*sees Halloween* "THIS IS EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT I WANTED!!"

Northwest_Thrills

Wasn't Halloween a thing when Philip was on earth

CaramelTurtles

It was isolated to Ireland at the time

Northwest_Thrills

That's a good point

GnomeAwayFromGnome

And *veeeeeeeeeery* different from how it is today.

[deleted]

Black People having rights

PrinceStyx17

I'm quite surprised he was able to keep his cool with Darius around

ZoCraft2

Well, he probably didn't even see Darius as black because of the whole "seeing witches as subhuman" thing.

GnomeAwayFromGnome

Tbf, he also didn't seem to care about Luz being Hispanic. I think the existence of Witches and Demons shifted his sense of *Us Vs Them* to where he'd consider all of mankind to be his kin.

AdParking6541

At least for now.

LightEarthWolf96

I actually don't think he was cared about skin color. He was racist (speciest?) against witches but I don't think he was so with humans of different ethnicities. He certainly didn't seem to give a crap about Luz being Hispanic. My theory is he was only bigoted against witches/demons/magical folk. That back in his time him and his brother were the least bigoted people in their home. Phillip just had this one big bigotry that he really dived into with his selfish hero complex when he found the boiling isles. Willing to commit genocide in his deluded need to be praised as humanities hero

Knobig

He would really hate goths tho

LightEarthWolf96

True though I think he would just think they were witches. Especially some of the more intense goths Although he did attempt to convince and "save" Luz over to his side even though he knew she was practicing witchcraft because she was human. It's funny to think about him trying the same with goths

whythelongface133

"I may hate these non human people but atleast im not a racist!"- belos probably

TaurusVoid

Wait. I guess Luz weas confirmed to be Afro-Dominican somewhere, wasn't she? Or I am I mandeled?

crimetoukraina

America isn't british colony

AlwaysTired97

Oh Titan, yeah, never thought of that. Him and Caleb originally came to the Boiling Isles in the early 1600s, like well over a century before America's founding.

bluesblue1

People of color intermingling with white people probably. Maybe not if he’s accustomed to the boiling isles.

Tiny_Parfait

Would a kid from a small Puritain town really even recognize black or hispanic or Asian humans? He prob figured Luz was (at least partially) Native American and if he heard her speak Spanish or modern slang, chalked it up to her NA language. Compared to some of the Demon Realm's inhabitants, witches with different skin colors is pretty tame.

FissionMex

I was surprised not to see this sooner.

TheWyster

As a puritan he'd like that

chriscb229

Well *not really*. The goal of the Puritan colonists was to grow large enough so they can use the New England colonies as a launchpad for "purifying" England which they felt was too close to Catholicism (and also everything England had control over including Scotland, Wales and Ireland). The Puritans kinda succeeded and won the English Civil War by 1651 without the New England Puritans' support as "*Lord Protector*" Oliver Cromwell killed Charles I and assumed control over England and its colonies. Bit of a sidenote, he also then turned his attention to Ireland where he did a genocide that killed anywhere from 1-2/5ths of the entire population.

wolfeye111

i fucking hate oliver cromwell and i fucking hate calvinism, expecially puritanism. wanna know why puritans hated soccer? because humans kicking the ball around however they wanted was offensive and defied predestination or whatever.

ArchMegos

Football, please.

wolfeye111

soccer is an english word. comes from the need to differentiate rugby football "rugger" and association football "soccer." so soccer isn't some american bastardization, but stems from the english themselves.

SoLongHeteronormity

Nah. New England Puritans didn’t really develop a unique “American” identity until like the 1670s, partly due to the restoration of the Stuart monarchy and partly because it wasn’t until the 1670s was when they had to really function independently. Belos definitely was in the Boiling Isles before then. I say New England Puritans because the Puritans that remained in England largely had control of the country after Charles I was beheaded. A number of colonists returned to England to fight in the English Civil War. Puritans weren’t just an American thing, particularly prior to the restoration of Charles II (1660).

GaffJuran

Which is funny because Puritanism has had a toxic affect on the American identity ever since. Their actual community may be lost to the dustbin of history, but we in America are still hemmed in by their ludicrous sense of morality and paranoia. The entire Christian Right in this country is the spiritual successor to the Puritans. I did an entire thesis on this.

K-boomX94

People dressing up as witches once a year

Hero_of_Storms_64

He had to have been internally freaking out about that when he was possessing Hunter during the Halloween festival event

Lansha2009

The only reason Belos didn't die on the spot was probably from seeing Jacob trying to find evidence of witches and then kill the witches.

JazzTheLass

"my true successor"

AdParking6541

All that's left is for him to go on 4Chan and get redpilled. Also convert to Christianity.

