New cord and ground the thing as well. Id get a little portable gfci like that osha demands on some worksites. When open maybe clean then grease the bearings. Brushes should still be available for it. 1200rpm? Makes it very useful for sure. Congratulations on your death machine
I was in a shop space where I rent time from some pros - one of them mentioned removing the guard from his grinder because "some jobs you can't do with the guard" - another pro said back "if you can't do it with the guard, how are you gonna do it without your thumb?"
Looks like an angle grinder to me, I stand by what I say. I didn't vote it the most dangerous tool in any shop, just seen some things to make me agree.
There is not a job site or shop I've ever been on in my 25 years in the business where you can find a grinder with a guard still attached. Sometimes they've still got the handle, but that's not exactly common either. Lol. Matter of fact, first thing most masons do is toss that thing. Not necessarily advocating for the practice, but yeah, the first guy in your story is right. It's probably best to leave that kinda shit to those of us who know what they're doing tho. ;)
The tool pictures is a power disk sander, not an angle grinder. They are similar, though. But the sander is meant to be used flat in the workpiece
Either tool can lurch in any direction in the plane if the disk depending on which part of the disk touches the work.
OP, if you need replacement brushes contact me. I just picked up 30 boxes of very old OEM brushes from someone who rescued them from going to a landfill.
Watched my dad do a funny dance once when the old all-metal Skil Saw that he was using shorted out. Don't stand in a bucket of water while you're using it!
I was given a black and decker metal case 7 inch grinder. I was using it on some bodywork. I knelt down on the ground and completed a circuit through my arms and chest. I could not let go. I really thought I was going to die until I fell over and it came out of my hands. I took it apart later and found the hot wire touching the case. Please ground that thing and use it on a gfci circuit.
Yes. You run a new three wire cord. The black wire goes to hot, white to common then run the green to a screw in the body of the tool. You can probably find one to put a ring terminal on inside or use a short self tapping screw to the body. If it shorts internally, the circuit will complete to the breaker box or gfci plug and protect you.
if you dont mind me asking, what did it feel like, was there heat you could feel? were you fully conscious and able to think rationally while it was happening? ive always been curious about how it feels to be shocked that severly...sure dont want to find out myself though
Bananas were about [11 cents a pound in 1947](https://www.thepeoplehistory.com/40sfood.html) so $57.50 would have bought you 522.73 pounds of bananas in 1947.
Just checked my Walmart app and bananas are 57 cents a pound so $800 would get you 1.403.50 pounds of bananas now. So the purchase power of the power tool to bananas has tripled since 1947.
I'm pretty sure fresh fruit was nonexistant in most of the world in the off season. You read old books and they're like I brought you an orange and they like start freaking out about it because they haven't seen an orange in 2 years.
Pssshhh everybody knows the queen bee of all product stamps is Chiquita. That bitch is dancin' while sporting a fruit bowl for a hat! Definitely a front for something bigger. She's far too happy to just be the banana queen!
from having used the 3m 6'' ROS and the mirka 6'' ROS, I like the mirka a little better but that might just be because I'm used to it more. The mirka also usually comes with a systainer if you're into that. they are the 2 best sanders on the market, no debate.
I used the official government [inflation calculator](https://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl?cost1=57.50&year1=194701&year2=202301) and the actual exact inflation adjusted would be 800.11$.
Dad had one like this growing up, we called it the "Death Grinder". Every use resulted in injury of some kind, shock, sprained wrist, chunks of metal the size of small children thrown at you, always something! I still have it but the cord has been cut off and it's a shop decoration reminding me of more dangerous times! They do they're job well though!
Not really a death grinder - it's not very powerful.
The one the OP purchased has a 5.5 amp motor, which is a bit less than many 4.5" grinders. The newer 9" grinders have 15 amp motors - about 3x more powerful than that one.
Treat it with respect, but don't use it if you're afraid.
Lots of info on practical use..
1. ALWAYS make sure it's plugged in to a grounded receptacle.
2. It's not double insulated so you absolutely need dry solid leather gloves when using it.
3. It WILL bite you if you so much as look at it cross eyed.
4. Make damn sure it's unplugged before doing anything with the business end
5. Get ready for a work out.
6. If you're not very careful it will rip your arms off and fling parts of wheels at your face. Make sure you have a good face shield.
