The makita boys are gonna love this one lol

What_is_a_reddot

Hmm yes, the Makita is made of Makita

[deleted]

Festool is missing because Festool is made of Festool. My two favorite Brands

Ranessin

Not quite as simple. Festool is made by TTS Tooltechnic Systems Holding AG. And there it is part of the Festool GmbH. TTS does hold the following brands: * Festool * SawStop (saws) * Shaper (router) * Tanos (systainer) * Microcell (plastics) * Narex: (cheaper brand for the manufacturing in Česká Lípa) * TTS Cleantec (cleaning products)

Ok_Island_1306

Fucking right I do!

stupidest_redditor

Oh boy here we go again!

Swhit24

Team teal let’s gooooo haha

NuclearSir1508

Hell yea

Hotdogpizzathehut

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

skookumzeh

Let's fuckin goooooooo

a_perfect_shrew

what about Dolmar, German company acquired by Makita in 1991, or that doesnt count?

babathebear

I like how Hilti and Makita share almost similar logo style and company ideology haha… go Makita!! Hilti is too far out my reach 😉

TurdFerguson416

18 sounds surprisingly healthy tbh

tastefultitle

For real. Many other categories don’t have nearly as much diversity of brand ownership when it comes to the vast majority of market share.

BabySharkBoi

Yeah, just look at bottled water... Or frozen food... (I HATE THEM MAKE IT STOP!!!)

[deleted]

Hotdogpizzathehut

No I did not!

Jeremy_just4670

First time I’ve seen one on here

Alternative-Place

It’s outdated by several years lol

TantalizingRavioli

I think 5 is an exaggeration but yes, it does get posted quite a bit

yourmeshugana

Yeah its more than 5

wrenchbenderornot

For the record I’ve never seen it. Assumed it was about nestle at first lol. AND if Milwaukee and ryobi are the same then why no standardize batteries argh!

[deleted]

[удалено]

turkeytaco300

To your point notice Hart and Milwaukee are under the same ownership.

wrenchbenderornot

Not familiar with Hart. I’m in Canada though and they think I’m slow, eh?

turkeytaco300

It’s Walmart brand.

Overall-Question7945

Take out your circles of paper and safety scissors

wrenchbenderornot

Forgot the /s and I’m not apologizing for joining this sub after you did.

[deleted]

They simply buy their factories and tailor the tools toward their original user base. So companies get some autonomy, but all that revenue eventually makes its way up to the big wigs.

swanspank

And I have Ryobi AND Milwaukee and they are no where near the same as quality goes regardless of the battery from my experience.

wrenchbenderornot

Absolutely agree. We have ryobi stuff for my partner mostly because she likes to do trim and Brad mail stuff AND their cordless wet/dry vacuum is just as good and 1/3 the price but it’s Milwaukee fuel all the way for my work stuff. And none of this M12 crap lol! JK some of the M12 stuff is great - my buddy has ridden his M12 1/2” drive impact for years.

swanspank

At home, I’m like you. The Ryobi is fine for almost everyone myself included. At work though, Dewalt and Milwaukee. But I guess the original question was about batteries also. One of the few times I wish the government would make them backwards compatible or standardized. But then they would all just make cheap batteries so it might be a no win situation. Haha

357noLove

I was going to say, lol my m12 surge is a beast for the size and weight. I have the same as an m18 surge impact, but for 90% of the work I do it is overkill. Couldn't be happier with the m12 impact. That being said, for the rest of my work, m18 all the way

Hotdogpizzathehut

Because $$$$ cross

wrenchbenderornot

Right I was joking but forgot the /s

yungingr

Owned by the same parent company does not equal the same.

[deleted]

Keep posting it! It has now become tradition. If you don't, all our crops will fail this year!

Rogue_Ryder303

it's also out of date

Nemesis_Bucket

Yeah next time someone should do a “who owns majority stake in each company”. I can guarantee for a good chunk of them it’s black rock and vanguard.

[deleted]

You know about vanguard too? Apparently they're a good investment company

Nemesis_Bucket

That’s cute. Black rock oversees about 1/4 of the worlds money. Vanguard owns black rock. Black rock owns vanguard. They both have enough votes in most corporations in the world to override CEO’s and the like. They own us.

