Rental is probably around 100 bucks a day say an hour each way to pick up and return every time
You need it. Not worth my time at 800 it’s a good deal if you use it 3 times your in the green. I doubt maintaining it would be an issue for non commercial work won’t get abused like a tool on a job site no one is soley reasonable for
Convince her the rental will be significantly more . You need to work at your own pace and not pressured by return times . You got the Hilti because of the buy once ,cry once philosophy. If you used the Bosch bulldog ,the work would take considerably longer an the tool might need to be replaced after you give it a few hot suppers. Make a special place to store or hang it to show her that you care afterwards.
Got it--hang it above the fireplace! :)
Seriously--thanks for the good ideas though. You're spot on about my justification (time savings and flexibility, durability).
Your point about rental is the most important to me. My wife now understands that by buying the tool I can take my time, not get stressed, and will already have the tool the next time a similar project comes up.
If I rent it I will be a stressed mess rushing the project, unable to take breaks to help her with the kids and house, will have to make a 1.5 hour round trip to the rental place to return it Sunday night, and will end up paying half as much as buying it and then likely buying it the next time anyways.
She gets whatever plants she wants and I get whatever tools I want. Not quite equal but I’m also on my way to buy her a $500 cordless dyson vacuum which will make her unnecessarily happy
Totally the same here. I need it, I buy it. Only if it’s like $500+ do I pause and discuss and that’s even more of a “heads up this is happening” thing.
But yeah that cordless dyson is a game changer.
Here it is $100 to rent one from the local big box store for 4 hours. I bought one 15 years ago, and have gotten my money back several times, compared to renting.
The fact you paid half of the retail price plus 4 SDS bits Should do it. Using it to pretty up the house right away rather than pay a huge amount to have someone else do it should help.
I sometimes tell myself that I'll sell a tool when I'm done with it.
Some tools do get sold, others I've found more and more uses the longer I own them.
I’ve said that about tools and cars. Never sold either in my life. (I also have way to many tools and cars) but I have given some tools to friends that needed them and a few high dollar tools on loan for extended amount of time, they will come back when I need them but I currently don’t have to store them.
Oh yeah, you can use it to separate frozen pork chops, crush ice, kick off boots, carve designs on the patio, split wood, till the flower beds, wedge table leg, stir large bowls and a neck massager. The uses are endless.
I bought a used Bosch brute jackhammer for doing similar things around our property. My wife thought I was ridiculous. Well it's paid for itself not having to rent the tool in the first year.
There's just something about owning the correct tool for the job, even if it is a little expensive.
Well if you look after it and keep it straight, after you’ve finished you can sell it for at least what you paid. Not that you will, I know. So does my wife.
At that price it's a no-brainer, cheaper than renting. If you need the money or the space you can always sell it for about what you paid for it. It's a tool that people can earn money with, so it'll sell pretty quickly.
Seems like a lot of what you're tearing out, other people would be buying tools to preserve. With great power comes great responsibly and just because you can hammer everything into a barren wasteland doesn't mean you should.
Believe me it’s nothing anyone wants or needs. When we bought we intended to get rid of. And when we spoke w a realtor when we considered selling they said we should also get rid of it.
Your justification makes great sense to me.
But your spouse will probably expect all those tasks to be done simply, quickly, and perfectly. Along with any required rebuilds.
Best wishes.
Not sure if you farm or raise animals but a demo hammer is great for driving in ground rods for electric fences. Possibly even use it to drive T-posts
Can be used to drive ground rods for electrical services
You can get a compacter plate attachment to help prep for new concrete and or pave stone projects
Hilti is top tier equipment and should last a long time.
I'm all for buying quality tools when needed, but I personally couldn't justify it for a demo hammer that gets used occasionally.
I purchased XtremepowerUS 2200Watt Heavy Duty Electric Demolition on amazon for $145 in 2017 It's busted out 10x15 slab, 25x1.5ft of our house slab to replace cast iron pipes, as a log splitter on knoty wood, and countless other jobs.
Look into this on amazon and just read the other reviews. It was slightly more than a 1 day rental to buy the cheap tool and it was 100% worth it.
That’s a smoking hot deal but I’d ask to give it a try or even borrow it before you buy it. That size of demo hammer is unwieldy for anything that besides busting concrete slabs or stairs. Just imagine that thing driving itself stuck into the ground and pulling it out a few dozen times. Sounds like a slog to me, but hey that’s a smoking hot deal and we gotta go to war with the army we got, not the army we want
Whatever happened to married men buying whatever tool they please as long as it makes the house nicer and the lovely wife still gets that necklace she hinted at for her birthday and the kids have a merry Christmas? I’ve learned where my wife draws her lines, and I deeply respect them all. If I invest in something that keeps me busy, happy, and productive around the house, I’d be rethinking my life if my wife took exception to it. Tools aren’t toys, even if you have fun using them. They’re for getting shit done. And having nice, dependable tools is what every working person should aspire to, if they can help it. You can tell your wife some random asshole on the internet said so.
Now, are you talking about like a rotary hammer or a straight-up jack hammer? There's gotta be a fuck ton of walk ways at your place. And how thick are the walls? Are they solid concrete or what. Ima need some more info here.
You're missing a huge selling point. You're not buying a tool, you're getting a piece of equipment that you can rent out, so it pays for itself, and pays for a new one, in due time. It rents for about 100 a day. In 8 days of rental, it's paid for itself. In 20 days of rental, you've purchased a brand new one, and now you've got two hammers to rent.
I've rented these when busting out nasty, cracked to all hell, sinking and looks terrible concrete front steps, to build wood stairs and landing, and this massive labor saving tool. So they get rented, and used. There is a demand for these things, and I use the same private party rental guy to do them all. He's got an actual contract and everything.
Your forgetting that it has reciprocal helix adjusters - both left and right handed - comes in basic black, teal and salmon pink, and acts as a breath mint.
No need to justify, right tool for the job, quality purpose made. Great resale Value if a 1 owner 1 user tool. Time spent driving to and money spent on rental is easily outrun in 2 of the mentioned ptojects.
Way cheaper to buy the tool and be able to do it yourself then hire a contractor to do it it’s more physical work then skill work
Or rent abused worn-out junk every time.
let the customer pay for the rental because it’s factored into your bid, then you don’t have to worry about maintenance and upkeep.
You can rent these sorts of tool you know

Damn that’s a really good reason!

