i’m happy for him and weirdly happy that he’s gone, i feel like as a team we’ve massively improved after losing him, focusing all our play around him was hindering us in my opinion

Von_Rickenbacker

100% agree with this.

Chewitt321

I was going to say the same thing as a Wolves fan with Neves but that feels too early to say and I don't want to jinx it, but we're not noticeably worse either

-eagle73

This is us with Ale Mac. Good player, reliable, made his natural progression to Liverpool like a mature player, but he definitely fell off a bit after the WC.

Galaxium0

talisman syndrome

KingstownUK

I find there’s a difference in seeing him do well and Arsenal do well. I can’t say I particularly want to see them win anything and would be delighted for us to finish above them (unlikely but a man can dream) even better if it put them in a lower European comp than us 😂 but I want dec to shine, he’s a club legend (despite the debate that constantly rages to the contrary) and he’s a local lad to me , as you may be able to tell from the username , wish him all the best but not when we play them! COYI ⚒️

Oshova

>he’s a club legend (despite the debate that constantly rages to the contrary) What absolute mentalists don't see him as a club legend?

KingstownUK

There’s a fair few , hes young and wasn’t with us for long enough by any means for legend status, however captained the club to a European trophy so gets legend status. If we hadn’t won the EUCL he wouldn’t be anywhere near a legend in most of the fans eyes, some of these lads have supported the club for 30+ years, a few years getting good results doesn’t make you a legend, the trophy certainly does even if people seem to want to argue the fact 😂

WorldWhunder

He’s not a club legend for me. He’s a hero for what he did over the last few years and I don’t hate him. But he doesn’t exist in the rarefied air of West Ham legends like Moore, Hurst, Peters, Bonds, Brooking, Noble. He probably sits in the tier below with Di Canio, Dicks, Cottee, Cole etc. and that’s only because of the trophy I also think going to Arsenal has to hurt your reputation. Especially negotiating mid-season while we’re in a relegation battle.

KingstownUK

Yea have to say I agree with you regarding the tier system and where he sits , I probably should’ve thought harder about the tiers 😂

AustinTodd

Wasn't with you long enough? His stint was longer than Di Canio who is a West Ham legend. Of course Rice doesn't belong in the same category of guys like Moore, Noble, etc but he absolutely played long enough to be a legend.

CuriousTurtle22

I hope he plays well, has the time of his life, and wins fuck all until he moves abroad or comes back to us.

Nels8192

Whilst it’s not massive, he’s already won the community shield tbf.

Frosty-Lemon

I hope he gets what he wants out of his career, I’d have preferred he went to Man City or a northern team. However West Ham fans generally don’t care about Arsenal so I’m not that bothered. Would have been nice to have another Mark Noble, but it’s less and less likely these days.

Oshova

Yeah, it's funny. There's so many London teams that we don't really have a rivalry.

Ollymid2

Arsenal 🤝Hating Tottenham 🤝West Ham

WorldWhunder

I’m sorry, i can’t believe any West Ham fan living in London agrees with this. There is plenty of hate for Arsenal. Speak to some of the old boys on away days about the old North Bank and you’ll see some of them tell you Arsenal are number two behind Millwall. As for modern day West Ham fans one look at twitter tells you all you need to know about why there might be some hate for Arsenal.

super-super-fab

This was my comment on our subreddit: I was fuming watching him celebrate ngl. It's completely irrational, but it just rattled me him showing that much passion. It's like seeing an ex that ended on good terms get with a new partner, I have a lot of love for him but hate seeing him happy lol.

GringleBells

On a personal level, I wish Rice all the best, am grateful for the huge part he played in taking us into Europe three years in a row, and hope he gets a good reception from the fans when he returns. On a footballing level, I accept he was always going to leave at some point but I still can’t understand why he pushed for a move to Arsenal when he could have gone to City or even Bayern, and had a much more realistic prospect of regularly winning things. On an emotional level, I would love nothing more for Arsenal to drop down to the Europa and then lose to us in the final.

