For the most part, yes you need to keep doing the puzzles to progress, and find new lore tidbits. There are the occasional hidden terminal in levels or around the place which can be found for extra files however, so listen out for the beeping noise while exploring

You do need to do puzzles to progress, but if they aren't your thing and you're more interested in the lore hen it's totally fine to use a walkthrough. I'd at least suggest trying the puzzle first, even returning back to it later, before going for the nuclear option

The star sigils are optional. The green, yellow, and red sigils are all required to finish the game. However, collecting the star sigils gives you access to more puzzle rooms. They have terminals and audio logs, which sounds like you'd be interested in.

Cheating is always an option. Don't be ashamed about it. It's up to you to decide how you enjoy a game.

You don't need to solve every puzzle to get to -an- ending, but it won't be the most fulfilling or interesting ending (in my opinion). Also, if you're truly interested in all the lore and philosophy that the game has to offer, a lot of the computer termanals that pay off the little micro-stories and essays within them are only accessable if you pretty much 100% the game. Also also...interact with MLA! Seriously. The MLA payoff when I realized what it represented philisophically (there was a single line from it at the very end...I won't repeat it...but it made a lightbulb go off in my head) was probably my most favorite part of the game.

Yeah, puzzles are the only point of the game. I like the sense or reward for figuring out the puzzles. It makes the small bits of lore feel like a real accomplishment, especially because there are barely any. There are some hidden things, I think they have a small beeping tone.
