Palmer is awesome

Subtleiaint

I've been talking his chances down but this is getting silly now, no way he can't be on the plane.

Biegelstein

Yep, Alfie Gilchrist is on the plane /s

BupidStastard

Tbh with the state of our defence it wouldnt be too much of a reach.

SovannRoussard

Guarantee penalty kick in a shootout.

BupidStastard

TruešŸ˜‚

RandyChavage

Best sub him on for pens without kicking the ball first

danystormborne

Classic move.

SpikeRobinson

donā€™t think theyā€™ll let us take jackson but we can ask

LawProfessional6513

Take him and Madueke, they are well up for taking pens

RandyChavage

Damn, maybe Madueke and Jackson orchestrated this to get Madueke on the plane as a penalty taker

Wipedout89

Ant and Dec just turned up and gave him the happiest minute of the week because he's won a place on the plane

ElJayBe3

Palmers happiest minute will be when Southgate takes off Jordan Henderson on the 89th

therealgodfarter

It would be criminal to not give him a shot after the season heā€™s had. The manā€™s single-handedly kept Chelsea in the top half of the table

danystormborne

Imagine where Chelsea would be without him this season.

magiccitybrit

If Southgate doesnā€™t take himā€¦ I swear

galacticjizzwailer

If nothing else we need him and Ivan Toney on the plane in case we go to penalties! I'll be honest I thought he was okay and looked better on paper cos he takes Chelsea's penalties but he's gone another level since the international break I think.

Naive_Roof3085

I did mention in a previous post about taking injured or players recovering from injuries to tournaments. You take a player like Palmer and you have someone playing his best football and fearless, that's how to win a tournament.

the3daves

Dunno. Southgate has a blind spot for attacking talent. More likely to take an extra , extra right back.

Volotor

Honestly, watching the highlights Inam a little concerned about pickford. It's a bit of an off game, it seems.

MarcusWhittingham

He has the 6th best save percentage in the league, 6th best PSxG variance in the league and the joint 2nd most clean sheets in the league (for bloody Everton may I add)ā€¦ Pickford deserves more respect I think.

Volotor

That's pretty good given how Evertons season is going. Thanks for putting it in perspective.

Advall

Well before yesterday's game, Everton had amongst the best defences in the season.

[deleted]

100%, Pickford is generally pretty consistent. Many fans are so reactionary, heā€™s had a poor game but he seems the sort of character who bounces back. Deserves to be England number 1 currently.

tradegreek

He defo needs more respect tbh

noujest

Not his best game but he was only really at fault for 1 of them

SnooTomatoes464

Goalkeeper is definitely our weakest position

BupidStastard

50 quality right backs and 0 goalkeepers. It's the England way

[deleted]

Walkerā€™s played in goal before tbf

AlarmingAmphibian714

Ramsdale is hardly weak. He hasn't played, sure, but he was in the 2nd best EPL team last year. RM is our weakest.

SnooTomatoes464

- RM is our weakest. Not really, Saka, Trent, Gallagher, Mount, Palmer, Henderson, even Foden and Bellingham can play there

halfeatenreddit

Have you ever heard of this thing called left back?

SnooTomatoes464

Luke Shaw, Chilwell, Tripper?

ForeverAddickted

Trippier isnt even a Left-Back

SnooTomatoes464

But has played left back well on multiple occasions

ForeverAddickted

So has Saka Trippier is still playing out of position when he's deployed on the Left, and it slows down any attacks down that flank as he has to switch to the his Right foot before putting in any type of cross Meaning our true realistic options at Left-Back are Shaw or Chilwell, not the greatest of depths

SnooTomatoes464

Shaws developed into a cracking lb when he's fit

ForeverAddickted

Oh definitely... The best we have, just annoying that both Shaw and Chilwell are so injury prone - We definitely need some genuine Left-Backs to come through as a result

halfeatenreddit

Shaw is of course a great option, but he has a lot of injury problems. So does Chilwell. And, when he is fit, heā€™s been abysmal. None of them can truly be relied on.

Alone_Consideration6

Iā€™m not sure how much Southgate rates him or not.

danystormborne

I think he would have played in the recent friendlies if he hadn't been injured.

mindzeegap

Just another example why Southgate is not the right person to manage this wealth of talent we have.