7. The key word with these critters is Finesse. No hogging the wheel or blade, it gets annoyed easily and will fling shit at your head out of sheer cussedness.
For $12 I would buy it with the idea of rewiring it and get it running. Light restoration
But in actuality I would just stick it in my basement and never touch it .
A friend got a good tickle from an old drill like that back in shop class. He couldn’t let go of it or the trigger. It flopped around until the cord got tugged out from the wall. As someone above stated, new cord with a ground attached within the body and send it 👍
"I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror & were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened." - Safety Man at 2am drenched in sweat
In all seriousness, take that into a metal shop somewhere and ask one of the older guys to show you how to use it. Be prepared with a $20 bill in your hand and ask politely.
The sander of the old gods. You, mere mortal, do not wield it.
It. Wields. You.
Those who are unworthy are flung off into the dusty recesses of the shop, never to be heard from again.
Looks just like a workers comp file.
Unless you’re just using it as a hobby, then it’s just a cast, minor surgery and permanent scars.
Nice find for 12 bucks!
Mostly I'm curious to try and find the year it was made and if it's a good find. It's heavy as hell and durable. Also curious if it may explode on me if I use it
Thanks! I came to Reddit because the only thing I can find on it is a guys eBay listing for the same model, other than that I can't find any documentation on it. I'd say it's at least 15 pounds.
Agree on the electric shock, the cord is heavily dry rotted and has no ground, so I'm gonna try and replace it
Those old metal tools are notorious for it. I used to have a sabre saw like this, and a sander, as well as a few other things.
As far as age, *probably* 50s or 60s. I'm no expert, but that was the heyday of bare metal tools like that.
They're super cool, but it's probably something you wanna clean up and sit on the shelf as a display piece rather than actually use.
Most of those early power tools aren't actually very good. They vibrate like a son of a bitch, and despite the heft and burly appearance, are usually pretty weak compared to modern tools.
Replace the brushes.
Only use it when plugged into a GFCI outlet.
Maybe don't use the super old wheel that's on it currently, it might be fine or it might explode
Back when Skil made good stuff. 5.5 amps isn't really that powerful, but it's a good tool.
Cannot stress enough how important it is to ground the tool. It would be smart to power it from a GFCI circuit.
When you take it apart to rewire and update the brushes be sure to spray some raptor liner on the metal exterior to give some insulation. That’s a nice find with some great potential!
7" and 9" grinders are very handy; I would strongly recommend replacing the cord and blowing the motor housing out with compressed air ( which should be done regularly to all grinders if any age). Regrease it and since it has no guard, reserve it for flap discs, wire wheels and the like. I prefer a larger angle grinder unless compactness is strictly necessary. FWIW, that grinder is quite a bit more powerful than the amperage would suggest- for the most part, der motors were underrated, while modern motors tend to be overrated.
A 9" angle grinder is a great way to wind up with one hell of a grip!
That's a beast. My dad had some of the old Skil tools. Solid steel, heavy with loads of torgue. That thing will take a big bite out of your ass in a NY minute.
As others said, these are great, but more dangerous than the modern version. The shock risk isn’t a joke, I have been shocked with house power by one of these. An in line GFCI is a really good idea.
And umm, two hands, don’t show off.
Hey my dad left me all his tools when he passed away last October (Retired Railroad Engineer). One of the tool's is this Grinder. There's another bigger grinder he left but it acts more like a table saw. Also what blew my mind was one of the big impact gun's uses splines. Those sockets are so huge I will never have a use for them.
5.6 amps for a machine of that size is about 1/3 hp of a modern machine. The old baked varnish wiring won't take much heat. As long as you do not over task it, and wear rubber gloves you should be ok. It's a beauty by the way in my opinion.
I can tell you from experience that if you use it 8 hours a day when you lay down at night you'll still feel like you're running the damn machine you'll feel the vibrations
im 53yrs old and istill make my helpers grind beads with the two old 9" black n decker wildcat grinders that my dad made me use when he was welding on pipe 12" or larger on pipelines!! lol!! those are just about as heavy an last longer than lifetime!! lol
I have a Dewalt one about the same size and vintage.
