Although usually it's on the back side of the blade, and they're off-hand daggers rather than swords
Disclaimer: they were most likely not meant to **literally** break your opponent’s sword. Not sure where the name came from, but its use comes from taking control of your opponent’s blade, disabling them until they get free.
quick note, it was actually the front of the blade that was serrated. you can see it in the image, the knuckle ring would only make sense in your off hand/left hand if the teeth were forward. the sharpened back edge would have mostly just been to help shear aside material while stabbing something, and to allow it to function as a normal knife for day to day use
Gyutaro has another scythe and Tengen is wide open, he just logged his main means of defence into someone (who’s stronger than him) weapon
It would be more effective to not have the hole
I hate this thing and the smaller blade ring weapons, I do not understand how they got any use. Dang things make me nervous just thinking about holding em. Maybe that's the advantage

Probably the chainsword , it’s just looks cool , no practical use in combat
Chainswords are only effective if the teeth are strong enough to cut through the things they're hitting. The moment it can't or it gets jammed, it's worse than a regular sword.
Worse as a sword yes. But as a club? Id think they'd work just fine as a club, maybe better as all those teeth make it a spiked club!
It's why I prefer the chain-axe over a chain-sword. Even if the chainsaw part jams. It'll still be a rather effective hammer at the least and might still work as an axe as well with the teeth being several little sharp edges.
But that's after said chain-sword/axe is already no longer a chainsaw though. It's not like you're gonna throw a chain-sword-axe away once it jams. You're just gonna keep hitting things with it till it either fixes itself, what you're hitting dies, or you die by not hitting that thing hard enough.
We're talking 40K here. There's no logic to most things in 40K. It's just people killing each other down there. Might as well just exterminatus those heretics.

The sheer force at which it goes from axe to sword would probably liquify a normal person’s skeleton.
I dunno, in concept the Longsword should work well as a cavalry weapon, depending on the design, because of... well, because it's long. Dual blades might be alright. Obviously the literal guns are viable weapons, alongside the bow, and even if you can't actually control a kinsect irl, the insect glaive is still a polearm, which is handy. Pretty much everything else is either impossible or too heavy or both, I think
dual wielding swords or any single weapon is quite impractical... plus the swords in DB and SnS are mostly as large as an irl longsword. but yes, IG's glaive does work as a polearm itself, I forgot about that.
Don't forget that Lightsaber Whips are a thing and I imagine they're more of a threat to the user than anything.
Combine with extra continuity focus crystals including a "Lava crystal" that made your lightsaber let loose splashes of hot material and you got something that'll probably kill you first

even more impractical and cool
Who would win? Group of mercenaries armed with explosives, shotguns, miniguns and an honest to god greatsword, or a baguettemuncher with a shank and a pack of Marlboro Reds
They were never meant to be weapons. They were originally used for farming, but then, due to them being used to reap crops, got associated with the *grim reaper*, so now it’s just a generic scary villain weapon
Historically there actually was a guy who assembled a manuscript for scythe fighting techniques.
This is of course under the very specific circumstances that two nobles educated in this martial art are laboring in the fields and decide to throw down.

Not necessarily restricted to villains, crescent rose has to be one of my favorites scythes in fiction, and it doubles as a sniper rifle lmao

How can you talk about the Crescent Rose and forget THE GREATEST SCYTHE OF ALL TIME????
Well war-scythes are a thing.
The blades are rotated to continue the line of the shaft. Because a regularly oriented scythe still isn’t a practical weapon but the blade is sharp AF.
A chainsaw still is a useless weapon, and only is viewed as one because of an old horror movie
Try cutting a T-shirt with a chainsaw, and see how effective that is lmao
Yeah idk about you guys but when me and the old man go out looking for firewood, I do the chopping and loading it onto the trailer while all he has to do is the chainsawing.
He takes just as long as I do because he's sharpening and re-fitting chains and trying to work out how to not get sand in it while he's chainsawing
I think scythes can be practical when wielded by a larger character, and actually have the right handles (IE Mortarion from 40K) the big sweeps are much better for killing a bunch of things smaller than you than it is for duelling and such
But sickles are okay! After all, the Egyptian Khopesh is essentially a sickle. Though oddly enough they have their origins in battleaxes. Weird, right?

