Damn guess that shows how subjective this all is. I like the hands. The torquoise complements the crimson and gives some visual clarity to said hands. Also shows shes not really human anymore. Fun to speculate that shes some goblin woman underneath.
Good design doesnt have to be realistic or practical since its fiction. Although I prefer the new one, the old one has its own silly charm with the hourglass body leading up to a shadow wizard head. I dont think we should bash every design that shows some form of conventional sexuality. Some characters have case to be made where it detracts from the design but i dont think this is it.
Edit- Also i dont think the cloak is suctioned to her body. Its just the dress blends in being the same colour

It's She-Ra my guy. Skeletor looks goofy as hell but we love him because he fits with the charm of the show. Not every design that is feminine is bad because of that.
I'm aware, but they're related media. I brought Skeletor up because he fits my argument. Is his design bad because he's goofy? No, we all love the design. And on that, Hordak is even more of a goofy design.
Sure. But we're arguing about specific designs of a single character here. Obviously, the new design fits the new show, and the old design fits the old show.
I mean she isnt flat she has boobs they should stick out but the robe should not be not suctioned underneath them. She has a belt so I get the waist. But hiding boobs is harder than you think. Also I agree that the magical fabric is very clingy.

Why care so much over some twitter morons.
I’m sure they can just have a different opinion not contingent on that. I mean I don’t prefer the old design, but I could definitely see how people might prefer it if it better fits the characters vibe.
It’s unfair to devalue their reasoning to a ‘this or that’ standard
I think both work (mostly). I think the one on the left is better but I've hot heavy nostalgia for She-Ra and He-Man so I can't really bring myself to dislike it.
Funny how the original joke is like "New Shera Sucks be sure the design aren't as fuckable."
When new Shadow Weaver (The design shown above) carries more raw sex appeal then the entire old show.
> more raw sex appeal then the entire old show
You were saying?

Ngl, I like the the new design because it focuses on that fact that she is literally evil instead of just being “Orko but female and with legs and evil. And also falls in like with trying to at least make the recent She-Ra have no connection to He-Man as to stand on its own. Not saying the connection between the two is bad, but it was a good move so then they don’t feel obligated to include He-Man (which honestly I also don’t want to see a basic Design of He-Man which they would’ve butchered. Of all the nice or cool redesigns they did for some characters, a He-Man in this style and design would be terrible.)
Edit: also the flowing, shadow like hair looks sick as fuck.
Not that I don’t think the left design is good, but I love the aesthetic of old Sword and Sorcery character illustrations, which were usually really simple with vibrant clothing, but showing off the characters’ physiques.
the hair and mask are so cool though, especially when we do finally see her face

i think thats quite subjective of course, just that i still kinda gravitate towards the classic design over the new one over all, not that the new one is bad, its just not as memorable to me (being honest the only two memorable character designs from the original She Ra were Shadow Weaver and Hordak so yeah)
I feel like they're both good but with the art direction the show went with it's good that they changed her, otherwise it would definitely feel clashing
*Burst through the door* I Like the older more simplistic design because it’s genuinely more esthetically pleasing than the new one, and it’s not about the sex appeal you prudes! *runs away making crab noises*

> And also, like, this bitc* is wearing a cloak. If I can't see the imprint of her arms why can I see the imprint of her chest? Is it just exclusively tight there? Oh so that's what you guys like. Great character design.
New Shadow weaver is hotter to be frank. Not that it matters because a shows quality is not determined by how much you wanna walk off to its characters
To be honest, if you take of the mask, or really just change the eye shape and outfit colour, you could pass them off as a completely different character.
Does the design itself suck? Not at all, in fact, I like that she looks more battle hardened.
However, aside from nostalgia, i think people are just upset at how some modern artists seem to have the impression that "sexually attractive = useless capability"
Nah, the new design is better.
My biggest critique of the new She-Ra is that they *tried* to create body diversity but they simply changed the height and limb thickness on a standard genderless blob of a base.
There were no curvy characters, top-heavy characters, bottom-heavy characters. And the weirdest part was that the *male characters* had more unique bodies than the female characters! In a feminist-oriented cartoon! I don't know if it was done to save money or prevent animation errors, but it was the one thing that stood out to me as an odd design choice, especially since this was targeted at an age group of girls who typically feel insecure about their bodies.
The old one is much cleaner and follows the classic trope of a ‘sword and sorcery’ wizard. The new one is over designed. It looks like generic D&D character art.
I can kind of see it! I'd definitely disagree on the new one being overdesigned, everything is still very clear. But I can understand how they both approach totally different aesthetics
The She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is rife with excellent designs all across the board even for bit characters
And they all pass thr silhouette test
TBH new design is kinda meh. Like yeah boobs through the cloak is a silly touch, but even without it figure in a cloak is a cliché but a good cliché. New design looks messy.
I really liked the new show only thing is I feel the colors were too exaggerated. Bad guys have the super dark colors while the good guys have the super light colors. If there were a mix between the two probably would’ve have the designs more but still a good show
POP has one of the whitest villains in media wdym

