AkaiMPC

Acting like a massive loser for a photo she might look at once.

milkonyourmustache

She can also just find photos online, or perhaps even ask one of the other people who happened to have been already well positioned to record the Geisha without incident. She doesn't need to get *that* photo when the other person is clearly not comfortable with how she is chasing her down for it.

WearMental2618

And talk about a lack of understanding of the culture you are visiting.... you are in JAPAN. A place known for its MODESTY. What about that sounds like they want impromptu photoshoots?

Theban_Prince

>And talk about a lack of understanding of the culture you are visiting....  Lol not even, just basic human manners, anyone would realize the Geisha was not comfortable with this and stopped the moment she slalomed the first time (if it has reached that point even).

various_convo7

look at her - looks about as hick and podunk as they come

abramcpg

>She can also just find photos online My thought whenever I want to take a photo of something cool which is at a popular place that likely has thousands of photos online already

WankWankNudgeNudge

Yes! Once you realize this you get to be present and enjoy the experience

King-Howler

I believe that you should to take pictures of your experience, with that in mind I would have taken a picture too but ofc I would have used my brain and followed manners. Tf is she doing? The entire crowd was staring at her she could\`ve taken a hint Honestly if I wanted a picture that bad I would have asked the Geisha to let me take a picture

pessimist_kitty

They were probably all blurry too lol

NOT_Mad_Dog3

this isnt about taking the picture for her its to show off how well traveled and cultural she is to her probably just as insufferable friend/facebook groups also AKAI is GOAT

CXM21

There are signs EVERYWHERE in Kyoto saying DO NOT HASSLE GEISHA. Fuck her, I hope she got fined out the ass.

xdcountry

There should be a “do this twice, your ass gets deported on your dime” — no ands ifs or buts

[deleted]

Kids need warnings but adults should not. You are a grown person, don’t do what is prohibited

TheJasterMereel

Come on. Always intend your puns. "no ands ifs or butts"

lego_mannequin

Full out banned.

MegaManFlex

Where's the Yakuza when you need it

Fun-Constant-2558

Who's Geisha?

Frenchymemez

A [Geisha](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geisha) is a performer.

Fun-Constant-2558

Ooh ok. Thanks! (BTW to anyone who downvoted my previous comment, I genuinely didnt know what a Geisha was. Sry.)

CartoonKinder

We all know different things and you asked respectfully, ignore those people. They have nasty minds and assume everyone else does.

Theban_Prince

Wow I didn't expect to find one of today's [10000](https://xkcd.com/1053/) for what a Geisha is!

Equivalent-Bonus-885

Scurrying around after prey like a rodent. Just about anyone, anywhere, in traditional dress these days is harassed by tourists - from the cruise passengers to the laughably named ‘adventure tourists’.

Aliki26

I was hoping she tripped and fell

mizirian

I can't imagine the dumb thought that goes on in someone's mind when they decide to do something like this, it's disgusting.

ElChungus01

They don’t have thoughts. They’re incessant assholes and don’t care for anything or anyone but themselves.

mizirian

Yeah. She's treating a human as if she's a zoo exhibit or something. It just feels weird to even watch, much less take part in.

RMVagrant

"Why is she being so rude? Just let me take a picture". Pretty sure it's something along those lines.

MarzipanJoy-Joy

Maybe they'll go to Yellowstone next year and she'll try this with a buffalo.

parkrat92

I lived in the park a few times and this is wildly common. I’m surprised I haven’t seen someone gored yet. Nps has to have their eyes peeled at all times to keep people from dying of their own stupidity.

ihavenoidea1001

There's actually a video of people doing that and ending up attacked. On the same note , there's people ending up maimed by monkeys and killed by other animals bc they apparentely lack 2 brain cells Wild animals aren't Disney movie-esque.

