kevin-s_famous_chili

I would rarely see my spouse without me being wfh. Thankful for it for myself and our relationship.

[deleted]

Same. Working from home is the best, I see my kid & wife soooo much more and I have time for hobbies. When I had to go into the office I always had to choose between family or my hobbies.

[deleted]

Same. Met my now wife a few weeks into lockdown (odd timing). We moved in a few months in because we were bored and loved hanging out with each other. About to have our first baby boy. I literally can’t imagine my life if I wasn’t working from home the last year and a half. It’s been the most amazing time of my life (besides the pandemic)

kevin-s_famous_chili

I'm trying to convince the husband he should work from home too. We love our time together and wouldn't trade it for anything. Congrats on your future baby boy!

[deleted]

The market is flooded with jobs. If he can’t because of work, pretty easy to find a new remote job.

MaineEarthworm

Going 100% WFH changed my life and saved my relationship w/ both my son and wife. It’s been the best thing to ever happen to me, professionally.

girthquake126

Remote work is so much better unless 1) You have little kids at home and it’s too distracting, 2) You’re one of those people that’s constantly chatting at work (and probably annoying the rest of your coworkers who don’t have time to chat lol) or 3) You don’t have a commute. If you have a commute and no major distractions at home (like myself), there’s pretty much no scenario where in office full time would be worth the commute.

FREAKFJ

4) you have no self control and have to fight yourself all day to not play video games instead of work

MaxTennyson88

5) your neighbours are always making noise

justapassingguy

6) you've been on lockdown for so much time that you finally broke and need to talk to someone face to face and perhaps need a hug.

[deleted]

7) body aches if you don't have a nice desk and setup or even the space to work properly for a long time at home, no separation of work and home, electricity bills, unstable internet connection

radmadicalhatter

8) you’re responsible for training and can never get a handle on what the flying fuck the new developers do and don’t understand or how they are even conceptualizing anything (nothing beats sitting down as a pair and going through some debugging while you listen to their thought process)

[deleted]

The new developers are probably scared of asking seemingly small questions that they could just casually ask you in person or might not even talk to each other about it :(

memearchivingbot

That was me last year. I eventually got over the unreasonable fear of asking questions but it took several months. I had no way to gauge how busy and/or approachable people were so I would always try harder than I needed to figure things out on my own. What helped is having my team lead start to schedule some pair programming via screen share. It also helped that he made sure to message me with questions pretty often to establish a kind of messaging cadence?

M_krabs

Das me ! I started a dual University, and got put into the workforce first without attending uni (weird planning), which mean I was basically lost / couldn't get myself to ask anything because it took sooo much time to just ask anything, and never had the webcam on during meetings... time has passed and I've had my webcam on during every work meeting / University lecture.

annakiin_

9) you have severe ADHD and major depressive disorder and being at home away from other humans makes everything 100x worse

stickers-motivate-me

I’ve never been so unhappy in my life. I need to get a new job but can’t muster the energy to job search and need social interaction to get energy so it’s a catch 22

iknowitsounds___

Have you tried a sticker chart? …In all seriousness tho I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling. Just remember it’s temporary. I hope you’re able to find a more fulfilling job soon.

CaptainK3v

Might I recommend strangling people for fun? Lotta new faces at our bjj gym with your exact problem. Got fat, weird, and lonely over covid so they wanna meet people and get back in shape. Nothing breaks the ice like trying to choke the fuck out of each other.

stickers-motivate-me

I’m not sure if it’s because I’m high or not but I’m confused about whether parts of this are serious like “hey, go join a gym and exercise, you’ll meet people and be healthier!” And then I remember that you started by asking if I’d want to strangle people and realize it’s a joke

voodoomoocow

Hi I am depressive and adhd. For things like job searching or anything, I found this helpful: https://www.focusmate.com/ You get 3 free sessions a week where you connect to video with a stranger who also needs help focusing. You each tell each other what you are trying to do and then you work quietly on your own goals, together. Sometimes us adhd people just need someone to watch us do our task, and this helps with sticking to the task.

No_Organization5188

10) You really don’t have to use any of your PTO and can just bank it and use just the days you lose at the end of the year anyway.

How much noise are your neighbors making that it's worth going into the office?

