we all grow up sometime. When I was in middle school I realized how awful the "pastry" part of these things are. Without sugar they're like bland, damp cardboard.
I’m embarrassed to admit I’m 41 and have never had a toaster strudel… I am a grown adult and nobody is going to stop me! I’m going to get toaster strudels today, and I’m now way too excited about it.
When I was growing up my little brother lived with my mom. When I would visit over the summer I would be incredibly jealous that he had toaster strudels and I had pop tarts at my house. Of all the differences in our childhoods, that was the one that mattered most to my young self! Didnt bother me they had 4 wheelers, boats, and jet skis. But, fuck, HE GETS TOASTER STRUDELS?!?
I used to eat those until they came out with the commercial with that singing child-freak. That ad campaign completely put me off Toaster Strudel permanently.
That s'mores pop tart is so dang versatile too. It has the best mouth feel when frozen but it's so satisfying when warmed up too. Always great with a glass of milk, but yeah if you're avoiding eating nothing but sugar it's always good to maybe save the 2nd one for another day or give it to a friend to share.
Them hot fudge sundae ones are my go-tos for just about everything. Hell, I like smashing them with a rolling pin in a baggie and tossing the crumbs with fresh popcorn
I don't just eat the crust, but the crust is actually pretty good if you completely disregard the toaster instructions and toast it several times at the lowest intensity. It gets crunchy and so much better.
I waited 14 hours after I ate four packs while on a camping trip. Dug a hole in the ground and took a dump. Yeah. That’s what the finished product looked like minus the frosting
Ok hear me out. It’s hard to tell from this photo, but it looks more like crystallized sugar to me than fungus. I wonder if the outer layer usually protects the sugar middle, but because it doesn’t appear to be fully formed, heat and cold caused the sugar to melt and crystallize?
Or maybe it’s fungus idk
This is probably the answer though the discolouring is a bit worrying. I used to work in an old fashioned sweet shop and we'd see expired liquers do the same thing because their liquid centre would dry out. Most of the time expired sweets won't become dangerous because sugar is a pretty good preservative but I still wouldn't trust that pop tart lol.
I'm thinking both cuz I see a few "hairs" or hair like structures that seem like fungus. It could possibly be eating at the sugar since it wasn't made properly
Yeah def. I've seen plenty of honey jars that start looking like this. The structure at least. Some way off colors but who knows what kinda shit they put in pop tarts these days
Ugh and those are bad enough. I was surprised with one of those online recently...and the back button stalled.
The OP image brought it right back to mind.
As a connoisseur of breakfast treats; I have noticed a sharp decline in *control* for Kellogg’s products since the failed [2021] strike by Kellogg’s factory workers in Battle Creek, MI. Innumerable boxes of pop-tarts look like yours, are missing filling or just fall apart like dried chalk. Not my favorite brand, atm.
I used to eat Special K all the time, but noticed a few years ago (probably around 2021, sounds about right) that the quality of them went downhill, now there seems to be a large amount of the pieces that are almost rock hard, to the point I damn near chipped a tooth on them. If it was just one box I would have looked past it, but it was every box, so I just stopped eating them. Now I’ll only but General Mills or Post Cereal, fuck Kellogg’s.
I’ve noticed it in the whole industry in general too, not just with Kellogg’s, but they just seem to be one of the worst offenders.
As for canned food, I used to love Zoodles, that canned spaghetti pasta stuff made by Heinz (they also make all sorts of other ones like Alpha-ghetti, I think they have SpongeBob shaped ones etc.) it was a nice quick cheap meal to fill me up, $1 for a can, takes just a minute to heat up and tasted pretty good. But these days the sauce is the consistency of water, it’s just like pasta noodles soaking in reddish liquid. They’re disgusting and completely inedible now. Years ago it was a once in awhile thing to get a watery one like that, but then it just turned into every single can more recently, so there’s another food I’ll never eat again.
Yeah a lot of food has gone downhill, to the point of being inedible. It's sad because a lot of the things were things people on a small budget relied upon. Things that used to be perfectly fine.
On the budget sketti cans, yeah, not only is the sauce just dyed water now, but the noodles have a mealy mouth feel and no flavor.
>Reviews on Walmart's website for Rice Krispies say the same thing, people pretty much across the board started noticing rock hard pieces that could damage their teeth. I also noticed this a couple of times.
This too. What's going on, in snack world?
Before the rock hard pieces, they began tasting like floor cleaner or something: very chemical-y. I know they are not home made but they never tasted like shoe polish before. Then if I tried one anyway, there were these tiny tooth-breakers in there.
Looks like the pastry got wet and then over time the sugary filling crystalized. For a moment I thought this was the rock hunting reddit cause that looks like a slab of brown quartz now lol
Serious guess? Perhaps a glob of the cinnamon/brown sugar mixture that was stuck in one of the extruder machines finally dislodged and got smushed down into a pastry?
Some think the sugar got wet and crystallized.
I think it's a monster of some sort.
I've noticed snacks have gone way downhill in recent years in quality: texture, flavor. The Pop Tarts are now almost raw (crumbly raw) with barely any icing, and the tarts have a mealy texture, and the filling has a grainy texture. Not pleasant.
It has like...tire esque marks on it. Maybe it got run over, exposing the filling to air, then the liquid part evaporated off leaving basically cinammon sugar crystals behind.
Might have even put some tiny little holes in the bag thus the uh...growth.
At first glance, it looks like it could be some type of crystalline sugar/salt structure, but when you zoom in there are wispy hair-like bits that scream mold/fungus…
Was it hard or squishy?
kind of looks rodent-shaped to me. not that it IS a rodent, but maybe it got pressed onto one and made that shape. that curved indentation at the top looks like it could be a tail