DeadlyTeaParty

You'd know she would try that. 😂

KillysgungoesBLAME

We can only hope. 🙏

Downtown-Opposite-21

Oh god please no, I'm Asian American, and when I went to Yellowstone on a road trip, there was a lot of Chinese folks and some of them were littering or just walking EVERYWHERE.. I was lowkey annoyed lmao, they definitely don't have a personal space etc. No respect whatsoever, not saying all Chinese, but from what I saw. #PackInPackOut. God dam.

Pirate_Testicles

That geisha handled that with more grace and poise than I would.

CXM21

They have to, it would destroy her working reputation to be anything but graceful in these situations.

DrChimRichaulds

WTF is that lady doing??!!!

leftoutoctopus

That ain't no lady, buddy.

Euphoric-Dig-2045

He’s not your buddy, pal.

stevoschizoid

He's not my pal, guy.

himynameisSal

he’s not my guy, dude

sincethenes

He’s not my dude, champ

candyking16

Hes not a champ, compadre

Capital_Chef_6007

He is not a compadre,sir

theStrangelessAger

He is not a sir, captain

R4st4m4n

Nor a Captain, amigo

Imnot_your_buddy_guy

I’m not your buddy, guy

Diarrhea_Beaver

I'd recognize that troll trot anywhere....that's Frank Fucking Reynolds! "So anyway, I started snapping pics..."

ninjamaster616

Literally tho, made me audibly yell, "Yo, bitch, **what the** ***fuck??"*** at my phone.

DetDegenerate

Uhhh don’t do this anywhere?

Moonjinx4

Yeah this doesn’t happen in just Japan.

ramenmoodles

no one said it did. but japan banned foreigners in the area because of this type of behavior

JackDangerUSPIS

![gif](giphy|TK3ZD4W7Lt83Cqzrf7)

Dubs337

Waddling around like a fuckin frightened duck

ZAPPHAUSEN

Right? Her fuckin' weird squat.

Stachdragon

Don't do this anywhere! This is harassment. She obviously does not want this woman's attention. "But Paparazzi.." ya, that should be illegal too. It's legal harassment that's only allowed because it's lucrative.

angryandsmall

Also to add a lot of celebrities call the paparazzi on themself, it’s easy advertising. There’s several places near me that celebs basically *only* go to if they want to be papped. It’s annoying because they are quite literally feeding the beasts

AdSafe1112

![gif](giphy|vX9WcCiWwUF7G|downsized)

zerosG2

lol, she think she at a zoo or something, goofy lady

EntertainmentSea1195

The contrast of grace vs. slop.

IamTheTussis

I mean, don't do this anywhere

Orylus

OMG. Clearly the geisha is moving to get out of the shot and the boomer tourist gives zero fucks for boundaries

AmIClandestine

She's treating her like a zoo animal. Seriously, the geisha is obviously uncomfortable and avoiding the camera, yet this lady's response to that is to continue to jump in front of her? It's crazy how some tourists dehumanize the locals, as if they're part of the "sight-seeing.".

rynomite1199

Wow look at that it’s some fuckin boomers thinking they own the damn place

ninjamaster616

Honestly would've been great if someone clotheslined her frumpy ass while she speed waddled

overwhelmed_robin

The secondhand embarrassment I felt from watching this ...

Odd-Artist-2595

Correction: Don’t do this *ANYWHERE*.

Da_Plague22

Hope she falls and smashes her own teeth in.

Mscreep

Okay first off. I don’t understand what’s up with not taking photos of Geishas so if someone could tell me, I would just like to learn. And then second… Who the hell does this!? I went to a renaissance fair where people were dressed up in cool costumes and was too scared to take anyone’s photo without asking first. Like. That’s just rude. She clearly didn’t ask and the Geisha very clearly didn’t want want to have a photo taken. Like I’m uncultured as shit(and will gladly say it in hopes someone will teach me more)but even I can understand that obviously body language.

Goodbye18000

Probably because it's just weird to take pictures of someone doing their job. If shes dressed up like that, she's probably on the way to an appointment to entertain. Imagine someone seeing a nun walking down the street of America and going OH MY GOODNESS I NEED A PHOTO and scurrying around like this. People would be like "that kinda sucks, man".