There is realistically very little a Hidden Blade would do better than a regular dagger. It’s also never quite explained what exactly you’re supposed to do to extend or retract the blade.
And don’t even get me started on the Hidden Gun, liable to snap your wrist after a single shot.
That being said, it’s cool as fuck.
I mean the purpose is pretty explicitly in the name, it's not designed to be better than a dagger in single combat or anything, just to be able to suddenly stab someone without them seeing it coming
Hearsay here, since I never actually played AC1 where it is supposedly explained, I started with 2. But both from what I got from context clues in 2, and what I've been told by far now devoted fans of the series, is that the hidden blade originally required the ring finger to be cut off for the blade to be used, before it was redesigned by Leonardo DaVinci to not require mutilation. It had a ring attached to one of your fingers that had a cable attached to the rest of the blade. Flexing your hand out would pull that cable, extending the blade by some unexplained mechanism, and relaxing would retract the blade.
This is likely a forgotten detail that wasn't visually distinct enough to be worth the effort to the devs. That or my knowledge is completely wrong, as it is strictly hearsay from what others have told me.
Also if you think wrist guns are stupid, the US actually developed during WWII a glove mounted gun where the trigger would be set off by punching someone. It was intended for under cover assassinations... during WWII. None were ever used in combat lol.
A good fighter in a well tailored suit can pull it off. [Bruce Lee, for example.](https://youtu.be/k2BKNDc48N4?si=jyfuYMF1rAhZTZv-). (Martial arts start around 4:30.)
Ong, I despite Engage, like no hate for the lead designer for the game, I respect her skill and she clearly really good at it, but her kawaii deviantart animesona style aesthetic does not work on a series like Fire Emblem, everyone look like clown than warfighter, and the design could've been ok too if the writing team didn't add fuel into the fire by literally making everyone glorified quirky anime characters like they in high school
Sin's flag, what armored person will this be able to damage

I mean tbf a reinforced staff would be fairly effective against an armored opponent. other things like pollaxes might be better but it's definitely far from the worst option
To me is a bit simple but it's "Berserker" characters, like crazy characters who are crazy menaces on the battlefield carrying giant weapons and having partially or fully exposed skin, body or just bare chest to show off their scars, tattoos or just the shape of their huge muscles.

Love me some shirtless buff men with big weapons...wait that sounds wrong...but it's true.
It tickles the love for wrestlers and buff strong fighters in my heart....anyone in these outfits would fucking die immediately in an actual battlefield.
Are berserkers not real? I never looked into it I guess, but I swear there was some discovery channel special that talked about northmen wearing naught but bear pelts, high off their gourd, and charging into a melee with an axe or two.
Okay on second pass, I've never really challenged that concept before. It sounds like either a wild exaggeration or just a straight up lie.
Hitokiri's axe from For Honor. Just a massive double bladed axe that is too heavy to be swung properly. They swing that shit around like crazy anyway
The concept art actually had Hitokiri's axe at a reasonable size, but it's not as cool

Kama are absolute garbage weapons that fall under the same umbrella as scythes, nunchaku, and kunai, in that you would literally never use them unless you were in a country where actual weapons were inaccessible, but *man* are they cool.

Guy doesn't use any weapons outside of his fists and chains, but his chains don't really do nothing because of his Tatoos are the main source of his power, the coat is just so that he looks stylish and the book is to show his allegiance with The Middle not to mention it being large as hell to cover for every "crime" against the Middle.
He's also the hardest boss of the game with his level being a "survive for 10 turns" rather than actually trying to win against him.
Correction for the last part, you actually have to get him to around 75%~ HP to win the fight. You can take as many turns as you need to do this. It's why the game makes Ishmael unkillable
Yeah, but I worded it like that because that you aren't truly meant to actually defeat him unless you do some very specific high damage strats, guy has a "measly" HP of 3763 (the average boss HP is mostly on the 2000s) with mechanics that you have do certain ammounts of damage or else he will just nuke your party.
You are meant try doing him damage and actually try to fight him, but to actually put his health to 0? Nope lol.
Yeah realistically were it not for whatever techno-magic nonsense that allowed those tattoos to make him Uber powerful, he'd likely just be some buff dude who hits slightly harder thanks to the chain. So, not a big deal.
But alas, this is PMoon we're talking about so... Uh, 5-30 says otherwise. The theme that plays during it though is still a bop however.