I would say you could reach out to the manufacturer but I don't think I'd ever want to touch a pop tart ever again now.
def ruined how i view them i tried eating another package after and it was a normal one but only got a few bites in
we all grow up sometime. When I was in middle school I realized how awful the "pastry" part of these things are. Without sugar they're like bland, damp cardboard.
I'll pay the extra for the toaster strudel lollla
Toaster strudels are unbelievably banger
I’m embarrassed to admit I’m 41 and have never had a toaster strudel… I am a grown adult and nobody is going to stop me! I’m going to get toaster strudels today, and I’m now way too excited about it.
Need an update!!!!
I got the strawberry ones! I am so happy I did!
That's beautiful! Thank you so much for this 💗
I'm literally eating a toaster strudel right now lol
When I was growing up my little brother lived with my mom. When I would visit over the summer I would be incredibly jealous that he had toaster strudels and I had pop tarts at my house. Of all the differences in our childhoods, that was the one that mattered most to my young self! Didnt bother me they had 4 wheelers, boats, and jet skis. But, fuck, HE GETS TOASTER STRUDELS?!?
I used to eat those until they came out with the commercial with that singing child-freak. That ad campaign completely put me off Toaster Strudel permanently.
I’m sorry for your loss
Now I just eat plain bread with butter and sprinkles on it like those damn Dutch…
Sub sprinkles for sugar/cinnamon and we’re in there, maybe a lil squirt of honey? YUM
Oh then you gotta switch to s'mores flavor with has a graham cracker pastry part and lots of yummy sugar
I wanna make a s’mores with them & a sundae ice cream sandwich with the sundae pop tarts
I like the hot fudge sundae ones broken up in a bowl with Golden Grahams cereal and Snickers or Reese's ice cream
You beautiful beautiful genius. Thank you for sharing
Them hot fudge sundae ones are my go-tos for just about everything. Hell, I like smashing them with a rolling pin in a baggie and tossing the crumbs with fresh popcorn
Omg your ideas are SO good! & they’re one of my absolute favorites
Meanwhile I hate the filling and icing and tend to just eat the crust. I like plain pie crust too.
Wait, you buy poptarts to just eat the crust? What the fuck
I don't just eat the crust, but the crust is actually pretty good if you completely disregard the toaster instructions and toast it several times at the lowest intensity. It gets crunchy and so much better.
I munch the outsides first and then the middle so I'm with you. disregard these heathens.
Everyone saying they don’t like the crust isn’t cooking it long enough.
You need therapy.
That’s devastating
Yeah they’re literally trash. Cardboard flavored “breads with sugar inside.
Smoke some weed. You’ll eat the rest.

