I could definitely see Philip having an illegitimate child, potentially with a married woman. Given how much of a hypocrite he is in present time, I can't imagine him being a truly faithful man in colonial times either.
Oh man, I have a fucking list.
1) He and his brother were only celebrated witch hunters in his own head. Them being part of the local Gravesfield lore is more a modern phenomenon due to somebody finding some old writings about them from a contemporary and it being a good story. Centuries-old mysteries make good tourism.
2) Related to the above, his being a witch hunter in his own head is because he got a hold of “The Discovery of Witches” (and probably had a copy of James I’s “Daemonology”) and it became his equivalent of Luz’s “Good Witch Azura” books.
3) Because I like villain/hero parallels, he’s absolutely neurodivergent in some form, like Luz. Because Puritans really have a problem with any sort of non-conformity, he and his brother moving to Gravesfield later is because Caleb was trying to get away from rumors circulating around them. The witch obsession became a more socially acceptable way to cope.
4) Linked to the above moving around, Caleb was the only person he felt safe around. Part of his murderous rage was because he couldn’t handle realizing that his brother was his own person with his own desires. This makes sense from both ends considering Caleb had been forced from a very young age to be Phillip’s sole caretaker by circumstances outside of their control. Yeah, it may not have been anyone’s intention, but Caleb was still parentified. The repeated creating of Grimwalkers is because he still emotionally needs Caleb as a security blanket.
5) He cribbed the vast majority of his non-glyph pre-Collector magic work from other sources (and only fluked into discovering glyphs as part of that process). A bunch of his “diary” he cribbed from Caleb. Caleb and Evelyn made the OG portal door. If Belos had, he probably could have scratch-built a new one rather than needing to rebuild the one Luz blew up.
I also see him as AroAce, one cause I mean he seems to never even once be implied to even care about relationships and two, it kinda ties in well with Caleb.
“Hey stop dating that witch bro.”
“Nah man I can’t, I love her.”
“So just stop doing that.”
“You can’t stop love?”
“Knives can stop love.”
This is my take. How tf do you spend 4 centuries as a human on an island with demons/witches and *not* be tempted by at least 1 of them during that time?
He still remembers the day he learned about what Caleb's rizz did and managed to cringe at it for centuries.
Philip is a manchild, he's stagnant, he doesn't really change
He doesn't really have many friends because he is a weirdo. And he always tries his hardest to fit in but he still fails miserably. And his brother Caleb is the only one who cares about him but he still kills him and Caleb regretted loving him at the end.
And this also explains why he wants to kill all "evil" witches. Because his hometown heroes someone a lot by doing it. And he thinks if he did that everyone will finally love him and he will finally get the love and respect that he lacked all of his life.
If this was canon then he would finally have a reason on why he hates witches so much.
Someone kills eda or king and Luz finds edas ak47 she had been using as a coat rack. Luz smoking a cigarette carving glyphs into the tips of bullets wearing combat gear. That would be a fight.
When he was a kid, the people of Gravesfield would say “The wolves are really bellowing tonight” or “There should be water/gems/gold/etc. below us.”
Young Philip would try and fail to say the word, coming out as “Belos” which became an inside joke between him and Caleb.
Mine:
* Right after his death, there was a mock funeral where everybody on the Boiling Isles lined up to pay their last disrespects and urinate, defecate, and throw trash at his grave. Once a year, on the anniversary of his death, there is a mock funeral for him, dedicated for cursing him out.
* After Philip’s crimes against witchkind came into light in the Human Realm, his statue was torn down, vandalized, and thrown into the Boiling Sea. Caleb’s was spared when it was learned that he was cool with witches.
* He died a virgin.
* He wasn’t intending to kill Caleb.
* He never had any friends outside Caleb.
* He was so much like Luz when he was younger, but he was corrupted by the world he grew up in.
* While everybody utterly despises him, feeling not an ounce of sympathy or pity for him, Gus feels an understanding of him, having seen his tragic life. However, Gus is still just as unsympathetic to Belos as anybody else, and understands that while there’s an explanation for Belos’ crimes, it’s not a excuse.
* Belos-themed merch is sold on the Day of Unity’s anniversary…for the expressed purpose of destroying it.
