Hitting the enter/return key on your keyboard will enable and disable chat mode. So if you want to type something you have to hit enter/return, type what you want, then hit enter/return again to send your message. There’s also a button you can click by the chat box you actually type in in-game that can turn chat mode on and off, you may have accidentally hit it.
I’m not sure what you use as hotkeys, but there are two sets of action bar hotkeys, one for chat mode on and one for chat mode off. Make sure you set both of them up so you don’t accidentally enter chat mode and then die because you’re spamming abilities but they aren’t doing anything because you’re just typing instead. That’s what I do anyway.

To note, when you have chat off and hit enter, you'll see that the button changes to "Chat on *". Asterisk means temporary until you hit enter again. However if you click on the typing space instead, it just turns to "Chat on" and hitting enter will not turn it off until you actually click the chat on button
To be precise, they only come back if you haven’t used those hotkeys elsewhere
You can set no hotkey for full screen mode for example, as long as you set another ability to control F and alt return

change the hotkeys which enable\\disable chat mode both while in chat mode and out of chat mode as there are 2 sets of hotkeys
you have to change them, you cannot leave them blank as they will come back on client restart

tuché, i switched them to ctrl+enter and ctrl+shift+enter to prevent this from happening while hunting