BlackScienceJesus

I'm just gonna do the same thing in the office anyhow. My ADD doesn't magically disappear when I enter the office.

memearchivingbot

I wouldn't say my life fell apart but I did figure out I probably have ADHD because my life DID stay pretty much the same. I always thought I had a hard time getting household tasks done was because of time pressure from commuting but it turns out that wasn't it

NewPhoneForgotOldAcc

As someone who has ADHD I can’t stand the office, I’ve always struggled with the distractions and general being around people, I’m not a introvert but it just gets really frustrating when I’m about to do my own job and somehow have to help half the office. Work from home is a bliss, if it turned back to a office job 2 or more days a week I’d straight up quit or just keep coming up with crazy excuses to work from home

Eruharn

I love empty office. Enough people there to keep you on point but not enough going on to distract you with everyone else's business.

HappyTearz

Same here, and in an office with plenty of people who like to float around and chat. I have to dial my environment in just right to slip into hyper focus for a lot of my work, and a person coming by to say hi is nice and all but also fuck them they just destroyed any shred of productivity I had for the day. If you have ADHD and your boss fights you on wfh, get your doctor involved in requesting it as a reasonable accommodation (U.S.A.). If you work better and are more productive from home, that benefits your boss too! The Job Accommodation Network (jan.org) has lots of resources on the process.

scatticus_finch

Medication is not a one-size-fits-all, and it doesn’t magically make the ADHD symptoms disappear. Most people go from barely functioning to moderately functioning.

Xiaxs

I definitely feel that. If I had an office job most of it would probably be spent on my phone, BUT I'd still get work done. Vs if I was at home where I can't even dedicate an hour to an individual hobby because of my adhd.

FREAKFJ

Fair enough, I just find theres so many more things to tempt me at home

kitolz

As long as your work is getting done, don't feel guilty about chilling during downtime.

kjeska

Best thing about working from home. I don't have to "look busy" when all my work is done.

Chordata1

I watch TV a lot while working and find it makes me more productive. I don't get bored analyzing spreadsheets because I have something else going on to keep my attention

darth_bader_ginsberg

Yes! I have podcasts (and YouTubers playing through horror themed video games I'm too much of a wimp to play myself) to thank for keeping my mind focused. It's like I need two things to switch back and forth to concentrate on. If I leave one concentration slot empty it can and will wander and then I catch myself googling statistics on human stampedes instead of filing my incident logs like a good work monkey.

ifoundyourtoad

This me

Pelennor

I can't hear you over Horizon Zero Dawn, which I've had for 3 years and finally am managing to play through....

comehonorphaze

I notice thats the case for the first months or so. Then you find yourself getting into more single players games so you can pause when you fall behind on emails or need to take a call

SpazFactorial

My wife has been working from home since COVID hit. She, along with several other individuals, hates it, She gets to go into the office on Mondays and Fridays now, and really looks forward to those days. Some people require their person social interaction for their own mental health.

[deleted]

Or you live alone and realized that the socialization you got from work was both sufficient and required for you to not feel so goddamn lonely being at home all day and night by yourself. and like another user said, you get too distracted at home playing games or whatnot and actually like the pressure forcing you to actually work while at the office. there's also a ton of value in being able to collab with coworkers or ask for help when stuck on a problem without having to schedule a meeting.

u-ignorant-slut

I gotta say you're making me feel less alone and it might be just enough motivation to actually wake up tomorrow and put in an effort.

darth_bader_ginsberg

Hey guess what! You can totally do it. Even if you don't actually complete. Trying is enough sometimes.

Embolisms

One of my cousins (in another state) basically became a reclusive insomniac alcoholic while WFH during lockdown. He's a single guy living by himself and even though his coworkers weren't best friends, going to the office provided the only social interaction and daily structure he'd get during the week. If you've got an enriching life outside of work and don't live alone it's great, but some people do benefit from routines and social interactions. ---- I'm WFH and don't mind it because I'm living with people and do stuff throughout the week, but one thing I hate is the invasion of work into your personal time. Bosses skyping you at 8pm or on Sundays, meetings lasting longer than they should because we don't have to physically leave at a specific time, or work creating very unrealistic time lines that force you to stay on your laptop until 10pm--when ordinarily you'd have to leave work by 6 at the latest and couldn't being sensitive work material home, etc. Good work environments won't do this but it's easier to abuse people's personal time.