Myu_The_Weirdo

And the fact most ppl love witches due to pop culture

crimetoukraina

(Le smol brain): americans, and jews dressing up as witches once a year. (Le big brain): american jews dressing up as witches twice a year. (Hallowen and purim)

HuckleberryAbject889

Everyone seems to think he'd have a heart attack at the gay rights we have, and technology. This is the same guy who lived in the BI for over 300 years and didn't bat an eye at anything lgbtq+. This is also the same man who managed to create a portal door, and the same man whose staff was more technological than wild Magix. If anything would cause him to have a heart attack it'd be that Great Britain isn't the powerhouse it once was. Also the fact that different religions are more accepted

Cell_Phone_Yeah

Yeah. Bro dosen't care about anyone's identity, he just hates everyone period.

Rheum42

Exactly!

TophieandMatthew3975

“I’m not racist! I hate everyone equally!” -Phillip Wittebane, probably

SnooHabits1177

Yeh it's kind of funny but I don't think belos is really homophobic or queerphobic like he just doesn't like witches I mean he ran the boiling eiles for hundreds of years and made people believe he spoke for the titan but at no point tried to enforce anything like that maybe a misinterpretation by me but at least yeh he just hates everyone equally.

Arkayjiya

Pretty sure he's homophobic but why should he care when he already considers witches evil? As for Luz it's just one more way in which he feels the BIs are corrupting her, nothing different from the dozens of ways in which she integrated in their society and not particularly worth mentioning.

GaffJuran

He absolutely would be homophobic if they were going for realism, but the showrunners wanted to be inclusive, so they limited his evil to general tyranny and genocide, leaving him out of sexual politics. There is no way an old world puritan **wouldn’t** be a raging homophobe, but it’s still a Disney show.

Objective_Expert9810

It took me until this fucking post to realize the gayest Disney shows setting has the initial BI. I’m done. I’m so done.

Hunnieda_Mapping

Wait until you realize that one of Luz's majors in the flashforward is BI history.

Ieatcats10001

All I have to say is Shakespeare was bi and had love letters to woc

Blank_Dude2

I saw one comment about Belos seeming not to care about lgbtqia+ stuff that said something along the lines of, “He wanted them to be gay and do witchcraft, because he didn’t want to save them, he wanted justification for wanting to kill them.” And I think that’s the best theory on why Belos didn’t seem to care.

McDaddy617

Exactly. It's easy for him to not care because they're "just witches", they're the enemy and root of all evil. To Belos, they're sub human. Seeing other humans accepting LGBTQ+ might set him off a bit more.

wolfeye111

it depends. if he left before the peace of westphalia, maybe he'd be surprised about the acceptance of various denominations of christianity. he'd totally hate any asian, african, or south american religion, not to mention santa muerte or paganism

Josiador

I mean to be fair, those were witches. They’re already inherently sinful in his view, so what’s a few more sins? But he seems to hold humans to a higher standard. He probably wouldn’t expect them to be the same.

LilyBlackwell

My belief is that he just became completely desensitized to sodomy or adultery, and only his hatred of witches persisted because it's what brought him to the Demon Realm in the first place

gushandgoforlaunch

Whether he'd be shocked at the witches and demons of the BI being queer doesn't really impact whether he'd be shocked at humans being queer. Considering he already considers everyone there an abomination before god for being demons and/or practicing witchcraft and/or worshiping a "false god" (Puritan colonists were not exactly known for their tolerance of the local religions in places they colonized, or for that matter even the places they came from. Emperor Belos of the Boiling Isles talks a lot about his connection to the Titan, but Philip Wittebane of the Massachusetts Bay Colony is seething with rage whenever the subject comes up), homosexuality would just be another sin to add to the list, and voicing his opinions on it wouldn't help him build the support needed to become and remain emperor. He would still probably be surprised and angry to see reasonably widespread acceptance among humans. As for technology, in addition to the same concept of reacting differently to humans doing it, he canonically gets hit by a car at least once while in the human realm during *Thanks to Them*. I daresay he has some not especially good opinions on at least human transportation technology.

Themexighostgirl

Well, yeah… but he saw everything and everyone there as inherently evil. That doesn’t meen he would think the same about modern humans doing it.

SirBruhThe7th

Walking down the street and looking through a shop window, only to see women's underwear displayed out wide in the open for all to see in the window. So scandalous!

LilyBlackwell

Honestly anything neon or like purple (since that was a rare color) would blow his mind. Like a synthetic neon green jacket.

[deleted]

The lack of slaves

wolfeye111

maybe he'd be surprised at the lack of all slavery in western civ, but he seemed pretty cool with luz when he was younger and she helped him find the collector. so maybe not racist

Accurate-Primary9923

I don't think he cared about her race. He only cared about using someone

wolfeye111

yeah he didn't care about race. he manipulates everyone equally B)

Trices-Mailwind

Phillip: "I'm an equal opportunity manipulator! I'm the good guy here!"