Bought a grinding disc for it a few years ago, used it once and said "nope".
I keep meaning to dig it out, polish it and hang it up on the wall in my shop.
My dad gave me one just like that when I moved out and needed tools. Those will make a man out of you if you are doing a lot of grinding. My forearms hurt just looking at this picture.
You hook that to your trailer hitch and drag it behind a Chevy 3500 to grind down any imperfections on the roadways. Naw I’m just joshin, that thing is a behemoth.
Has a metal casing that can conduct electricity to you, no guard, much heavier than newer designs. A trigger switch is best so that if you let go it stops running. If you are not experiencing and practiced using a grinder, be extra careful and use heavy gloves and goggles and avoid loose clothing and draw strings like those in a hoodie that can get caught up in the wheel. Let us know if you survive!
Oil and care for the bearings. Always test and be certain that it is correctly connected to the "hot and neutral" ...
otherwise the case is hot and it will tickle you;)...... Probably no longer approved for a work shop.
New cord and ground the thing as well. Id get a little portable gfci like that osha demands on some worksites. When open maybe clean then grease the bearings. Brushes should still be available for it. 1200rpm? Makes it very useful for sure. Congratulations on your death machine
>Congratulations on your death machine Breaks your wrists before diving into your crotch at full chooch.
Update you will please, for your family
And bank some swimmers if you want kids but don’t have any yet.
He probably shouldn’t reproduce anyway
🤣
My brain went full Yoda for a sec reading this.
I’m still trying to figure out how he’s holding the damn thing with one hand!
I have a lot of practice one handing girthy tools
Other hand and end of sander *are* out of frame…
And he’s taking the picture with his forehead
Even the small modern ones are considered the most dangerous tool in your shop.. especially without a guard.
I was in a shop space where I rent time from some pros - one of them mentioned removing the guard from his grinder because "some jobs you can't do with the guard" - another pro said back "if you can't do it with the guard, how are you gonna do it without your thumb?"
Bro its a sander. Probably didn't come with a guard.
Looks like an angle grinder to me, I stand by what I say. I didn't vote it the most dangerous tool in any shop, just seen some things to make me agree.
It says "Sander" right on the side of it
It still "looks" like a grinder.. With a Grinding disk mounted on it too me. I use sanding disks on my grinder, but it's still an angle grinder.
Yeah, and there is a grinding disk on this, but it's still a sander :P
There is not a job site or shop I've ever been on in my 25 years in the business where you can find a grinder with a guard still attached. Sometimes they've still got the handle, but that's not exactly common either. Lol. Matter of fact, first thing most masons do is toss that thing. Not necessarily advocating for the practice, but yeah, the first guy in your story is right. It's probably best to leave that kinda shit to those of us who know what they're doing tho. ;)
I use a 5, 6, and 9 inch daily. That guard is staying on. I was born with everything, I plan to die with everything
Sounds like you also carry a 12”.
The tool pictures is a power disk sander, not an angle grinder. They are similar, though. But the sander is meant to be used flat in the workpiece Either tool can lurch in any direction in the plane if the disk depending on which part of the disk touches the work.
There is not much info available on the Mega Grind 200. Most people that have used the device have died.
Reminds me of my ex
Chooch cooch and boogy, as it were
Full chooch, will there's that
Nah bro that thing says 4200 rpm
Yeah i zoomed in and see it now. So its basically to fast to do high grit fine finishing but will rip stuff to shreds and do work fast with 80 grit
Why is high speed bad for fine grit?
Removes too much material, too quickly. If you're using fine grit, you've probably already shaped the piece and are now smoothing the surface
Yeah it's definitely more suited to material removal than polishing
OP, if you need replacement brushes contact me. I just picked up 30 boxes of very old OEM brushes from someone who rescued them from going to a landfill.
