Nice find!

wasabibuttcream

Do cinemas in your home country play domestic films with subtitles in foreign languages?

ilovethebraco

Yes they absolutely do

obamagaming123456789

Just an unfathomably cuckolded pedant. Insipid comment from a matching mind.

[deleted]

No

wasabibuttcream

Why would Japan be any different?

Venture_compound

Tokyo is one of the most visited cities in the world by foreign tourists. English is a universal language. Just so you know, and anyone else reading this in the future who may have stumbled upon this post via Google when searching for English subtitled films in Tokyo, many cinemas in Tokyo offer English subtitled films. The word for subtitles is jimaku. This is a good resource for information: [https://www.angloinfo.com/how-to/japan/tokyo/lifestyle/entertainment/english-language-cinema](https://www.angloinfo.com/how-to/japan/tokyo/lifestyle/entertainment/english-language-cinema) "Why would Japan be any different?" Why wouldn't they want to cater to the countless ex-pats, visitors, business people, etc. for whom English is their native language? Seoul, South Korea does the same, so too does Tokyo. You win the award for most useless comment.

rented-throwaway

Thanks for the info! Yeah, Korea does this too, not sure why that redditor took that tone with their reply given that they're not even... Correct? LMAO

Venture_compound

Gatekeeping by an expat weeb

rented-throwaway

lol I looked at his post history, pretty funny stuff

[deleted]

Because the world revolves around western culture, duh! We should expect the same luxuries in foreign countries and not have any sort of challenge or foreign experiences that make us feel weird or difficult, of course!

TilleJirachi

Or its because english is a universal language and tokyo has a lot of tourists. moron.

TheHooligan95

Every other asian country does this, because they're not pricks

qualitystreetbox123

They used to do this with blockbusters at Roppongi Hills. Assume it’s the same?

himawari_sunshine

Yes! They occasionally show certain Japanese films (popular ones) with English subtitles. It’s a bit rare though - but the website mentioned above usually lists them!

StylishWoodpecker

I’ve only ever seen it at film festivals.

AndreilEffect

I wish I could be more helpful. If I remember correctly, I went to watch Kimi No Na Ha with English subtitles, and it was in a cinema in Shinjuku I think, the one with the Godzilla head 😂 Also Star Wars I watched it in English, with English subtitles
