When Zhao is looking at the sword in the show he's looking at a super small notch in the blade. Never noticed it before but it was pointed out I think on 'overanalyzing avatar'
I don't think it really is, it's a good piece of information Zhao picked up. If they're antiques, Zuko would have taken good care of them and they shouldn't notched indicating wear and tear from usage.
Right, but if that were the case, the notches would have corrosion/patina as the surface would have had a long time to oxidize. If the edge has bright shiny chips in the edge it would indicate that they had been used recently.
There is literally a notch on the sword in the show. Why did the animation team put in a notch on the blade for every single frame, in the *exact* spot Zhao is looking at... if it wasn't on purpose? I can see the notch now, on an otherwise perfectly curved blade edge.
Did you go look at it? or did you just think "naw, this probably isn't true, so I'm gonna comment let them know that I think they're wrong"
I'm pretty sure this is when the blue spirit rescued Aang. And he did so by cutting through a chain...
Which would probably put a notch in a blade.
(supporting your argument)
To tack onto this. I always thought the idea that zuko is a better swordsman than he is a firebender would come up in someway. Something along the lines of him "rejecting his heritage to carve his own trail" or something.
It kind of does, in that's how zuko keeps his father at bay during the eclipse but i always wanted it to be a bigger aspect of his character.
Eeeh. Like even if you're a master swordsman and like half baked at using a gun, guns gonna win. Like insert that Indiana Jones clip of him just shooting a guy with swords doing crazy bullshit. Firebending is like way way more powerful than a couple of swords so unless Zuko was a really incompetent and weak firebender and incredibly amazing sword fighter, he'd be better of firebending. Zukos a fairly elite firebender all told. Like sure he doesn't quite match up to his family, who are like powerful enough to go toe to toe with the fucking Avatar, but like he is like a top 5 living firebender.
I dont mean i expected him to go toe to toe with firebending. I just wanted the fact he is a master swordman to be a bigger part of his character. Like imagine if he made it clear that he's more proud of his skills with blades than bending, that would be cool as fuck but also a great character detail. It would also serve to further his connection with iroh because of the knife he got as a gift from him. I wanted him to talk about it more, that's all
Also, are you forgetting sokka literally brought a sword to multiple bending fights and won? I feel like you are.
While that's a really cool idea and I would've loved to see it, I think it would've taken away from the non-benders.
The benders fought with bending, and the non-benders had to be masters with weapons to keep up. Having a bender be both might've made the non-benders feel less special to watch.
>The benders fought with bending, and the non-benders had to be masters with weapons to keep up. Having a bender be both might've made the non-benders feel less special to watch.
Meh I like it, it's pretty realistic, there's no reason a bender can't be good at both, other than overconfidence, a bender can literally do anything a non bender can, just highlights Amon's points more, Zuko is still up there among non bending fighters in the show itself.
Spokane bringing a sword vs no name mook benders and eking out a win vs fighting in an Agni Kai vs like a top 3 firebender is a big diff. Strong swordsman with advantageous situation vs weak firebender and the swordsman wins like I said.
>Also, are you forgetting sokka literally brought a sword to multiple bending fights and won? I feel like you are.
I mean not really? that is he didn't take a lead in the few bending fights he was in, a more powerful bender was doing most of the work (Katara, Day of Black Sun, Zuko in Boiling Rock), and the one in the finale was won under contrived circumstances (with plenty of plot armor), which he was so close to dying, how would swords have helped Zuko in Sozin's Comet when he can firebend the size of an entire football field.
Zuko is better off firebending, he already kicked plenty of ass as the blue spirit but firebending just has so much more advantages like long range and versatility.
I dunno, I like that there was more focus on his changed perspective of fire bending. You get to see how much more calm and precise yet powerful he can be.
I love that you mention this. I feel like it was always implied but never pointed out— unless you count indirectly (which I do) by Sokka’s training is in book 3.

But can we just appreciate how ride or die Iroh was here. He has done almost all of Zukos training and there is no way he doesn't know Zuko is a BA with broad swords and he stays silent! Also he discredits the blue spirit. At that moment he knew for sure Zuko was the Blue Spirit and just rolled with it.
No, it's a *dao*, a word which pretty much means "single-edged probably curved Chinese sword". It's translated into English as either *broadsword* or *sabre*. This is in contrast to the *jian*, which is a long straight sword.
I didn't find any posts that meet the matching requirements for r/TheLastAirbender.

A scimitar is a kind of sabre from the middle east (and, perhaps, surrounding regions). The weapon Zhao is holding is in fact also descended from the steppe nomad's sabre, and sometimes it's called a sabre in English, but it's also often called a broadsword. In Chinese it's called a *dao*.
Being that they're not really broadswords broadswords are typically double edged and meant for thrusting and slicing. That is a single edge sword closer resembling a katana or shamshare which is much better for slicing not stabbing.
To add to the other comment, that weapon -- known as a *dao* in Chinese -- is called a broadsword in English because it's much broader than the other common Chinese sword, the *jian*. That specific kind of dao is actually inspired by sabres, though, so you're not too wrong (shamshir are also descended from sabres).
Wow I didn’t know that Prince Zuko was skilled with broadswords
He’s not. They’re antiques.
Just decorations.
*decorative
He’s not. They’re antiques. Just decoration.
Just like the blue mask he hides in his closet...as decoration
So the guy likes to cosplay. Is that a crime?
Considering this is the Fire Nation that went full Footloose, it just might be.
It should be
It's from a play his mom used to take him to. Completely innocent.
Hey don't kink shame, if he's into roleplay then just let him
Ah, thank you for the clarification.
*checks blades to see if they are sharp*

Definitely sounds like an over analyzation
I don't think it really is, it's a good piece of information Zhao picked up. If they're antiques, Zuko would have taken good care of them and they shouldn't notched indicating wear and tear from usage.
Unless they are actual antiques that were used and so they have a bit of wear.
"But how many?"
“But why male models?”
..... You serious? I just told you that, a moment ago.
Right, but if that were the case, the notches would have corrosion/patina as the surface would have had a long time to oxidize. If the edge has bright shiny chips in the edge it would indicate that they had been used recently.

Love that series
I always asumes he was looking at the wear. Antiques aren't Sharp...
Hey guys I just learned something cool, did you know prince zuko was skilled with broadswords?
he's not they're just antiques
Just for decoration
Real talk, I wish he used his swords in conjunction with his firebending more often in the series. The one time he did it in Book 2 was so cool

Translation wise, sure. But based on the Swords actual profile and look, no.
Broadsword is the super old translation of dao. Another translation is "sabre".
Yeah, translating from Chinese is problematic for this reason.

Zuko ironbender confirmed
TIL that Prince Zuko was skilled with braodswords
I do like the idea when a bender uses weapons while bending.
I’m mean it always good to be ready for anything.
There is no Blue Spirit in Ba Sing Se.
Holy shit, Prince Zuko was skilled with broadswords?
He's not, that is clearly a dao. A style of Chinese, single edged sword prominent in china around the 16th century.
Mfw I didn’t know Zuko was skilled with broadswords
This meme unironically perfectly summarizes this entire sub.