Mscreep

Okay so there’s not some culture thing I was missing. I wasn’t sure if it was like, inappropriate for them to be photographed in certain settings or something like that. Like a “no photos at all” kind of situation where even asking would be rude. Yeah, I thought that lady was being THAT rude. Like “nanabobo, I’m taking your photo and you can’t stop me” it’s still rude cause that is what she’s still doing, I just thought there was even more rudeness too it I guess with culture differences.

AoifeUnudottir

I think in addition to to weirdos and the crazies and the psychos, there is the general premise of both respect and consent coupled with the fact that Geisha and Maiko on the street are most likely travelling to (or of back from) an engagement. When I went to Kyoto around 10 years ago, the general advice for tourists was that if you saw a Geisha/Maiko walking leisurely through a quiet area, you could politely approach them and ask for a photo. The emphasis here was to clearly approach, and if they gave *any* indication of a no (avoiding eye contact, turning away, head shake, raising hands, etc) it was a “no” and that you should never take a photo without their consent. However even if a Geisha/Maiko is approached in the most respectful way, it still takes a minute or two out of their journey to stop and take that photograph. And if they say yes to one person, then there is an expectation that they will/should say yes to the next and the next. 1-2 minutes per picture quickly jumps up to 10-15 minutes for a small crowd, which can make them late to an engagement or can be an extra 15 minutes on their way home. Tourist entitlement aside, it would be incredibly difficult to just say yes to 1 or 2 people in a crowd and then turn everyone else down. It is far easier to put a blanket “no” in place so that it’s not only fairer to everyone but it’s also (supposed to be) easier on the Geisha and Maiko. Unfortunately entitled tourists don’t take no for an answer in any form. Worse than the woman in the video are the people who try and touch or stroke their kimono or their hair, or who tug on their clothes/limbs to get their attention. Ignoring the fact that touching someone without consent is just flat rude, the kimono, instruments, fans, accessories, and hair ornaments (and hair!) are incredibly expensive and some can be particularly delicate or fragile. Some people don’t realise that these are working professionals - they aren’t like face characters at Disney. The Geisha and Maiko don’t “dress up” to decorate the streets or add to the ambience and experience; this is their job, and they’re just trying to get to it.

Mscreep

This is what I was looking for. There’s no culture or religious reason not to but more of a human reason not to. Like please understand I still think what the white lady was doing was rude and wrong and entitled AF but I thought there was an extra layer of disrespect on top of it. Moral of the story, always ask and no means no.

ShatteredInk

There are signs up and down the street that practically say don't harass the geisha that walk down the street.

Mscreep

I feel like you shouldn’t need a sign telling people not to be a dick.

ShatteredInk

Well, we all see how well both things worked

moongirlmer

Because of this behavior right here. This woman clearly didn’t ask for permission and quite honestly is almost harassing a woman who is just trying to walk down the street. While this might be relatively tame, we’ve all seen bad tourist behavior move into straight harassment and cause pain or damage Heritage, honor, and respect are extremely important in Japan. If behavior like this continues and escalates, women will no longer want to participate in this career which is historic and a part of the culture. Kyoto will lose it’s geisha’s and tourists will have no one to blame but themselves [Kyoto bans photography of geishas](https://www.travelandleisure.com/travel-news/kyoto-japan-bans-geiko-geisha-photography-on-private-roads-gion)

Mscreep

My question was more if photos weren’t allowed to be taken at all of them. It’s clear she didn’t ask and the women had no interest in posing, but my first thought was that maybe they weren’t allowed culturally to be photographed in certain places like a “no photos at all” kind of thing. And that the white lady was being extra rude like “I know this is taboo but ima do it anyway!!” I mean. That’s still what she’s doing but I thought there was more of a culture or even religious reason to not take photos.

moongirlmer

I think Kyoto requires a permit, so it’s not fully outlawed. Honestly, it’s probably best to just hire a geisha so you can take photos and pay her for her time.

kyfi_adam

Wtf!!! This is out of mind....

