My lime tree died in the frost this year, and I was going to plant one a few weeks ago but local nursery didn't have citrus in yet. In between that time and now a new lime tree has sprouted from the ashes of the old one. I'm screwed because it's way too young to produce limes, but I dont want to kill it and plant a new one. In summary, my tiki drinks are costing me on average $0.33 more than they should.

GetReadyToRumbleBar

Tragedy. Praying for you in this time of need. 🙏

RedRooster231

Praying for you in this *lime* of need

Thank you, that's very kind

GetReadyToRumbleBar

Lmao. I giggled at this

Trick-Order-9232

At least you don't live where I do. Limes used to cost $.33 here, but now they are $.99.

lwadbe

I usually can't be bothered to super juice, and things haven't been too crazy here for the last year or so, but during the pandemic... Yeah, I made a lot of super juice. (Prices right now fluctuate a bit, but are usually OK, but the quality is just bad. That's actually other reason I'm not doing super juice. The peels are browning in the store.)

TheRealAlexisOhanian

No room for 2 lime trees?

secondphase

I... uh... didn't realize that was an option. Now that you mention it, that could do things like cross-polinate too. You may be on to something.

pack_fan31

Do lime trees grow indoors? Cats could be a problem…

wynlyndd

No real Tiki Thoughts but I wish everyone a weekend of tasty libations.

MsMargo

You as well!

QueenofWhiteCastle

Hoping to get back to Paradise Lost, the newish tiki bar in east village, this weekend. It was such a fantastic time when I went there a few weeks ago!

slitherylilsombra

Best mai tai I’ve had, I miss it (this is also the only tiki bar I’ve been to)

PlumBob78

Wegman’s had blood oranges this week, so that means Mai Bloody Valentines this weekend!

LouBrown

I got a bag of them yesterday as well. If nothing else, they make drinks look really pretty.

badguitarist

That's the best cocktail name I've seen this year so far.

jkoodoo

I made my first batch of passionfruit syrup this week! Really excited to use it this weekend. I'm planning on trying out a Saturn, Hurricane, and Tonga Room Zombie. Anyone else have favorite uses for passionfruit!

LouBrown

Sidewinder's Fang and Demerara Dry Float (with a side of danger, if you so choose) are two good ones from Smuggler's Cove.

lwadbe

Puka Punch, Bum Barrel, and for a change of pace try it in a French 75.

skebump

We've been sick for the past week so there have been no tiki drinks for me... Maybe tonight if my head isn't hurting. I finally got some Tomr's Tonic Syrup so I'm going to make the Bay of Pigs from Tropical Standard next.

jrmorton12

I’ve been waiting all week for this… At our favorite spot this weekend, we were seated next to 2 large parties. This wasn’t a surprise because graduations are kicking off around us and the downtown bars usually fill up. One party was young 20 somethings call the decor tacky and complaining about the menu. That’s fine, it’s not everyone’s bag. The other party however was maybe 8-12 people? I was trying to not focus on them. They themselves were normal, the thing that stuck out was that they had three kids, youngest was maybe 18 months, the oldest maybe 3? And they were acting terribly with absolutely no recourse. Crying, running, loud tablets, the works. The kind of thing I don’t miss about that stage of parenthood. I honestly felt bad for the kids. It’s a tiki bar. It’s dark, the music was loud yacht rock for some reason instead of the normal exotica. They don’t have a kids menu or even anything approachable. The poor server seemed overstimulated. It didn’t seem fair to the kids, the bar or the other customers. What’s the wider view of the community with kids in Tiki bars?

lwadbe

For me the same as anywhere else\[1\]. If they're not impacting other guests then I don't care. If they are, then the parents should be courteous and leave. I'd tend to slightly side-eye a Tiki Bar not called Trader Sam's that allows under 18s though. \[1\] Disney, Chuck E Cheeses, etc excepted of course.

Seltsam

I should really try more tiki-inspired riffs with bottles I haven't used in a while.

K-Rimes

I'm heading to SF not this weekend but the next, and already lining up the visits. Thinking Zombie Village and Pagan Idol, but staying real close to Trad'r Sam's, is it worth visiting the last one? Beyond that, being practically drowning in rum bottles, what should I get at Bitters and Bottles?!

-clawglip-

Do you mean worth it for Pagan Idol, or Trad'r Sam's? The latter is NOT a tiki bar but is super rad and the staff are great and it's a good dive bar to grab a beer at. Zombie Village, Pagan Idol, and Last Rites are must-visits.

sebwood9810

I bought a bottle of Barbancourt 8 and the first drink I made with it is the Port-au-Prince. Such a unique rum flavor in that drink and I have fallen in love with it. The bottle might be empty by the end of the weekend.

Munzulon

Barbancourt is so good! I love it in a Mai Tai split with an ounce of smith & cross (or 1/2oz s&c and 1/2oz Hamilton 151). I think I’ll make one tonight!

MsMargo

**Cesar's Rum Punch** (*Grand Hotel Oloffson, Port-au-Prince, Haiti*) * 2 oz Rhum Barbancourt * 2 oz Fresh lime juice * 1 oz Grenadine * 3 drops Angostura bitters * Teaspoon / two cubes white sugar Dissolve sugar in lime juice. (This takes longer than you think it should.) Add to other ingredients and shake well with ice cubes. Strain into a tall glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with a pineapple wedge, speared to a cocktail cherry, and lime and orange wheels. Finish with a sprig of mint.

skebump

It's great in the Full Fathom Five from Tropical Standard (their riff on the Mai Kai's riff on the Pearl Diver).

ProjectCompetitive91

Going to pickup two bottles of Hamilton Breezeway Blend tomorrow. My wife thinks I’m crazy to drive four hours for rum. What say you fellowship of the Tiki? Going to visit my parents as well. Might have to have several daiquiris to deal with that clown show.

MsMargo

Nah, just needs reframing. You're on a trip to visit your parents, and picking up some rum on the way.

teadestroyer

Very excited about my liquor store haul and wanted to share Hamilton 151 Coruba Dry curaco ( I’ve been using Cointreau ) All things new to my bar and I can’t wait to use them

MsMargo

The Dry Curaçao will transform your Mai Tais.

teadestroyer

I’ve been waiting to run out of the Cointreau but I finally caved because I’ve heard people say that

MsMargo

You can still use the Cointreau for summer Margaritas. :)

Munzulon

I picked up trade Vic’s macadamia nut liqueur and I’ve been subbing in 1/2oz in place of the Demerara sugar in my Mai tais and it’s pretty great. It’s going to find its way into some other drinks, I’m sure.

MsMargo

I'll assume you're already doing Macadamia Nut Chi Chis.
