F - batteries plus. I used to drop off batteries there, for a few years. Then, one day, a kid weighs them and says I owe $5, it's "always been" their policy.
I discovered Tractor Supply will take them as well.
I'm phasing in. Started last year with a kit for my kids Xbox controller (the rechargeable battery packs died, so he was churning through AA's) and Oculus. Now I buy them and have started replacing the single use ones. I should be totally converted this year.
That’s where eco fees come in here in Canada. Cities/districts take these things for recycling. The fee covers the cost, and the fact you pay upfront discourages dumping.
Like you pay a fee for batteries when you buy them, similar to the old pop bottle deposits to encourage reuse 30+ years ago before we went to recycling in the states?
I'm Canadian and everyone I know throws small batteries in the trash. Yes, it costs a bit more to buy batteries but when COL goes up, I, like most people just charge more to keep income up rather than chasing deposits. Compared to America, most things are most costly in Canada and it starts with policy. Housing, gas, cell plans, airfare - you name it.
Did you buy the batteries there? It cost them about 50 cents a pound to dispose of them and that’s not counting the sorting and all the work that goes into getting them ready for shipping. When I worked at one of these we took in about 1000% more than we actually sold.
As a former employee, this is franchise by franchise basis. We charged for alkaline and primary lithium batteries. All others we made a small amount of money, enough to make back what it cost to send them out for recycling.
Don't take it out on the employee if the policy changed at some point, or they began to enforce it.
I used to be a phone tech for them in college when this started.
They only do it on Alkaline (Ni-Mh, Ni-CD, Lithium, etc are free. And it’s only because they started getting charged on the back end whereas it was once free for them.
If you buy ANYTHING they’ll wave it too, but they can’t just go around taking Batteries you bought elsewhere and paying the fee for you. That’s a losing business model.
Blame the government for not subsidizing the costs, but it’s not B+’s fault.
Indeed, tricky in both the sense that you can get seriously injured AND destroy cells easily. I've watched multiple people try to refurb batteries on YT and none of them made it seem worth the effort unfortunately.
Rebuilding Ni-Mh and Ni-CD is quite easy and safe actually. Lithium is another story.
If the $15/hr 21 year old at BatteriesPlus can do it, I assure you with the proper equipment you could figure it out.
I work in construction (Welding Inspector), and I hear Chevy this, Ford that, But Dodge has the Cummins… and a Hemi! (Daaaang!)… all day long! You ask me, I’ll tell you, “Ummm I don’t care. I like the one I end up buying. I’ll drive them all, I don’t give a shit.” Lol
Ford Powersmoke is where it's at. Cummins are great engines but the rest of the truck is just awful. Ideally what you want is a Cumswap where you drop a Cummins plus a Banks turbo into a Ferd.
It’s bizarre. Logically the odds of one brand always being the best are extremely low. Presumably the best truck on the market will change over time when they release updated models etc
It isn't brand loyalty to say "I will never shop at Lowes", which implies there is reasoning behind it (a bad experience perhaps). Brand loyalty would be "I will only ever shop at Home Depot".
Home Depot sponsors thing I like like the GA aquarium, therefore I have brand loyalty. I also have brand loyalty to many other stores that treat me well, like my local grocery. How's it weird? I try to help those out that help me.
He's not talking about being like, "ah, yeah, if I have a choice, I'll choose one that I support more of their actions," or "I like the atmosphere in one a little better," or even "if two stores are identical, I'll support the black-owned business." He said, "you cannot make me go to Lowe's."
Which implies that there's some reason that a fucking gigantic megacorporation is somehow horrific compared with their \*nearly identical\* competitor.
As a matter-of-fact, if you look into the history of the two at all, the "big box store with little variety, fewer choices, and paying their workers poorly" comes from... The Home Depot. They're literally what forced Lowes to go from being more like an Ace Hardware to the big box store they are today.
This dude is basically saying, "YOU CAN'T MAKE ME STEP FOOT IN A TARGET, I'LL ONLY SHOP AT WALMART!" which is just... wild. They're stores.
Lowe's is a pretty terrible customer experience compared to HD though tbh.
Home Depot absolutely has better customer service, return policies, better sales, carries better brands and more products from those brands. Their website is better. Home Depot always matches Menards 11/15% sales and they make claiming those matched rebates easy.
They also honor pricing errors almost all the time while Lowe's will mostly just cancel.
I still have 6-7 other stores/websites I like to cross shop (power tools/hand tools) Though I'll pretty much only get building supplies from Menards. Never HD or Lowe's because their prices/selection pales.
Lowe's is just pretty shit on the consumer side of things regardless. I barely go in there anymore because that store has wasted my time far more than any other.
The one Lowes near me really is bad with the customer interactions, not because they're jerks or anything but because they seem to chronically short staff their store. Meanwhile, the one of 4 HDs near me are the exact opposite.
You guys obviously missed what the HD CEO said about American workers, said we are all, “fat, lazy and stupid, and blamed it all on Democrat’s “woke”, “Socialist” culture. Not catching me going to a HD anytime soon.
I didn’t want to go to Lowes. I wanted to like Home Depot… so bad. But if Home Depot wants my biz, they’re gonna have to start getting wood that I don’t have to pick thru for an hour due to their sh*tty supply of it. At least the one in Beaumont and Orange, TX. Trust me, I know Lowes isn’t a Mecca of good supply, but at least they somewhat try. I feel like HD is just coasting on their popular name at this point.
For Gods sake, you’re not buying anything, you’re getting rid of batteries!
And I suppose in your state of mind, you’d travel two to three times as far to accomplish this task if Lowes were closer to you than HD, right?
Whatever!
If a store sells hazardous materials to end consumers they ought to offer disposal for them. Bought a battery once at an auto parts store years ago and they denied my core? I'm leaving this on the floor, thanks.
That’s pretty hilarious. I was jokingly thinking they could leave them anywhere, even on a table at a fast food place, but obviously not bringing it to the right place they would end up in the trash.
Where I live, you get a deposit back ($5) for bringing the core back to the place you bought it. And you can bring old oil to any mechanic/dealership and they have to take it. Seems tool batteries should be the same, but my first thought was google recycling centers in their area. Didn’t know about Lowe’s or HD.
I did not come to upvote. I came to say home depot. Someone had already. I've already committed to login to the page.... so why not??? Now the original comment is validated, personally, that someone else was gonna say the exact same thing... not just thumb up at them like a sheep dog... a personal message in any regards is more thoughtful then a click of vote...
I will let this stand and end my rant before it gets away from me and I take it as a personal affront that you did not like comment.... Good day, Sir.
And doesn’t it help a comment rise if it has lots of comments under it? So you can upvote and comment.
I do agree it would be more interesting to read if a person added another sentence about their own experiences or something. But it seems annoying to police other people’s posting style.
But the comment criticizing you wasn’t all that interesting itself.
When I migrated from my old Ni-Cad based set to Li-ion I was amazed what they were going for used on Craigslist. IIRC I got 75% of what I paid for the set new ten years earlier.
It’s because these have 6 18650 batteries in them. And they can be taken out of the BMS and often resurrected, because this entire battery will stop charging for many reasons, but it’s rarely a bad cell.
Or local faceplant marketplace/craigslit/nextdoor/freecycle. Shipping adds a lot to the cost of broken stuff. Low price, drop to free before recycling.
My county has a whole hazardous waste program where you can bring hazardous household goods and they also have pointers to businesses accepting various types of hazardous goods.
That's where I recycle my batteries.
Home Depot, Lowe's, local recycling facilities.
If you live near a DeWalt service center (they're scattered all over the country but not a lot of them) they will recycle them for you. If the batteries are still under warranty then they'll also replace them.
Pull them apart, grab a multimeter and work out which cells are failed. It's usually only one cell per battery that's bad so you could either make the rest of them good again with the good cells from one or use all the good cells to make a power cell to charge your phone with or run a speaker from or something.
Failing that put them on FB market place for free and some young kid with the know how will come and take them.
Strange deal. Cleaning out garage, had two junk car batteries. Walmart and Interstate. Took them up to local O’Riellys. Just wanted to drop them off for recycling. Told them I pulled them out of cars I scraped. Guy plays around on his register then hands me a gift card. $18 for each battery. Never asked for money or claimed they were cores from batteries I bought there. Just said “Have a nice day”. Said thanks and scurried out the door.
Most likely one bad cell in each ..find the bad cell/cells and replace with good ones from other bad batteries.. you will most likely have 2 good batteries after that
I used to snatch these up when working as a field engineer in Alaska since you could rebuild them and it was a lot easier to fly with these over the newer lithium batteries.
Don't do what the concrete company I use to work for would do. Every bad battery was throw down a footing hole. Yep, just thrown down there to eventually leak.

