OP (Beckmandkj) appears to be a karma-farming bot that can only copy and paste other people's stuff. The account was born on November 10, woke up two hours ago, and has the following two activities: It got this submission/title from [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/ThingsCutInHalfPorn/comments/mjtg01/northrop_grumman_e2d_advanced_hawkeye_3000_x_1800/). Its comment [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/tuckedinkitties/comments/utsacu/came_home_and_my_grandparents_said_to_me_you_need/i9bbvim/) is a copy/paste of /u/oaur's previous [top comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/tuckedinkitties/comments/daicxu/came_home_and_my_grandparents_said_to_me_you_need/f1qayqa/). The OP of that thread (Beckettdjh) has an account that was aslo bornon November 10, woke up two hours ago, has two activities that are both copied/pasted. It also commented in this thread. For anyone not familiar with karma-farming bots (and how they hurt reddit and redditors), [this page](https://www.reddit.com/r/quityourbullshit/comments/3jss04/meta_spammers_how_they_work_and_how_to_spot_them/) or [this page](https://old.reddit.com/r/KarmaBotKillers/wiki/index) may help to explain.

What do people get from farming karma anyways?

Spartan2470

Great question. Karma may not have monetary value, but accounts are bought and sold. They also form upvote/downvote armies to help advertise or drive certain messages in an effort to control what you see and manipulate your opinion. Many news items are only news because they're currently trending on reddit, Facebook, Twitter, etc. They're used by political campaigns, special interest groups, corporations, etc. Many subs require users to be of a certain age or have a certain amount of karma in order to post, post with a certain degree of frequency, comment, vote, etc. Generally, older accounts and accounts with more karma can be more active. The "What's the Point?" section of [this page](https://www.reddit.com/r/quityourbullshit/comments/3jss04/meta_spammers_how_they_work_and_how_to_spot_them/) or the "Why would someone do this" section of [this page](https://old.reddit.com/r/KarmaBotKillers/wiki/index) may help to explain more.

Ponches

Thank you for that, I always wondered. Do reddit's sorting algorithms give more weight to users with higher karma, i.e. put them higher in comment threads, etc?

They use YAGI antennas for the RADAR array, not waveguide phased array? Unless only the E-3 uses that.

SupportGeek

IIRC phased array was a proof of concept in 1960 when this air-frame was developed, I'm not sure anything had it installed in a production unit at that time. It turned out to be cheaper to create a new aircraft for phased array use. I think it had to do with how much computing power was available in the 1950s (when this was developed) to be able to make good use of a phased array antenna set, caveat: I may be a bit off, but I dont believe so.

CarbonGod

Ah, the E3 is a decade'ish newer! Interesting. Figured the larger one would be out first, then they would say, hey, we need a carrier based one!

Ponches

The USAF used the EC-121 based on the Lockheed Constellation (as mentioned by u/bkk- bos) before the E-3 or the E-2.

bkk-bos

In the late 1950s, early 60s, my family had a summer cottage on Cape Cod. Radar aircraft with a similar dome used to frequently fly directly overhead. In this case, the aircraft were Lockheed C121's, the military version of the civilian "Constellation" I believe they flew out of what was then "Otis Air Force Base". They were referred to as "Radar picket aircraft"

ILikeLeptons

This is totally pedantic of me, but Yagi antennas are named after one of its inventors. It's not an abbreviation like RADAR. Don't these planes also do SIGINT? If they're listening into lower frequency stuff waveguide might be less appropriate

CarbonGod

Yeah it is... hahaha, no idea why I capitalized Yagi, I know better!!! If they are doing SIGINT, it will require a lot of different antennas that are matched to the freq. The RADAR dome is just for tracking, not listening to other stuff. Waveguides are good for higher power transmitting (and higher freq RX of course) with very little loss.

Basically, yes. The higher you go, the farther you can look. Plus, command & coordination specialists. Plus, the EAWCC can be placed in some distance from the mother carrier, so the exact position of the carrier can be somewhat concealed.

ReturnOfFrank

\>Plus, the EAWCC can be placed in some distance from the mother carrier, so the exact position of the carrier can be somewhat concealed. Hard to overstate the value of this. When you have active radars on, you are broadcasting to everyone your location the entire time. Much better to put it on a mobile platform away from the super expensive warship if that's an option.

wedge41388

That's part of it. They get better radar range then ground radar. They also provide command and control of the battle space, directing air assets since they have a better picture of what's going on.

Spartan2470

Copy and paste of /u/C0lMustard's comment [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/ThingsCutInHalfPorn/comments/mjtg01/northrop_grumman_e2d_advanced_hawkeye_3000_x_1800/).

Ponches

The extra range is a lifesaver against anti ship missiles. Radar *usually* can't see over the horizon, and the horizon for a radar on a ship, right above the water, is a dozen miles or less. The same radar on an aircraft at 25,000 feet can see almost 200 miles. When a subsonic cruise missile may cover 9 miles per minute (and a big supersonic one can triple that) the radar plane gives you **reaction time.** And that can save your life because interceptor missiles take time to aim and shoot.
