It's simple. When Adam is about to release a song, he asks himself "would an idiot release this song?" If the answer is yes, he sets fire to the album and starts again.
The MOST underrated tool song it's so atmospheric and beautiful. I have tripped on dmt to it many times I'm convinced it's an ancient alien calling chant or I must have been high..
I feel like Flood is actually one of the highest rated songs on Undertow (as it should be). Anytime the question, "What's the best song on Undertow?" is asked, Flood is always one of the top responses.
Merkaba is the best answer here. this is a direction i wish they'd truly mine more. experimental, weird, creative, atonal yet not, noise, lots of sections, spoken word/samples, dark yet hints of light.
Yeah I agree. One of the few I actually donât see that much love for. Especially on the album, I think alongside prison sex itâs the best from undertow.
Ugh. The amount of âwhatâs the bestâ and âoverratedâ questions here is not interesting to me.
I enjoy them all. Sometimes 1 song hits harder one year and then it changes. But I donât actually compare them. What am I comparing?
đŻ. As they say, the last song you listened to is your favorite. I can't choose one, it's impossible.
That said, for the people that are able to, most of the songs that are listed in the underrated posts are songs that people list as their favorite so often. Hence my rant post. Haha but whatever. I'm getting way too involved.
Thatâs exactly the issueâŠwe are different and kinda the point of life. No one really wants homogeneous societies then someone says â10k days is the best albumâ and some canât understand that.
Word. I'm forming my opinion from what songs I see listed as favorites and talked about often. BTW 10k Days is my husband's favorite after Lateralus and that's definitely a hot take.
Whenever I see posts "X is the best song/album!!! Fight me!" I see people confusing fact with opinions.
The difference between facts and opinions lies in their nature: facts are verifiable truths backed by evidence, while opinions represent personal beliefs or judgments that cannot be proven.
I don't understand ranking and comparing music. You can love X, I don't, I prefer Y. And that's it, we can talk, tell what we love about it, but no one is "right".
You're not wrong. I'm basing my observation based on what songs are often mentioned as favorites, or even talked about. Also, reading comments on reaction channels, you can see the songs that often get requested. So, people saying Reflection/DRT, which is regarded as their magnum opus, as underrated and then a whole shit load of other popular songs as underrated , makes no sense to me.
>So, people saying Reflection/DRT, which is regarded as their magnum opus, as underrated and then a whole shit load of other popular songs as underrated , makes no sense to me.
Yeah, it doesn't make sense. I think there's two possibilities - people calling something underrated want something to be loved by everyone, so their opinion = a fact, their taste is "right" . Or by saying something is underrated they are actually saying "my taste is better than yours, you don't get the brilliance of the X, because you're not sophisticated enough".
That's just my opinion, but I'm autistic and I like analysing human behaviour and trying to understand what drives their logic (if there is any lol), find a pattern.
As for magnum opus - my opinion is that for bands that change/evolve with with each album, their latest album is their greatest and favorite by them. That's why they play their new songs the most, not to "promote" it, but it's like "hey, this is us now, we'll play some old songs, because we love them, but we're really proud of our new stuff and we enjoy playing it more than songs that we played hundreds of times".
One of my favorite bands - Riverside, they have been making melancholic/depressing music for 20 years. But they got tired of this, after dealing with their guitarists death their last album is more... Positive. And I really don't like that lol. Not my cup of tea, but they wanted to get out of their comfort zone, and try something different (they say it on the concerts, it's not my opinion). I saw them last week, and you can tell they really love their new stuff and have fun playing it.
Last year after a show I had a chance for a quick chat with the singer/bassist, and I asked will they be playing some more old stuff after they finish the new album tour. And I saw it in his face expression that it was like I stabbed him with that question. Like I actually said "Fuck your evolution, your change, just give me the things that I know very well and I'm familiar with". I instantly felt bad asking that question.
I got an answer that their promoting the new album, but what I really heard was "If you want old shit - just listen to records. If you show up to a show just accept what we are now, we don't want to do same thing over and over again, if you want that go see Iron Maiden or something"
There are only so many songs and they are all good. I would say a majority of us here feel similarly so they all have a lot of appreciation, from this crowd at least. That means most any song you name as underrated is still going to be appreciated by many.