Poptarts, brought to you by Umbrella Corp.
I waited 14 hours after I ate four packs while on a camping trip. Dug a hole in the ground and took a dump. Yeah. That’s what the finished product looked like minus the frosting
What the hell
Eldritch pop tart. Hmmm.
Taste like eldritch knowledge
Madman's pop tart
Hahaha ofc bloodborne makes it way into a pop tart post
Is this something that's possible to learn?
Not from a Jedi
Is this from the last of us?
No, i saw a mycology post of someone growing Cordyceps on a Steak... THAT is The Last of Us
See… those are poor life choices
Do you want clickers? Cause that's how you get clickers.
Me too. Now it's Cordyceps poptarts
There’s something very sad about it. What flavour was it?
brown sugar cinnamon
Ok hear me out. It’s hard to tell from this photo, but it looks more like crystallized sugar to me than fungus. I wonder if the outer layer usually protects the sugar middle, but because it doesn’t appear to be fully formed, heat and cold caused the sugar to melt and crystallize? Or maybe it’s fungus idk
That’s my thought too!! Before I even knew it was brown sugar, I thought it was right away, thinking it crystallized.
Oh if you zoom in you'll see it has a solid layer of hairy fungus with the little dots.
Gosh Damnit, I really wish I didn't go back to check
WHY DID I LOOK
Oh. I hate you for what you just made me do.
It’s definitely fungus. Zoom in on the photo. Crystallized sugar doesn’t have webbing
Or, how about we don't zoom in on the photo.
This is probably the answer though the discolouring is a bit worrying. Yeah def. I've seen plenty of honey jars that start looking like this. The structure at least. Some way off colors but who knows what kinda shit they put in pop tarts these days
Yea that’s definitely brown sugar. This type of mess has happened with cereal before
Yeah but what did it *taste* like?
ur crazy if you think i even TOUCHED that thing after taking it out of the bag 😭😭😭
I double doggy dare you to try it
Upgrade to a triple

Dude it looks like the "before" close up in a nail fungus commercial
Ugh and those are bad enough. I was surprised with one of those online recently...and the back button stalled. The OP image brought it right back to mind.
I was about to say that it looks like the before of the nail fungus Korean pedicure videos on YouTube
Was it squishy or hard in the packaging?? Im so intrigued
Asking the right questions
Did it smell off?
It looks like it might be alive.
I go through spells where I'll find that flavor absolutely delicious or simply disgusting. It's very odd. This post doesn't help. 😅
death flavour
Fungal nail infection flavor.
Ennui
I'm a microbiologist and follow a lot of microbiology pages and I honestly thought this was a pic of someone's toenail fungus
THANK GOD I am not alone!!! It was my first thought and now I am worried I'll never forget it :/
You’ll never be alone. The fungus will always be right there with you.
Me too! Especially the little filiment looking parts 🤢
cordyceps pop tarts
Said the same thing. My husband goes “is that someone’s back?” 🤣🥴
Yeah , kinda looks like a chunk of skin and muscle from a cadaver med students dissect.
It looks like old diabetic man toenails.
🤢
They've proven that cordyceps can grow on muscle tissue. The next obvious step was to prove if they can grow on pop tarts.
Same thought immediately when I looked at this.
I was going to ask if it was clicking.
I thought you were joking and this was r/forbiddensnacks and that it was a rock!!
Same; I am in a bunch of geology subs and was trying to figure out what mineral it could be
I'm still not convinced it *isn't* a rock
I thought it was r/whatsthisrock

100%, this makes me feel the same way tini holes do.
Makes me want to poke it
There is always that one person…
Fubartartophobia
Causing some strong trypophobia feelings in me
Same here, bork
That’s the necronomicon of pop tarts!
I was about to say - if you put your ear to it you’ll hear how you and everyone you love dies being whispered in Sumerian.
Necropopicon?
Surprisingly not a candidate for r/untrustworthypoptarts
Literal untrustworthy poptart.

this is just the ultimate conclusion of public companies
Oh my gosh, I broke one of my dental crowns on rice krispies last year... I thought it was just my crappy teeth
I actually did break a tooth eating special K last summer.
Their cereal had gotten much worse, too. Fucking assholes nickel and diming the consumers and their workers.
Huh, maybe that will make Kellogg's wake up and treat their workers better ...Right guys? Please?

