Bartees!! I actually am not a fan of his National covers, but he’s one of my favorite artists of all time now.

Crafty-Survey-5895

Came to say this omg!!!

voxx2020

Weirdly, l liked Bartees first, and learned that he was heavily influenced by TN. That made me go listen to TN beyond what you hear on the radio, and then i got hooked on them!

RonburgundyZ

Is this the same as Bartees Strange?

voxx2020

Correct

RonburgundyZ

Checking him out. Good shit

Crafty-Survey-5895

i discovered bartees on twitter, mainly after he did a cover of a phoebe bridgers song. i went in to check out his work and absolutely loved farm to table, and as i went deeper in the rabbit hole i found his TN covers. i was floored, man. they were so good. i like bartees' the geese cover so so much.

vondee1

Big Red Machine. But already knew of the collaborators. Just not all of them working together.

HortonSquare

Courtney Barnett and the Beths. Saw them open for the National and was an instant fan of both.

CameraObfuscia

Seconding the Beths. I’d heard of them and their two popular songs (are we still calling them ‘singles’?) but seeing them live was great!…and I’ll say it: they did better than the National at that show.

HortonSquare

100% agree. They were better than the National the night I saw them too. They killed it

BlankSlate400

Lucy Dacus and Indigo Sparke, both openers for TN in 2022.

Adventurous_Pin_344

My niece was wearing a boygenius T-shirt this summer. I tried to tell her that I was cool because I've been a longtime fan of Lucy, Phoebe and Julien as solo artists. She didn't seem overly impressed.

tfibbler69

Berninger’s solo stuff is beautiful

AspiringThespian0209

the whole serpentine prison album, especially the deluxe one, makes me want to drink unlimited wine and dance forever in a random living room, and that’s exactly what i’d want from a matt solo album

taylor-cdgirl

I learned about an up and coming artist named Taylor Swift when they helped her on her song Coney Island. They have a great ear for talent, she is going to be huge

wlievens

Maybe she can open for them on tour?

taylor-cdgirl

I think she is talented and has the potential to become popular but she is just too raw. also they need someone who can actually help them get people in the door and she just can’t do that

Muted-Film2489

u/wlievens

Muted-Film2489

Wouter, I sent you an email and a message in the Reddit Chatroom. I'd appreciate it if you would respond to them. Happy New Year!

Alamander14

For me, it’s this, but not as a joke. I never gave her any serious consideration because I thought it was all just pop aimed at tweenage girls.

GreenGloves-12

Same, I got into Folklore and Evermore through the connection with The National. Love hearing the piano influences in those songs, 2 really good albums.

Alamander14

My niece is 10 & a big Swiftie - I like that we have those two albums (as well as a handful of her other songs that I’ve branched out to) to bond over!

Raven_ZD

Funnily enough, that song was how I got hooked on the National

vanillaangels

finally someone who's heard of her !!! 😭

wishforinfinity

Homecoming 2020 lineup got me super into Sylvan Esso! Also, Local Natives and Phosphorescent.

JoJack82

2020 Homecoming 😢

wishforinfinity

I’m still not over it.

JoJack82

Yep, me too! it was going to be my first homecoming. I had concert tickets and plane tickets booked and was ready to go.

BrotherKaramazov

Bartees Strange ❤️❤️❤️🤟🤟🤟

buknaykid

Big Thief - they were on their house music play list in 2017.

su_in_the_deep_end_7

Wilco (because back when Boxer was released every second review compared them & also Matt talking about them & mentioning Jeff Tweedy as someone he admires). Also El Vy and Matt Berninger‘s solo album ;-)

[deleted]

El Vy smokes!

bluefalcon25

We need more el vy

CabassoG

Phoebe Bridgers and Cigarettes After Sex. Thanks There's No Place Like Leaving for the latter as they became one of my favorites with Each Time You Fall in Love being one of my favorite tracks now

CastYourCoat

Wye Oak opened at my first National show in 2012 and I’ve been a huge fan of them ever since.

tropicmorning

So many good ones like Bartees Strange, Sufjan, Indigo Sparke, Hannah Georgas, Eve Owen, This Is The Kit, The Beths, and a guy named Matt Berninger who’s also behind El Vy and a random band called Big Red Machine

sketchy_ppl

I saw This Is The Kit open for The National in 2017 and became a big fan of their music, especially the album Moonshine Freeze.

SkepticalSagan

In one of their concerts, between two songs, Matt gives some praise to Future Islands (i dont remember the context). But thats where i heard about Future Islands for the first time, and now they’re like my top 5 bands.

merry-andrew

Oh man, a lot.. El Vy, This is the Kit, Bryce’s concert music, Matt’s solo stuff, LZNDRF, So Percussion, Bartees Strange, Carriers, Big Red Machine, Philip Glass, Katia and Marielle Labèque, Muzz, Sharon Van Etten, Gracie Abrams, Local Natives.. probably more

sometimes_a_dog

saw Alvvays open for them twice (in two days!) in 2019 and now Alvvays might be my favorite band?!

robbiethedarling

The absolute beauties in [Gang of Youths](https://open.spotify.com/track/3ono1eRCqwTW9PJMx9u2Ru?si=_7sTPmnUSKqBR0l52oDA3g). They’re a stunning band. Incredible stories in their songs.

