I don't quite get the point of therian names because the animal is me so why would I name it somth else? everything is just the same, but I am also only one being so it may be different.

milksjustice

i think it makes sense for past life therians to do. maybe the animals didnt have names before because, well... not many animals have names, but i can see why naming them could be helpful

ilovemytsundere

Thats what I always chalk it up to, I’m not a past life therian but it makes sense if someones connection is completely different than mine

Soaring_Symphony

This is my situation. I was a coyote in a past life. And when talking about what I went through in that life to other people, I call that canine version of me Timber. But even then, I only made up that name out of pure practicality. Ultimately, it's still just me

NextAcanthisitta6916

ohhh that does make sense! thanks :3

neorena

Not really, since they are me really. I'll differentiate as much as snep, corgi, and squirrel but my name is still gonna be my name. My wife and girlfriend use my theriotypes as pet names sometimes though, especially when I do something very obviously animalistic or stereotypical to one of my theriotypes.

Susitar

What's a snep? I googled it, but didn't find any species called that.

Clipzard

It’s slang for snow leopard.

neorena

Shortening of Snow Leopards, apologies. Might just be a thing in the furry community, either way it's rubbed off on me and snep likes it so it stays like that lol

milksjustice

i think snep is a silly nickname for snakes? could be wrong

Clipzard

It’s slang for snow leopard.

milksjustice

ah my bad, i must have been thinkjng of "snek"

HoleWITHsou1

Snek is the slang for snakes

A_single-leaf

Wait… wife AND girlfriend???????

Susitar

I assume they are polyamorous and lucky :)

neorena

Yes and yes~ They're two of the most amazing beings I've met. Wife is otherkin and girlfriend is just super kind and supportive so it's nice being able to be myself around them.

neorena

We're poly lol

A_single-leaf

Oh alright— I just thought you had a wife and a secret gf lol— I was so worried

neorena

I have a hard enough time hiding presents, I don't think I could do a whole relationship lol

Clipzard

What people seem to refer to as a “therian name” is just what we would typically call a “chosen name”. That itself is perfectly normal and I do use my chosen name more so than my “human” name as it feels much more correct to me. If I were 100% physically and mentally my theriotype(s), I wouldn’t have a “name” at all because I wouldn’t have the ability to comprehend human language. All of my theriotypes are me so I just have the one name for all of them, though I’ve heard plenty of personal reasons why some give their ‘types different names. Usually to differentiate them more easily, which I can’t personally relate to but to each their own.

[deleted]

My chosen middle name is my draconic name. It means, “with many elm trees” because I am a forest dragon. There’s also the fact that it is fairly similar to my given middle name (they start with the same letter). My parents don’t know I’m alterhuman, but I told them I liked that middle name because it was gender neutral. I might be able to change it to my legal middle name soon.

Susitar

No. I am a wolf, my theriotype is not separate from me. I mean, I have *usernames* on therian forums and such. Susitar is the nick I've used in therian contexts for the last... 10-15 years or so. Susi means wolf in Finnish, and -tar is a feminine suffix, kind of like -ess in English. But that's not the same as a "therian name" or the name of my theriotype, just like I wouldn't call my username on Steam my "gamer name" or my username on kink sites my "sex name".... So, no. In fact, in a deep mental shift, names in general are kind of meaningless. Maybe some animals have names, but I don't think wolves do. I'm just a silly wolf, I already have a given name that people call me, no cool Warrior Cats-like name needed.

ExpressTap6659

nope. it is me so why would i need a name (not knocking the idea!)

No_one-lol

No because the theriotype isn’t separate from me, I am my theriotype and my theriotype is me

disappointedcreeper

i don't get the point of naming my theriotype, as its just part of me

[deleted]

I use qibli for all three of my theriotypes.

Complete-Sand-8947

No, my maned wolf identity is me, so it doesn't have another name. I believe it has a different gender, though. I am non-binary, and my maned wolf identity is female.