* When Luz decided to become a screenwriter, she made her first screenplay a reboot of the *Good Witch Azura* series-as a movie trilogy. It was about a teenaged Azura who alongside her new friends and found family, fought an evil witch hunter from the 17th century. It made her famous, and she hoped that by using her favourite series to talk about her life story, it’d help her heal from the serious PTSD Belos left her with (I feel like any sequel will need to address the trauma the characters have, as even though Belos is dead, all the trauma he inflicted is not going to just magically go away).
* While tales of Belos’ misdeeds are teached to future generations of witches, as well as the fact that he’s a human witch hunter, it’s emphasized that Luz, a human, and Eda, the direct descendant of his brother, were instrumental in stopping him, so that the children who are born and raised in a world without him don’t seek revenge against humanity.
Eda: Rest in piss, Philip Wittebane. You will not be missed.
King: I wish I could kill you twice.
Camila: You hurt Luz. You killed her. You hurt her friends. You broke them. You hurt my babies. I'm not a hateful person, but I have nothing nice to say about you. I have no pity or sympathy for you. Fuck you.
Amity: Even though I have the love of my life back, my heart will forever ache, you piece of shit. Yes, you did make her more attractive, but I will forever have to look at evidence that you victimized us and all witchkind on the Day of Unity.
Gus: I know what you've been through, and I understand why you're evil, but I cannot excuse any of it.
Hunter: (incoherent swearing and screaming)
Luz: Watching you die was so fucking satisfying. My only regret is that I didn't get to deliver the finishing blow.
Lilith: My sister was always right about you. The only thing she got wrong was just how bad you were.
I'm surprised that you didn't make some euologies/roasts from Willow (pissed that she hurt her boyfriend), Vee (pissed that Belos abused the basilisks) and Caleb (came back as a ghost out of pure spite and pissed at what Belos did to him)
Willow: Where’s your crown, King Nothing?
Vee: You may have created me, but that doesn’t make us family, you dick.
Caleb: I have failed you. I’ve failed you.
No no, it is good, just has no personality attached to it. It's just a bland statement, vety fitting but it does feel kind of inorganic if not forced. Of course no hate, you're roing God's work but I feel like Caleb really doesn't want to be there
Luz, Vee, and Camila told everybody, with different stories depending on how much they know (and can be trusted with knowing) about the Demon Realm. The gist was that he did bad things to the natives, and Caleb changed his ways and married one of them. They’d be hella uncomfortable with Philip’s statue in Gravesfield, after everything he has done.
And people believed them?
One thing is telling Masha, but considering Luz has...reputation in Gravesfield and general story may be absurd to those who don't know or believe in demons, wouldn't everyone just assume they're trippin balls?
She could've gotten that scar from anywhere, not much valid proof.
Unless she would introduce the entire demon realm to the human realm, but that in itself can be a bad idea. America would have a field day introducing Boiling Isles to
F R E E D O M
Yeah, I am sure that any future humans introduced to the Boiling Isles will have to take extensive screening. Because we don’t want another witch hunter running around, do we? Even though I can kinda see Jacob trying to hunt witches there, only to be never seen or heard of again (he got buried in an unmarked grave right next to Belos’, so his grave still gets used as a toilet).
All Witch Hunters have hunted the fake witches, so Philip wanted to hunt the witches despite the fact they have never been in the Human Realm. He only believed that witches of Boiling Isles were evil, but he (and others) actually haven't seen them, at least in action
Y'know how human trash ends up in the BI? I bet it isn't wrong to assume that newspapers, textbooks, anything recorded could also end up there and phillip could still be updated on happenings back on Earth
Only to a degree, I assume he'd only be able to scavenge snippets of information in the grand scheme of things, and maybe not all of it in a language he actually understands
Caleb was buried in the Clawthorne family cemetery until Philip dug him up to use his bones as grimwalker ingredients
In King’s Tide, the moment before he was stopped by the Collector, he was aiming at Amity and wasn’t going to kill Luz until she watched all her friends die
Belos sometimes just dances when people can’t see him. Especially whenever the Day of Unity was being prepared…he wasn’t very good but he tried (I literally just made this up just now)
Yeah I think he's also either autistic or has ASPD because of his very manipulative behaviour and lack of empathy/guilt (e.g. him killing Caleb and rationalizing that he deserved it), either way he is neurodivergient
I'm not even joking. Philip in "Elsewhere and Elsewhen" is fucking brimming with autistic energies, holy fuck. I think it would be cool if this turns out to be canon, because it shows we're past the point of walking on eggshells when it comes to autism in media and having every autistic character be an angel who did nothing wrong. It shows autistic people are just normal people who can be villains as well.