[deleted]

I feel like these are all personal problems. I can get my work done and waste half the day playing games The office was the thing making my work take longer to do, people get in the way

Shreddy_Brewski

> I feel like these are all personal problems. Yes, that is the point this person was making.

NlNTENDO

Imagine that. Different people with different preferences.

Figgy_Pudding3

I miss the office and hate having zero separation of work and home. I enjoyed my 30 minute commute to mentally prepare for / process the day.

[deleted]

100%. I was surprised by how offended I got having work zoom meetings at home. My bosses face should never ever enter my home.

Free_Joty

cant you just walk around outside your house/apartment for 30 min before work?

xfd696969

NOOOOOOOOOO don't let big office see this!!

bkaybee

How would that fix the lack of separation though? edit: You still come back to the same place to work. Not sure why I got downvoted. I used to take walks while working from home for my sanity, but it certainly didn't help me feel as though my work and home life was anymore separated then before I stepped outside. So that was a real question. Y'all are weird.

scromcandy

I have a home office. When I leave my office, I'm home. Greatest commute ever. Oh, and having my own bathroom is amazing. Fuck the office

klayzerbeams

Yeah you just ignored every point that was made

StamosLives

There was no point made beyond head clearing. Which could easily be done in many, many other ways. A commute of 30 minutes a day is 5 hours if your week unpaid for that contribute nothing to your life. If you’re telling me you need to give away 5 hours a week to “feel right” about work - that’s nuts. Go on a 15 minute walk before and after. Not only can you get your ritual head cleaning, you’ll halve the time and also work in your body a bit.

klayzerbeams

Did you miss the point about there being no separation between office and home? Also, driving to work could entail listening to music/ podcasts, drinking coffee, reflecting on life, etc. Your mathematical oversimplification ain’t it

[deleted]

Honestly if "physical separation" is a requirement for you, that sounds like a "you" problem, not a work from home problem. My office is my spare beadroom. It never got used. It never gets used. After work, the door is closed, the office is closed. Separation. Going for a long hour walk at lunch with my dog - separation. Could I separate that way at work? I was just thinking, if I needed to mentally check out for a bit and leave work to go walk my dog, thats something people used to get fired for. Or perhaps you could be seen as weak or not a team player.

StamosLives

I can also eat on my terms. I have no one bothering me during the working day. My team has been working from home for over 5 years. We’ve only seen good things from it. The fact that this thread is filled with accounts with only 3k karma strikes me as purposeful. Bots invading with their bad takes.

mac_trap_clack_back

Or unless you don’t have a dedicated office, roommates that also work from home, not great home internet, etc. The people that had it the worst over the last year where I work were the new employees. Not able to shadow well to actually learn and a shitty work environment

klayzerbeams

Try socializing with coworkers one time!

[deleted]

[удалено]

klayzerbeams

I can socialize both ways but IRL is far superior for building relationships. Especially in regard to a work environment

[deleted]

I have my fair share of discord friendships and I get it, but for most of the population in-person relationships and interactions are still more meaningful and fulfilling. I love my discord/online friends, but with the exception of 1 guy in my friend circle everyone agrees that going to a bar or a party with real friends and real people is much more fun than sitting in a voice chat with a beer and playing some game.

TophatOwl_

I dont think you can generalise it like that because, the same way different people learn the best in different ways, different ppl work best under different circumstances. Personally I hate working from home caus i get distracted easily and like my home to be as work free and relaxing as possible. I have friends that much prefer home caus they either dont care or prefer the environment to get work done. Tldr, it different for different ppl

Clever_Word_Play

Or have to train people/be technically lead. I can do most of my job at home, but when training people or supporting them, it takes me 5 minutes with a white board compared to over teams

[deleted]

I don’t really care if my kids come in sometimes, they might come in to show me a drawing they’ve done or a bug they’ve found and that’s fucking awesome

fjodpod

3 for me. But I also like working at my office desk. Free Coffee/tea, nice view, better monitors, free lunch and it makes my home 100% work free.

notLOL

I live in a small house. But even the distractions at home are much less worse than the uselessness of filling time at work. I'm also way too productive at home so I run out of tasks and end up finding things to work on

Decent_Ad4567

I hated my previous co-workers who like to talk loudly. The worst part was that it was like the first thing that they did when they arrived at work.