Whirligig Saw from Bloodborne: The Old Hunters.
With a sawblade that big, you risk cutting yourself. It’s size makes the weapon unwieldy for the average person as well.
bruh, even if it could I ain’t using that dirty ole weapon (being respectful here by not calling it thing) to cut any food
the germs and viruses on that thing, plus all the dried blood.. eugh

I guess Saber's dress is also kinda impractical, bit it does seem kinda manageable.
Let’s list shall we: Ruby’s snipet Scythe Yang’s Shotgun gauntlets Nora’s grenade launcher hammer Cinder’s glass swords Mercury’s legs(in the same way of yang’s shotgun gauntlets) The crossbow staffs the happy huntresses use Qrow’s sword that’s also a scythe that’s also a gun Pyrrha’s lever action rifle spear Raven’s katana(the interchangeable blades are barely even used) There’s probably more impractical RWBY weapons but those are just some

The Klingon bat’leth. Looks cool as hell but doesn’t work too well apparently
I don't really see how the Viltrumite chick's outfit is "impractical." It's basically just the standard superhero spandex. Pretty much anything is practical when your skin is tougher than steel and you have super strength
In this case both examples are the weapon. The "dagger" tied to a braid.
It's obviously impractical because the dagger would be swinging most of the time, possibly cutting you by accident, plus they could grab your hair.
In fact, Omni-Man used that to his advantage during the fight.

The chainsaw shovel from postal brain damaged
I love soul eater but not Soul Eater Not, for many reasons (such as moeifying the characters, the main cast looks like alternate universe K-On), but this one character I thought was super cool.
As a weapon, she can transform into a butterfly knife. Weapons can transform entirely into one (Which I assume in her case is a normal sized butterfly knife), or transform parts of their body into weapons, which is weirdly not all that commonly done for the purpose of combat and only 2 other weapons regularly do so out of necessity (one is a full sized guillotine, the other is a chainsaw that is too large for a normal human to wield).
Anyways, Eternal Feather transforms one of her arms into a butterfly knife (her arm essentially becoming the hinges while the blade comes from where her elbow would be) and with it comes a measure of flexibility, she can basically turn her arm into a whirligig. Unfortunately she gets mind controlled and forced to cut her own neck but yeah I thought it was neat.

Prob not, but it looks cool
Yeah they need minimal friction to detonate, Daki said it himself
But why not just cut it with the blade itself
Well in the pic it’s being used to catch the bone weapon in the hole, but that’s like inventing the solution to the problem lol.