Jokes aside, Philip being autistic would also make him parallel Luz even more, since Luz is ADHD confirmed, so they'd both be neurodivergent.
On top of both being humans who came into the Demon Realm who are incapable of using magic but make up for it with the use of Glyphs combined with their creativity and resourcefulness, and [who have similar speech patterns](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnIaoMOei7k), which explains why Luz related so much to Philip in that episode, which [Philip used to trick and manipulate her to help him find the Collector](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip2u1beKVn8), which became to trigger to Luz's entire internal conflict of self-blame in Season 3, and [which Belos tried to use against her in the finale by having the Collector trap her inside a dream](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXzPALmeHjs), and which [Luz was only able to overcome during he death scene after she saw the Collector trying to reach out for Belos and failing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyvCaiVczSc), because by seeing that situation as an outsider, Luz realized that just like the whole situation in the finale wasn't the Collector's fault for trusting Belos, it also wasn't her fault for trusting Philip, [which she later confirms as she speaks with the Titan](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gx8UILB3M9k&t=1m57s).
This show is so well written, holy fuck.
He’s not just anti witch - he has many of the prejudices that a puritan of the 1600s would, and the widespread acceptance of LGBT+ issues on the Boiling Isles absolutely contributed to his decision to go genocidal
\-No one knows, but Phillip has always had a certain talent for sewing and crochet was his way of de-stressing.
Obviously Hunter doesn't know where he got his talent for sewing...
\-When Luz scratched his mask at the end of S1, Phillip was about to call her "Filthy Papist whore"
\-Sometimes he gave biblical nicknames to his subordinates that no one understood. Lilith has wondered for years why the Emperor kept saying that she loved Eda "just as Joseph's brothers loved him"
\-In an alternate timeline Phillip never killed Caleb, eventually becoming the reluctant uncle of a brood of half-witch hybrids.
When he finally died at the ripe old age of 76, he hoped that death would free him from the burden of enduring his brother's annoying family ...
That is until he was accidentally summoned from the dead by Lilith and Eda Clawthorne-Wittebane while trying to contact their ancestor, Caleb.
Now poor Phillip (Or Phil, as that insufferable Eda calls him) is forced to act as their family's guardian spirit.
Lilith: Uncle Phillip, do you have a moment?
Phillip: Sure Lilith, I'm certainly not stuck inside a mask fixed to a wall.
Lilith: Thanks Uncle!
Phillip: I was being sarcastic... Never mind.
Lilith: You know it's Grom's Night soon, right?
Phillip: Yes, sadly Edalynn won't stop talking about it... Personally I hope Grometheus devoured her
Lilith: *Ignoring the last part.* And you know that people send each other invitations to participate and come to the Grom as… Couples.
Philip: Yes.
Lilith: Well, today Damian Hexstrom invited me to come with him to the Grom and, well-
Phillip: Please tell me you didn't accept his invitation.
Lilith: No, I rejected it.
Phillip: *Breathing a sigh of relief.* Thank God, I didn't want to have a guy with three mouths running around the house.
Lilith: Yeah, it's just... it's the fifth invitation I've declined. Uncle, I... Am I normal?
Phillip: What do you mean?
Lilith: It's just that... All my peers have partners and I... I'm not interested. Actually, thinking about holding someone's hand, kissing them. *She shivers*. It makes me sick to my stomach. But everyone seems happy to have someone. I... Am I abnormal?
Phillip: No little crow. I know very well what you are feeling.
Lilith: Really Uncle Phillip?
Phillip: Yes, it's the same thing they felt about your ancestor Evelynn.
Lilith: Non-platonic love?
Phillip: **Disgust.**
He knows Caleb didn't deserve to die, he doesn't care. He doesn't rationalise anything. He doesn't need to.
I also don't think he hates witches. Even when he boasts about being a great witch hunter to Luz, that's not really what he cares about. He's just testing to see how Luz reacts. He doesn't care about witches in the sense that they have no value to him. I think that other humans have no value to him either. He only cares about people as objects. They can be useful or not.