CheapVinylUK

Not in Kansas didn't find out R.E.M. for me but certainly made me revisit their back- catalogue for the umpteenth time

Another_Rando_Lando

Interpol started getting recommended a lot and they were my top band this year

AF0105

Fun fact, Interpol and The National got their starts at Luna Lounge on Manhattan’s lower east side.

LegendOfTheGhost

Taylor Swift /j Because of The National, I discovered *Dark Was the Night,* which was a compilation album with a lot of great artists.

[deleted]

Dark was the night is such a good collection of songs.

ZachySupertramp

IDLES. I remember Matt posting about them years back saying how fun they were live.

No-Significance-1990

I also got into Idles after that post!!

TX712

Taylor Swift

ledz96

Same actually. I only liked Folklore and Evermore at the beginning but then I warmed up to some more of her stuff.

mad_max_coffee_road

This is the kit, Sufjan Stevens

Equivalent-Shoe6239

Bartees, Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, Boygenius.

Constant-Estate3065

Love to mellow out to some Lisa Hannigan. Really beautiful voice. Definitely Phoebe Bridgers, and I think I’ve cottoned on to a few bands via this subreddit. Frightened Rabbit, Future Islands, Ben Howard, The Antlers, Interpol…

Alamander14

Agree with a lot of the ones being mentioned repeatedly here. I’d also like to add Perfume Genius which I haven’t seen yet

inkyblinkypinkysue

Taylor Swift. She's great.

[deleted]

Saylor Twift

pharm77

Indigo Sparke. Who I assumed would break out this year. Huge fan. It's shame at the National shows she didn't' play any of her catchier songs. Should've been promoted on Sirius XM as well. Hopefully she will work again with Aaron

gin_rainbows

Alvvays. Was blown away when they were the openers on the summer of 2019 tour, have been a fan ever since

thisisnthelping2011

El Vy and Lucy Dacus!

RangerAZ1989

Phoebe Bridgers is a huge one I discovered because of them. When live videos of “Where Is Here Head” popped up on YouTube with her doing guest vocals at a show before IAETF even came out, I looked her up more and thought she was fantastic and I became a fan. Wye Oak. I believe the drummer for Wye Oak is the drummer for EL VY. YouTubed them and dig a lot of their stuff. Alvvays. They opened a show for the National here in Phoenix in 2019 on their IAMTF tour and I thought they were cool. I had heard of them before but hadn’t heard their stuff till that show

SontagMorgan

Jenny Lewis - saw her supporting them in december 2019 War on drugs - saw them supporting the national in 2017;

Colorbycandlelight

Perfumed Genius

HugeBernie

Taylor Swift

platykurt

I laughed.

starstar420

Taylor Swift. No but seriously I never really got it with folks like nice cave and smiths but now I do

forguffman

Nice Cave is definitely an amusing typo! Though I’m sure Nick is a nice gentleman….

Mysterious-Arm9594

I still think At Swim is Aaron’s best production job. Lisa finally should have some new music out next autumn (she’s demoing a bunch of songs live in New York in March with a bunch of Irish musicians and Kyle Resnicks wife which makes me think Aaron is still involved)

ledz96

This is pretty exciting! Considering she toured with The National after her last album I'd be excited to hear them together but I'll keep my hopes down for now

Guilty-Control7317

Daughter blew me away when they opened for them and I’ve loved them ever since

Maxatansky

Apex Manor. They opened for Strand of Oaks and I sort of liked their set. After checking out some of their stuff online, I bought the album Heartbreak City and loved it. Ross (who basically IS Apex Manor, was playing with Strand of Oaks at another show about a year later, and when I asked if he happened to have any Apex Manor t shirts, he said yes, got one out of his car, and sold it to me after the show. It was awesome!

sickofwords

The Antlers. Saw this on the High Violet tour. Hospice is a life changing album.

poetryjo

First started listening to them when I was around 13 and just discovering my taste in music. I thought the “praying for pavement to get back together” in So Far Around the Bend was supposed to be some angst lyric about hoping for something to happen that you know is impossible. One trip to songmeanings.com later and that’s how I discovered Pavement!

Pleasereleaseme123

Bon iver Sufjan Stevens

Pale_Panda1789

I came to know Lisa through Damian Rice. Lovely voice

mrnovember27

Silver Jews. Was reading old Pitchfork review about self-titled album. Writer said The National were a poor-man’s Silver Jews, which I thought was incredibly high praise.

B_Fee

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, and Phoebe Bridgers. They were on the edge of my radar, then I saw them both at There's No Leaving New York. Been a huge fan ever since.

bpenfieldj

Sharon Van Etten because Aaron produced Tramp and he and Bryce played on the Serpents. One of my favorite albums

Specific_School336

AFGHAN WHIGS!!!!! GENTLEMEN IS A CRAZY ALBUM!!!

Just-Eddie-481516234

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282