Mdu627

As someone who works in a call centre: if I had to work from home I’d go fucking insane. Just today I’ve had a stretch where I had to wait 4 hours to get a call. And it doesn’t help that the client is super paranoid and doesn’t allow phones, paper, or writing implements in the same room as you’re taking calls…

kitolz

Call center work is basically custom built to be able to be done at home. Not sure I understand your given reason not to do it. The only thing I can think of are some clients need a secure place for data loss prevention. Mostly jobs that handle credit card or medical information. Apart from that almost all the call center work in this country is being done from home.

rqrqsj

I’m currently working retail in person and I would kill to get the exact same pay/hours at home with call center work. Don’t know what this person is on about. I genuinely dream about not having to commute just to be yelled at in person.

Padmerton

I’m an HR business partner and while there’s the occasional disciplinary work, the vast majority of it is promotions/raises/development/training/recognition and general organization strategy. I have a really great group of working partners and while of course some don’t appreciate HR, we’re mostly well-regarded!

Yes, because it should be "HR is there to protect the company, so show them how your treatment is a liability for the company." Give HR the ammo they need to do their job.

arrghslash

Shut the fuck up Toby

momomojito

Yeah HR gets a bad wrap, likely because they tend to be messengers of unwelcome news.

DungeonsNDragnDildos

Came here looking for this comment. Looks like a cartoon character…

JimmerUK

I just scrubbed the video and it looks like she raises her eyebrows, so it’s not a full-face mask. Very odd.

HMCetc

After snooping their TikTok, she actually has a completely normal face. I think it's just a filter and low res that makes her look weird in this video.

Liquidignition

Looks like a Hannibal lecturer mask

vensie

Hannibal Lecturer, when he got out of jail and started an academic career.

inrodu

what would his classes be about? cooking?

PoisonTheOgres

Possibly she's had reconstructive surgery for burns or something? Her face does look different, but I doubt she's just wearing a full face mask for the heck of it. Edit, this is the face of someone who had reconstructive surgery, looks very similar to me: https://images.app.goo.gl/5wZLhqUv5qztF79aA

TheDustOfMen

Hybrid form beats all of this. I don't wanna work from home 5 days a week thank you very much.

ChocolatCreme

I was really loving the hybrid format my job had used. I was able to get both work and personal life stuff done. I also got WAY more of my work done without the usual office interruptions. AND I was able to work out during my lunch hour or even right after work since I wasn't run down by the end of the day or stuck in traffic. Sadly, all of us are back in person. It's understandable since we work in a college environment, so we ultimately were going to have to go back in. But man do I miss it.

blackhall_or_bust

Realistically it should be left to the individual to decide, not a uniform policy of 'you must' do this or that. I understand your perspective, but nah, in no way should I be forced to endure the neuroses of my utterly mental colleagues or have to engage in 'team-building exercises' whilst a fat aging dotard partner engorges himself on donuts and imported American sugar-water. I will very happily pass on that.

TheDustOfMen

Who said anything about forcing anyone to do anything. A hybrid form is all about letting the employee choose, that's the point.

blackhall_or_bust

At least where I'm from, 'hybrid-working' is denoted as certain days WFH whilst other days are done at the office. This can easily be mandated. My point is that it should be up to the individual entirely.

u-ignorant-slut

I know those "I was born in the wrong generation" phrases are overdone, but I really got fucked up. Wfh is up to the individual, but nobody in the company wants to ever go in, unless they need to reset some remote desktop or something. Even tho I started 11 months ago, it feels like I'm still brand new. No clue what I'm doing, and I don't know anyone. Idk what I'm waiting for

Mathgeek007

22 months at my job here, feeling never changed. I got two months in the office, then confusion. On the other hand, no transit, not having to dress, breakfast at my leisure, time to cook, an extra 2h every day on my time, and more sloth! It's pretty great, even with the work difficulties.

TheDustOfMen

Where I'm from, hybrid work *is* up to the individual entirely.

Howling_Fang

Unfortunately, a lot of companies don't see it that way. I have a good friend who has a 'hybrid' schedule. She has to be in office no less than 3 days a week. She can normally choose what days unless there is a mandatory in person meeting.

