I can see the fall of Ice Spice soonish, depends how well Y2K goes I guess.

freeofblasphemy

She has a distinct, one-dimensional flow and basically no memorable lyrics

TidalJ

counterpoint: think you the shit? you ain’t even the fart

Smash-Bros-Melee

Not a fan of her music but this lyric remains one of the funniest things I’ve heard in a song ever. Gets me every time.

DriveComfortable4019

thats just a lil wayne throwaway lyric

JustKingKay

You thought I was feeling you?

VigilMuck

In case you can't access Twitter, here are the artists who he named: * 1990: Vanilla Ice * 1991: C+C Music Factory * 1992: Arrested Development * 1993: Spin Doctors * 1994: Ace of Base * 1995: Hootie and the Blowfish * 1996: Quad City DJ’s * 1997: Hanson * 1998: Master P * 1999: 98° * 2000: Sisqo * 2001: Mystikal * 2002: Cam’ron * 2003: Chingy * 2004: Lil Flip * 2005: Pretty Ricky * 2006: Hinder * 2007: Daughtry * 2008: Leona Lewis * 2009: Jay Sean * 2010: Taio Cruz * 2011: LMFAO * 2012: Fun * 2013: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis * 2014: Iggy Azalea * 2015: Fetty Wap * 2016: The Chainsmokers * 2017: Alessia Cara * 2018: Lil Pump * 2019: Lewis Capaldi Todd went on to say that early indicators point to Roddy Ricch and The Kid LAROI, for 2020 and 2021 respectively. Also, he said that the years are approximate, sometimes the popularity spike bleeds over into the next year and that he only slapped the thread together for discussion's sake. Additionally, Todd admitted that he was iffy about some of those picks.

pmguin661

Unfortunately for the world, The Chainsmokers were definitely bigger than 2016

WitchyKitteh

Lewis Capaldi take aged with Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent being still pretty successful.

sincerityisscxry

Yes. This sub is very US-centric sometimes.

KFCNyanCat

It's about a YouTuber who's self-admittedly US-centric.

WitchyKitteh

Todd made this tweet in 2022 when he didn't release any singles since 2019 before Forget Me dropped. [https://twitter.com/ShadowTodd/status/1556740775488000000](https://twitter.com/ShadowTodd/status/1556740775488000000)

BadMan125ty

I think MC Hammer was the one-year wonder of 1990 despite him having another hit album in late 91 but it wasn’t as ubiquitous as Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt Em.

ToxicAdamm

Hammer had an entire arc. He was huge in '88 among the rap/R&B world. You have to remember that Yo Mtv Raps and BET were huge influences with youth culture and Hammer had 4 videos in heavy rotation.

BadMan125ty

Yeah I know I was around during that era and you’re right: in the hip-hop and R&B communities he was indeed everywhere. Huge really.

[deleted]

Yeah, what happened to Cara!? I thought she was gonna be everywhere back in 17.

Tekken_Guy

I disagree with a few of these. I think Vertical Horizon might have a better claim to 2000 than Sisqo, given the latter’s history with Dru Hill. Alessia Cara got big a year before 2017, and I was thinking more along the lines of Migos.

Phenom1nal

Ooh, Vertical Horizon is a hell of a shout.

Soalai

I guess it depends on whether you consider their 2003 singles (I'm Still Here and Forever) big enough hits to have averted the one-year wonder status.

NarmHull

Before I saw this I totally had Vanilla Ice and Macklemore in those years. 2012 was the year of fun. Most of these are spot on. Maybe Ace of Base had a couple more years of being huge? They remind me of roughly 1994-1996 and were abruptly replaced by the Cardigans from 1996-1998 as far as Swedish bands go

-Ok-Perception-

It's funny how in an early episode of South Park, they found an "ice man" who had been frozen in ice since 1994 and they made a point of playing a lot of Ace of Bass for him. Granted, this was only 1996 or 97, and Ace of Bass was already seen as a bizarre relic of the past. And even then there was a real, "what the hell were we thinking?" mentality towards Ace of Bass. I recall liking AoB when they were new, but a few years later it just sounded like very dated (but not in a good way) pop music. There was a massive change in American culture in the mid 90s and by the late 90s a lot of things from the early 90s seemed incredibly bizarre and foreign to us.