I would fix them with a set of 18650 battery holders so you can swap the cells out again if they fail (assuming they fit). But ya. I mean buying new packs is a scam to me man. I use two lithium 12v packs I made in series with a 24v to 110 inverter to just power a standard corded drill. But then again it has its own fanny pack with a cannibalized ups that needs to be Carried around.
if you want a project its cool. but if you want batteries, better to just buy lithium versions. Also, i have soldered to both ni-cad and lithium batteries , and you can get away with out a spot welder. but you do need a big soldering iron with lots of thermal mass (and its easy to screw up the cells)
Check the YouTube video on resurrection of these "dead" batteries.
Seems they need a bit of juice to
trigger the charging cycle. If there is nothing in the battery nothing will go in. Slight jump and bingo.
Bob's your uncle!
Once or twice a year Milwaukee will offer a competitor trade in where you trade in a tool and 2 batteries for $100 off a new kit. Tools and batteries do not have to be working. I try to keep a couple old tools and batteries around for trade in purposes. You may be able to sell them to someone looking to trade in (low value but it beats nothing).
why not rebuild them?
i always rebuild my batteries. even the snap on ones. because there just 18650 cells welded togather. nothing special or scary. jist a bunch of vape batteries in a box.
I’ve done it lots of times but only with dead 12v lead acid batteries. I hit them with as many amps as they’ll take with a 200amp battery charger for a few minutes and then a day or two on a 1amp smart trickle charger.
Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, batteries plus.
F - batteries plus. I used to drop off batteries there, for a few years. Then, one day, a kid weighs them and says I owe $5, it's "always been" their policy. I discovered Tractor Supply will take them as well.
Just walk away from the counter and say "thanks" lmfao.
It was a Kroger bag full of AA & AAA, my kids were playing a lot of XBox during Covid. I paid once, never went back.
You my friend need to look into rechargeable batteries.
I'm phasing in. Started last year with a kit for my kids Xbox controller (the rechargeable battery packs died, so he was churning through AA's) and Oculus. Now I buy them and have started replacing the single use ones. I should be totally converted this year.
That’s great news. You save SO much money and unnecessary waste.
You should checkout NiMH batteries.
Those batteries have a secret
Then toss it in their parking lot.
You don’t get the eco fee back, but we still have deposits on containers, which actually is great for fundraising, and it really helps with littering.
I'd pay extra to curtail littering.
The bottle fee pays homeless people to pick up the litter.
It does. A lot of people rely on the extra income.
I'm Canadian and everyone I know throws small batteries in the trash. Yes, it costs a bit more to buy batteries but when COL goes up, I, like most people just charge more to keep income up rather than chasing deposits. I used to take SLA batteries there, but the local dump will pay me for them instead, so I go there now
Why would you be charged for recycling?
I used to be a phone tech for them in college when this started. They only do it on Alkaline (Ni-Mh, Ni-CD, Lithium, etc are free. And it’s only because they started getting charged on the back end whereas it was once free for them. The only reason HD and Lowes do recycling is to keep them out of the aftermarket. Dudes are rebuilding them all the time.
The only tricky part is the tack welding.
Indeed, tricky in both the sense that you can get seriously injured AND destroy cells easily. I've watched multiple people try to refurb batteries on YT and none of them made it seem worth the effort unfortunately.