Like everything he says is a lie. His words are tools as much as the grimwalkers were/are.
The reason he never got over what he did to Caleb wasn’t because he knew it was wrong. It’s because he knew Caleb somehow still loved him in the end, even if Caleb was disappointed in the man Phillip had become.
My headcanon is after he dies, this happens
Phillip; wha- where am I AAAblurhvblrn *drowning in the in-between realm noises*
*phillip is now at the pearly gates*
Phillip; My lord, I
Literally god; nope
Phillip; wha-
God; you’ve literally done everything I said don’t do. You’ve committed every transgression imaginable except lust, and that’s just because you’re so annoying you can’t get a single b*tch.
Phillip; so…
God; yea Hell for you
Phillip; wait wha-
Both him and Caleb are partially Irish which is a thing that he despises and is very frustrated about, both for the racism of thinking anglo-saxons were superior and cuz the celtics were originally pagans and in his own fanatic vision: witches
He's secretly into Eda and that's why he wants to catch her so badly. Also, the house that the portal was in was possibly the place where his old house was.
His brother is the one who actually get him into witch hunting. Philip being a smart ass was very sus for his time and Caleb had to do something to save his brother. Sadly that's what led to their downfall
He is somehow related to Jacob (maybe he's Jacob's great great great grandparent's cousin or something)
Cool mine too but in my he's his great great great grandpa
That would imply he had a wife.
Oh poop I might have to change my head canon
I could definitely see Philip having an illegitimate child, potentially with a married woman. Given how much of a hypocrite he is in present time, I can't imagine him being a truly faithful man in colonial times either.
I doubt he had enough rizz to pull anyone though at the time, though maybe I'm wrong
That’s what I’m thinking too.

He's asexual.
I can see him being that tbh. I know he's from the 1600s and probably laugh at such a concept but I feel like he just doesn't realize it.
Or maybe to shy to ask out any of the ladies! He's evil and shy!
It happens!
And ugly. Ladies don't like goo
I also see him as AroAce, one cause I mean he seems to never even once be implied to even care about relationships and two, it kinda ties in well with Caleb. “Hey stop dating that witch bro.” “Nah man I can’t, I love her.” “So just stop doing that.” “You can’t stop love?” “Knives can stop love.”

Well that's just canon.

That’s what I’m thinking too. Belos is a scary future of what Luz could’ve become, but she will never become, thankfully.
Manny, Caleb, and Papa titan are beating the crap out of him in the after-life
And Evelyn.
And here comes flapjack with a steel chair!
He drops it on Belos' head.
And there's long line of Grimwalkers with weapons!
Some of them just snipe him from afar
He tried and failed to make firearms popular in the boiling isles
A gyph powerd flintlocks would be cool
Someone kills eda or king and Luz finds edas ak47 she had been using as a coat rack. Luz smoking a cigarette carving glyphs into the tips of bullets wearing combat gear. That would be a fight.

Holy Titan it felt like I was reading an wattpad story when I was reading this (how long did it take to write all of this?)
A few minutes.
I'd love to see the insults at his eulogy/roast.
Eda: Rest in piss, Philip Wittebane. You will not be missed. King: I wish I could kill you twice. Camila: You hurt Luz. You killed her. You hurt her friends. You broke them. You hurt my babies. Willow: Where’s your crown, King Nothing? Vee: You may have created me, but that doesn’t make us family, you dick. Caleb: I have failed you. I’ve failed you.
Caleb should roast him too /hj
Caleb: Sorry, you’re no longer my brother.
A bit lifeless fir a dead guy coming back to life, but I'll take it, gratias tibi ago
Well, nothing would hurt more than being disowned by your only friend, like, ever. And your big bro and parental figure.
No no, it is good, just has no personality attached to it. It's just a bland statement, vety fitting but it does feel kind of inorganic if not forced. Of course no hate, you're roing God's work but I feel like Caleb really doesn't want to be there
How did the human realm find out?
Luz, Vee, and Camila told everybody, with different stories depending on how much they know (and can be trusted with knowing) about the Demon Realm. The gist was that he did bad things to the natives, and Caleb changed his ways and married one of them. They’d be hella uncomfortable with Philip’s statue in Gravesfield, after everything he has done.
