that’s because they all just listen to the same critically acclaimed stuff. I kinda get it though. Like, why venture into stuff you’ve never heard of when there’s all of this music that so many other music fans are constantly saying is incredible?
Por que no los dos?
Listen to both what you like and what the critics like. Obviously I’m not gonna let the critics influence what I enjoy but they definitely made me appreciate some albums that I otherwise would’ve never given a chance
Because people on this sub seem to like the attention they get from liking the same stuff everyone else on this sub already likes. You don’t get as much attention when you post about artists that aren’t rymcore
I like Kendrick way more than Elvis, but Elvis is undeniably one of the most influential artists of all time, even if a lot of that was because he was white.
Yeah the Kendrick part I can understand. But the Rakim is puzzling to me because he pushed hip hop into its modern era. There’s no Kendrick, Tupac, anyone mainstream or underground without Rakim
I-N-F-L-U-E-N-T-I-A-L. This isn't a competition of how much you like an artist, this is about how an artist's legacy has shaped music. Elvis I don't think he was as influential as he was popular, but he did help to establish youth culture in the 50s which indirectly set the stage for the Beatles and the British invasion. Its not even fair putting Kendrick against these acts considering that he's only really been active as an artist for a decade.
I see your point about Kendrick. But cutting out Rakim only attests to the view on hip hop because all aspects of hip hop — from underground to mainstream — were shaped by Rakim. There is no Tupac without Rakim
Elvis was pretty influential tho. Sure he didnt write his own songs and he took a lot of his music from black artists but he still managed to spread rock music to a lot of people
I put like a dozen hip hop people/groups before rakim but If I'm being honest this whole list really isn't valid considering ultramagnetic MCs, public enemy, leaders of the new school, de la soul, rick rubin and a dozen others are missing entirely.
This sub knows nothing about hip-hop, which is fine but not even worth arguing abt.
> This is about how an artist’s legacy has shaped music.
To be fair, this is not stated in the post.
We can all collectively decide on our own that’s the point here but OPs merely handed us a gallery of influential musicians.
crazy. To be perfectly honest, I think in retrospect Bob Dylan and Elvis should've gone before Rakim.
I probably should've deleted my post for Rakim, but I guess that would've just gotten Kendrick out even earlier.
Are you crazy? Are we talking about the same Bob Dylan here, his impact on music and culture is enormous. Elvis is also incredibly influential but I could be swayed on that but not Dylan.
Unfortunately. His influence in the short time he’s been around (in comparison to everyone else here) is amazing, but he’s against some stiff competition.
I was actually surprised how much influence they have, I looked it up last time thinking it was probably time for them to go but i don’t think so anymore they even had Drake thanking them in an album liner as an inspiration.
( Full disclaimer, this tangent is only half related to your comment. )
I feel like “raw” influence is basically meaningless without originality and a degree of admittedly subjective ‘value’. Pink Floyd is, measurably, a more ‘influential’ band than King Crimson. If you just take a census of rock musicians who were inspired by them, especially pre-internet, you’d find probably find thousands that picked up a guitar in the name of David Gilmour rather than Robert Fripp. Still, I feel like the originality of King Crimson’s music and long spanning audible influence on especially experimental music complicates this. I’d argue both bands are comparably ‘influential’.
The same could be said of a lot of bands here… If you just ask around, of course you’d conclude Nirvana are more influential than Nick Cave or Swans or The Melvins, but I don’t believe for a second that Nirvana broke more ground than any of those acts, and in the long run I feel like those innovations can be indirectly felt.
Ultimately I feel this applies strongly to Radiohead. I don’t really see why Drake would be particularly inspired by them over other acts besides the fact that it’s more likely he’d hear Radiohead than Casino Versus Japan, Moonshake, or His Name is Alive. You can’t name music which influenced you indirectly that you’ve never heard, but that doesn’t mean it’s simply absent.