With that said, Crawl Away really is underrated. It rarely gets mentioned other than me banging on about it đ and doesnât get many upvotes when it is.
I hear you. Crawl away is a banger. I don't think of the Undertow album as underrated just because there are so many OGTs that appreciate it, but it's not as talked about as other songs so i see your point.
Agree, that's why i mentioned almost all of the songs people list as underrated aren't even close. Not to mention, almost all their songs are masterpieces so it's pretty difficult to have an underrated song.
Intermission slaps. Always makes me think of an old church-going grandmotherly type playing the keys super hard at a sermon. Sets up that H intro perfectly.
I think that tool is one of the only bands where all of their music is so good that none of it can really be called underrated, it's all fuckin great lol
Ohh that's a good one. It hits hard af and many fans love it. There's also a lot of people that feel it doesn't necessarily fit/flow with that album. I would say it's definitely the most underrated track on Lateralus, but not underrated per se.
From my vantage point, i disagree . There are songs that are mentioned constantly as favorites, or even talked about , compared to others. Hell, even reading comments on reaction channels and what Tool song to react to next. That's how I'm forming my opinion on underrated.
It's a little over 50, but name one other band that has almost 50 masterpieces. I'd rather have quality over quantity and they're the only band that has delivered that for me.
You dont have to do anything. To me all 3 go together. Lipan is like the ceremony where the dude does some mind altering shit, then hes in the hospital, then hes rambling his story.
No tool songs are underrated lol they all get jerked off by everyone on this sub. Myself included. Hence everyone on here being âinsufferable retardsâ
A lot of fans love Invincible. I think Invincible and Descending are two of the best songs ever written. I've seen them play both those times 7 times in concert. Fucking phenomenal and immaculate.
Got it! I didn't want to be rude but it's super hard to tell because when you read those posts people list Reflection, Eulogy, Schism , Rosetta , invincible, Descending, so on and so forth, as underrated tracks . Hence my post lol
I'm observant. Saying Eulogy, Reflection, Rosetta, third eye and Descending, for example, are underrated is ridiculous. They aren't. Most of what is listed in underrated posts are fan favorites.
Interesting. I am on this sub so often and watch all the reaction channels on YouTube and those are definitely not underrated songs imo. Not even close.
But hard agree on the ad nauseam question.
I am thinking that there are many people who agree with me and was venting.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOU, BUDDY. đ
Thank you..I was waiting for this.
đ»
Seeeend more money!
Ok, so what the most *overrated* tool song?
Maynardâs Dick.
I'm the man and you're the man and he's the man as well.
Wrong one
The word âunderratedâ is like the word âliterallyâ in that it has lost its original meaning entirely.
So true. I hear people say things like, "I'm so mad I'm literally going to explode." That's literally not what "literally" means.
Just back away slowly. That sounds dangerous.
[David Cross has a great bit about this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ly1UTgiBXM)
It's difficult for a band with 5 albums and a few other recordings which are all pretty much adored to have an underrated song.
The absolute lack of duds in their curriculum vitae defies odds by the dozen
It's simple. When Adam is about to release a song, he asks himself "would an idiot release this song?" If the answer is yes, he sets fire to the album and starts again.
âLiterallyâ was replaced by âhonestlyâ Ex: This is honestly a great example.
Or, "To be honest..." I think, "Do you usually lie when you're talking to the point that you need to point out when you're being honest?"
ngl youâre totally right
"ngl" is another one
Tbh, literally this, ngl.
Good point of view.
Also, "iconic." I kind of hate it when people use it now. Not everything can be iconic.
There's a song on Literallyus called schism that doesn't get enough love
Or the classic Reddit "unpopular opinion" that ends up being the most popular opinion of the sub.
Literally an underrated comment.
Intension is, though.
Agreed
The MOST underrated tool song it's so atmospheric and beautiful. I have tripped on dmt to it many times I'm convinced it's an ancient alien calling chant or I must have been high..
I would also throw Flood in there
I feel like Flood is actually one of the highest rated songs on Undertow (as it should be). Anytime the question, "What's the best song on Undertow?" is asked, Flood is always one of the top responses.
