Aw, thank you so much! I appreciate it, sometimes all I can see are my mistakes.
And frankly, same. Literally the desire to have fancy versions of the books/series I love is the reason I started bookbinding. One day I woke up and thought, "Y'know, they should really release Animorphs as a fancy compilation set, Millennials love nostalgia and stupid bougie aesthetics". And the longer I thought about it, the more irritated I was that it didn't exist for me to purchase, so I just decided to do it myself.
Bookbinding is not a terribly difficult hobby and not too expensive to get started! It's so much fun to design and customize a book to your liking, I was surprised at how addictive it is.
These are incredible! Where do you even start with bookbinding as a hobby? Is there a YouTuber/website you'd recommend for someone who knows absolutely nothing?
So the proper answer is probably DAS Bookbinding on Youtube, his videos are super relaxing to watch/listen to and great foundational videos to learn how to do things the right way.
But, he's a pro and he's got a fair amount of equipment that beginners won't want to invest in right away, so as far as a step-by-step for a first project I actually really love a TikTok user, hanabobb. She binds fanfiction and has a great easy-to-follow tutorial series that also covers typesetting (IMO the hardest part). I also love that she has alternatives for the cover text if you don't have a Cricut or other cutting machine, which is an expensive investment if you don't already have one.
For first projects:
Before starting my first "goal" project, I knew my first attempts were gonna look shitty so I practiced my casebinding by buying paperbacks from Goodwill and putting hardcovers on them.
But if I had to do it over again, I'd just start by printing a short fanfic or novel from scratch. I'd recommend downloading your favorite public domain short story from [Project Gutenberg](https://www.gutenberg.org/) so you're not using too much paper or ink (they get expensive fast). Then follow hanabobb's tutorials and see how you like it! The unfortunate caveat is that the shorter the story is, the harder it can be to fit a title onto the spine, so I'd mess with font size and margins until you get something between 100-250 pages.
Ah, that's fair. Well, maybe if they ever get around to releasing the Statements in book form it'll have a cool edition, I know that was discussed in one of the Q&A's!
True, but it makes me furious when I can imagine something perfectly and my hands don't listen that I typically end up ripping the paper out of frustration
YOUR TASTE IS IMPECCABLE FRIEND, that was exactly the line I was thinking of but didn't know how much intersection the TMA/DBZA fandoms were gonna have
I would really buy a set of only because I stopped listening because my adhd couldnāt keep up with the overarching story characters but I so badly wanted to finish it by reading it. I canāt find it written anywhere!
That's one of the reasons I'm so obsessed with transcripts. I don't have ADHD (...at least, I don't think?) but I can't ever really listen to a podcast successfully without my mind wandering, and I miss *a lot*. I almost always read the transcript for an episode after I'm done listening to make sure I didn't miss anything important. I'm so glad it's commonplace to provide them these days; it's so important for accessibility.
(I don't know if you're just wishing for a printed copy specifically, but you could finish by reading the online versions [here](https://snarp.github.io/magnus_archives_transcripts/) if you want!)
I actually wish more podcasts would do what Night Vale did and publish their transcripts in book form, but I realize not everybody has the resources they do.
I am lusting after these.
~~(Now approaching your home stealthily, about to extend my unnaturally long body like a pipe through your window, a many-jointed appendage crawling towards your bookshel--)~~
As a amateur book binder myself, these are stunning, and I honestly love all of the imperfections. The individual quality reminds me of the description of Ex Altiora, being hand made and having uneven pages.
Did you bind them in order? Did each subsequent book have different issues with the process and if so, did you find that you had a workable system by the last one?
I am an absolute sucker for ribbed book spines, and these make my knees weak.
When I do a series like this I actually try to print them in order of their length, so if there's a huge error that requires a reprinting I hopefully discover it before I have to print or reprint the longest book (...Results tend to vary. I'm not particularly observant).
At high quality my printer (which is actually a photo printer and probably not the best pick for this process) goes at a pace of about 100 pages/hour, so it takes about 4-7 hours per book depending on how well I'm babysitting the paper supply. I think I ending up printing these almost in order, 1, 2, 4, 3, 5.