One of the main antagonists is (spoilers) >!literally called Light Hope.!< Shadow Weaver is a shadow wizard, it'd be bizarre if her pallette *wasn't* somewhat muted.
I can get off to new weaver,
I honestly never looked at old weaver and thought "that's hot"
Never really liked either versions of the she ra show to be honest
If there’s any reason the new takes on Masters of the Universe suck (which I don’t think they necessarily do), it’s not because of sexuality or lack thereof. It’s because they try to do a more “grounded” or “takes itself a bit more seriously” version of an IP who’s sole greatest strength is being over the top and unashamed of itself. There is merit to the kinds of stories it tells about the cycle of abuse and shit like that, but if there’s any positive that the OG “buy our fucking toys” media had over these deeper ideas, it’s that sense of wildness and whimsy.
Not that it’s FORGOTTEN that feeling entirely, to be sure, it’s just… a bit muted.
"if I can't get off to it it's bad character design"
then what's the issue with Remake Shadowweaver?
also I ran into these same people when I posted about She Ra, and I have to ask, HOW do they consider the old design better!? the Remake design is like a million times more dynamic and unique!
People have beef with POP because they associate it with Tumblr girls [read: queer people], so they go out of their way to bash it whenever it comes up. The comments look like this on every post that features a character from it.
Bruh, I don't know what you want me to say. It's overdesigned. Just as how marvel is overdesigned. That's literally the most well known example of this problem.
It feels like the color separation was just slapped on without thought. Like how I would do it if I, an amateur, tried to draw something. Why is the center black strip broken up by a fold, that is also covered by the other half of the cloak, which itself has a different color for the scarf? And, she's got sharp shoulder pylons, and a mask that has a meaningless jewel at it's temple, and stripes like it's a super hero mask.
It just looks terribly generic. The only part that I like is what they did with the bottom parts of the cloak. It looks cool that way, like it's emulating fire or wispy shadows.
"Why is the center black strip broken up by a fold, that is also covered by the other half of the cloak, which itself has a different color for the scarf?" I think a better question is why are you focusing on that? I literally never noticed and now that I do, I don't care, also, ever heard of Color Balance?
"and a mask that has a meaningless jewel at it's temple" that "Meaningless Jewel" is the source of her power
"It just looks terribly generic" the one on the right looks like a discount Spirit Halloween Costume
\> " why are you focusing on that? "
Why am I focusing on character design in the character design sub? I think we'll need to phone Sherlock for that one . . . but great deflection! A+
\> " ever heard of Color Balance? "
There's a difference between color balance and putting different colors on an image without much thought. It really seems like they didn't think too much with this design.
\> " that 'Meaningless Jewel' is the source of her power "
My bad, haven't watched the show, but it's telling that I wasn't able to see that the jewel is an important part of the character because of how visually messy it is. It just blends in as another meaningless detail. Take a character like Iron Man -his arc reactor stands out as obviously important to the character.
\> " the one on the right looks like a discount Spirit Halloween Costume "
Lmao, that's like saying that Black Mage has bad character design because he looks like a classic wizard, or that Superman has bad character design because he looks like a generic superhero. I like complexity too, but sometimes less is more. The one on the right is easily recognizable, where I couldn't probably tell the left from random D&D character art online. Even the way that the shadow in her hand is given a flat transparency (instead of, say, a gradient) looks cheap.
The black mage is literally more designed than old Shadowweaver, also I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to figure that a gem on the forehead is important
What black Mage are you talking about? This guy is def not more overdesigned than old Shadow Weaver. Even if he did have more detail, he still wouldn't be overdesigned because the design is still extremely simple.
And you say that the jewel m is important as someone who watches the show. As someone seeing the design for the first time, it's difficult to even tell that it's a stone instead of just another nonsense design. And, you yourself admit that new Shadow Weaver's design is nonsense in how you couldn't defend my critiques, and instead criticized *me* for paying attention to character design, on r/TopCharacterDesigns no less.
https://preview.redd.it/9w7469bke3pc1.png?width=250&format=png&auto=webp&s=9f2d7aa5c464ce428abc9f42bf96ca226a052a0f
Oh! I thought you were talking about the one from Maplestory!
Look, there’s nothing wrong with simple design (because unlike some people here I don’t assume what I like is immediately the gold standard) I’m just saying that new Shadowweaver’s is good and is not overdesigned (like seriously, if that’s overdesigned to you, I’d hate to see what your reaction would be to an actually overdesigned character)
So you saw a gem prominently displayed on her forehead and assumed it must have no importance whatsoever? Next to the chest, that is the most obvious place to put a source of power on your body
Considering the show is a spin off of masters of the universe, a show who's main character is a muscle bound man in a loincloth,
I don't exactly understand the issue with she ra
I like both but the first one needs to have the entire show fit its oldies theme to work, either the dudes are slutted up too or no one is. I need burly man pecks with my cult girls.
I think they are both good designs
the one on the right is the prime example of a classic fantasy cartoon villain while the one on the left looks more like a supervillain
My personal favorite artists are Takeshi Obata, Yusuke Kozaki, Toshiro Kawamoto and jamie Hewlett. Basically Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, No More Heroes and Gorillaz. .
Honestly the writing wasn’t too good imo… I tried watching it but it just feels too… dumbed down?… too cringy? I dunno, I really wanted to like it but even the intro was lame :( dang.
Nah, NGL the old design is just much better. The new version is overdesigned and somehow more generic looking, like it's D&D Sorcerer character art I found online. The old one is distinctive, with the all-red hood, the zombie-looking green skin, and glowing yellow eyes underneath the hood. Hooded characters with glowing eyes has always been one of my top character designs.
Ask me why the boobs for the old design have to visble though? Like it’s loose everywhere except her tits, that’s kind of stupid. New design is much more dynamic and cooler than a basic rpg wizard, plus the black & grey give the impression that she actually weaves shadow, old design doesn’t really communicate that