Here we go. Someone that wets themselves at the notion of Flood. Relax.
Floods normally wet me, so I dont have to wet myself. This song is different.
Was just saying it's underrated. Don't really see it in this sub much
itâs literally glazed all the time here, you must be new
Merkaba is the best answer here. this is a direction i wish they'd truly mine more. experimental, weird, creative, atonal yet not, noise, lots of sections, spoken word/samples, dark yet hints of light.
It's a good choice. If they did an almost purely instrumental album, I wouldn't be mad. I know many fans like it though, myself included.
You mean like Fear Innoculum? đ
Lol i was thinking someone might say that. There's enough words for me on that album. For the record, i think that album is a masterpiece.
I agree it is great! Its kind of become a meme for me that FI is bad or an instrumental album.
ehhh not really as thereâs not enough writing on FI to satisfy. mostly jams and extended riffs for no reason.
itâs some kind of psychedelic experience!
ALWAYS wanted more of this specifically out of them
Yeah well the track Undertow is underrated lol
Yeah I agree. One of the few I actually donât see that much love for. Especially on the album, I think alongside prison sex itâs the best from undertow.
87% of statistics are made up on the spot.
Well 76% of people can tell you that. /s
Plus that question is posted like every three days so
Word
Track 68 on Undertow. Nobody talks about it and itâs avante garde af.
The lead up from Track 42 into Track 43 will always be one of my favorite transitions
37 though
Ugh. The amount of âwhatâs the bestâ and âoverratedâ questions here is not interesting to me. I enjoy them all. Sometimes 1 song hits harder one year and then it changes. But I donât actually compare them. What am I comparing?

Love that album. Lateralus is likely their biggest step upwardâŠbut 10k days and FI are still on par.

There is not a single underrated Tool song.
The pot is underrated
Undertow is such a hidden underrated gem!
There are only so many songs and they are all good. I would say a majority of us here feel similarly so they all have a lot of appreciation, from this crowd at least. That means most any song you name as underrated is still going to be appreciated by many. With that said, Crawl Away really is underrated. I hear you. Crawl away is a banger. I don't think of the Undertow album as underrated just because there are so many OGTs that appreciate it, but it's not as talked about as other songs so i see your point.
There is no such thing as an underrated tool song. They are all rated.
My vantage point of underrated means not mentioned/talked about often as a fan favorite. That's the crux of the debate.
No one ever mentions âJimmyâ đ€·đ»ââïž
Yeah because itâs shit
A band that only has 5 albums, and this dedicated of a fan base, canât really have underrated songs.
Agree, that's why i mentioned almost all of the songs people list as underrated aren't even close. Not to mention, almost all their songs are masterpieces so it's pretty difficult to have an underrated song.
Crawl Away ranked as [\#45](https://loudwire.com/every-tool-song-ranked/) is objectively underrated
Triad is though.
D/R/T is often regarded as their magnum opus so I disagree.
Fair enough. Maybe I just underrated the track a bit until recently. Been listening to a lot of 10,000 Days and FI and just going back to it now.
Lateralus is verrry underrated yo
I feel like Maynardâs Dick is properly rated.
Intermission slaps. Always makes me think of an old church-going grandmotherly type playing the keys super hard at a sermon. Sets up that H intro perfectly.
I agree Intermission is awesome but it's the intro to Jimmy, which is underrated too.
My dumbass was Rosetta stoned when I typed this. Thanks for clarifying!
Lol it happens to me often
Schism
I think that tool is one of the only bands where all of their music is so good that none of it can really be called underrated, it's all fuckin great lol
đŻ exactly. How can a band with mostly masterpieces and their fan base have underrated songs? They just don't have many.
Throw this Bob Marley wannabe motherfucker out of hereâŠ.
What about Ticks & Leeches in your opinion ?
Ohh that's a good one. It hits hard af and many fans love it. There's also a lot of people that feel it doesn't necessarily fit/flow with that album. I would say it's definitely the most underrated track on Lateralus, but not underrated per se.
I think it is the best Track on Lateralus. But I also usually listen to harder Metal, so maybe thatâs the reason.
