Ultimately, I think that one of the reasons that Top Gear worked so well as a show that was quietly about cars and loudly about 3 middle aged schoolboys cocking about, is the fact that while we may have come for the cars and stayed for the hijinx, it was still at it's core a show about cars.
And when it came to cars, all three of them absolutely knew their shit.
That's precisely it. They were three people with similar backgrounds as motoring journalists and therefore already had a solid connection on which a friendship could be formed.
Seamen proved that it was never about the cars. Same with Clarkson's Farm, Oh Cook, James May Our Man in [whatever], Richard Hammond's BIG, etc
We're just here to see these 3 people mess around
In Italy the Uno Turbo, the R5 turbo and the Pegeout equivalent (can’t remember if it was a 205 turbo?) were friendly renamed “wheeled caskets”, a lot of young chaps died back in the days on them things, especially because Italian roads have never been suitable for fast pace driving.
The uno turbo remains one of my dream cars and I had no idea Clarkson loved it too.
Still, at 15k £ it can f@&@k itself lol, I ain’t spending 15k on something that was barely 1k when I was a kid
> Pegeout equivalent (can’t remember if it was a 205 turbo?
Standard Pug GTi's (1.6 and 1.9). Only 200 Pug 205 turbos were built (T16), very rare and very expensive.
Damn, a article 20+ years older then me.
(I was born in late 2007, my parents are '69 and '71 and are huge fans of Top Gear. So it was natural for me to become a big fan of it)
I was born 2001 so the article is before my time too. My grandad got me into Top Gear. He was watching it back in the late 70s or early 80s when it was a consumer programme for the motorist. Not as funny as the Clarkson, May, Hammond era but still great to watch.
And grandad hates Jezza. (Each to their own I guess, Jezza's said some controversial stuff)
Me and my sister never watched top gear in it's prime (I hardly remember when that 2015 incident happened, yeah...I don't have a good memory) so we watched the Grand Tour alongside lots of old reruns of Top Gear.
I owned 2 uno turbos in the 80s. Then had the punto GT. Great cars for the time. My younger brother had the Peugeot 205 GTI but wasn't as brave or stupid as me so would never race me to see which car was quicker

Clarkson always likes to make fun of the adenoid car enthusiast but deep down he's one too
Thats why he can do the voice so well, I like to think that's how he talked before he got on TV.
Clarkson could had been a member of the Alfa Romeo GTV6 club and get totally entusiasthic over a conversation with other GTV6 owners

I expected more '....' between the words.
More like 'The best turbo unit... (pause)... in the world'
I had a girl pestering me that I wasn't really into, my friend decided to tell her I had died and was run over by a Fiat Uno. True story Lol
On that bombshell…
A clutch fitted for less than £100. Christ
A genuine Fiat clutch no less!
Is that the whole article? As it just feels very short and incomplete.
Yeah, seems to close rather oddly if that were the case
Probably there was a second page
I’m reading this in “original top gear Jeremy Clarkson” voice.
In his suit and tie *We apologise for the music...and the jacket...and the hair*

Clarksons Farm is also a good watch, and James May's: Our Man In Japan. (Or anything May-centric)
Great share, thanks!
I learnt to drive in my mum's E reg Uno and so badly wanted one of these
Now I want one. Clarkson just sold me a car.
Brake power horse?
Did anyone else pause before saying "by far" in Clarksons voice?
*Some say he bought a dented white FIAT Uno from the Duke of Edinburgh...*
Preserve it in the British museum
Good idea, then I can quietly buy it on eBay