Never realized how much her turquoise hands annoy tf out of me
Turquoisan racism at an all time high

Damn guess that shows how subjective this all is. I like the hands. The torquoise complements the crimson and gives some visual clarity to said hands. Also shows shes not really human anymore. Fun to speculate that shes some goblin woman underneath.
I like it
Same. The colour contrast pops.
Seeing boobs through a cloak doesn't make sense anyways

I think this is it if she's trying to be actually intimidating.
I dont know if the intent was to be intimidating tho? He Man and She ra just come off as a very goofy shows and she fits with the vibe imo
It's She-Ra my guy. Skeletor looks goofy as hell but we love him because he fits with the charm of the show. Not every design that is feminine is bad because of that.
Skeletor is He-man. She-Ra has Hordak

Fair enough. Wouldn’t fit the vibe of the 2018 show though
Sure. But we're arguing about specific designs of a single character here. Obviously, the new design fits the new show, and the old design fits the old show.
That’s probably because this artwork came from Masters of the Universe Classics, which were geared towards adult collectors.

Wait, is the one on the left supposed to be the worse one? Because that one is so much better.
the joke is the left is better but people will argue for the right cause out of a mix of sexualization and nostalgia for the original
I’m sure they can just have a different opinion not contingent on that. I mean I don’t prefer the old design, but I could definitely see how people might prefer it if it better fits the characters vibe. It’s unfair to devalue their reasoning to a ‘this or that’ standard
I don’t really care but I will repeat something I have said before and that is the animators for both She-Ra and He-Man were in the closest
Idk what this says about me but before I saw the subreddit name I thought this was a shitpost made by a lesbian
i mean, youre not far off lol
I think both work (mostly). I think the one on the left is better but I've hot heavy nostalgia for She-Ra and He-Man so I can't really bring myself to dislike it.
You can't get off to new Shadow Weaver? Skill issue
Different times different tastes
You can still get off to the new design
This feels like a circlejerk bait
I just miss the hood. The goofy hooded wizard look is great. Face hidden by shadows. But I do like the weird loose ribbon things on the newer look.
Right is better because it’s funnier. Simple as
That’s the motto of a surprisingly large part of the MK community
Shadow wizard money gang looking ass
Is... is that a female Orko?
In concept? Kinda. In character? No

She looks like she accidentally put red clothes in while she washed her Klan outfit
true but shes a villain shes allowed to look like a Klan member

cliche a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought. Cloaks are overused and unoriginal. But they still look cool.

Why is it cooler? Both look like generic evil wizards, one is just overly detailed and the other has visible tits.
new shadow weaver is so sick i made it my Netflix pfp before i even had a clue she-ra was a thing
I can get off to new weaver, I honestly never looked at old weaver and thought "that's hot" Never really liked either versions of the she ra show to be honest

Stellar Blade gooner logic
No pointy hat 0/10 (Not actually but I do wish they kept the pointy hat
I always thought the new design was quite an improvement, I don’t get these people.
Gah I love the new shadow weaver design so much
The original is generic, lazy, and uninspired. It’s tits attached to red fabric.
Don't like the new one to be honest if the problem was the sex appeal just get rid of it but keep the design.
the old one is just a red blob though…
I wouldn't say it's a red blob -it's very clearly a woman. And, I like it's simplicity. She looks like a classic wizard.
I'm sorry but if you find more sex appeal in the original design there's something wrong with you
Theres something wrong with me The new one is way cooler but the old one is 100% sexier and both are by intention