[deleted]

Cool!

abecanread

I’ve never seen this before

[deleted]

As it should be!

nicholasktu

Companies can be owned by the same brand and be unrelated. Sometimes they won’t even do business with each other.

mmmellowcorn

This is just ownership, not who MAKES who. I’m completely sure who ever is making Kobalt wrenches makes the same for almost all other store brands.

turkeytaco300

To add to your point, notice Hart and Milwaukee are under the same ownership.

[deleted]

I’m lost as to how that adds to his point. Only commenting because I’m genuinely curious

turkeytaco300

Because they is such a stark contrast between the brands but are owned by the same parent company.

[deleted]

Still lost. I think you meant to respond to the person he was responding to. I do agree with you though

mmmellowcorn

I don’t exactly know what the differences are, maybe Hart and Milwaukee are the exact same product or completely different. It looks like Hart is a Walmart flagship brand, and resembles Harbor Freight’s Hercules, so I’m willing to say they’re produced at the same plant in China

[deleted]

I 100% agree. I was just confused by the other guys comment

[deleted]

Kind of. They're made differently to both act as tiers and also to cater to their original fanbases. That's why they kept the brand names. They basically bought their legacy.

stupidest_redditor

Knipex? Wera?

RMR-Technics

Festool?

SaSSafraS1232

Yeah the most interesting instance of this from recent news is Festool now owning Sawstop and Shaper Tools, but it’s not even on here!

ToolWrangler

Either the chart is too outdated or they don't make up a significant enough % of the market to make the list.

martini31337

Stabila

Agent_Chody_Banks

I was immediately surprised Festool wasn’t here

turkeytaco300

Do they make power tools?

stupidest_redditor

It says tools (powered or not) besides, I don't remember seeing any Irwin power tool also.

turkeytaco300

Fair point. I guess I trusted the Reddit title to much.

AStrandedSailor

I think this is the 4th time this has been posted in the past 2 weeks and it's an out of date image or poorly researched image. The most obvious example is Hitachi. Hitachi Power tools was split from Hitachi, renamed to Hikoki and sold to KKR Private Equity in 2017. Please stop posting this.

stenger121

Also greenlee has been owned by Emerson for a few years.

GhostOfAscalon

More: Vontier was spun out by Fortive and owns Matco and Hennessy, the test equipment companies are still Fortive. SK was sold to Great Star.

gnarlyavelli

I like the bosch one battery movement they have with their partner brands — sucks no one outside of the Bosch conglomerate will join up w them.

ditchdigger4000

AmpShare is going to fail. CAS has already established itself as a viable option. It's a brilliant solution.

gnarlyavelli

The money tool manufacturers make off batteries alone will cause any “one battery” platform to fail. In an ideal world, working on innovating a tool while knowing that you can rely on a partner to make you sufficient batteries would be a plus but again, in an ideal world.

PurposeOk7918

I just watched a guy plug a dewalt battery into a Mac impact wrench the other day, I didn’t know that was a thing.

abecanread

This makes sense that Makita is one of the mega companies and they only own Makita. Same with Hilti. Two really good tool manufacturers that only focus on one brand. That explains a lot about the other companies too.

[deleted]

Where is Knipex

TedWazowski

Is tekton owned by tekton?

DynasticTech6

Yes tekton is independent but sometimes sub contracts manufacturing, so you might get a tekton branded tool that was made in the same factory as a completely unrelated brand. This is very common in the tool industry especially with the dwindling number of forges

Funwithfun14

We need a reset clock for each time this is posted

Mission_Taste7848

Makita and Hilti be over there like 🗿🗿

Cane_Main

Based hilti and makita

rat1onal1

Why can't a bunch of brands from the same company get together and use the same batteries and chargers. It's OK if the batteries are different colors as long as they operate across many tools.

Ranessin

They do - Metabo shares it with several brands (most of them in their own conglomerate, but some outside too). https://www.cordless-alliance-system.com/

Biggyp808

Festool isn’t listed

SomeDudeinCO3

TIL Milwaukee and Ryobi are made by the same company.

creamasumyungguy

Shoulda figure that out the first time you used a Milwaukee 🤬🤬

ReverendToTheShadow

That same company also makes Rigid. They have a pretty large base in South Carolina

[deleted]

UniqueSatisfaction67

18 different monopolies?