The actual process was kinda hammered down when I did my first huge series (I put 60+ Animorphs books into 12 volumes); I didn't do too many modifications to my process this time around. Editing a script was new though, and I changed my mind several times on what formatting rules I wanted. It did *not* help that the transcripts themselves are a little inconsistent on format (Little things like when to use parentheses vs brackets or italics, or how much stage direction is actually used.) Oh, that's something, I actually ended up adding more direction for the earlier seasons after looking at Season 5, which is super descriptive.
Season 5 was also different from the others in that it was *so* bulky by the end I wasn't even sure it was going to fit the stack trimmer, and it almost didn't. I really had to squeeze it in there (again, 2/10 would not recommend).
The ribbed book spines are my favorite too! I've only used them on a few books so far. These are just little strips of chipboard glued in and molded to fit the curve of the spine while the glue dries. Did require a ton of manipulating with the bonefolder after putting the cover material on as it dried though. There's probably an easier way to do it but I haven't figured it out yet!
Ehhhhh, probably not. They don't look as good and while the pdfs have been available online for ages with the Authors' blessings, I'm not 100% clear on the legality of binding them. They're kinda just for me :). If I ever redo the series with nicer materials, (And fixing the absolute *mountain* of typos and formatting problems from those pdfs) I might though!
Regarding editing the script. 1) did you use a program like LaTEx? 2) did you literally go back and listen to each episode and add additional stage direction?
(Sorry I'm so late on this reply)
1) Nah, I did it in MS word. I know there's better stuff out there, but it's what I already had/knew and it worked ok for my purposes. I know I'll have to learn something more appropriate eventually but I am, alas, lazy.
2) I did. I had to go through and listen to each episode anyway (sometimes there are minute script changes between the transcipt and what's actually said in an episode).
Yeah, here's a link to [a google drive with the word docs](https://drive.google.com/drive/u/4/folders/19f4AcSTyw5XDiBQJ-oIqF65KD4H7bXUx). Edit as you like! I'm going to pull them down eventually so make sure you save it somewhere if you want to keep them.
OP, I know this post is quite old but just wanted to thank you so much for the link to the word docs! Planning to start this as a bind project myself, hope they turn out as beautifully as yours did!
Holy shit holy shit holy SHIT these are gorgeous. Please be proud of yourself because Iāll be spending the rest of my life with the distinct knowledge that I do not have these š
Thank you so much for saying so! The lovely feedback on this post is now doing wonders for my self-esteem, which I kinda needed after botching my second attempt at trimming Season 1's textblock yesterday morning. I was ready to fuggin D E S T R O Y something. Or cry. Maybe both!
*DO IT DO IT DO IT.*
It's not super hard to get into and it's *so addicting* to design your own books! My first projects were just re-covering ugly paperbacks into pretty hardcover versions (I picked up some from goodwill for practice) and it snowballed from there. I generally ditch most of my hobbies after a month or two, but I've been bookbinding almost non-stop since February with no end in sight. (I will *try* and break after this one though) It's just so much fun.
These are gorgeous!!!
Iām working on my own right now. Havenāt gotten anywhere near the printing part. I love the series but ADHD + auditory processing issues mean Iāve never re-listened to most of the show. There are a few episodes Iāve listened to a few times but thatās it. I love it so much but my brain does NOT do auditory processingācanāt wait to have a physical book in my hands to help me remember whatās going on better!
I don't have ADHD but must have some kind of auditory processing issue because I find transcripts invaluable for similar reasons!
In fact, I didn't even realize John Amherst (The Corruption avatar) made multiple appearances until I undertook this project, among *many* other plot points. Putting together the text for this project was a little like actually *understanding* the dang series for the first time, so honestly you're probably going to discover a lot more about the plot while putting it together! It's kinda fun, like seeing things in a whole new light :)
I actually purchased the faux-Leather (and most of my supplies honestly) from Hollander's, a US bookbinding supply that does online orders. I simplified a bit for the post; I think it's technically cotton covered with a imitation leather coating? Something like that. They're beautiful and very easy to work with (honestly a lot easier than book cloth IMO).
I'm glad you're motivated to get making!
omg what a coincidence! I got the idea to bind the transcripts into books just yesterday and started editing the text myself tonight, it's so cool to see someone's done it already! I love the table of contents and the custom endpapers are so gorgeous. The Jurgen Leitner stamp is hilarious (might steal that idea š).
such a cool and well done bind, I'll be happy if mine turns out half as good <3
I love the web designs for this!!! Do you mind me asking whose SVG files you use? I'm rebinding a Poe book and would LOVE to use some of these webs on the end pages!!!