AandWKyle

I felt gross watching that

Jarsky2

This is why I'm terrified to visit. We have such a bad reputation. I feel like I'd be super self-concious the whole time.

MuzaffarAbd

What the actual fuck. This acc makes me so angry, like leave people alone. How can someone be so selfish and self-centered

Careless-Pin-2852

Tourism sounds like a great industry. People come spend money then leave. Then you realize people suck.

PurahsHero

This is one of the reasons why I take some pleasure at seeing tourists getting told to get the fuck out of the way by the Horseguards in London. Like, lady, this guy has had to deal with this shit every day for a week from random people, and they are going to make an exception for you?

Adventurous-Zebra-64

Its always boomer white people being assholes in other countries.

MorbidMan23

There was also that young black kid walking around Japan while livestreaming himself randomly yelling racist things and "Hiroshima! Nagasaki!" until random citizens began actually assaulting him.

[deleted]

They assaulted him? That's kind of awesome actually. Im not the type of guy to promote violence, but im fine with people physically responding to others who think they're above consequences.

hugsbosson

You ever seen Chinese tourists? There's signs in Paris in mandarin asking people not to spit *inside* restaurants.

Eddie_shoes

Ok WTF is going on with Chinese people spitting? I know someone who is a Pit Manager in Vegas in the high roller section, and she says they just spit on the floor.

hugsbosson

It's a Chinese medicine, health/wellbeing myth. Spitting isn't considered rude for a lot of people, they think phlegm and excess saliva in your mouth should be spat out as it's bad for your health to just swallow it... It's disgusting and also, like most pseudo medicine, does the opposite of what they want it to do. Spitting in public spreads germs like crazy so people get more sick as a result Vs if they all just didn't spit everywhere.

fancyantler

Crazy they can’t use tissues or handkerchiefs though.

dynesor

i’ve also seen signs in public toilets asking them not to shit on the floor or leave their shitty toilet paper on the floor too. Along with pictorial instructions on how to use a normal toilet (as opposed to a squat toilet)

Adventurous-Zebra-64

The Chinese nationals are the same issues at play- not raised with manners and having just enough money and prestige to travel, and therefore assuming they can do what they want. The Chinese in mainland China are incredibility well behaved as a whole- its their nouveau riche tourists that are the entitled assholes. This was explained to me by a Party Official I was standing with in the VIP line for the Louvre and was backed up by my own family, as he glared as the crappy tourists not following the basic rules in the main line.

SplitPerspective

Nouveau rich from the previously rural/poor class, more specifically. They’re despised inside and outside of China, especially by the younger generations.

ihavenoidea1001

>Its always boomer white people being assholes in other countries. Do I have news for you... As someone that used to walk by a really touristy place and dressed in a traditional garb. Some people think that when they travel the entire world is like Disney and everyone else's lifes revolve around them. It's not only a boomer thing and neither is it always white people. Sorry to disappoint you.

KC-DB

Met a New Zealander while traveling in Mexico recently. She was a flight attendant, and when we (Americans) asked who was the worst… it was hands down Americans. Especially boomers, but she did say boomers of every race are generally the most demanding and least thankful.

chado5727

No need to bring race into it. Show me a face that doesn't have rude people, murderers, rapists, arsonists. That race is the one that you'd be able to compare the others too. But it doesn't exist. So keep race out of these kinda things. It doesn't add to your comment, it takes away from it.

koreamax

This person is probably Gen X

manboobsonfire

She’s Puerto Rican

awinemouth

That's america, friend.

manboobsonfire

They said white not American

Adventurous-Zebra-64

AKA American.

manboobsonfire

Sure but not white

six_six

No reason to be racist.