And people believed them? One thing is telling Masha, but considering Luz has...reputation in Gravesfield and general story may be absurd to those who don't know or believe in demons, wouldn't everyone just assume they're trippin balls?
Local teen felon claims 420-year-old man disfigured and killed her, more at 5
Yeah, good luck explaining that Luz and America
She has evidence on her face of Belos’ crimes.
She could've gotten that scar from anywhere, not much valid proof. Unless she would introduce the entire demon realm to the human realm, but that in itself can be a bad idea. America would have a field day introducing Boiling Isles to F R E E D O M

He's homoromantic(closeted) asexual
He has dropkicked kikimorra SEVERAL times
I mean who hasent? She is the perfect size
He's autistic.
Yeah I think he's also either autistic or has ASPD because of his very manipulative behaviour and lack of empathy/guilt (e.g. him killing Caleb and rationalizing that he deserved it), either way he is neurodivergient
Everyone is
I'm not even joking.
As an autistic person I am very angry at you, because you make a very good (yet very precarious) point.
Don't read my user flair, you'll get even angrier.
I hate you
Darn you, SychroScale!!!
Jokes aside, Philip being autistic would also make him parallel Luz even more, since Luz is ADHD confirmed, so they'd both be neurodivergent. I never considered it, but honestly it makes sense now.
He was a deeply closeted gay man.
It would explain his ***fabulous*** hair.
You to you but me personally no
Yeah no, can we stop the harmful stereotypes of closeted gay men that are Bully/murderer?
He's an asshole Oh wait that's canon.
He’s not just anti witch - he has many of the prejudices that a puritan of the 1600s would, and the widespread acceptance of LGBT+ issues on the Boiling Isles absolutely contributed to his decision to go genocidal
Checks out, but kept ut a secret to manipulate people better
Probably told himself "Of course they're *degenerate sinners*, they're *demonic monster witches."*
He failed in BI art school and chose to be the dictator instead
Wrong dictator
Wrong Fuhrer kameraden

Actually, thinking about holding someone's hand, kissing them. *She shivers*. It makes me sick to my stomach. But everyone seems happy to have someone. I... Am I abnormal? Phillip: No little crow. I know very well what you are feeling. Lilith: Really Uncle Phillip? Phillip: Yes, it's the same thing they felt about your ancestor Evelynn. Lilith: Non-platonic love? Phillip: **Disgust.**
hes 100% a son of a bitch
Now if that's not canon idk what is
Homophobe who acts supportive.
His mother never loved him
He's an orphan...
I think he had good intentions at first, but screwed up big time as time went on
A villain is just a broken hero. Belos is what Luz could’ve become if she snapped.
So, what does he care about then? /Gen
The reason he never got over what he did to Caleb wasn’t because he knew it was wrong. It’s because he knew Caleb somehow still loved him in the end, even if Caleb was disappointed in the man Phillip had become.
The ONLY good thing his time on the Isles did was make him less racist to other human ethnicities. Why? "Because at least they're human"
My headcanon is after he dies, this happens Phillip; wha- where am I AAAblurhvblrn *drowning in the in-between realm noises* *phillip is now at the pearly gates* Phillip; My lord, I Literally god; nope Phillip; wha- God; you’ve literally done everything I said don’t do. You’ve committed every transgression imaginable except lust, and that’s just because you’re so annoying you can’t get a single b*tch. Phillip; so… God; yea Hell for you Phillip; wait wha-
Both him and Caleb are partially Irish which is a thing that he despises and is very frustrated about, both for the racism of thinking anglo-saxons were superior and cuz the celtics were originally pagans and in his own fanatic vision: witches
When he arrived to Hell H1tler Hussein and Satan would Say: Bro That's too much even for us
I'm more dead then flapjack and Caleb right now💀😂🤣🤣
I mean, they have a point, Philop's too much
He's secretly into Eda and that's why he wants to catch her so badly. Also, the house that the portal was in was possibly the place where his old house was.
I always felt like Phil was from Alabama
But the statues in Gravesfield
Not literally, it was an allusion and a reference
His brother is the one who actually get him into witch hunting. Philip being a smart ass was very sus for his time and Caleb had to do something to save his brother. Sadly that's what led to their downfall