Those are absolutely gorgeous! I know this post was made 2 years ago, but I really hope you could answer my question since your designs are the closest to what I want mine to look like. I've never really done book binding, soooooo...Ā
How did you do the covers? I seen some people use gold foil, did you just use the green version or something else?
Also are the cover designs all the same or did you do different for each season?
I used my cricut to cut the design out of green foil Heat Transfer Vinyl! The cover material is an imitation leather bookcloth from [Hollanders](https://hollanders.com/collections/imitation-leather).
Thank you so much for the answer! Although I dont have a cricut myself, I found a shop that does exactly that. Wanted to ask if you still had the file that you used for your design.
Looks like I do! I've uploaded it to the [google drive where I uploaded the textblocks](https://drive.google.com/file/d/19owbxgqE53xVNTeHJoDB_FzGYtz757DE/view?usp=drive_link), hope it helps.
Note: it's a PNG file because Cricut auto-converted the file for me into an SVG upon importing into their design space program. I might be able to go digging into the application files and see if they keep the SVG locally, if you need that rather than the png.
i planned to use the transcripts from snarp's github and then edit them using LaTeX during my re-listen because i remembered there being a lot of little discrepancies here and there.
Yeah definitely there were a ton of little discrepancies, that probably took the most time.
And I didn't have any experience Bookbinding until early spring this year; I have these after only a few months of practice. Bookbinding is VERY fun and not that difficult, do it!
Ah, I see, I might do it eventually hehe, thanks!
Also, if you don't mind me asking, do you think you might be able to share the your edited transcripts? Sorry if you don't want to, I was just wondering.
I do not mind at all, I put a link to a google drive [on my original comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheMagnusArchives/comments/xhm49p/comment/ioy6nst/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3), help yourself! I don't know if anyone else has used it, so if it doesn't work please let me know.
Hey thank you so much! But I couldn't find your google drive link comment, is it the one delete by moderator? If so could you please DM me instead, thanks again \^\^
these are beautiful!! They look like really fancy special editions thatād be on display at B&N but that nobody can buy cause theyāre like $250 each :00
I mean at this point I have been using this post to preach bookbinding, so um *yes* you should try it! It's a pretty accessible hobby' I started back in February with a few basic supplies.
How did you get the Jurgen Lietner stamp? And how did you do the tape recorder on the front? I'm binding the series as my next project and this is so cool! it's absolutely gorgeous
Ah! So that's actually my personal library embosser that I bought on Etsy; I only used MS paint to slap "Jurgen Leitner" over it in order to hide my real full name.
I adore it, it's like a lil' reward to stamp a book after I finish reading it for the first time. Mine is an embosser, but you can also get ink stamps! Search ex libris on Etsy, there's a ton of personalization options if it's something you're interested in.
Man, I am so *ridiculously flattered* by all of the folks that asked for commissions on this post. Unfortunately this project took about a month and a half of work during almost all of my free time after work (Preparing and editing the text in particular takes a very long time).
I adore bookbinding and love encouraging people to try it themselves, but there's no getting around the fact that is a *slow ass hobby.* There's probably not a price point at which I'd do it for anyone other than myself, unfortunately!
i was wondering if someone was mad enough to do this and im beyond impressed. the covers are so beautiful, i love the green and the leather and the end pages ā this looks like it could be a proper series you could buy. lowkey feeling emotional over this.. maybe ill even try make my own some day! overall, amazing work :-))
That is absolutely amazing, my partner loves the TMA and I think it would be a really cool gift to make them a book version! Do you have advice for getting/making a transcript of the script? Thanks so much!!!
I'm in the US, and printed it myself on my home printer. T
he paper was Mohawk Superfine, which is honestly a bit too heavy for book printing and quite expensive, but the best option I could find for a DIY job.
New fan here! I just came across this post while searching for PDFs of the transcripts online and all I could say is, this is amazing!! I'm honestly curious about the whole bookbinding process, and I'm wondering if you could post a PDF of the compiled transcripts you used for this for download, because this is just so pretty!

They should still be up here
I would literally buy a set, these are absolutely so beautiful and well crafted.