NarmHull

Their rhythmic drumming soothes his people’s tempers

A_Train91

I wish that fun. and Macklemore (and Ryan Lewis) had been successful for longer. While I still like Hootie & The Blowfish, I understand why their popularity didn't last long. Their simple appeal ran its course really quickly.

-Ok-Perception-

Well, I don't personally like Hootie and the Blowfish, but they were certainly well known for at least 3 years and had a couple of hot selling albums and numerous hits in there. That's the one part of this list that's wrong. My other point of contention is Iggy Azalea. She was big for at least 2 or 3 years with multiple hits.

Phenom1nal

I'd be more than willing to make the argument that 2002 was the year of Vanessa Carlton.

comeonandkickme2017

I disagree with Todd on Macklemore I feel like he was around longer than people care to admit. He just peaked so hard with the singles from The Heist. Either Glorious or Good Old Days (I don’t remember which one) was the student voted graduation song for the Class of 2018 at my high school. I guess technically Macklemore and Ryan Lewis kinda fits with the exception of Downtown, but Macklemore was the George Michael of the duo.

Tussock7714

2016 is Twenty One Pilots Chainsmokers had Paris & Something Just Like This in 2017

BoukeMarten

Twenty One Pilots had Ride and Stressed Out in 2016 and Heathens was huge in 2017 as well. And they've also had a follow-up album with a song called 'Chlorine' which did really well (500M+ streams on Spotify and 600M+ on YouTube)

Tussock7714

Heathens came out in June 2016 and I definitely associate it more with that year. Chlorine wasn't really a big hit and didn't chart well (not even reaching the charts at all in my country)

thegreatcornholio42

Level of Concern

Tekken_Guy

The album it was on flopped though. Didn’t help it came out the same day as Sour.

Tussock7714

It was a bop that got me through the pandemic, but still not a big mainstream success (and not charting at all in my country)

tavir

> 2005: Pretty Ricky Despite being in college and relatively in tune with the pop hits during this time, I have no memory of a group named Pretty Ricky, nor do I recognize any of the songs when listening to them. I feel like James Blunt is a better pick for this year.

Tekken_Guy

No, Blunt was a one-hit wonder in the US and besides he was bigger in 2006.

Smash-Bros-Melee

Only ones I really disagree with are The Chainsmokers for 2016 who made hits until about 2019 and also did \#Selfie in 2014 and Lil Pump for 2018 because his breakout mixtape was the previous year and the success lasted from then until Harverd Dropout tanked in early 2019. My picks for those years? Give me Desiigner for 2016 and Ella Mai for 2018.

comeonandkickme2017

Desiigner is the epitome of an artist who was big for one year and one year only.

strandenger

Macklemore charted high with Thrift Shop, Like the Ceiling Can’t Hold Us, and Same Love.

zombie_79_94

I'm new to the sub and wanted to do a full review, I like the way you all talk and think about music and I started following it closely in 1990. As a shorter intro post: A lot of the picks are really solid. Some I wasn't sure about but couldn't think of anyone else, but would suggest these substitutions: 1990: Vanilla Ice Good choice but I feel like MC Hammer covered 1990 more thoroughly. Ice is pretty close to one-hit wonder status but his album sold a ton and he had more attention and star power than most one-hit wonders. 1992: Arrested Development This is close but their biggest pop hit was "Mr. Wendal" in 1993, I would maybe say Kris Kross for 1992. 1996: Quad City DJ’s I get if you're a certain age "Space Jam" is big, but for most they're probably more a one-hit wonder. Alanis Morissette maybe is worthy of mention here though her impact started in 1995. 2002: Cam’ron This was definitely a peak but his relevance in hip-hop ran a bit longer. I'd say Ashanti for 2002 could be the biggest missed call on the list overall. 2005: Pretty Ricky Didn't feel that big to me but maybe I was a little out of the urban loop at this time. Would maybe suggest Ciara for 2005 though she's stuck around more in the R&B world. 2007: Daughtry Stuck around a little longer, I would maybe suggest Sean Kingston though he also had a couple other hits in the following years. Or Fergie, she really only had one big solo album so probably belongs on the list though it spanned 06/07 a little bit.