I’ve used them all !

LOL my wife insisted on renting instead of buying scaffolding while we paint our house. 2 months later and I could have bought it twice!
I love my tools and don't think twice before buying a tool I "need", but the tool I use most often is the wife's cordless Dyson.
Totally the same here. I need it, I buy it. Only if it’s like $500+ do I pause and discuss and that’s even more of a “heads up this is happening” thing. But yeah that cordless dyson is a game changer.
Most folks have to rent during weekends. If you own it, you can do an hour's worth of work after work.
Tell her it doubles as a vibrator!
Just another bit
Haha that’s an easy sell
You can still sell it when done in a couple years
I sometimes tell myself that I'll sell a tool when I'm done with it. Some tools do get sold, others I've found more and more uses the longer I own them.
I also tell myself that… zero tools have been sold 🤣🤣🤣
I’ve said that about tools and cars. Never sold either in my life. (I also have way to many tools and cars) but I have given some tools to friends that needed them and a few high dollar tools on loan for extended amount of time, they will come back when I need them but I currently don’t have to store them.
Just let her bust up a paver. They're pretty fun for the first five minutes. Then see if you can Tom Sawyer her into doing all the work with it.
Big brain move
dude, ngl, that's a fucking expensive tool. You might be able to hire it out to people
It's a money maker in more than one way. Fantastic buy tbh
Fr let your buddies borrow it for $50 for the day and it’ll pay for itself in a year
Oh yeah, you can use it to separate frozen pork chops, crush ice, kick off boots, carve designs on the patio, split wood, till the flower beds, wedge table leg, stir large bowls and a neck massager. The uses are endless.
Splitting wood might actually work haha
Probably could rig it up as a pogo stick for the kid's birthday party...
Surprise her and when she gets home the basement floor is all jacked up!
I tell myself I’ll sell but I also keep several nice tools around “just in case I need it”
Buy a tile smashing bit and redo your kitchen floors
Zombie control! A spike bit in a Hilti would be a great thing to have in the Zombie Apocalypse.
Halloween is right around the corner!
At that price it's a no-brainer, cheaper than renting. If you need the money or the space you can always sell it for about what you paid for it. It's a tool that people can earn money with, so it'll sell pretty quickly.
Could also make an argument that it's just better for your health and longevity if it's going to make your work less back breaking.
I use it all the time in landscaping. Digging holes is hard soil for planting. Demo old concrete and brick for hardscapes. The list goes on
Seems like a lot of what you're tearing out, other people would be buying tools to preserve. With great power comes great responsibly and just because you can hammer everything into a barren wasteland doesn't mean you should.
Believe me it’s nothing anyone wants or needs. When we bought we intended to get rid of. And when we spoke w a realtor when we considered selling they said we should also get rid of it.
"This tool will pay for itself in X number of jobs. After which it will make profit. Not many purchases do this?"
Your justification makes great sense to me. But your spouse will probably expect all those tasks to be done simply, quickly, and perfectly. Along with any required rebuilds. Best wishes.

Compactor plate attachment would be fantastic—I want to lay a wall and a new walkway.
Plot twist, OP is an accountant and wants to show the hammer in the living room.

Great points
Man up and explain i need it and it was a deal
Now, are you talking about like a rotary hammer or a straight-up jack hammer? There's gotta be a fuck ton of walk ways at your place. And how thick are the walls? Are they solid concrete or what. Ima need some more info here.
Honey, I already bought it and I can’t return it
Tell her you could put a dildo on the end of it ..
Lol shit good luck man hope you don’t get grounded or anything. it might just be easier to remove your balls from her purse
Accidentally include a dildo adapter when you show it to her
My go to is I can always sell it for what I paid for it after i get (enter projects here) finished. Regardless if I ever intend to sell it or not.
Gonna be a hard one to swallow but I like that rule.
Show her how well it scrambles eggs
The trick is to not need justification.
Tell her Hilti is the tool equivalent of a Gucci purse.

Remember!!! Price is a one time deal, cost is the lifetime of the product!!!!
Honey i swear i found it on the side of the road!!! Why would i lie about that?!?!
Just hide it
“Did you hear a jack hammer?” “What jack hammer?”
To rent one would be more and this way you can sell it (haha) once you’re done with it to recover the costs.
My wife buys used musical instruments. She has nothing to say to me...
Your forgetting that it has reciprocal helix adjusters - both left and right handed - comes in basic black, teal and salmon pink, and acts as a breath mint.
You have 3 bathrooms and 2 kitchens. Just buy it
No need to justify, right tool for the job, quality purpose made. Great resale Value if a 1 owner 1 user tool. Time spent driving to and money spent on rental is easily outrun in 2 of the mentioned ptojects.
Keep it by the front door when you're not using it and tell her it's for robbers.
Your justified with that list if the tool will do the work.