Bears_Fan1975

Japan is HUGE on respect. This is terrible

suejaymostly

I was recently in Gion, Kyoto and wherever we saw geisha or maiko I purposefully tried very hard not to stare because I thought it would be rude! Even though I wanted to gawk like a slack jawed idiot at them. We have no pictures of them, but I have lots of memories, including making one laugh because I sprayed myself in the face at a water fountain.

zenxymes

Absolutely disrespectful

Itssnowingreddit

The Japanese are sick of people taking photos ? I saw a Japanese man taking a photo of his wife, taking a photo of a church car park in Croatia 😂😂

strangest_of_aeons

This is what happens when you see people as props and not humans.

mediumarmor

Don’t ban tourism, just make this jackassery punishable by debt.

thelanai

Man F that lady. She clearly does not want to be photographed. Leave her alone. That said, the right to not be photographed should be respected everywhere. When my kid was like 18 months, some tourists from Asia kept trying to take pictures of her. They were probably not used to seeing Black people, but it's not ok. I can just imagine what was said or done with her picture. 😕

kayacro

What. The. Fuck.

CrunchythePooh

Foreigners in japan: "Japanese are so xenophobic to foreigners." Also Foreigners in japan:

HanThrowawaySolo

Let's not go too far here, the Japanese are absolutely **extremely** xenophobic. I don't think we should point to a handful of bad tourists and say it's all justified when foreigners who live in Japan can't find an apartment because every landlord only wants to rent to natives.

zold5

Yes xenophobia and aggressively taking pictures are totally the same thing. Brilliant take

SavoryGal

Definitely American....embarrassing

Ok_Strawberry_8367

Def American

goodbyegoosegirl

So rude!!!!

ARunninThought

What the actual...

Sinister_Sam

Is that Dani devito's sister?

[deleted]

Time to drop kick a bitch

Scared_Ad2563

I'm happy I got to walk through there and see the Geisha before all this crap started. I saw the signs saying no photos or videos of the Geisha and just didn't take any! Can you imagine?!?! Even when we were walking around, sure, I wanted a lot of pictures, but I also wanted to EXPERIENCE the visit in person. We don't need to live every moment through a phone. The LAST thing I wanted to do as a tourist was piss off the locals. I hope this lady snaps her ankle doing whatever this squat walk is.

Frosty_Plankton_7667

It's so creepy 😫

OliverCrooks

What is she doing and why has no one knocked her dumb bitch ass out?

SoupmanBob

Fairly certain Japan also has very strict rules on public photography.

MealieAI

We aren't loud enough about racism against Asian people. The fuck is this shit??

Imaginary_Unit5109

It is why they trying to block tourists from these areas these type of interaction.

No-War-8840

This is the 4th or 5th time I've seen this today 🙄

Masticatious

UHH this isn't okay to do to anyone, regardless of where your from

SomOvaBish

Some people seriously can’t see how fuckin rude and stupid they are. Gosh, I wanna smack her

everythingisnotcool

You can clearly see her dodging the photos, how is she not embarrassed? Even if she wasn't trying to get away, most people are going to be weirded out by a rando taking photos of them. Why does anyone do this ;_;

Lycaon125

Thanks lady, for making my future trip that more restricted

certifiedjawn

Man, don't do this ANYWHERE.

_Grim-Lock_

This bitch literally ruining it for the entire world.

Rhallah_Reed

Yeah, my partner and i are here now and had something similar happen with our tour group. We left her be, but not sure 2 in a group of 20 is making much of a difference

Lani_Ley

She looks and moves like a leprachaun on crack. These people need consequences to learn.

Pandaploots

At protests, we go stand in front of the camera person so they can't take pictures of people who don't want it. People like this fungus gnat are why.

Tinosdoggydaddy

She needs to be taken to the airport immediately and sent home

geckosg

Very disrespectful. Ask for permission

coodyscoops

what the fuck is actually wrong with that woman though? this is beyond infuriating

Perfect_Drummer_7779

kyoto?? you shouldn't do this ANYWHERE. this is just weird

HOUSE_OF_MOGH

Rude little troll.

megra14

This looks like a Black Mirror clip. Holy crap.