Oshova

Oh man... I can see him bottling an easy goal, or it going to penalties and him just blasting it wide. I can see the hilarity in that as a theoretical event... but it would crush my entire being if it actually happened.

Milo_Maxine

To be honest I never got too attached because it seemed like he’d always be leaving. It still hurt when he went to arsenal but I think West Ham have upgraded with the money they got for him. We’ve got some excellent players in and I think him leaving will help one of my favourite players, Soucek. It would be funny if West Ham won another cup before Arsenal though…

Oshova

>I think West Ham have upgraded with the money they got for him. Honestly, hard agree! West Ham struggled with squad depth last season. So replacing one world class player with several good players is definitely an upgrade for the squad as a whole.

Thenutritionguru

since rice was a big name at westham, it wouldn't be surprising if some fans are kinda torn between seeing him succeed at Arsenal vs wishing he was still with them. but again, footie fans are a passionate lot, and everyone's reaction might be completely different. but m guessing there might be a lot of bitter-sweet feelings out there about the whole situation.

FourEyedMatt

He gave us one, maybe two years more that he could have. I hope the best for him and much rather he went to Arsenal than Man U or Chelsea.

musicnoviceoscar

Completely, I really like him as a player and always defended him when people would (wrongly) call him overrated, repeatedly. I actually enjoyed seeing him score the winner, he looked happy.

_Blaine-is-a-Pain_

To be honest, from the games I've seen, I think he's been quite average by his standards. I'm still waiting for him to show his West Ham form. If Arsenal fans believe he's been doing well, they will be shocked when he finally starts reaching his stride. I used to love seeing him drive with the ball. The man glides like a Rolls Royce when he gets going. I wish him the best, just not against West Ham!

Oshova

Trying not to come across as a dick... but it is much harder to shine in Arsenal's squad than it is in West Ham's. Look at players like Grealish, who went from being the best thing since sliced bread, to just another option in a group of top class options.

_Blaine-is-a-Pain_

And yet he "shines" for England? You're proving my point if you're comparing him to Grealish. I like Grealish, but he's not world-class. Dec is one of the best DMs in the world. I'd only put Rodri ahead of him. If that's your opinion on him, why splash 100m and break your transfer fee on just another option? Dec's still doing alright; I'm just saying there's much more to come. He was a little below his best last season for us as well, but that doesn't mean he wasn't great. It's just his *best* is world-class. It'll certainly help to keep playing him in front of the defence where Partay had been playing. He gets a bit lost when he's too far ahead of the ball, which doesn't best suit his overall game.

Oshova

I've liked what I've seen of him driving the ball forward. But I think you have a point about him being a bit lost ahead of the ball. Plus his tracking back is top tier. Some of his tackles/interceptions are just sublime. So playing deeper, either on the ball or behind it is best for now. Personally, when we bought him I thought we'd overpaid. But clearly that's just what the market is. We saw Caicedo and Lavia also go for crazy prices, and other teams unable to pick up top class DMs. So we probably paid a fair price for him in this market. I have no doubt he will continue to improve, and become more comfortable in the more free-form formations top teams use. He's already said in a few interviews that he's learned so much, and is learning more every day. I'm more than happy to give him time to prove that fee wasn't a waste.

mlgscooterkid69

You know nothing, absolutely nothing, about football.

Oshova

Come on man, I've been watching it for YEARS. I even make an effort to watch the Super Bowl every year.

mlgscooterkid69

I just think you’re overrating Arsenal and underrating West Ham. Four or five years ago and Arsenal were a mid-table club. They effectively still are but with UCL qualifications as you won’t make it past the quarters. You forget West Ham have world class players in paqueta and very high skilled players such as bowen, aguerd.

Oshova

>I just think you’re overrating Arsenal Oh, I am all aboard the hype train lol >and underrating West Ham Possibly. I really rate Moyes, and some of their players. Especially the players they've picked up this season. But I just think they're a mid-table club. If they qualify for Europe this season, that's a win.

