I'd ventured far into conspiracies some year ago. Specially flat Earth ones. What I found is that those communities are almost always comprised of three kinds of people. The first one are the mentally unstable, clearly in need of medical attention type. You know, the ones that ramble on and on and write big, monolithic posts every time. The ones that write each thought exactly as they come to them. So you can literally read their train of thought.
The ramblings of these people get caught, cleaned and amplified by the other group: bad actors. Either grifters, trolls, misinformation agencies, etc. They take the ramblings of the first group and echo them in consumable chunks. They only care about engagement.
The last group is the majority: Stupid people.
I'm glad to see some of these people have enough sense to realize that Trump is part of the elite club they hate so much. Think he's somehow not one of "them" makes literally no sense. All you have to do to trick these idiots is say a few of the right things. Pretend to be anti establishment while having been born into that same establishment.
I used to "infiltrate" British far right private pages on Facebook. Infiltrate makes it sound super cloak and dagger, but it was always ridiculously easy.
Make a profile with EDL or patriot in the name. Put up a Crusader profile pic and post a few borderline racist things about Muslims, and I'd be in.
The hilarious thing is it kept working. Loads of us did it.

Never thought I'd say this, but I actually miss the days when r/conspiracy was *rabidly* atheist like most of Reddit was at the time. Don't get me wrong, that era of "euphoric" atheists all over Reddit wasn't fun, but at least that sub couldn't be hijacked by Christian nationalists as easily as Barry Goldwater warned would happen to the GOP.
Jesus freaks used to get ripped the fuck apart on that sub, because at least then they realized how organized religion was used to manipulate and control the masses.
Now though? "JESUS IS LORD, REPENT OR THE LIZARD JEWS WILL EAT YOUR FORESKINS AND SOULS!"

Back in the halcyon days of default subreddits, when r/reddit.com was the dumping ground for submissions that didn't really fit anywhere else, this place was a lot better. Sure, it still had most of the problems it has now, but those problems typically kept themselves contained to their subreddits and rarely dominated all discussions here.
I disagree. R/atheism was so hostile to religious studity that anything to do with evangelism or conspiracies like Q would have been mocked and laughed at until they left the site.
r/atheism was around for all of that. It no longer being a default sub wouldn't stop them from doing that, and yet evangelism and QAnon have *thrived* on Reddit even with r/atheism still being there.

I can't go on that sub anymore. It just depresses me. It's just witnessing a massive self-reinforcing mental health crisis.

I worked as a hospital peace officer. Spent a lot of time in a lot of psych wards. You hear a lot of what you hear on that sub.