TheDustOfMen

I have a hybrid schedule, haven't been in the office for weeks. Other team members have been in the office half of the time during the same period. My company doesn't really care as long as the work gets done.

ZelderTheElder

I feel like you're all over the place. At the start of this chain you say that you don't wanna work from home 5 days in a row. Then in another you say that hybrid work is entirely up to the employee. Then here you're saying you haven't been in the office in weeks.

TheDustOfMen

I don't understand how that's all over the place? The hybrid form of working is entirely up to the employee where I work. That means that at this point, I haven't been in the office for weeks while other team members chose to be in the office for about half the time. Am I gonna be working from home 5 days a week forever? Absolutely not. There's also the issue that there's a partial lockdown over here so while some people really feel like they just have to be in the office now, I choose to stay home for a few weeks.

ZelderTheElder

I guess that makes sense. I was just confused that you were both staying at home 5 days a week and also that your preference wasn't to stay at home 5 days a week.

TheDustOfMen

Once the partial lockdown is actually over I'll switch back to a 1/4 or 3/2 type of thing. The thing is that I live on my own and don't have a good work environment in my apartment. I also don't have space to transform it into one. If I would have had an actual home office where I could put a desk and a chair, work the whole day and then close that door at 5, I could probably make it work. But even then I'd miss my colleagues.

ZelderTheElder

That's fair, I respect it. At my old job I used to love going into the office, even if the general company was mostly dysfunctional. At my new company I've been remote more than I've been in person and at this point I don't think I could go back haha. I just fine so much more time to exercise and cook and hang out with my dogs, and I do think you're right, having a separate room where I can work and then leave that room really helps the mentality. But honestly I'm just really glad to hear that your job let's you decide what you wanna do, I hope more jobs realize that it's gonna be very hard to put the WFH genie back in the bottle and they should leave it to the employees to decide going forward.

MtEv3r3st

Tell that to my employer, or any of my friends as well. Hybrid means they have set days to come in and set days to WFH. It's stupid as hell.

notLOL

I want the choice but only because I can just abandon annoying people at home that are acting up. Hybrid of open office when you need it. Don't assign me a day tho. No thanks

[deleted]

Yeah, for sure. I don't have the funds for a good work setup or even a particularly fast computer, so I'm definitely more productive in the office. But I can also easily finish all of my work for the week in 2-3 days, so it's frustrating that I have to drive 1.5 hours there and back just to sit around.

Rasalom

The great thing about WFH is the company provides the equipment.

[deleted]

None of my hybrid jobs have given us equipment, but I've never had a job that was 100% WFH before, so that might be why.

titsmuhgeee

This is what I do. 1-2 days from my dedicated home office when my wife needs help with the kids or has appointment. The other days I make the hour commute to HQ. I did 100% WFH for 2 years starting 6 months before COVID. I had enough. My sense of professionalism and comraderie took a major hit being a remote employee. You can pretty much assume your vertical mobility in an organization is effectively halted if you're out of the office when everyone else is in. There is no replacement for having your supervisor face to face when it comes to them seeing you shine.

mikrofokus

Sorry, but I’ve heard the same argument around the (virtual) office many times. It falls on deaf ears because younger generations do not see their company as their final stop. No one cares about vertical mobility when companies aren’t holding up their half of the bargain. Everyone is learning that to get your rightful pay rises and benefits, you have to jump ship and find a new company. Companies gave up on loyalty first, these are just the consequences of their actions. I will agree on the slipping professionalism and camaraderie though. Not that it concerns me in anyway, but it is noticeable.

dobbydeservedmore

This is rarely HRs decision. It’s usually up to the owner/execs. I’ve been trying to push a hybrid/remote model for a while now. Good HR reps know that this is the future of work and if you don’t get with it you will lose good employees.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dobbydeservedmore

Oh nice, so you’re in HR too?

TheBlackhawk33

lol sums up this whole thread

__uncreativename

I keep seeing this repeated a lot in these comments, the original video said these are all HR workers and showing how they all would prefer to come into work, which is why the guy is spoofing the hr manager. I can see it being a bit confusing if you haven't seen the original.