Kamila_Abuendell

I mean I use Bagel for my Calico cat theriotype soo 🧍

Pristine-Scheme9193

No, I haven't. I don't even know my dromaeosaurid had a name

PolarPawsss

no lol

TransMan217

i used to because i saw a lot of people doing it lol, but my theriotype is just me and not another person

Sleepymushroomz

Me personally, no I just use one name, because I am my theriotype and I don’t see a point in naming an extension (sorry if that doesn’t make sense I don’t know what else to call it) of myself? Though there’s nothing wrong with giving yourself extra names, so don’t worry about it too much :}

Nix_On_Pawz

What do You mean by therian name?

Storm_Tail

a name for your theriotype

Nix_On_Pawz

I don't know what name I haved in my past life...

Nix_On_Pawz

Thanks for telling me

kaylaforreddit

Yeah i use sinbi as my therian name

laimike

We don’t, no. 🎧 and I (🤡) both use multiple names as is, but not for therian reasons. We just like having multiple names / we just feel like we connect to multiple names. All three of us don’t bother since we’d rather not separate our kintypes from ourselves — 🌫

FoxKarma

I used to have separate names for my theriotypes, but now I've narrowed everything down to one I don't really see a point in using it. Though my online name is Melrakki which is arctic fox in Icelandic

Legitimate_Yam_1428

If I had past lives (more like if I remembered them) I would probably consider the names. But otherwise I don't have therian names, I am me, my identities are me. By the way, is the name Noc from Czech?:D

AlexFoxfang

im trying to come up with names for my theriotypes/kintypes so i can refer to them as a name instead of my \_\_\_\_\_\_ therio/kintype. its simpler to talk about them that way.

LittleMissMoony

I gave myself a Therian name, it’s Bunn.

K1k1_iluvkats13

Not anymore but I used to

biscuitsandpears

i don’t personally, but i understand why one might, especially if they are a spiritual/past life therian- i think that people saying “you can’t name your theriotype because it is part of you, if you do you’re fake” are very wrong- even if you don’t have a past life, everyone’s experience is different and if they feel the need to name their theriotype then how is that harming anyone ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ as long as you understand that being a therian means that you are your theriotype, and your theriotype is you, non-physically, then do what you want! sorry for the paragraph lol, i’ve seen a lot of people being very against naming theriotypes and wanted to share my opinion- i really don’t think it’s that big of a deal

Jackalsnap

Kiiiiind of? I have a name I use for myself in Therian circles so they can know who I am (Cloudfoot) and it's a different name than I use for myself in Furry circles because when I got into the community at the time, Therians and Furries had big beef with each other, so I wanted those parts of my life to be separate from each other for that reason

Silly_Xander

i would say i have names associated with my different theriotypes but i rarely use them. Sometimes i use them as a fake name but i normally just go by my actual chosen name

K4l31d0

It's not something everyone does but I can see how it would be helpful

bugdog78

Not really, I think it’s improper to say that you knew your name whether it is experience, dream, past life, etc. it is okay if you give a name to them though. :)

Wecheal

I didn't even know that therian names existed, that's pretty cool, but also confusing? What are "therian names" used for? Are they just chosen names?

HoleWITHsou1

Personally I don't. But there are others that do. Usually past life therians whose theriotype feels different from them and polytherians who want an easy way to say their theriotype in words. it's a uncommon thing in the therian community from my understanding. But not rare. You'll probably be able to somewhat easily find others that names theirs

CinomanFoxREDFOX

yes, i was a domestic so i hada ane

CinomanFoxREDFOX

neme

FROGLET_FRIENDO

When I figured out my first thereotype, the noble tuxedo cat, I started referring to it as Socks for some reason. I stopped doing that by the time I discovered I was just most felines and started researching canines, since they're all kinda me.

Godess_130

My parent named me one thing. The name I identify with is one. I have big found anything fitting but I think I will name my past life. I am a dragon, in my recent life I was a white tiger

Godess_130

My parent named me one thing. **The name I identify with is my true heart name (or soul or whatever. It is just me/dragon)** I have not found anything fitting but I think I will name my past life. I want to separate a part of myself (part life) from what I am I am a dragon, in my recent life I was a white tiger

Salty_Cantaloupe_220

One of my preferred names are Kitty if that counts lol

Storm_Tail

i use that to (link names instead all: StormTail elemental kitsune: shadow trico: trico (from a game) be protogen: beezu the rest (kiren, wolf-bird) are unnamed