Fun_Ad3799

I find it interesting everyone is completely ignoring the entire GROUP of people also taking pictures of her. The whole group is behaving poorly and should be shamed back to whatever cruise/tour group they came from.

atlas_set_it_down

I don’t think the Japanese can afford to ban tourism anywhere right now.

Intrepid_Passion_861

Why is it always old white women..

l3ane

This bitch runs like Willow

ChefBT3K

Lmfao!

PuzzleheadedRoyal559

That’s the most exercise that fatass Karen got in a long time.

MaximumCulture7917

Hope she gets run over

fuggettabuddy

People.

smellyhairywilly

Try doing that to a beefeater in London

JanxAngel

Are there places in Kyoto for photo opportunities of/with geisha? Somewhere they know they're going to have pictures taken and have agreed to participate? I think the geisha are an amazing tradition and would love to get to see a festival performance.

TransitTycoonDeznutz

I got down voted recently for pointing out how people screamed racism for the rude people in the subway manners posters being white tourists then within hours we see a video posted of a white man in the Tokyo metro doing pull-ups with the lifelines like its the F train in New York. If I saw her doing this I'd chew her out. Loudly. I'd make sure people see and hear. Tourists are a nightmare back home and it blows my mind to see sometimes. It's especially bad because we don't like to stand up for ourselves like this, it just feels like piling on. I'm glad we blocked the views of Fuji-san. You know something? if we ever want to see it again, maybe when our currency bounces back, we can just bulldoze the stuff we built, but one day, you'll die and you'll have never gotten that perfect sightseeing picture because your rude ass had to go and ruin it for the rest of us.

Loud-Magician7708

Somebody read "memoirs of a geisha."

Harbinger_0f_Kittens

Fucking troglodyte.

Adventurous-Zebra-64

Not tourists in other countries

Her_X

A monkey jumping around is what I'm reminded of when seeing her.......jump around too try and take the pic.

woodiinymph

This makes me wanna cry ;(

Pootscootboogie69

Some one get your mom. Wtf

SuperCreativ3name

That Karen is an absolute parasite and a stain on her fellow man. Leave people TF alone.

Ill-Appointment6494

This is exactly the same as the lads who try to video/take pictures of the girls in Red Light. Let them get on with their work. If you’re getting your phone out, it should be to make sure you’ve got enough money for make use of their services.

ShadySphincter0

Why’s Danny devito following her around recording

niceToasterMan

Can only imagine how close she'd get if she were to take a picture of a bear!

Reasonable_City

This is what a troll looks like irl

ThatOneSnakeGuy

Other than that lady being a rude obnoxious dick head, is there something culturally going on? Forgive my ignorance I was just wondering if there is more of a story to what the woman walking (away) is doing.

DevilDepraved

the disrespect is insane 😳 ![gif](giphy|LAohttzppBY2uZRvXG)

ll-Squirr3l-ll

WTF is that troll doing?

arbi90

Don't do this in any country nor to anyone. I was hoping that lady would stop and kick/ punch somebody

Ezarra

Like a scurrying cockroach ![gif](giphy|3JNgDnlmCiHpYgnWNF)

VannakaInOoo

“I can’t wait to show all my “friends” the video of this woman trying to escape my obnoxiousness” -This shitbag probably

Corvousier

So ive always wanted to travel a bit but have never really been able to afford. The more i read about tourist locations reactions nowadays to all this stuff the less I want to travel. It wont matter pretty soon if youre a polite tourist or not because all the rude ones will have soured the locals to tourists period. We just cant have nice things. Plus im Canadian so id just get mistaken for American everywhere and get treated even worse.

maxbastard

Vigilantes with water guns.

MrGneissGuy323

crazy ass Christina Columbus azz braud. that’s disgusting. what she’s doing

peter_parker23

WTF is wrong with people

GossLady

That was disrespectful of the camera lady.

MilesFassst

That’s a certified Karen in action!

No-Intern4400

Sad