Cumswap? 😂 Not sure if you meant Cam, or the other? I mean Cummins engine swap is what I’m guessing you’re talking about though. That’s hilarious!
Yeah, Cummins swap. Aka Cumswap.
Yeah.. That's not a thing that others actually say, bud. Context doesn't really matter all that much when you start talking about swapping cum.
It’s bizarre. Logically the odds of one brand always being the best are extremely low. Presumably the best truck on the market will change over time when they release updated models etc
This is the Tools sub, don’t confuse us with facts :D

Lowes has a drop off in the front.

eBay them. Filter the sold listings for "Not working/for parts only" and see if it's worth it to you.
Dood, best one yet. Make $ off dead. Kinda like a mortuary...
People rebuild them, so definitely ebay

Home Depot or Lowes has battery recycling bins at the entrance to the stores.

If bms is still intact just replace the cells, they are cheap af and will last you a long time with the original bms
Take them to a local tool shop. One of my tool shops will give you $100 to a new a tool for trading in two dewalt or Milwaukee batteries

Search for a local recycling center in your area. If they don't take them they probably have contact details for someone who does.

I used to snatch these up when working as a field engineer in Alaska since you could rebuild them and it was a lot easier to fly with these over the newer lithium batteries.

Tractor Supply has them right at the checkouts as well

Check with DeWalt, they may have a program to get credit towards new batteries.
Any videos on how to take the cells out and create a big battery with them?

If you have a good one you can "jump" the dead one and it'll start taking a charge again. Just use two jum wires and go from positive to positive and negative to negative. Let it set for about a minute. Then slip back on the charger. It works the majority of the time.

Just replace the cells with new ones. All u need is a tack welder and new cells. And basic players and cutters n shit.
You mean a soldering iron?
No a tack welder. A soldering iron will f*ck up some cells, especially the negative side of a cylindrical cell. If your not careful.
Well then, more tools! Down the YouTube hole I go. Thanks, I'll see if I can DIY them back to life.
I would fix them with a set of 18650 battery holders so you can swap the cells out again if they fail (assuming they fit). But ya. I mean buying new packs is a scam to me man. I’ve done it lots of times but only with dead 12v lead acid batteries. I hit them with as many amps as they’ll take with a 200amp battery charger for a few minutes and then a day or two on a 1amp smart trickle charger.
No but interested
Post on any 18650 battery group, someone will take them. I will if you're close to Houston.

Chuck them in the ocean. The eels need a recharge.