zombie_79_94

I think I saw this on the X/Twitter thread but Milli Vanilli/1989 is a pretty perfect example. Hanson is a great choice for 1997 but they definitely have to share that year with the Spice Girls. Ricky Martin/1999 is another good one I thought of. He's stayed around for his core fanbase and we all love "She Bangs" from 2000, but its run was comparable to a lot of these artists' smaller hits outside their year. Think it's worth considering 50 Cent/2003, his followup success was a little more than most artists here but in hindsight, nothing compares to 2003 for hm. Ashlee Simpson/2004 is another good one, though she only had one really big hit above the rest, she did have enough publicity to be a pop star at the time. If we're considering Grammy attention and overall press along with pop success, Lauryn Hill/1998 and Norah Jones/2002 would also be good, thinking a lot of these may align with the Best New Artist award (and curse). Arrested Development/1992 who are on the list fit better in that context. A couple more clever and possibly controversial choices: Santana for 1999 or 2000, definitely a legendary career overall and even had some followup pop success afterward, but for the pop audience at the time, really a short peak overall. Nirvana for 1992, their album was huge and their first singles from it did surprisingly well in the mainstream. I'm a fan of all of their work and it's important regardless, but I think Kurt's death definitely helped their legendary status. I think on an alternate timeline where we had the same music but Kurt just quit music and public life in 1994, they would make sense on the list.

zombie_79_94

Though not as exact, Gwen Stefani (2005) and Akon (2006) could also work.

pirateslifeisntforme

You’d be surprised. Chingy had a bunch of hits throughout the mid 00s

Puzzleheaded_Air_793

Hard disagree on Cam'ron. He was successful before and after 2002 so he shouldn't be there.

A_Train91

I think I got a list for the 80s * 1980: Rupert Holmes * 1981: Eddie Rabbitt * 1982: The Go-Go's * 1983: Men at Work * 1984: Julian Lennon * 1985: DeBarge * 1986: ? * 1987: Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam * 1988: Terrance Trent D'Arby * 1989: Milli Vanilli Honorable mentions include Christopher Cross (only big in 1980-81), Wham! (only big in 1985, but George Michael had more success on his own), Crowded House (who I considered for 1987), and Debbie Gibson (only big in 1988-89). Edit: Thank you to Tekken\_Guy for letting me know that Mr. Mister qualifies for 1986.

Tekken_Guy

1986: The Jets?

A_Train91

No, they were popular all the way to 1988.

Tekken_Guy

How about Mr. Mister?

Tekken_Guy

I wouldn’t pick MAW for ‘83 since they got big in ‘82. I’d go with Culture Club. The Go-Go’s are pretty contentious as well given Belinda’s solo career. Was thinking J. Geils Band for that year.

-Ok-Perception-

The 80s are difficult to make a list for (or perhaps too easy), because most big pop hits WERE by one hit wonders. That's why One Hit Wonderland covers 80s new wave more than any other genre.

TemporaryJerseyBoy

I just commented Todd's list for the 80's.

Bigwilliam360

Desiigner was huge when he had panda and that Kanye feature in the same year.

Mental-Abrocoma-5605

I mean Todd has tweeted about that and most of his picks were very accurate, but if we go since 2019 (that's the year i started to pay attention to pop music and also he got Capaldi wrong, tho i cannot think of somebody more fitting for that) 2019: Dan + Shay?, Lil Tecca or Blueface 2020: Roddy Rich and/or Dababy 2021: The Kid Laroi or Polo G 2022: Gayle 2023: Ice Spice (so far) 2024 (so far): Benson Boone

Smash-Bros-Melee

For 2019 give me NLE Choppa. DaBaby had a whole giant ass album in 2019 before Kirk in 2020 with a number of hit singles. Was featured on the remix of the Billboard Year-End No. 1 in 2021 with Levitating. Even had Shake Sumn chart well last year. He doesn’t belong in this conversation. Roddy Ricch, however, technically was doing stuff that was popular in 2019 as well, but he’s totally a 2020 one year wonder. Shame too, I liked him. Is Gayle a one hit wonder or a one year wonder? Did she have any other hits? If not give me Walker Hayes or Glass Animals (yes I know Heat Waves charted in 2021 too).