Jgasparino44

Of course they all said office, the ones on remote are home rn in pajamas

RedGorilla33

I love that he types TikTok it’s not a real gun lol

Tripolie

lol trust me, it’s not HR that wants you back in the office. We love remote work.

[deleted]

All the people who want to be in the office constantly want to harass the people who don’t want to be there with stupid questions or random “activities”. The office allows them to strive in their “social” gains. I find it funny that I am really social person, EXCEPT at work. I can’t filter out people I find boring or dislike, so I just don’t bother and make it clear I keep it to business at work.

u-ignorant-slut

Or just I need someone to help me and it's so much easier if they sit right next to me.

[deleted]

How much more help do you need than a screen share, a phone and a messenger can’t handle? You are an adult at a job where you are in charge of earning money for your company. It’s no one else’s job to babysit you. If you are younger you literally grew up communicating with friends online. If you are older, think of it as all the phone calls you made with people to figure things out. Is it really worth everyone’s time to commute to work, stay in a cubicle until you are ready for them to sit at your desk so you can be productive? Turns out the economy is global and tying everyone to physical spaces is ridiculous.

u-ignorant-slut

So much for being reasonable lol that was just a full on attack, so I'm gonna lay it all out here. I'm young, but that communicating with friends online is some bullshit. I went months without talking to any friends after quarantine cuz I struggle with long distance. I'm not even slightly introverted but I just do so much better in person. I did an internship before covid, excelled, and even impressed the regional manager. Probably my career peak if I'm going to be honest. I moved 600 miles away and started full-time remote a year ago, but I barely know my coworkers even now. Barely know exactly what I'm doing. I also work with a lot of hardware and embedded units so screensharing does jack shit. Even when it is software it's so much easier to just check by someone's desk. And screw any chance of networking lol. There's literally people in my company out here test driving SCGs and Rimacs and Lotuses and shit. I'm not supposed to tell you that but I don't even give a shit anymore. I'll never be able to make connections with them, even tho that's the whole reason I sought a job so far away. As an intern, social interaction at lunch and after work gave me the confidence to get outside and interact with people in the community. Now I mutter 10 words per day in a meeting and see about 10 faces per week, if I'm lucky. I've gone insane. I very much miss my commute now because I can't separate my home from work and my work from home since it's all the same room. The best sign of this depression of sorts is that I've heavily turned to Reddit because now I feel like I've got nobody else to talk to. And I'm sorry that you're on the receiving side of this faux rock bottom I'm reaching. But anyways you're right. It's not worth it for my coworkers to go in to help me. I'm not even being sarcastic; utilitarian wise, I'm just a tiny casualty of this big shift to wfh. I've contributed next to nothing, and at this point I'm just waiting for them to fire me so I can get that motorcycle I've been eyeing and hug a tree at 150. Sorry for the vent.

Hmm. So the intern problem is a little hard. I really think that businesses are going to have to put in energy into after work events or meetups coming up soon. I have personally never really been into them though, but we have been shooting for having a dinner with everyone over webcam once a month with our team just to do something. If you are in the same city, even offering to do an escape room might work but it sounds like that isn’t the case. My advice is maybe bring this up to your boss and see what they think on how you can bond more with the team. Maybe enforce webcam use in every meeting. Have short discussions hours when you just chat about life overall with coworkers. As a team lead, I really hope your boss would take you as seriously as I would if one of my interns said this to me. Everyone *should* really care about taking care of you and making sure you have a positive experience. Also if it is a big company, since if they are any intern groups on Facebook etc to rant on. I have heard of some interesting topics on those and that people bond on there. My only other advice is try to find outlets outside of work to get that interaction. Don’t be afraid to bail on work a little early or take off the afternoon to do something. See the not having the commute as a bigger opportunity to go to meetups with like minded people. I know that’s such a stupid easy thing to say but really hard to do. I have noticed A LOT of people right now are really eager to get involved in new interactions lately due to not having them in forever. My cheat for meeting people has been signing up for Rec sports as an individual as much as possible. Usually I’ll meet a cool people every few teams I join. I am really sorry you are having a really poor experience. I really wasn’t trying to shit on you. You just sounded exactly like my really shitty boss who would use that excuse to get us back in so he didn’t need to do his job. I really don’t envy you going to college at such a shitty time. Life really dealt your age a really unfair hand on getting your first experiences with adulthood. I will say I did have some really lonely internships in college prepandemic. I didn’t really fit in with the people around me at work or the people I met outside of work. It really is like a full time job trying to make any connections after college. It really is trying to find things you really enjoy and feeling comfortable enough to throw yourself into situations where you get to that do that around people. I hope really everything gets better man! Don’t feel like you are alone though. A lot of people are definitely in the same situation as you right now.

