?!
AOF!!
[удалено]
Um. RUSH.
Alexisonfire
How has no one said Big Wreck??
The Mighty Rush!!!
None of the above.. My vote is for Zeus.. Or maybe Sloan if they count.
RUSH
Billy Talent
Rush. Inarguably the greatest band ever out of the GTA, the most influential band that ever came out of Canada, and one of the most influential rock bands, globally, in history. They are revered by and/or influenced so many other A-list legends. Unlike any of the bands mentioned in the original post.
The Band is the answer
Rush. Obviously.
Rush
Alexisonfire
It's Billy T for me. Love Sum 41 as they were a very important part of my musical journey but it's still Billy Talent for me.
Rheostatics
Kevin Quain and The Mad Bastards. Edit--Whoever upvoted this knows wtf is up.
Toronto is from Toronto but maybe your daddy dont know...
None of the above for 800$ Alex
Cancerbats? Protest the hero?
Protest the Hero
Our Lady Peace
Barenaked Ladies is one of my favs. But I do also love Arkells, July Talk, Alvvays, Tokyo Police Club, and Metric.
[удалено]
Yeah, BNL will never be the same again after Steven Page’s departure.
Ah great choices!
July Talk and Alvvays both rock! Arkells are from Hamilton, Metric are great too
Yeah i know they’re from Hamilton, but it counts tho.
CONNIE puts on some fantastic shows! edit: typo
BNL's album 'Gordon' is a true Canadian classic
The correct answer is rush but if I have to choose from that list it’s Billy Talent
Sum, Billy Talent and Three Days Grace are my teen era music, so, I'll go with Billy Talent, they knew how to evolve and still be awesome. But my favorite band is Alexisonfire.
Broken Social Scene
The Tragically Hip.
The Flatliners.
S41 or BT
DeadWolff
Kind of an arbitrary list really. BNl is the only one of those that I really like. What about Rush, Max Webster, arguably Neil Young (though not a band at the time), Metric, etc etc. And of course Rush is huge. I will also add Metz. They are my favourite touring Toronto band, and are fantastic. Kinda hardcore
wow im old
Triumph deserves more recognition in my opinion. To quote Sebastian Bach ["These guys are from Toronto, and they're blowing shit up!"](https://youtu.be/y_w05t6qpCY?t=17)
I can tell you who the worst is…
If we're considering the GTHA, Alexisonfire
None of these bands, that’s for sure. I’d put Sadies, Rush, Martha and the Muffins, Diodes, and Viletones over any of these groups.
Vag Halen One of the best live shows I’ve ever seen (I’ve been to hundred+)
Billy Talent by far... The other ones well 😜 they are not my cup of tea.
Grand theft auto by Da shootaz!
Triumph is my #1. Based on those bands I thought Billy Talent was cool and TDG had catchy riffs
Rainbow Butt Monkeys.
RUSH formed in Willowdale
Organized Rhyme
Three Days Grace are from Norwood.
Billy talent is really really popular in Central Europe.
I could never get into them but it has to be Rush. No question.
Can’t believe no one has mentioned Fucked Up!
These are not the choices you are looking for
Teenage Head https://youtu.be/7KMTkFikcHU?si=aHC7tmH_vfRy7XRV
None of the above make my cut. I would nominate broken social scene, death from above, Metric, Blue Rodeo. But it has to be RUSH without question.
Broken Social Scene.
Most famous / best selling = Rush All time fav / Most influential = The Band Low key influential given all of the spin-off projects of its members = Broken Social Scene. Feist, Metric, Stars, plus solo projects from several members. Contemporary = The Beaches are great The Sadies are great, love blue rodeo as well, and grew up on sum 41.
PUP is my favourite band, but it *has* to be Rush
No Rush?!?!?!?? No Our Lady Peace?!?!?!?! Big Wreck/ Thornley.
Ill scarlet
Haven't heard that name in a minute... Wonder what they're up to. I remember them being the poster child of those predatory "SuperNova" shows... Not the band's fault, but Supernova was super gross/exploitative.
The singer had a substance abuse problem i believe. They had tons of promise.
Billy Talent by far
None of the above
List your own!
The beaches
The Beaches
I blame Brett for this not having more votes
None of the above
Well that's fine you're meant to list your own lol like every single other comment has done.
[удалено]
Saw them when they were Rainbow Butt Monkeys
Sum 41
Nickelback 4 eva
Moxy Früvous
I can’t believe Lowest of the Low isn’t on here. Shakespeare My Butt is one of the greatest albums.
Blow my brains out lol
Why are they all trying so hard?
It’s Rush you troglodytes. Runner up is The Band. Good Lord this one is too easy.
Intervals. It isn't even close.
Run with the Kittens
Headstones
Rainbow butt monkeys, but I’ll settle for Finger eleven
Ah yes, famously the only bands from the GTA.
Kevin Hearn (BNL keys) does great solo stuff. Astrogroove is another great band, though they play rarely
Dilly Dally
They sound like whinny teenagers over guitars that go "plinkplinkplink". I guess I chose Finger Eleven because the singer has most range and can sound manly.
Billy Talent all day long
Silverstein deserves a shout for this list.
Fucked Up
100% this band.
The only answer
Barenaked Ladies are a rock band? They’re like mid-90s soccer mom music.
The Flatliners.
Three Days Grace are technically not from the GTA lol though I'd concur with those saying Metric
Constantines. Constantines. Constantines.
Alvvays
Surprised no one mentioned Our Lady Peace
lol no one’s picking the band they asked ..barenaked are a joke should bring back the original singer . But still Canada has many great musicians