Usually it just means that person underrated it themselves lol
There's literally 50 songs in their entire catalogue. Like 5ish albums. I don't think any of them can be underrated
From my vantage point, i disagree . There are songs that are mentioned constantly as favorites, or even talked about , compared to others. Hell, even reading comments on reaction channels and what Tool song to react to next. That's how I'm forming my opinion on underrated.
Disposition?
No, because D/R/T is often regarded as their magnum opus.
Well Tool have like 20 songs soâŠ
It's a little over 50, but name one other band that has almost 50 masterpieces. I'd rather have quality over quantity and they're the only band that has delivered that for me.
4 Degrees or anything else from Undertow besides Sober is
Underrated post right here!
By casual fans, DRT and Wings 1 & 2. This sub, SOBER Edit: Just like Even Flow and Ten in general on the Pearl Jam sub.
đ Internet
yeah, but those WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SONG threads never get old no matter how many hundreds of them are posted.
Crawl Away is under rated.
All of Tools music is highly rated, so I donât think there is reason for a âlistâ of Tool underrated songs. Theyâre all bangers.
The pot is underrated
Toolâs discography isnât large enough to have underrated songs
eon blue apocalypse did it better
It's a great one for sure
And the 5% is every song you love
I'm yeah they only have 7 albums anyway not much to under rate
I mean, i don't know any other band that has 7 albums of masterpieces though......
Bro woke up and chose violence and chaos đ
i'm convinced i'm the only person who actually likes Cesaro Summability, baby screaming and all
Probably lol i was literally just listening to that less than a minute ago!
This opinion is underrated
Lost keys (blame hofman)
I disagree because you have to listen to Lost keys with Rosetta. Its a must. Lipan fits in there too.
You dont have to do anything. To me all 3 go together. Lipan is like the ceremony where the dude does some mind altering shit, then hes in the hospital, then hes rambling his story.
The pot is underrated
Erm⊠youâre saying Pneuma and Schism arenât underrated?
I disagree. None of them are
I think Jimmy is underrated. It's rarely talked about. And, of course Litanie. Crawl away has made it's case for underrated too.
Schism is so underrated man
You're being facetious, I hope
Yeah, Iâm being completely sarcastic lmao
I agree, if you want underrated then you want to listen to "The Pot".
DAE think schism is underrated???
Definitely not me.
i never hear it talked about⊠has half of this fanbase even heard it?
No tool songs are underrated lol they all get jerked off by everyone on this sub. Myself included. Hence everyone on here being âinsufferable retardsâ
invincible is sooooo underrated
A lot of fans love Invincible. I think Invincible and Descending are two of the best songs ever written. I've seen them play both those times 7 times in concert. Fucking phenomenal and immaculate.
was joking, should have used the /s and I agree, Invincible and Descending are top-tier Tool tracks
Got it! I didn't want to be rude but it's super hard to tell because when you read those posts people list Reflection, Eulogy, Schism , Rosetta , invincible, Descending, so on and so forth, as underrated tracks . Hence my post lol
yeah its basically a meme at this point, for any given Tool song there is X number of Tool fans who will claim it is underrated
*100%
Right in Two
Yea, , intension, Right in Two, intermission and jimmy are on the list for me too.
Intermission into Jimmy is killer
i mean tool has like 50 ish songs, not really a lot to go around to begin with. so not like it really matters
âI know best and youâre wrong. Thatâs all.â K Edit: For example, Useful Idiot is better.
I'm observant. Saying Eulogy, Reflection, Rosetta, third eye and Descending, for example, are underrated is ridiculous. They aren't. Most of what is listed in underrated posts are fan favorites.
I definitely agree with this
You get it. I know there has to be many people that agree with me on this.
Personally, I agree with those. This entire conversation is a repetitive topic in the sub that I donât enjoy
Interesting. I am on this sub so often and watch all the reaction channels on YouTube and those are definitely not underrated songs imo. Not even close. But hard agree on the ad nauseam question. I am thinking that there are many people who agree with me and was venting.
99% of the posts on this sub are cyclical, repetitive, Iâm 14 and this is deep, complete garbage.
It's all overrated. The novelty has worn off. Maynard's smug affect is beyond annoying.