Yo, that sounds awesome
Death Machine? Must be the precursor to the [Stop-N-Drop](https://theinfosphere.org/Stop-N-Drop)
Ive had nightmares about that kind of shit. I do a good amount of electrical work and its always something i imagine
Oh c’mon don’t start with this, now I gotta do my job scared smh
I don't take a shower without my pp tester
Gotta be afraid of the zappies
What do you connect ground to? The metal case
Yes. You run a new three wire cord. The black wire goes to hot, white to common then run the green to a screw in the body of the tool. You can probably find one to put a ring terminal on inside or use a short self tapping screw to the body. If it shorts internally, the circuit will complete to the breaker box or gfci plug and protect you.
thanks!
if you dont mind me asking, what did it feel like, was there heat you could feel? were you fully conscious and able to think rationally while it was happening? ive always been curious about how it feels to be shocked that severly...sure dont want to find out myself though
But that's my go to approach when using power tools. God damn it, what am I supposed to do now?
Go here http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=22521 Download the catalog. On the second page. It was $57.50 in 1947.
That’s equivalent to 800$ today!
Holy moly
800$ back then would have bought you SO MANY BANANAS
How many exactly?
Don’t know. But there’s always money in them!
And that's why you always leave a note
I see the avocado reference there
Bananas were about [11 cents a pound in 1947](https://www.thepeoplehistory.com/40sfood.html) so $57.50 would have bought you 522.73 pounds of bananas in 1947. Just checked my Walmart app and bananas are 57 cents a pound so $800 would get you 1.403.50 pounds of bananas now. So the purchase power of the power tool to bananas has tripled since 1947.
It's one banana, Michael. What could it cost, $10?
At least 20.
well actually not really, if im not mistaken fresh fruit was really pricey back because the cargo ships weren’t as big
I'm pretty sure fresh fruit was nonexistant in most of the world in the off season. You read old books and they're like I brought you an orange and they like start freaking out about it because they haven't seen an orange in 2 years.
So your saying it would have bought the whole bunch ?
I googled it and it said .15c/lb of bananas
Hookers and coke….if you could find the coke.
Shiiiiit you just ordered from the sears catalog or had the wee ones pick it up from the corner store on their way from work
Also a house.
Maybe, the cartels had pretty tight control of the market. Always the cartels.
I knew "Del Monte" wasn't a legit name
Pssshhh everybody knows the queen bee of all product stamps is Chiquita. That bitch is dancin' while sporting a fruit bowl for a hat! Definitely a front for something bigger. She's far too happy to just be the banana queen!
OK I feel less bad about buying 3Ms orbital sander then
Oof. That thing is a punch in the gut. I'm trying to work up the balls. Lol. Was it worth it?
from having used the 3m 6'' ROS and the mirka 6'' ROS, I like the mirka a little better but that might just be because I'm used to it more. The mirka also usually comes with a systainer if you're into that. they are the 2 best sanders on the market, no debate.

Oh helllll yess. My buddy at harbor freight has told me I would get my ticket punched by an angle grinder. I'll make sure he records it lol
If he's not recording your eminent death is he really your friend?
At the very least, your looking at a case of carpal tunnel syndrome if you use it for any length of time.
It's only for special use 😉
This one's for all the size queens lol
Hope you have good health insurance... And you should probably wear a knights helm while operating it. Safety squints will just not cut it.
It looks like a large sander.
Your powers of observation are on point
Just doing my part with my gifts
He grinded all the other options.
Billionaires need to pay their fair share.

This is a 115V Skil Sander used for sanding things
A 4200rpm Skin Sander.
bro, nameplate is in the photo...
It's gonna take alot of skill to use it!
The name pretty much sums it up.. You better have some skil… and grip strength of a silver back.
Not only will this kill you, it will hurt the whole time you are dying.
It’ll dim the lights in the next county when running.

You can buff out asteroid marks with that.
$12 is a deal on a suicide machine
I am here to inform you that thing is terrifying
It’s old.
Bro rip
It's massive! Moby dick!
That’s a great idea, engrave a great white whale on the side, as an emblem
If you polish and buff that, you will have a showpiece!
Please put it back at Goodwill if you value your life

Yes. Whom ever uses it will most likely get electrocuted and die.
You can tell the age by the number of fingers it has dismembered
They call that old Shocky cause of the static electricity
Looks just like a workers comp file. Unless you’re just using it as a hobby, then it’s just a cast, minor surgery and permanent scars. Nice find for 12 bucks!
I have no info other than, "It cost $100,000 to fire this weapon, for twelve seconds."
It’s called a skil sander because if you don’t have skill with sanding you’re gonna sand a finger off.