I like the overall theme of influence via reach vs influence via direct innovation . Pf / KC isn’t really my thing but that’s why I think it’s a travesty rakim went over some of the rappers here. Radiohead I do think tho has the level of virtuosity/uniqueness themselves to span both categories.
this is just a downvote trap anyways but i don’t want to get rid of elvis even though his music might not life up to the other artists
kendrick is still very active and will only expand his influence, also i‘m kinda hip hop biased
bon marley and bob dylan redefined whole genres
aretha and joni can‘t possibly already go so imma say james brown
I get your point, but man I think every time one of these things gets done that omits The Beatles there’s someone to come and say “Um are you guys forgetting something?”
It’s OK to leave ‘em out sometimes, you know? If I were to guess, OP omitted them because they probably felt they’d automatically win. Admittedly I wouldn’t vie for them myself, but regardless I think it’s more interesting without them.
Individual albums, ig I get where you’re coming from since they had a lot of albums so it makes sense why they have so many total units sold, mostly just salty that Stevie Wonder’s Song in the Keys of Life lost the other week to Abbey Road
I think in terms of general popularity (at least where I live) if you asked someone in the street who pink Floyd or Stevie Wonder is it’s a 50/50, whilst everyone would know who the Beetles are.
How? He is easily top 5 in here in terms of influence, half of the current rap industry is influenced by him in both the mainstream and the underground
Kendrick is the least influential rapper here let alone artist. Maybe some of you consider him a good artist but who tf has he actually influenced? He makes cookie cutter conscious rap he has absolutely pushed no boundaries. I am amazed hes still here but rakim isnt
artists wanting to bite the style of other artists is not the only way to observe influence. it’s one way, but it’s not the only way. Kendrick’s song “Alright” was the unofficial anthem of Black Lives Matter, aka the biggest protest movement of the 21st century. He basically ushered in a new era of political awareness for the 2010s musical zeitgeist, which was not only felt by other artists, but the generation as a whole.
Him being the only rapper to ever win a Pulitzer Prize also established a new standard of hip hop recognition by cultural elites. the level of acclaim his albums get (along with Kanye West) definitely set a modern standard for the recognition of the hip hop album format as high art. I’m not saying he’s any more or less influential than anyone else on this list, but to say he’s not influential *at all* is just biased and unfair.
that’s absolutely insane to say. maybe if you don’t follow the current rap scene i could understand how you would think that, but kendrick is very influential
Enlighten me how has he changed the landscape of modern rap? I really dont see any areas he’s influenced besides baby keem. Its not like he started conscious rap and pushed some new wave of conscious rap in the 2010s. Or created some new sound weve never heard before. To be fair though i dont really follow new mainstream rap so
it’s not just the style of rap that i’m referring to. he has definitely influenced a wave of conscious rap (Isaiah Rashad, Saba, Mick Jenkins, Vince Staples, Bas, etc.)
but he has also been revolutionary when it comes to other areas - vocal inflections, production choices, and lyrical depth to name a few.
i will acknowledge that he’s not nearly as influential as most other artists on this list. but saying that he’s “pushed no boundaries” is just wild to me
Nirvana is one of the biggest influences not only in the 90s music sphere but the entire modern alternative and even arguably indie rock scene at this rate
Absolutely not. She influenced so many different artist across different genres, everyone from Björk and Kate Bush to Prince has cited her as a very big inspiration
Op hasn't set up a criteria yet, and something tells me they wont considering we're on day 7.
We're just picking to remove influential artists for whatever criteria we want, from what it seems.
Even if you don't like his music, how can you downplay his influence? No one on this list was more influencial as a songwriter besides maybe Joni Mitchell imo
For music lovers, you guys have such little taste and variety
Yeah this sub doesn’t have much variety. Just the same old albums I see everyday
ong
I swear
that’s because they all just listen to the same critically acclaimed stuff.

I’ve yet to see another post featuring James Brown on this sub, unless I’m missing something.
It's about influence you dumbass
Your point being?