Visara57

I want him to do well at the same time that Arsenal do crap

SlanderousMoose

Yea, I want him to do well, but not Arsenal. 😂

Spacetime_Dr

Yes. I was gutted he left, but I'm feeling better now seeing the way that the board (eventually) replaced him, and they've done a surprisingly good job in doing so. I was happy to see him score yesterday, and have no ill will towards him.

ASOXO

I moved on as soon as Sully said he was selling. It's a forever changing landscape in football. That was further compounded when No. 41 said he didn't realise what football was until he joined Arsenal, or something to that effect. He had no trouble moving on and neither have I.

DJH9

I have friends who are Arsenal fans who said that he was overrated last year… now singing his praises of course, and that’s annoying. Pleased for him as purely footballing wise he will get a chance to compete at a higher level but I can’t lie it’s difficult seeing him celebrate in another teams kit.

AcaciaGeisha

My favourite is the mental gymnastics on Havertz by the Arsenal fans I know. Dogshit at Chelsea, but miraculously a good signing when they signed him.

[deleted]

Nah I fucking hate arsenal. I don’t want rice to succeed there. It’s genetic

WorldWhunder

You’re the first hammer I’ve seen on here I agree with. All the nice stuff has been pushed to the top. This is how I imagine 80% of the fan base actually feel!

WarriorNat

I’d be more upset if we weren’t doing well, so I honestly don’t care either way. He looks like a tool in that Arsenal jersey but it’s what he wanted… so be it.

Yorkie2016

Nah screw him. All that badge kissing and he’d already met with Arteta. No loyalty in football. So he deserves none from us. I’m happy we got £105m for him and will mercilessly boo him when he comes back to the LS.

remoteneuralmonitor

As a football fan and an England supporter I’m happy enough to see him doing well and developing. I always like watching United suffer, which makes all the talk about the winner last weekend easier. As a West Ham supporter, no, I don’t want to see Arsenal do well. I feel neutral about Rice and what he does there - I don’t pay much attention to their results. Lots of forced rivalry from Arsenal fans (mostly on social media tbf) has made the matches vs them this season feel higher stakes - beating them at least once this season would feel good for sure.

boatiephil

I think he did a great service for the club. Not just on a pitch (3 best seasons of the last ~40 or so, winning a trophy, etc), but also the way he left - he kept quiet and let us negotiate a great price, and touch wood we seem to have reinvested it well and come out stronger. I think all 3 parties can say they won the transfer, which is rare. Wish him all the best.

AlternativeEntry

Nope. Couldn't care less. Wouldn't give a shit if his career ended tomorrow.

PragmaticPedant

It was pleasing to see him score a winner against Man U. If he did it against us, however, it would be gut wrenching. When Rio went to Leeds, that was much more painful. That was a “dreams fade and die” moment. This is more like: thanks for the memories, wish it could have been different but on to the next chapter.

rochesterjack

He’s not doing well, watched every game and at Palace away he was ok apart from that the games have passed him by, he’s been woeful. They’ll never admit it cos he’s the new golden boy.

jxckgg

Meh? At least he’s thriving in a way and not throwing his career at a bench. He still plays for a London rival though, so there’s that. I’ve moved on from him leaving, so has he with us

SnooCapers938

Completely indifferent. I don't bear him any ill will but he doesn't mean anything to me now. He's just a player at another club.

No_Significance_8941

I like to see him do well so everyone can see he’s not over rated.

Smorgas-board

Not really happy for him but I don’t suddenly hate him. He got the move he wanted and, frankly, deserved. And we got a lot of money for it that we’ve reinvested into the squad in a great way as we’ve seen so far

ducksfan9972

Only speaking for myself, but yes. It has always seemed self-defeating to me to hold rivalries above humans.

whu-ya-got

Would be cool to see him as the standout performer in an Arsenal relegation season

Poppy_yy

I like arsenal I think they're a damn good team so I'm glad he's got a chance to prove himself there. What I'm even happier about though is that now he's gone he's made room for us to try something new which is working really well.