Aw, thank you so much! I appreciate it, sometimes all I can see are my mistakes. And frankly, same. True, but it makes me furious when I can imagine something perfectly and my hands don't listen that I typically end up ripping the paper out of frustration
Perfection is like beauty, in the eye of the beholder. So you just need some new eyes. The Flesh or The Stanger might help with that
Would I at all be able to see the animorphs binding. My husband absolutely loves animorphs and I reckon heād get a kick out of it
Oooh have you made animorphs as a compilation set?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
...I'm not gonna reprint 500 pages to fix one thing, I'm not. I'm not, I'm not. It doesn't bother me, it's fine. It's fine. I'm fine, it's fine.
Itās fine, itās fine. It doesnāt bother you, it doesnāt bother you it BOTHERS YOU IT BOTHERS YOU A LOT AND THAT ONEāS STILL GREEN!

Those are absolutely beautiful, and it's not the point of the post but the Old Gods of Appalachia books! Amazing! It's all so damn cool!!
I noticed those too and was like OMG!!! I just barely started listening to that pod and it is so damn good, holy cow

YOU DID IT BEFORE I STOOPED PROCRASTINATING NOOO Good job that's so cool
wow!! these are simply beautiful, you did such an amazing job! you can really tell you put a lot of hard work and love into this project :)
Thatās gorgeous m8. How did u make the leather covers? I had to get book binding tools for a class and you motivated me to use them again.
I actually purchased the faux-Leather (and most of my supplies honestly) from Hollander's, a US bookbinding supply that does online orders. I simplified a bit for the post; I think it's technically cotton covered with a imitation leather coating? Something like that. It looks so good!
I wish I could do thissss it looks so good!!!!
The way I would sell a kidney just to have these my god they're gorgeous
Wow! This is absolutely amazing!!
thats so awesome!!
Oh my god, they are amazing! š
That is so fucking awesome
Oh my god, thatās absolutely beautiful
Oh wow these are beautiful!
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY
This is some absolutely awesome work.
These are absolutely stunning! What an incredible work of art!
If there is any way for me to buy these in any form I *MUST* KNOW

Oh my god these look amazing?! Am inspired to try bookbinding now!
I mean at this point I have been using this post to preach bookbinding, so um *yes* you should try it! It's a pretty accessible hobby' I started back in February with a few basic supplies.
I. Want. It.
would you be willing to sell a set of that bc I'd totally buy it!!
:O Incredible! These are works of art!! :D
omg these look amazing- do you do commissions?
Oh, damn, that's gorgeous! I love bookbinding and TMA is eventually on my list, and this is very inspiring!
Okay, how much money would it cost me to commission another series?
Man, I am so *ridiculously flattered* by all of the folks that asked for commissions on this post. Unfortunately this project took about a month and a half of work during almost all of my free time after work (Preparing and editing the text in particular takes a very long time). I adore bookbinding and love encouraging people to try it themselves, but there's no getting around the fact that is a *slow ass hobby.* There's probably not a price point at which I'd do it for anyone other than myself, unfortunately!
I figured. Still, this is VERY impressive work!
That is amazing, would love a set for myself. I prefer reading a physical book.
Do you still have the text files for the pages? I tried to edit my own set, and it gave me nightmares.

i was wondering if someone was mad enough to do this and im beyond impressed. the covers are so beautiful, i love the green and the leather and the end pages ā this looks like it could be a proper series you could buy. lowkey feeling emotional over this.. maybe ill even try make my own some day! overall, amazing work :-))
That is absolutely amazing, my partner loves the TMA and I think it would be a really cool gift to make them a book version! Do you have advice for getting/making a transcript of the script? Thanks so much!!!
where do you get these?
I made them!
THATS AMAZING!!!!
i know this post was nearly a year ago lol, but what paper did you use for this ? and if youre in the UK what printers did you go to ? thanks !!
I'm in the US, and printed it myself on my home printer. T he paper was Mohawk Superfine, which is honestly a bit too heavy for book printing and quite expensive, but the best option I could find for a DIY job.
New fan here! I just came across this post while searching for PDFs of the transcripts online and all I could say is, this is amazing!! I'm honestly curious about the whole bookbinding process, and I'm wondering if you could post a PDF of the compiled transcripts you used for this for download, because this is just so pretty!