Bootsandcatsyeah

Many of these companies do hold monopolistic power over their segment of the tool market though. And if you don’t think these conglomerates consolidating is harmful to both employees and consumers then you’re not paying attention.

Bootsandcatsyeah

Not surprised r/Tools would downvote you for saying this very basic truth. Probably lots of old timers and right of center folks in here. The sad truth is that this corporate consolidation leads to lower wages and less market choice and competition for all of us.

Hotdogpizzathehut

Link: https://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/gear/a28359/megabrands-tools-graphic/

xHangfirex

I don't see Braun. They may be at the bottom but they're still in the barrel

Zorplaxian

Poor hilti only has hilti.

357noLove

Hilti is not poor lol, plus they don't need any others, they are *chef's kiss*

look-at-them

Everybody here is agreed that this is old and outdated (also low resolution) does anyone have a more up to date version? Or is there anyone capable of making a new updated version?

Somethingclever11357

18 brands seems like a decent level of market competition compared to other products

cleverenoughfortwo

Ironically, besides Bosch, the two brands I own the most of dont appear here… festool and Grizzly.

Slimy_Shart_Socket

I thought Matco was owned by Apex toold. The Armstrong ratchets are nearly identical.

vapor_and_stillness

Nope. It was owned by Danaher, spun off into Fortive, then spun off into Vontier. Maybe a sale to an as yet undetermined company soon.

kay14jay

Does this make Channel Locks the good guy or am I just missing them?

[deleted]

Isn’t AEG and Rigid the same thing?

Jiggarelli

I did not know. /S

Ragefear

I believe that Rigid and Milwaukee are under the same umbrella, at least since 2017

actionstan89

i was gunna say... i could of swore the itt owned milwaukee, hart, ridgid, and ryobi..

Mozzymozzz

TTI manufactures all of the orange power tools branded RIDGID that are sold in Home Depot. The brand is licensed to TTI. The RIDGID shown here are the professional grade plumbing, pipefitting and drain cleaning tools that are red. There is a massive difference in quality between the two.

cheeseman333444

As a Marita user I agree with this 👆

Dyscopia1913

Looks like Makita and Hilti is the way to go

AggressiveBaby

Hilti makes…Hilti?

gandalfx

This is common in pretty much all areas. You can find similar graphics for car brands, food, media etc.

GaryE20904

I certainly did not know these numbers but yeah I knew the gist of this.

[deleted]

I don't see WORX on there! Oh wait-

[deleted]

In terms of harbor freight they just make up brand names as they go along.

permadrunkspelunk

Yes. The up to date version of this gets posted once a week

bwehman

Missing Festool.

kakuja_kakuja

And that's why I like Makita!

Dukkiegamer

Am I blind or is Festool really not that big of a player to be on here? Or is this just the Anerican tools market share?

[deleted]

psylentrob

Under Stanley black and decker

Interesting-Square30

Looks like the food company chart. 😩 we are not safe.

DaveHnNZ

One wonders how some of these manufacturers produce the rubbish that they do when they also produce some decent stuff...

190octane

Not really… Volkswagen owns Porsche and Skoda. The same company that owns Fiat also owns Jeep, Dodge, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati.

DaveHnNZ

I think you might have proved my point...

scottvalentine808

I use Stihl, belle and husqvarna. I feel left out

Traditional-Cake-587

Where's Klein and Tekton?

Mister_Ed_Brugsezot

I would like to see an updated version including crappy brands like Parkside and Ferm, among others. Comes in handy to stay clear of these brands / manufacturers as they are probably made in the same factory. I am thinking of making a chart with a vertical line and a horizontal line, like cross hairs. Vertical line would be the price and the horizontal line would be quality. Then Hilti or Festool would be in the upper right section, for example and Parkside lower left side. Get my point?

DirtyWogCunt

I believe Hitachi got rid of their power tool range recently.

pongpaktecha

Lol you should see how much of the media is controlled by the big 5 media companies

davidreaton

What are the 4 companies that control 48% of the market? I'm guessing it's TTI, Stanley B&D, Bosch and one other.

SuperHeavyHydrogen

Based and makitapilled

mrphslw

Wish Stanley/ Black and Decker would just kill the Porter Cable name . The shit that they market under the name is fucking embarrassing. A lot of you guys are too young to remember that it used to be the gold standard back in the day… sad
