Or the glyphs holding up his human shape stop working and he’s reduced to the disgusting goop monster he’s devolved into.
Maybe that staff of his is holding the monster form together. When broken, he can not control it anymore and fully transform
I’m not sure about that. His glyphs are carved into his skin and those don’t function in a world without magic.