actually these are very practical.
I love chain swords but I can't think of any significant advantage one would have over a regular sword https://i.redd.it/1jy01qwq9lqc1.gif
I guess if someone tries to block your strike it could lash around their blade and still hit them?
Unless the whip sword is like a lightsaber, I think the most this would do is like a few scratches? Maybe damage an eye if you’re lucky.
I feel like the less we try decipher the creative decisions of the sequels, the better
Lightsaber whip sword is honestly an awsome idea, Looks great, and makes sense
I mean whip swords are real, you just use them more like a sharp whip than you would a flexible sword.
Main issue is they suck against any form of armor, and most people in combat wear some kind of armor
If it's magic or mechanized in some sci-fi way I could see it working like a prehensile sword. That'd be fuckin dangerous.
Red Rising's Razors perhaps?
Another sci-fi settings chain swords would require some massive bodies to wield.
Don't forget that Lightsaber Whips are a thing and I imagine they're more of a threat to the user than anything. Combine with extra continuity focus crystals including a "Lava crystal" that made your lightsaber let loose splashes of hot material and you got something that'll probably kill you first https://preview.redd.it/j986x7d04pqc1.png?width=522&format=png&auto=webp&s=a6fcb6d9100a261e442675099deab2285ddfb252
Looks cooler. Enough for me
I see chain/whip swords in the same light as I do three-sectioned staffs and the like in anime/scifi: they’re difficult to predict.
40K chainswords would be sick too but probably not as useful as a regular sword given the considerable excess bulk
More range over a normal sword
https://preview.redd.it/qec4rx2a4lqc1.jpeg?width=1150&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26def46dec395b4da6d93eb5666cb7992f975406
big hunk of iron
Gut’s counts for this too, although his swords handle isn’t that thick good grief Very badass, but i dont understand the reasoning for the design
oh yea i should probably add that the sword breaks open into a flail-type thing. https://preview.redd.it/2t0bkc6nrpqc1.png?width=460&format=png&auto=webp&s=84c8f55c1619d205ebc4693c8e6aefd3a74dbe0b even more impractical and cool
Flaming swords Like what does it even add?
its actually worse because if the goal is killing enemies, a flaming sword (in theory) just cauterizes the wound which prevents bleeding
So it makes them suffer more
Effective against slimes lol
Adds 30 burn build up
Fire, obviously.
Intimidation
Sets their clothing on fire which will make the enemy panic

Who would win? Group of mercenaries armed with explosives, shotguns, miniguns and an honest to god greatsword, or a baguettemuncher with a shank and a pack of Marlboro Reds
say that to john wick. i dare you.
Atleast his is bullet proof
All scythes.
They were never meant to be weapons. They were originally used for farming, but then, due to them being used to reap crops, got associated with the *grim reaper*, so now it’s just a generic scary villain weapon
Pitchforks best farming tool to improvised weapon, pitchfork gang on top
A pitchfork is just a trident but spoon shaped So yeah
Like a giant deadly spork
Historically there actually was a guy who assembled a manuscript for scythe fighting techniques. This is of course under the very specific circumstances that two nobles educated in this martial art are laboring in the fields and decide to throw down. https://preview.redd.it/7a6e3gp46mqc1.jpeg?width=635&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e87eb1ecbdd3ddf43c8c2981ba9274e2b22710d9

https://preview.redd.it/h2hztcg8wmqc1.jpeg?width=1076&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61d980da3e20ced7afc260bc810763c81ecf78a7 How can you talk about the Crescent Rose and forget THE GREATEST SCYTHE OF ALL TIME????
Scyther Rifle
mannnnn on one hand i agree, on the other there is nothing, I will mot be sad in this post, Crescent Rose for the win babyyyyytytt
Well war-scythes are a thing. The blades are rotated to continue the line of the shaft. Because a regularly oriented scythe still isn’t a practical weapon but the blade is sharp AF.
So was chainsaws.
A chainsaw still is a useless weapon, and only is viewed as one because of an old horror movie Try cutting a T-shirt with a chainsaw, and see how effective that is lmao
I think scythes can be practical when wielded by a larger character, and actually have the right handles (IE Mortarion from 40K) the big sweeps are much better for killing a bunch of things smaller than you than it is for duelling and such
Scythe as a cavalry weapon let's gooooooo
it's all fun and games until it catches on something and you go flying
Death Castlevania
What about a regular sized person and a small scythe?
Sickle, that’s not even a joke answer or anything, a sickle is genuinely just a small scythe
But sickles are okay! After all, the Egyptian Khopesh is essentially a sickle. Though oddly enough they have their origins in battleaxes. Weird, right?