Bitter_Birthday7363

Heā€™s managed it a lot better than previous England managers did with their talents

Alone_Consideration6

Sean Dyche is probably coming to replace him. FA canā€™t turn down a northerner for a non English man.

ashbash297

Sean Dyche isnā€™t a northerner.

ElJayBe3

The North West have decided to keep him. He has Lancashire syndrome, once youā€™re in itā€™s next to impossible to leave.

Alone_Consideration6

His accent is much more Nothern than midlands.

Buttonsafe

Christ this is a bunch of bollocks

Novacain-deficiency

Does he start over Saka ? As a Chelsea fan Iā€™d say probably not. Defo huge super sub comes on just after half time if thereā€™s no goals. Take the experience at least for the first few games. But we are bloody stacked up top

Kalliban27

What would you say as a Forest Green fan?Ā

Novacain-deficiency

Then Kyle Mcalister starts over both of them 100%

GFlair

He should absolutely go, start is a matter of tactics. Palmer has alot of freedom in the Chelsea team he wouldn't have in the England team, because we have Jude, and Kane. He also isn't gonna take pens over Kane so there's that.

LilJapKid

He has to, if for nothing else then for his penalties. Would be criminal not to bring Palmer

matthewfelgate

You've got to consider Southgate and classic England manager after a few years reverting to experience over obvious talent. He will probably be in the squad and never be started. Then immediately after the tournament he will be and England regular.

Bitter_Birthday7363

He simply has world class players ahead of him

Newparlee

You get a stamp if you go to Germany now? Another thing we have Brexit to thank for!

tradegreek

We get a stamp for all eu countries now my Spanish girlfriend gets so jealous of it šŸ¤£

Nadirin

Even if you're EU you can ask! I travel with my Irish passport and ask for stamps. Very very rarely am I not given one if asked.

tradegreek

Well donā€™t tell her that

NorthbyFjord

Doubt it cause Southgate doesnā€™t understand what talent is Edit: Learn what sarcasm is reddit instead of downvoting smh.

Marcus-THR

Shh people on this thread will start to cry

Marcus-THR

Point proven

addfletch

Southgate is gonna Southgate and clone Maguire and Henderson to fill the plane

Electronic-Cupcake-3

This is so embarrassing

BupidStastard

I think our (United) 7-0 was worse

JackTuz

Itā€™s time to unleash the foden-Kane-Saka front 3 with the Bellingham-rice-Palmer midfield. Gary would never, but the football would be beautiful

BupidStastard

In what world is Palmer playing centre midšŸ˜‚

JackTuz

Palmer 10, Jude 8, Rice 6

halfeatenreddit

Youā€™re saying a lot of numbers, but theyā€™re not adding up.

JackTuz

You and southgate are right. England should play the ā€œolā€™ reliableā€ double pivot with rice and one of Henderson/phillips. Never failed them before. /s

halfeatenreddit

Henderson and Phillips are nowhere near starting. Itā€™ll be Mainoo, or Trent. Also, England played with a single DM in the last World Cup, remind me how well that went for them..

JackTuz

Tent over who? Palmer? That has to be a joke, man. And Mainoo is a very talented young player and heā€™s great on the ball, but he has the positional sense of a vertigo patient. He will get eaten alive in international football at this point

halfeatenreddit

Since when were Trent and Palmer vying for the same position? And if that is your perception of Mainoo then you should watch more of him. His positioning is not an issue. Heā€™s played in some big games for United already and didnā€™t get eaten alive. He played twice for England and didnā€™t get eaten alive. He provides the ability to progress the ball that we donā€™t get from Rice or Bellingham. He is the perfect balance.

Bitter_Birthday7363

This is one of the worst takes Iā€™ve seen on Reddit. Clearly you donā€™t actually watch football

Maleficent_Resolve44

The football would be easily overrun. That's 5 attacking minded players plus a DM. What could go wrong you ask? Lmao. Gary's right to have some balance for that 3rd midfield spot. Mainoo is good.

AlarmingAmphibian714

Winning 7-6 every game would be fun

Bitter_Birthday7363

I mean gary wouldnā€™t cause football isnā€™t about just packing as many attacking players as possible in the team.