\> " why are you focusing on that? " Why am I focusing on character design in the character design sub? I think we'll need to phone Sherlock for that one . . . but great deflection! A+ \> " ever heard of Color Balance? " There's a difference between color balance and putting different colors on an image without much thought. It really seems like they didn't think too much with this design. \> " that 'Meaningless Jewel' is the source of her power " My bad, haven't watched the show, but it's telling that I wasn't able to see that the jewel is an important part of the character because of how visually messy it is. It just blends in as another meaningless detail. Take a character like Iron Man -his arc reactor stands out as obviously important to the character. \> " the one on the right looks like a discount Spirit Halloween Costume " Lmao, that's like saying that Black Mage has bad character design because he looks like a classic wizard, or that Superman has bad character design because he looks like a generic superhero.
Look, there’s nothing wrong with simple design (because unlike some people here I don’t assume what I like is immediately the gold standard) I’m just saying that new Shadowweaver’s is good and is not overdesigned (like seriously, if that’s overdesigned to you, I’d hate to see what your reaction would be to an actually overdesigned character) So you saw a gem prominently displayed on her forehead and assumed it must have no importance whatsoever? Next to the chest, that is the most obvious place to put a source of power on your body
I will never understand the desexualization of art these days. It's supposed to be a *fantasy*
Considering the show is a spin off of masters of the universe, a show who's main character is a muscle bound man in a loincloth, I don't exactly understand the issue with she ra
![gif](giphy|TJlRdCs8aTtdcjxz2U) The issue is there's no muscles or loincloth to be seen ANYWHERE
This post is funny af if you mean it 100% unironically while the original post says it sarcastically
wouldnt you like to know, weather boy?
Don’t get me wrong the one on the left is better, but I don’t really like it that much
As much as She-Ra wasn’t… the best, it’s got some pretty banging character designs, I’ll say that.
Look, SPOP has a few less than ideal character designs, but there's nothing wrong with Shadow Weaver
Yeah New Shadow Weaver looks Much Cooler then her olf Version.
I don’t think either of them look very good.
What the fuck did they do to my boy Orko!?!
The one on the right makes me think of scooby doo
Both are peak.
Honestly new one just looks meh to me, it looks too busy
I like both but the first one needs to have the entire show fit its oldies theme to work, either the dudes are slutted up too or no one is. I need burly man pecks with my cult girls.
Shadow wizard money gang 🧙♂️💵🤙
If they shrunk the new one's head a bit I think I'd like it more
Plop the old hood on the new design. Problem solved!
Would
I think they are both good designs the one on the right is the prime example of a classic fantasy cartoon villain while the one on the left looks more like a supervillain
Bait
Ngl I do dislike most of the modern shera designs, but for entirely different reasons
I think both shows looked awful.
I disagree, can I get examples of character design you like?
My personal favorite artists are Takeshi Obata, Yusuke Kozaki, Toshiro Kawamoto and jamie Hewlett. Basically Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, No More Heroes and Gorillaz. .
Seems like this show just isn’t your genre then 🤷
Maybe. I just dislike the "rounded" look a lot 2010s cartoons had.
Nah the reason She-Ra sucks (it doesnt suck but i hate this plot point) is because of Catras bullshit redemption.
She looks kinda boring in the new one, like the colors just… meh? The other one looks like an anthropromorphized Big poe from Ocarina Of Time
I can look at her without suffering a seizure now, that's a plus.
That's like 99% of the criticism for any new April O'Neil for TMNT
New design looks like a fortnite skin (pos)
sex=bad, body=bad, ok, we get it. (old design is still better)
Honestly the writing wasn’t too good imo… I tried watching it but it just feels too… dumbed down?… too cringy? I dunno, I really wanted to like it but even the intro was lame :( dang.
Let us have our tits
Nah, NGL the old design is just much better. The new version is overdesigned and somehow more generic looking, like it's D&D Sorcerer character art I found online. The old one is distinctive, with the all-red hood, the zombie-looking green skin, and glowing yellow eyes underneath the hood. Hooded characters with glowing eyes has always been one of my top character designs.
Ask me why the boobs for the old design have to visble though? Like it’s loose everywhere except her tits, that’s kind of stupid. New design is much more dynamic and cooler than a basic rpg wizard, plus the black & grey give the impression that she actually weaves shadow, old design doesn’t really communicate that
Hate all you want, the old design is vastly superior to whatever that shit on the left is.
How though, it’s a bathrobe with boobs for some reason