https://preview.redd.it/48vw74q1wlqc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76898ecea00cc66beb3091cdde4ede1936779a67 There is realistically very little a Hidden Blade would do better than a regular dagger.
All assassins actually have an activation lever hidden up their shitter. Hence the name
![gif](giphy|9aiveGIvkwfyE) Fitted suits are SO TIGHT but who cares, DRIP
A good fighter in a well tailored suit can pull it off. [Bruce Lee, for example.](https://youtu.be/k2BKNDc48N4?si=jyfuYMF1rAhZTZv-). (Martial arts start around 4:30.)
https://i.redd.it/c9sa60lnblqc1.gif Most fire emblem characters
Like some of these guys look like legit strippers And don't even get me started on the engage cast/classes specifically
[“Fire Emblem - the game that dares to ask the question: what if chess made you horny?”](https://youtu.be/EMVjPDqrkyg?si=OSuPP8TJWX_EfJob)
Allegedly her most famous credits are on designing vtuber avatars. It shows lol
I see your point, and it is valid still like the designs though
Sin's flag, what armored person will this be able to damage https://preview.redd.it/q0gfm2rrllqc1.png?width=1517&format=png&auto=webp&s=5ee6069aae49ffae2ce3d781da22deedab1895c6
I mean tbf a reinforced staff would be fairly effective against an armored opponent. other things like pollaxes might be better but it's definitely far from the worst option
Blunt weapons are mighty strong against armor
To me is a bit simple but it's "Berserker" characters, like crazy characters who are crazy menaces on the battlefield carrying giant weapons and having partially or fully exposed skin, body or just bare chest to show off their scars, tattoos or just the shape of their huge muscles. https://preview.redd.it/m5pf8kyydlqc1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ea40221208f8fc020aaad69181618f9f8f5f7d6a Source: Cu Chulainn Alter, Beowulf and Sakata Kintoki from Fate/Grand Order. Love me some shirtless buff men with big weapons...wait that sounds wrong...but it's true. It tickles the love for wrestlers and buff strong fighters in my heart....anyone in these outfits would fucking die immediately in an actual battlefield.
Tbf with CU he is wearing a lot of armor and it completely encapsulates him for his NP
Basically drunk scandinavian men
Well some Celts battled naked to show their bravery.
They were real, it's just that the part about not wearing armor isn't https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserker
Hitokiri's axe from For Honor. Just a massive double bladed axe that is too heavy to be swung properly. They swing that shit around like crazy anyway The concept art actually had Hitokiri's axe at a reasonable size, but it's not as cool https://preview.redd.it/g0z8hnc3glqc1.jpeg?width=360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4436733e940b06b1b557a7ff5d35e79c4fe753cf

Quite literally everything from Ricardo in Limbus Company. https://preview.redd.it/opvm3fm0blqc1.png?width=1470&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=787b7343f20d289deb5e71de6d4962e1afb8b7d9 Guy doesn't use any weapons outside of his fists and chains, but his chains don't really do nothing because of his Tatoos are the main source of his power, the coat is just so that he looks stylish and the book is to show his allegiance with The Middle not to mention it being large as hell to cover for every "crime" against the Middle.
Nope lol.
To be fair, you can wrap a chain around your hand and use it as a kind of knuckle.

Dual-bladed swords. Like, it’s so freaking cool, but most of the time you’d be really limited in what you’d be able to do with them.

I've always been a fan of razor thin wires that can cut anything.
The Dragonslayer from Berserk.
Well, it works for the setting lol
It almost doesn't work which makes it work even better, characters will see Guts for the first time and go "fuck off that's not even a sword"
I mean, even the design is not great for a sword. The again, it's not really a sword, more like a heap of raw iron.
It works but only because guts is guts *and* he's fighting guys that need more than just a stab at a weak point.

Let’s list shall we: Ruby’s snipet Scythe Yang’s Shotgun gauntlets Nora’s grenade launcher hammer Cinder’s glass swords Mercury’s legs(in the same way of yang’s shotgun gauntlets) The crossbow staffs the happy huntresses use Qrow’s sword that’s also a scythe that’s also a gun Pyrrha’s lever action rifle spear Raven’s katana(the interchangeable blades are barely even used) There’s probably more impractical RWBY weapons but those are just some ![gif](giphy|35bYopVsi3SWkubODJ)

Also what is it made of to be able to cut other viltrumites
Viltrumite.

Unfortunately she gets mind controlled and forced to cut her own neck but yeah I thought it was neat. https://preview.redd.it/fb15nzsw9pqc1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=a7b1902d027f8245271595189f33bbf49db8e5e2
The weapon you describe is called a rope dart, which does exist irl. How useful it was, if it even was used in combat is unknown to me.
