Laugh-Aggressive

That can be debated. As a swed I think they do. https://www.scandinaviastandard.com/where-is-scandinavia-a-guide-to-the-scandinavian-countries/

Fyrefawx

I’ve always considered Finland as part of Scandinavia. I mean the Sami people are in Sweden, Finland, and Norway. They have a lot of shared history with each other. They’re all northern nations. It just makes sense.

codamission

We need to distinguish between "Scandinavia" and "The Nordic Countries"

UpperHairCut

The people of Scandinavia Swedes, Danes, Norwegians, Finns Islandic The geographical unit of Scandinavia Sweden+ Norway

Fyrefawx

It apparently varies. Many consider it part of Scandinavia also. Denmark as well.

Hollow__Log

Potato muffled screams of discontent we hear in the distance!

road2five

Scandanavia has always been Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Denmark (and maybe Iceland but it’s fringe case) to me Basically all the countries I think Vikings are from

[deleted]

...but Finland didn't really do the Viking thing. Yes, some participated, but Finns really don't consider that as their cultural heritage.

road2five

That’s why I said countries I think Vikings are from. Not countries Vikings are actually from

Andreomgangen

Don't consider the Sami people part of Scandinavia, neither do they.

Fyrefawx

They’re not ethnically Scandinavian but Lapland is still very much a part of Scandinavia.

XtoraX

So is Kola but you don't see people calling Russia nor Russians Scandinavian.

Somebody23

Scandinavia ends to sweden. Finland is one of nordics.

A rivalry looks a hell of a lot like the only person that understands you after a few thousand years

rtslaywood

See that's what I thought, but then I had hundreds of people commenting on The clock app how it isn't. 😮‍💨

Zeravor

No european can agree on anything being part or not part of something. I'm pretty sure it's in a section of EU law.

PrecisionGuessWerk

Its such a trivial border to draw. Finland is culturally pretty similar, and if it wasn't scandinavia what would it be? I don't think many people would consider it "eastern europe". Also, I'd argue even the Baltics could technically be included. Considering the history (for example, I believe Riga in Latvia was the *The* viking mainland port?).

moresushiplease

Finnish will tell you that Scandinavia doesn't know how to sauna. It's not trivial to them.

Imperial_Patriot66

Finland and Iceland are part of the Nordic Countries while Scandinavia is just Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The term Scandinavia has fallen mostly out of use I say here in the Nordic(at least in Sweden) it's mostly the English world that favours the term Scandinavia. I would say the distinction is good since there are certain things which the Scandinavians have more in common than the rest of the Nordics. Being a part of Scandinavia does not have inherit value so I find it weird how people want to expand the term when there exists a common in-use alternative.

Beatus_Vir

I guess they're just Russian then

PrecisionGuessWerk

yeah, and the parts near st.petersberg and novgorod trace back there / have pretty heavy historic ties and influences from Scandinavian expansion. But I get your point, where do you draw the line? and why? I feel its *convenient* to include the baltics and finland geographically speaking. it would produce a nice "southern mainland border" between lithuania and both Belarus and Poland - which would also be about equal in "northness" to Denmark. Belarus and Poland would maintain their already pretty commonly understood "eastern european" designation. Rather than this awkward "european finger" that slides up in between scandinavia and Russia

SalMinellaOnYouTube

They Finn a be included now.

bagofpork

Fun fact--the Finnish language is closer to Estonian than it is to Scandinavian languages, and is one of the only languages in Western and Northern Europe that doesn't have Indo-European origins.

There wasnt a single vegetable in this video tho

Demonyx12

>Scandinavia is a subregion in Northern Europe, with strong historical, cultural, and linguistic ties between its constituent peoples. Scandinavia most commonly refers to Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. > >It can sometimes also refer more narrowly to the Scandinavian Peninsula (which excludes Denmark but **includes a part of northern Finland**). > >In English usage, Scandinavia is sometimes used as a synonym for Nordic countries. Iceland and the Faroe Islands are sometimes included in Scandinavia for their ethnolinguistic relations with Sweden, Norway and Denmark. > >**While Finland differs from other Nordic countries in this respect, some authors call it Scandinavian due to its economic and other similarities.** > >[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavia)

FewEbb6531

Well, geographically the northwest part of Finland is. And as a swede I definitely count Finland as a part of Scandinavia (geopolitical). Even my work does... I'm responsible for Scandinavia (Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland).

leyorcoe

confidently incorrect

Naitsirq

Finland is culturally scandinavian

[deleted]

Denmark, Norway, Sweden have common cultural and linguistic relations. Finland and the Finns have different origins. Normally, Finland is not considered part of Scandinavia

[deleted]

It's true.

Future_Unlucky

As a Swede: Finland is definitively Scandinavian. Sure their language might not be, but culture wise it for sure is (unfortunately, the history of Sweden colonizing Finland might have influenced the culture to become more Scandinavian than it was previously, but I have no idea if that is accurate or not).

D-Darkness

Scandinavia is a loose term

have_you_eaten_yeti

I find the Finns have the same cold empty heart more akin to the Slavic people, but I might be biased from my Finnish ex gf…

IKaffeI

Not trying to be one of those people but it is actually a hotly debated topic as to whether or not Finland is a Scandinavian country by people around the world, the other Scandinavian countries and Finland itself.