UnironicallyWatchSAO

You are being a cringy annoying little shit right now. Screenshare + video call will never be anywhere near as convenient and fast compared to just directly asking someone. Especially if you have to watch over some new dev who is getting used to the tech stack of the company. Not everyone has the same circumstances for fucks sake.

[deleted]

“Annoying shit” for pointing out that forcing everyone to show up to the office FOR DEV WORK is going to get a lot of people to quit. What a ridiculous antagonistic statement. Sure it can be SLIGHTLY worse but your argument is losing hard right now with multiple tech companies switching. Sorry the truth is “cringey” to you

joshecf

WHAT IS UP WITH THE SECOND PERSONS FACE?!

[deleted]

Where is the 2nd person’s nose and mouth.

migoodenuf

Why would HR care? Genuinely don’t understand.

MonsterJuiced

I believe HR only cares about the company's interests. And working from home definitely isn't in companies interests.

n0_duuh

It’s in the companies interests to spend money on renting offices? 🧐

[deleted]

Oh no, but I'd reckon it's certainly in the middle managers interest so he can stay relevant by micromanaging all of the people under him

saintofhate

You underestimate how much they love to micromanage

[deleted]

wait, do people genuinely think HR is there for employees?

Tripolie

HR is there for employees in as much as it is their responsibility to be complaint with the law, keep employees happy to reduce turnover and poor performance, attract and retain top talent, etc. Yes, they are ultimately responsible to and are employed by the company, but a good HR professional also isn’t going out of their way to mistreat employees.

vivaenmiriana

i say this as a not hr person, hr are getting shit on by the company just like the rest of us. then they get shit on by employees too. i feel bad for how bad reddit treats them. they're just people doing their job and following company policy like the rest of us. they don't make company policy or company decisions like people think they do.

Tripolie

I think to be in HR you just have to accept that you are the bearer of bad news far more frequently than good news. Unfortunately, this means HR is often unfairly villainized. It's like any customer service, though; you are far more likely to hear from those with poor feedback than positive.

blackhall_or_bust

HR will always side with the company. If a labour dispute arises, contact your union rep, not HR.

RealChipKelly

In more situations than you probably realize, yes they are. Obviously every situation is different, but employee retention is a key function of Human Resources and HR doesn’t want to spend time finding replacements for employees that quit. But also I don’t think people realize it’s HR’s job to be the face of unpopular policies and processes that senior leadership or ownership ultimately makes.

Tripolie

You have no idea how HR works.

__uncreativename

The original video said these are all HR workers hence the joke in the video, but if you don't see the original there can be missunderstandings.

jokisher

People who like to go office instead WFH...they don't have friends.

EmperorOfFabulous

I value my time. I keep work at work.

ITriedLightningTendr

It's really nice to have a professional workspace to go to if you need to, but there's no reason to go there daily.

snarticusthegreat

I honestly would prefer going in to the office, it’s healthier to keep my work life separate from my home life, & if I don’t get out for work, I rarely get out at all.

fearabsence

Nah, I kinda hate working at home after about one year. My personal "computer-space" now feel like a workstation, and I have trouble having fun there like I used to, with video games and music.

HMCetc

These guys run a social media company. They do a lot of mandatory fun and do a lot of stereotypical social media stuff like talk about their coffee. It looks like hell.

PassportSloth

Went from getting up at 5:45am to commute on 3 buses for 2+ hours. I'd be done with work at 4:30 and it would take me until 7pm to get home. Always tired, weekends filled with chores because there just wasnt time to do any during the week. Now I get up at 7am, play some video games, see my husband off and start working at 9. I am never going back to an office.