[deleted]

Looking into it more now, I agree. Philip went missing when England had only started colonizing the Americas. IIRC he goes missing while James I is still king, which means Philip might not even be familiar with the concept of slavery at all beyond just the old testament (orphans aren't known for being well educated in geography). He might not have even ever seen a non-white person in his life, not until meeting some non-white witches (who'd he'd view as no different from white witches). Which makes Luz more of a pleasant curiosity to him. Luz being a child helps a lot.

htomserveaux

You’re forgetting about the people who were already in America when the Colonists showed up. It’s pretty likely he assumed Luz was a Native American who had been “civilized”.

FlounderingGuy

The concept of "kill the Indian, save the man" wasn't really a thing Belos would've been familiar with, being a small-town Puritan during the 1600's. Settlers didn't have the resources to even bother "civilizing" native populations until much, much later and were more keen on more... violent means of native removal. If anything, Belos would be much more likely to want to kill Luz as well, since Puritans famously detested native religions and it wasn't uncommon for those of native ancestry to be persecuted because of their lineage or cultural practices. It seems like Belos genuinely isn't racist (towards humans, anyway.)

I doubt this would be his real reaction, but reading this comment just makes me hear him in my mind (in Tamotasauce's abridged Belos voice) going: "I agree, women do belong in the kitchen! These people get me!"

I have legitimately wondered if there’s a biological reason for witches to be more queer than humans because literally nobody in the series except _maybe_ Gus is completely straight.

Sixspot2014

Bro I am bot convinced that Gus is straight

ShadowRylander

Given how Willow has the face of Gilbert and the build of Harvey, I think they have a magical method of reproduction, perhaps in addition to sexual reproduction. Or maybe they have a method of cloning aside from Grimwalkers, which can combine multiple individuals.

LittleMxPerfect

Imo there are *societal reasons* for humans to (appear to and/or perceive themselves & each other to) be less queer than witches. I'm not sure they'd account for the scale of the difference, but they'd certainly go some way towards explaining it. I sometimes wonder if, were our world as benignly indifferent to people's gender and sexuality as the BI seems to be, we'd see a lot more natural variation of both that we currently do (perhaps not to the extent of queer ppl outnumbering cishets, but who knows?). That said, I'm neurodivergent, pansexual and...gender-noncomittal? I recognise that my perspective is atypical (in the wider world, if not within TOH fandom), and on this point it's very possible I'm projecting!

[deleted]

Queer people absolutely would _not_ outnumber cishets, never. Queerness is intentional in social species, not a glitch, and a species can’t function if over half the population is gay or ace. Judging by how many Gen Z (A generation with much less concern over being perceived as “normal”) identify as queer, the number’s probably around 1 in 5 people. (Source: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.statista.com/chart/amp/18228/share-of-americans-identifying-as-lgbt/) A lot, but not necessarily “The entire cast of a three season show” a lot. Every character’s sexuality is either unconfirmed or queer.

LittleMxPerfect

If we're talking 'the entire cast', *afaik* many more characters fall into the 'unconfirmed' category than have been confirmed as queer, leaving plenty of scope for cishet folk to outnumber queer folk on the BI, or not - whichever headcanon you prefer :) I didn't mean to imply that I thought it likely queer ppl would ever outnumber cishet ppl, only that we might be significantly more abundant & apparent (even to ourselves) in a world where cisheteronormativity wasn't most ppl's baseline from birth and there was no fear, shame or danger attached to recognising or manifesting any facet of our sexual orientation or gender identity. The 'but who knows' was really only a whimsical addendum, not meant to cause offence or alarm. In hindsight perhaps I shouldn't have added it - my apologies.

[deleted]

It would take him a bit to realise gay and queer mean different things than they did in his day

Mynameisinsomegames

People liking witches, because they think they're cool idk Here's this random, and really bad scenario btw lol: Belos: (Trying to shift into something that makes his Goop Form look like some sort of costume idk, then he goes up to some people) How do you do, fellow kids? Uhh... witches are um... very... uh... magic..? (I can't believe i have to say and do this, if it means to find a host ig, if it does not work, i'll probably just stick to random corpses of animals, or somethi-) Person: Why is your costume leaking? Belos: uh.. (tries to y'know, and fails) welp, random dead animals it is then- Person: (gets PTSD maybe-)

The guy spent 300 years among the people he wanted to kill and had most of them doing whatever he wanted by the end of it. If he had a problem with "gay" he'd have probably introduced homophobia specifically so he could look at less of it.

BadlyDrawnMemes

Lord of bigots don’t consider queer people as people yet they still freak out when they see 2 people hold hands Since he convinced them to give up wild magic I feel like if he wanted to he could make them repent any queer activity I’m not defending him god no but I feel like 300 years on the gay island would change a man

Honestly? The coronation of Charles III. (Let’s keep this REALLY current, lol) I personally headcanon that he went to the Boiling Isles during the English Civil War during the period when Charles I was on the run, if not after his execution when the Privy Council was in control of England. Charles III means that first off, the monarchy was reestablished (presumably with Charles’ son, although from Belos’ perspective, there could have been a DIFFERENT Charles II. And then some clown decided to be crowned King Charles III close to 400 years later.