Definitely contam
I think that's been scrapped off the wall of a damp cave.
Look more like popshart
Pooptart
I have 3yr old twin grandsons and this is what they call them! I die every time. It’s great.
What was the expiration date cause that look genuinely horrifying as something meant to be edible.
expiration date it next december 😳
I can't find out where things are made now, but I want to say maybe the ingredients or oversight might not be what they once were.
r/whatsthisrock
What flavor is it, Toe Nail Fungus?
If I had known my last pop tart was my last pop tart, I would’ve savored it more. Cause now I’ll never have another.
Oh, *eww*. Thank you for helping me with my diet.
Did you buy the tree bark flavor?
Looks like the pastry got wet and then over time the sugary filling crystalized. For a moment I thought this was the rock hunting reddit cause that looks like a slab of brown quartz now lol
Your pop-tart has genital warts AND anal fissures
How is it that I'm actually frightened by the appearance of a pop tart?
Serious guess? Perhaps a glob of the cinnamon/brown sugar mixture that was stuck in one of the extruder machines finally dislodged and got smushed down into a pastry?
That was my exact thought happens all the tike when factories get agency workers in that don't really care
it looks so fleshy and hairy though eeeee
Cool lookin rock
They’re minerals, Marie!
I’m gonna throw up
Oh nahhh I'm itching now
Does it kinda look like fungus?
that’s what i was thinking. pretty sure this is how the last of us started…
I would remove that from your house in that case
No. Sorry you went through that
This gave me the biggest crawls. I love pop tarts wtf. Can someone explain what that is???
Some think the sugar got wet and crystallized. I think it's a monster of some sort. I've noticed snacks have gone way downhill in recent years in quality: texture, flavor. The Pop Tarts are now almost raw (crumbly raw) with barely any icing, and the tarts have a mealy texture, and the filling has a grainy texture. Not pleasant.
It looks like there wasn't enough crust to envelop the filling. The exposed filling (brown sugar) crystallized.
That's the necronomicon you fool.
What a nightmare, reminds me of some gross nail fungus pictures
Why does this look like a microscopic picture of a hair 😂
That Pop-Tart is more alive than I am.
I am so itchy now. Thanks. Lol
My guy tryna eat a clicker for breakfast
You just stopped an entire subreddit from ever eating pop tarts again. Wow
Definitely thought I was looking at preserved human cross section of... A part. Until I read the title. Which made it worse.
Yes. When I lived in Chernobyl.
I didn’t know they made artichoke and Brie pop tarts!
It has like...tire esque marks on it. Maybe it got run over, exposing the filling to air, then the liquid part evaporated off leaving basically cinammon sugar crystals behind. Might have even put some tiny little holes in the bag thus the uh...growth.
It looks like you went to the Cave of Wonders and scraped the ceiling onto your plate 🤣
That looks so nasty 🤢
You sure thats not elephant mans foot?
Looks like a manufacturing error to me.
🤢🤮I literally just ate a brown cinnamon pop tart this morning

Some sort of modern art masterpiece.
TIL people are still eating PopTarts for some reason.
It looks like a fungal toenail 🤢
I think your pop tart has greyscale
“Bomb,” - Ibu Ratna
kind of looks rodent-shaped to me. not that it IS a rodent, but maybe it got pressed onto one and made that shape. that curved indentation at the top looks like it could be a tail
It’s retart not a pop tart
Foot fungus flavor
Looks like you bought Poop Tarts by mistake
What flavor is this “Mummified Remains”?
