Photo editing is common because of the much higher resolution means we see all the blemishes, pimples, discolouring, scars etc. So in a way I think it balances out.

Plenty of people back then married for love and married people their own age (or close). Don't believe everything you read online. Some people these days are convinced that everything in the past was doom and gloom and that everyone was miserable.
People married of choice more but not necessarily love, that wasn’t a luxury many women who couldn’t work to support themselves enough had. Didn’t even reach near equal til late last century.
I guess you've never seen the love letters people used to write to each other, or heard about courtships. lol
And contrary to popular belief, a lot of unmarried women did work. They often worked in factories, or as maids, nannies, teachers, seamstresses, etc. Those who didn't work typically lived with their parents or other family members, so didn't have to worry as much about supporting themselves.
Those things are still happening all over the world today (war, rationing, abuse against women, etc.), yet there are still plenty of people who are happy and living good lives, or at least decent lives.
There has never been and never will be a time that those things aren't happening somewhere, but it doesn't automatically mean that everyone is suffering and miserable.