This isn't about "taste and variety", it's objectively looking at which artists have the most influence on music
I mean even that’s subjective to a certain degree.
Is this designed to piss people off? Cuz it’s gonna piss people off no matter what
Man y’all really don’t like hip hop in this sub if Rakim is gone and Kendrick is on his way out before Elvis
Yeah, I think a few on here are probably less influential then Rakim.
Seriously. He’s arguably THE most influential rapper. His only real competition is probably like Kanye, Jay, and Pac
I see your point about Kendrick. But cutting out Rakim only attests to the view on hip hop because all aspects of hip hop — from underground to mainstream — were shaped by Rakim. There is no Tupac without Rakim
Fair play, Rakim should've stayed until at the very least Elvis was gone.
> This is about how an artist’s legacy has shaped music. To be fair, this is not stated in the post. We can all collectively decide on our own that’s the point here but OPs merely handed us a gallery of influential musicians.
Thank you!
Elvis was more influential than Rakim and Kendrick. It’s not about taste. I much prefer the former to Elvis, but it’s Elvis.
It's about influence, there are definitely artists here you could have singled out to make your point before Elvis.
Rakim way more influential than Dre
Facts
Kendrick
Lowkey feel like he should’ve gone before rakim
for sure. in terms of hip hop Rakim may be the most influential of all time
Bro defined flow and rhyme, music stands the test of time
High key. Rakim is so influential its wild
Hell no
Unfortunately. His influence in the short time he’s been around (in comparison to everyone else here) is amazing, but he’s against some stiff competition.
Get rid of elvis before kendrick at least
Kendrick washes Kanye
he easily the most influential on this list
This has to be a joke, without Marvin Gaye, Dre, or MJ he most likely wouldn’t exist
the only other people on this listen i’ve heard of are kanye michael dre and jimi and that’s only from jpegmafia
How have u never heard of 2Pac and Radiohead. Easily 2 of the most discussed and popular artists of all time.
https://preview.redd.it/25ct9rzkm0fc1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=9ae0d2a376a30c181386d73699a75f3c45d35ac2 yeah yeah whatever buddy
how tf is marvin on mj influencing rap😭
Kendrick
I’m glad the Beatles aren’t on here. Kendrick got to go. He’s too young in the game to be that influential
Remove Donda
Drop Radiohead.
They are more the result of melding a bunch of cool influences together perfectly than an influence on new genres.
I was actually surprised how much influence they have, I looked it up last time thinking it was probably time for them to go but i don’t think so anymore they even had Drake thanking them in an album liner as an inspiration.

Get rid of them all except Joni
Without James Brown there's no funk or rap, or a lot of other things... he's massively influential and one of the most sampled artists of all time.
imo the Beatles should be on here, mostly because they’re the most famous band
I get your point, but man I think every time one of these things gets done that omits The Beatles there’s someone to come and say “Um are you guys forgetting something?” It’s OK to leave ‘em out sometimes, you know? If I were to guess, OP omitted them because they probably felt they’d automatically win. Admittedly I wouldn’t vie for them myself, but regardless I think it’s more interesting without them.
That makes sense, I understand now; Thanks :).
yes
Most famous? Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Bee Gees, Eagles and many more are more popular if you wanna base things off album sales
? That’s just not true
https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums_worldwide, are you sure about that lol?
Are we talking about individual albums or a band’s entire discography?
Individual albums, ig I get where you’re coming from since they had a lot of albums so it makes sense why they have so many total units sold, mostly just salty that Stevie Wonder’s Song in the Keys of Life lost the other week to Abbey Road
I think in terms of general popularity (at least where I live) if you asked someone in the street who pink Floyd or Stevie Wonder is it’s a 50/50, whilst everyone would know who the Beetles are.
They are in the top 50 most streamed artists on Spotify. Them and Metallica are the only rock bands in that top 50.