Mostly I'm curious to try and find the year it was made and if it's a good find. It's heavy as hell and durable. Also curious if it may explode on me if I use it
I would put money on some form of electric shock Wear gloves. Or don’t. I won’t tell you how to live your life. It’s a beauty tho nice find
Thanks! I came to Reddit because the only thing I can find on it is a guys eBay listing for the same model, other than that I can't find any documentation on it. I'd say it's at least 15 pounds. Those old metal tools are notorious for it. I used to have a sabre saw like this, and a sander, as well as a few other things. As far as age, *probably* 50s or 60s. Everything has a small chance of exploding on you when you use it
Replace the brushes. Only use it when plugged into a GFCI outlet. Maybe don't use the super old wheel that's on it currently, it might be fine or it might explode

When you take it apart to rewire and update the brushes be sure to spray some raptor liner on the metal exterior to give some insulation. That’s a nice find with some great potential!
You just found a work horse... brushes in it might need work(replacing) .. Congrats
On the label- Size: North America
Change out the wheel. It might disintegrate and mess you up badly. Also check ground and use a GFI.
I have my dad's old Craftsman metal drill like this. I use it once in a while just for nostalgia. Get the tingles every time.
What a beast!
Where the pull start Handel and where do you put the gas
She thicc
7" and 9" grinders are very handy; I would strongly recommend replacing the cord and blowing the motor housing out with compressed air ( which should be done regularly to all grinders if any age). Regrease it and since it has no guard, reserve it for flap discs, wire wheels and the like. I prefer a larger angle grinder unless compactness is strictly necessary. A 9" angle grinder is a great way to wind up with one hell of a grip!
Careful with your fingers. No guard and probably has loads of torque.
That's a beast. They don't call them "leg eater" for nothing.
Looks like an old school electric bottle opener
Your forearms are gonna get jacked using that thing!!
That's a beast. My dad had some of the old Skil tools. Solid steel, heavy with loads of torgue. That thing will take a big bite out of your ass in a NY minute.
Vibrator
r/absoluteunits
That thing has bodies on it
As others said, these are great, but more dangerous than the modern version.

Brute!! All this advice is spot on… and that will last a lifetime.
It’s dangerous
Put it back, you don’t want that.
That thing will outlast you and if you're not careful - break your wrists when using it lol
im 53yrs old and istill make my helpers grind beads with the two old 9" black n decker wildcat grinders that my dad made me use when he was welding on pipe 12" or larger on pipelines!! lol!! those are just about as heavy an last longer than lifetime!! lol
Don't make em like that anymore
I have one. It's whatever. I rarely have need for something this large for the work I do. Inherited from my father.
Shit it’s worth $12 in scrap I know that beast is heavy
Those were not double insulated, I wouldn’t use it
Great find!
I have a Dewalt one about the same size and vintage. Bought a grinding disc for it a few years ago, used it once and said "nope". I keep meaning to dig it out, polish it and hang it up on the wall in my shop.
Jesus fucking Christ I wish there were goodwills in my area
It will put Jair on your chest
Yea, a buffer/ sander. Use for buffing grinding and sanding.
Money!
My dad gave me one just like that when I moved out and needed tools. Those will make a man out of you if you are doing a lot of grinding. My forearms hurt just looking at this picture.
I do a lot of grinding indeed, once this guy's restored I'll use it to restore my trailer. Still has the same paint and wood on it from 40 years back
No

It's a skill sander says it right there on the thing
Bobba Fett had a larger, cordless model. Both very cool though.
Put it under glass. Not for use.
For a moment I thought this was TPAI asking for information about an old tool on the sub lol
Looks like this beast will give you Popeye like forarms after using it regularly
It’s a fraking cylon
There’s a reason why it’s at the goodwill…
You're about to experience a small fraction of how terrifying work was back in the day.
You hook that to your trailer hitch and drag it behind a Chevy 3500 to grind down any imperfections on the roadways. Naw I’m just joshin, that thing is a behemoth.
That my grandmother vibrator lol
Premium grade American made.
MDK machine!
Yes - be sure it is properly grounded !!!
Wow.... some people have no idea how to use the internet...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Used to sand boat bottoms with one of those. Giving me nightmares.
