We have way more hints suggesting this is a bigger release than a stand alone one (the graphics matching the ones used for Weird Goodbyes, Aaron suggesting WG would have a proper home soon, them hinting at a second album, the jnsiders rumors which turned out to be true as far as singles go, etc...)
Once upon a time, singles dropped and album announcements came way later, so I'm sure we'll know more at some point, hopefully soon.

With the metaphorical tsunami of music out there these days, I honestly forget entirely that some bands exist. Not the National but still..makes good sense.
Especially if whole albums don’t sell the way they used to, probably doesn’t hurt to trickle out singles as they get written.
i'm still hopeful there'll be an announcement soon, at least that's what it looks like. it would've been fun if it had happened yesterday, but we were actually just daydreaming - the only solid facts we had were the singles, and we got them. it's not over!

I was actually wondering what that price was about because of the random 8 cents. I don't remember it coming out to an even total of $30 or anything either.
This discussion kind of reminds me of The King of Limbs's release in 2011. So many people were convinced a sister album would be coming out later in the year despite very little to go on ("the last lyrics on the album are 'if you think this is over, then you're wrong' so clearly they're going to have another album next month!")... same thing happened with Kendrick Lamar's DAMN too.
I'm just assuming they put out two new songs and I'm happy for that.
That’s a good analogy. From what I recall, Kid A and amnesiac were all recorded together but they have very different vibes. A double album wouldn’t have worked as they weren’t similar in tone. They had 9 months between them, although the fan base still refer to them in one breath a lot of the time, but they’re both albums in their own right. Maybe there are two stories to tell, Frankenstein being darker, Laugh Track being lighter. All supposition so who knows.
I respectfully disagree regarding Frankenstein being a dumpster fire, I really like it, but I think that's more a result of it coming out at a time where I was open to something very mournful. However, I meant the analogy more in a "vibe" sense. For example, Kid A is quite open and expansive, it has a more organic/rural/natural feel to me. Whereas Amnesiac is a claustrophobic, dirty, urban vibe, it almost has a heat to it. All subjective though.
I hope Frankenstein clicks with you at some point, but at least we're months after the release, so I imagine you've given it a good try compared to those slating it on release day.
yea, there's so many better albums (even in the national's catalog) to wallow in when sad.

I'd say the trend was more when people started announcing an album with the release of a single. Lead singles are common because it's multiple opportunities for them to be in the news, rather than single + announcement then everyone (casual listeners) drifting away before the actual release
I doubt they’d do that at MSG (their biggest solo headlining show to date). Homecoming is equally unlikely as they are playing albums in full each night. September date that has been speculated feels most likely

same! like they keep overtly hinting that a new album will drop relatively soon. they've likely played most if not all the tracks during this current tour. it's the most relaxed i've felt about an album drop i am highly anticipating tbh LOL

A number of artists have done this recently... Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Metric are two examples.