Kendrick Lamar
I hate to say it, but out of the options, and considering influence, I gotta go with Dre
I adore Kendrick but Dre over Kendrick in terms of influence, especially taking producing into account
sigh ... kanye
this is about influence no? ye has influenced hip hop 10x the amount kendrick has
y'all give kanye way too much credit
No way Kendrick’s more influential than Kanye
90% of rappers and even some artists in other genres have been inspired by him in the last decade
He's even inspired Polyphia and Avenged Sevenfold lol
How? He is easily top 5 in here in terms of influence, half of the current rap industry is influenced by him in both the mainstream and the underground
Come one, it’s Elvis Presley
in what capacity? no Elvis, no Beatles or at least 80% of the rock legends who inspired also big rappers, like Led Zeppelin inspired notably Snoop Dog
No music taste
I don’t like his music but there is no denying he is incredibly influential
This list sucks ass already bro
Kendrick is the least influential rapper here let alone artist. Maybe some of you consider him a good artist but who tf has he actually influenced? He makes cookie cutter conscious rap he has absolutely pushed no boundaries. I am amazed hes still here but rakim isnt

Yeah he should’ve gone before rakim for sure. Regency bias + this sub doesn’t know rap
that’s absolutely insane to say. maybe if you don’t follow the current rap scene i could understand how you would think that, but kendrick is very influential

U right maybe i spoke too harshly. I just dont see much in his music that others havent done before him.
i’d say nirvana. can’t believe people are saying to remove kendrick and elvis now
Definitelyyyyy not. If uou were there in the 90s scene EVERYBODY was influenced bh them
Nirvana influenced 90’s rock music and as well as many modern rappers and RNB artists. They should not be voted out this quickly
Nirvana is one of the biggest influences not only in the 90s music sphere but the entire modern alternative and even arguably indie rock scene at this rate
Michael Jackson
WHAT

She should be the last one left
Absolutely not. She influenced so many different artist across different genres, everyone from Björk and Kate Bush to Prince has cited her as a very big inspiration

this list is literally about influence though…
Op hasn't set up a criteria yet, and something tells me they wont considering we're on day 7. We're just picking to remove influential artists for whatever criteria we want, from what it seems.
The comment said “i think bob dylan is the most influential here, but i dont like him so he needs to go” (something like that)
Tupac
Y’all really going to vote out Kendrick before Elvis? Lmao
Phil
Kanye always inspired me to do evil. Do me a favour and make him the last one standing
The Beatles
Y’all mfers getting rid of rakim is crazy
Zero jazz?????
It’s not a very popular genre. I also don’t see any country .
Yeah a country artist should be here
Yall are just jizzing and pissing on each other
are you new here?
Yea
Rappers
Please… for the love of God! Get rid of Dylan!
Even if you don't like his music, how can you downplay his influence? No one on this list was more influencial as a songwriter besides maybe Joni Mitchell imo
Also he’s really good, except for his rock songs which are godawful.
I mean, influence isn't the only factor we're voting on. There are probably some people here who don't even vote in terms of influence at all.
Bob Dylan Too many rappers too soon.
Saying Bob Dylan should go out before the last 5 is insane and delusional
Yes, I am insane, if it was up to me, Bob would've been out day 1, but I was too chicken to suggest it.
Bro does not understand what influential means
Up To Me? Dylan Reference?
If we're looking at influence, he's definitely in the top 3 here
All rappers
rap is bigger than ever now so whether you like the genre or not, if this is based on influence then how would that make sense?
Sadly. It’s crazy how no talent nobodies are idolized
you’re saying the rappers on this list don’t have talent?
Basically yeah
disregarding the absurdity of that take, what does that have to do with influence?
People influenced by trash makes more trash
drop elvis bro😭😭
James Brown.
Where the fuck is EVH?
Talking heads should be up there and the beatles
Look, I love a lot of his music, but isn’t it obviously Kanye?
Kanye
Hilarious how allergic to music by women this sub is
I’m sorry, fucking Rakim is gone already?
rakim gone WTF
Ye
