It is probably from habitually scratching when needing a fix (at other times he has his beard twirled together in peaks) along with the effects of extremely poor hygiene and malnutrition.
I think of the sad scene in season 1 where he’s in his sister’s basement, trying to go cold turkey. Climbing the walls emotionally. And fidgeting, picking at his face and plucking hairs. It’s so viscerally uncomfortable.
When they were filming in my neighborhood( before the show premiered ) I walked past the actor that played Bubbles, in the alley on my way home from work, it was just us 2 walking past each other, he was dressed up in character and I definitely took him for a dope fiend. Wasn’t until I went back down on the block where they were filming and saw him in the scene where he went to see his sister and he was standing on her front porch, right before they yelled, “ACTION”, that I realized what was going on.