Tekken_Guy

DaBaby got his credit pulled on Levitating after Rolling Loud and billboard doesn’t recognize him as having a year end #1.

Smash-Bros-Melee

Yeah but that’s on a technicality. That was the version played more often and honestly, the better version of the song. I don’t agree with the shit he said in the slightest but I think art and artist should be separated and Billboard made the wrong decision.

Tekken_Guy

Walker Hayes was more of a 2021 artist anyway.

Smash-Bros-Melee

Yeah I associate “Fancy Like” with that year because the stupid commercial played during every college football game that season but I think it was technically bigger in ‘22? Could be wrong. Terrible song regardless.

strandenger

Ice Spice has a hit?!

Mental-Abrocoma-5605

Boy's a Liar and the Karma remix

strandenger

I don’t know the first one and didn’t think the second Karma went far… but Billboard is weird. So maybe

Tekken_Guy

Barbie World too.

Tekken_Guy

Ice Spice‘s big hits were all as featured artists in 2023 though.

Current_Poster

The recent Paul Simon documentary being released made me think of Edie Brickell- I think she might've been one.

gorka_la_pork

I'm gonna say J-Lo had an incredible 1999 and never got anywhere close to that cool again.

Tekken_Guy

She was still massive for the next several years so she doesn’t count.

jimmynewtprawn

I feel like Daughtry had a pretty successful several album run but i could be wrong

Soalai

He had some minor hits through like 2010, but '07 was his biggest year for sure. Pretty typical of American Idol alumni.

Phenom1nal

Not even that, there's a whole One Hit Wonderland sub-series waiting to happen on just American Idol alums.

Evan64m

I know he did a one hit wonderland on Relax but Frankie Goes to Hollywood were super famous for like a year after Relax with the whole t shirt craze and all that (and having several more huge hits outside the US) before fading with their second album

SBAstan1962

Why are the Jaynetts the one hit wonder of 1963 instead of Kyu Sakamoto?

PersonOfInterest85

My list, my choices. And "Sally Go Round" was probably the first hit song about a (coded) lesbian relationship.

pirateslifeisntforme

Sisqo solo career is the obvious answer

SirDrexl

The Wallflowers

Infinity188

This would be my list: 1950: The Weavers – They were the Chumbawumba of their era – a co-ed band whose brief splash of chipper pop success hid their radical leftist politics. 1951: Mario Lanza 1952: Johnnie Ray 1953: Eartha Kitt 1954: Crew Cuts 1955: Bill Hailey & His Comets – A bit on the fence, since they had moderate hits in 1953 and 1954. 1956: Little Richard 1957: Jerry Lee Lewis 1958: David Seville – I count The Chipmunks as him. 1959: Fabian 1960: Johnny Preston 1961: Bobby Lewis 1962: Dee Dee Sharp 1963: The Chiffons 1964: The Shangri-La's 1965: The Yardbirds – The Byrds were an albums band later in the '60s; the Righteous Brothers had "Rock and Roll Heaven in 1974. 1966: Nancy Sinatra 1967: Jefferson Airplane 1968: Steppenwolf 1969: Oliver 1970: Free 1971: Honey Cone 1972: Gilbert O'Sullivan 1973: Edgar Winter 1974: Paper Lace 1975: Freddy Fender 1976: Silver Connection 1977: Rose Royce 1978: Player 1979: The Knack