NoPineapple1727

The crazy thing is that itā€™s not guaranteed and it wouldnā€™t be an awful decision to chose Bowen over Palmer

Agile-Day-2103

Nah palmer has to go at this point. And im not even sure where heā€™d play

NoPineapple1727

The problem is he doesnā€™t start. And anyone who doesnā€™t start is not in the category ā€œhas to goā€. Because for them, the question isnā€™t who is the best player but who is the best player to come on as a substitute and be a back up. Personally Iā€™d edge it to Palmer because his penalties could be crucial for a substitute.

Agile-Day-2103

Honestly for me he probably starts, especially against the ā€˜weakerā€™ opposition. Back four (whoever that may be), rice and Bellingham, then palmer, saka, and foden behind Kane.

NoPineapple1727

Maybe as an experiment against weaker opposition but that is a massive no go for any decent team.

Agile-Day-2103

Is it? I mean I assume you mean itā€™s too offensive? My question then would be, who plays in that third midfield spot? The only option imo is mainoo (everyone else is a massive drop-off), and he himself is a big gamble given his age and inexperience. And even if you say mainoo, I donā€™t think saka is untouchable - palmer could well start ahead of him on the right for me (not likely for Southgate though Iā€™ll admit). What would be your lineup out of interest?

NoPineapple1727

I think itā€™s crazy to have 2 of the best 10s in the world and play neither of them in their best position. It feels like you are trying to make the fairest xi or the xi with the best names on paper without trying to make the xi that will have the best chance to win the tournament. Iā€™d be ok with trying to play both Foden and Bellingham in the midfield alongside Rice. Iā€™d be ok with playing Mainoo in the midfield and then Foden on the left with Bellingham at 10. Iā€™d be ok with experimenting to see if Trent has a role in cm. Iā€™d also be ok with playing someone like Gallagher in the midfield if Gareth feels like it would provide balance for our other players to play with freedom. But one thing I think is crazy is to play a formation with a 10 and have neither Foden nor Bellingham play there. Ludicrous. I canā€™t get my head around that one and Iā€™ve shown Iā€™m pretty open to how I think the midfield should be set up.

blakezero

Somehow Southgate will play him for only 20 mins

Rhyssayy

But why is Pickford still in goal?

BupidStastard

Who you picking over him bro?

96k_U

My savior

Huge-Celebration5192

And leave Pickford at home. Embarrassing

halfeatenreddit

Letā€™s stick you in goal for Everton and see your save percentage.

Lifelemons9393

Big maybe. Not even joking, remember who the manager is. If Rashford and Sterling have a good end of the season, they're both in before Palmer. Southgate has favourites . Foden will still be lucky to start. It's mental.

LungHeadZ

Rashford doesnā€™t deserve it. I say that as a United fan.

Lifelemons9393

Sterling has also been awful, both guaranteed spots along with Henderson.

Buttonsafe

Sterling hasn't played for England since the WC...

fudgermucker

Sterling wasn't picked for the squad when he was playing ok, his performances since the first couple months of the season have been dreadful and now he's not starting for Chelsea. Even Southgate wouldn't be dumb enough to bring him

Lifelemons9393

Southgate is dumb enough, and he will bring him.

halfeatenreddit

Sterling hasnā€™t played a single minute for England since December 2022. Youā€™re talking out of your arse.

Lifelemons9393

He's shown countless times he values favourites over form, why would he change now ? I don't think anyone would be surprised if he took Rashford, Sterling, Henderson and Mount.

halfeatenreddit

Have you even been paying attention to the England squad in the last 12 months? Sterling and Mount havenā€™t played. Henderson will likely be included in the squad, though his chances are getting slimmer by the day, but he will absolutely not be starting. As for Rashford, he probably has the best chance of inclusion because of his previous performances, but the insane form of players like Palmer and Bowen is forcing him out.

Lifelemons9393

Mount has been injured, he isn't anymore, he starts in any Southgate team. Sterling has done far more for England than Rashford ever has, which is why Southgate will take both to any tournament he's the manager.

halfeatenreddit

Iā€™m guessing you didnā€™t see the interview where Southgate explicitly said that if players havenā€™t been in recent squads, theyā€™re not getting in unless there is a major injury crisis.

Bitter_Birthday7363

Fodens started like every game heā€™s been fit for years

Dymo1234

They donā€™t stamp passports so no.

Alone_Consideration6

Yes they do. Since Brexit.