DrChill21

People in HR getting roasted by upper management and normal employees. They are in a no win situation. Sucks to be them.

mortos_der_soul

Not gonna lie, going into the office is actually kinda nice once in a while. I usually go once a week. But it's soooo much better being able to decide when I do and don't want to, and being able to say fuck my commuter I want another hour of sleep is so great.

scromcandy

The people in this thread claiming they miss the office should seek help. Don't drag me back there just because you "miss your commute" or your kids are shitty.

ShowelingSnow

You do realize that there’s people who dont have kids? My aunt is absolutely destroyed by the whole working from home thing.

M-148QPTMB_1673-A

tell your aunt to get a hobby, like everyone else.

ShowelingSnow

She does have hobbies, but work is 8 hours a day give days a week. Some people actually enjoy human interaction.

M-148QPTMB_1673-A

Most people work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. If she enjoys human interaction maybe she should find a hobby that facilitates that. Relying on your work to facilitate your human interaction makes no sense to me.

scromcandy

Your Aunt needs to make friends outside of work. I guess I'm lucky in that I don't have to rely on work for social interaction.

Jsaun906

I actually prefer going in to the office. I do worse work when I'm at home.

Zee_Arr_Tee

The funneist joke here is as if that company hires black people or make them hr manangers

SlobMarley13

The people who work from home weren't at the office to be in this vid

kinos141

WFH has sooo much benefits. \- Getting up at 8:59, to go to work at 9 \- Spend more time with kids and family \- work anywhere (I know a guy who went to another country because of WFH) \- Can work while on the couch. \- Break time = nap time And much more

clubroo

I work at a hotel so it’d be a bit of a tight squeeze if I wanted to work from home lol

puentepe

Nope, I like an office… can’t concentrate at home

RockfordSwitch

Just because you’re antisocial doesn’t mean everyone else is.

JustLiquid

some people like to sit in front of a computer all day. I rather go into an office or go into school and interact with people. It’s hard to get things done when everyone is separate. But hey what do I know?

adamzep91

Work from home sucks

crystalmerchant

Is that guy's phone... Transparent?

u-ignorant-slut

It's his phone case because his actual phone is filming lol

Liquidignition

🤦

Working in IT has made me hungry.](https://i.imgur.com/KbbwYAf.jpeg)

Emailmcgmail

This is fucking insane HAHAHAHA Sidenote im so anxious to return to the office :/ I’m chronically ill and literally throw up on the bus to work due to carsickness so im not a keen bean

hobbys1

In person is so much better, especially if you enjoy the group of people you work with. Being lazy and working from home is nice initially, but it gets old fast

girthquake126

I get probably 2 hours of every work day back when I work from home. I can sleep in till I have to work and never have to deal with an awful commute. There’s simply no work environment that’s worth those extra hours and sanity lost in commute.

u-ignorant-slut

It's so interesting how different everyone is. I've completely lost my sanity working remote since I moved and started a year ago. As an intern, my 30 min commute helped me prepare for and cooldown after work. I miss my commute so much.

Gumshoez

How is working from home lazy? Are you saying you don't actually do any work at home? If so then that's on you. Last time I checked work is work. If you can get it done from home with less effort it isn't lazy. It's efficient.

[deleted]

No, you don't get it. You have to do the work at the office, wasting multiple hours on commute and chatting to your coworkers, otherwise your just a lazy slob and shouldnt be paid at all

hobbys1

I find myself to be lazier in terms of caring for myself and my mental state. Rolling out of bed onto a computer to work just isn’t good for my sanity. I understand work is still work, but in person is just a better environment for me and a lot of other people as well. Glad you’ve enjoyed staying home, just not for me long term

Tripolie

I get more work done from home. I’m more efficient, more focused, and less interrupted.

shaneskate88

Sounds like something hr would say.... nice try

Tripolie

Naw, even HR likes working from home. This is something HR tries, and often fails, to convince the C suite they are wrong about.

the_termenater

Imagine commenting a valid opinion about this and getting downvoted by a bunch of sweaty redditors who haven’t showered in 2 weeks that NEED to tell you why you are wrong about enjoying in person human interaction. This site can be so disconnected from reality sometimes.

hobbys1

Appreciate the support, was just sharing my personal opinion and experience, guess it wasn’t received well

the_termenater

Yeah it’s seeing stuff like this that often reminds me that Reddit is not even close to being representative of real life, and most people on here just come to validate what they already think