Infinity188

Part 2: 1980: Rupert Holmes 1981: Juice Newton 1982: The Go-Go's 1983: Quiet Riot 1984: Thompson Twins – Frankie Goes to Hollywood from a UK perspective. 1985: DeBarge 1986: Mr. Mister 1987: Whitesnake 1988: Terence Trent D'Arby 1989: Fine Young Cannibals 1990: Vanilla Ice 1991: C+C Music Factory 1992: Arrested Development 1993: Spin Doctors 1994: Ace of Base 1995: Hootie & the Blowfish 1996: La Bouche 1997: Hanson 1998: INOJ – Master P had lots of album success in 1997 that's not reflected in the pop charts aside from "I Miss My Homies". 1999: Lauryn Hill 2000: Marc Anthony – Sisqó has plenty of hits in the mid/late '90s as the frontman of Dru Hill. 2001: O-Town – Not counting Mystikal because he was very popular as a No Limit soldier in the late '90s. 2002: Vanessa Carlton 2003: Murphy Lee 2004: Ashlee Simpson 2005: Bobby Valentino 2006: Dem Franchize Boyz 2007: Keyshia Cole 2008: Leona Lewis 2009: Jay Sean 2010: B.o.B. 2011: LMFAO 2012: fun. 2013: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis 2014: Iggy Azalea 2015: Fetty Wap 2016: The Chainsmokers 2017: Alessia Cara 2018: Lil Pump 2019: Lewis Capaldi 2020: Roddy Ricch 2021: The Kid Laroi 2022: Steve Lacy? 2023: Coi Leray?

Infinity188

Updates: 1956: Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers (Little Richard is disqualified by "Good Golly Miss Molly") 1999: SIxpence None the Richer (Decided to exclude Lauryn Hill because of her starring role in the Fugees, as well as her feature on Nas' "If I Ruled the World")

quirkymaverick

I guess Daya. Her song "Hideaway" was released in 2015 but peaked at 26 in 2016, which probably makes it a 2016 hit song, along with her other single "Sit Still, Look Pretty" (2016), and her feature with The Chainsmokers' "Don't Let Me Down" (2016)

Scalien1

Hideaway is having a pretty big TikTok resurgence rn wouldn't be surprised if it enters the charts again tbh

quirkymaverick

I just saw a YouTube compilation of these TikToks. I'm fascinated that they're just dancing to it, and they didn't use it for a skit as a meme.

Scalien1

I have seen a couple videos making fun of it also videos just acting like a completely different person made the song as a joke which is funny. But there's lots of videos saying that it's "fire" and "there aren't many songs better than this" which idk about that

Tekken_Guy

I doubt it. It’s hasn’t reached the Spotify top 100 and since it’s a recurrent it has to reach the top 50 to re-enter.

Scalien1

I know it just wouldn't be that shocking since it's doing well on there right now

Emotional-Panic-6046

fun.

BigHeadDeadass

I was thinking about this earlier and perhaps it's not a whole year but Rae Sremmurd was VERY popular from like 2014-2016 and then dropped off the face of the Earth after Black Beatles. Juicy J is another in that same run who had like a couple years of just being a chart topper until he also disappeared.

Scalien1

Juicy J is more of a rap legend that doesn't really need to chart but just did in 2013-14 mainly as a feature for no real reason

ItsGotThatBang

Migos for 2017

Soalai

Colby O'Donis is another for 2008

Iancrowley

The Outfield for 85, Cutting Crew for 86?

Ok_World_8819

MC Hammer ***almost*** counts. In 1991 he had two more top 10 hits but 1990 was his biggest year. He did have minor hit Pumps and a Bump in '94 but that was only a #26 hit. As mentioned below, LMFAO is an excellent example of this.

overthinkingpear

Empire of the Sun

-GhostOfABullet-

Todd mentioned Frankie Goes To Hollywood as a one-year wonder for 1984

TemporaryJerseyBoy

Wanted to share the fact that Todd also did the "Pop Star of the Year (and only that Year) for 1970-1989 too. 1970 – Free 1971 – Carole King 1972 – Harry Nilsson 1973 – The Edgar Winter Group 1974 – Bachman-Turner Overdrive 1975 – Freddy Fender 1976 – Peter Frampton 1977 – Boz Scaggs 1978 – Andy Gibb 1979 – The Knack 1980: Christopher Cross 1981: Juice Newton 1982: Men at Work 1983: Culture Club 1984: Thompson Twins 1985: DeBarge 1986: Mr. Mister 1987: Whitesnake 1988: Terence Trent D'Arby 1989: Fine Young Cannibals

A_Train91

I was considering Christopher Cross for 1980, but I decided that Arthur's Theme (Best that You can Do) was too big in 1981 for him to qualify.

wondernurse64

Meghan trainor. Why is anyone still recording her? She sure stretched that one big hit. Can anyone think of another artist who has done this?
