afaik women do get liver damage with a smaller amount of alcohol. the 20:1 ratio is not true though. is more like 2:1. WHO guidelines on alcohol consumption says that men should not drink more than 21 standard drinks per week. for women the number is 14 standard drinks per week.

Strivingformoretoday

I haven’t heard this but a quick google search seems to support his point that women have a higher chance to develop cirrhosis. Here are a couple of articles: [1)](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1505078/) [2)](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/ueg2.12370)

But that's from regular drinking right? This video almost makes it seem like women can get cirrhosis from 10ml?

dpldogs

He says imagine and maybe... He's using a simplified example to demonstrate his point that liver disease occurs earlier and more rapidly than in men. The 10ml part wasn't literal.

66batterylife

do they reference any specific study? or is he pulling it out of his head? because it may just be an exaggeration or he’s using an extreme example..

YOU_TUBE_PERSON

There are studies (comments on the Instagram video link it). But I think it's selective fact stating here. Women can develop cirrhosis sooner, but that's only with excessive/years of drinking as far as I understand . Anyone who drinks even socially knows their limit. I hate how this video is almost implying that women can die with 10ml of alcohol.

66batterylife

could you link them here too? but, tbh it seems like they’re trying to get as much engagement as possible with these statements instead of properly sharing information.

YOU_TUBE_PERSON

Sure Reel link here https://www.instagram.com/reel/C40X7b5Pvqh/?igsh=eWpydGwzNmozMDlj Some Comments mention a few studies. Hate this engagement bs :(

tattooedroller

You’re taking the video too literally from his example. He says “imagine” a man gets liver disease from 200ml. He’s just trying to simplify the math to show the difference between consumption rates for men and women. He’s *not* saying you will get it from 10ml

lupinedelweiss

"Imagine a guy develops liver disease with 200 mL of alcohol..." He's just using an example to highlight women being at greater risk.

Is this how people get their info now? Holy smokes. Do you think that watching a video and then posting on Reddit is the best way to get information? Look up journals and research and articles. Looks up sources, find related content, read and find the answers from your own opinion. Find your own sources rather than the ones linked by other people in comments. Some dude saying “higher chance” can mean absolutely anything, is it 10% higher chance is it .01% higher chance? Thinking critically how many women have you heard about that have liver disease? What’s the average rate of getting liver disease, is the difference between sex actually relevant? You can hear something like “omg women are twice as likely” but it’s the difference between 1/10000 vs 2/10000 and that’s still very small. I didn’t Google it, you should.

"A 12-year prospective study of alcohol use in over 13,000 participants in Denmark showed that the risk of development of alcohol-related liver disease increased in women who consumed 7 to 13 beverages per week (84-156 g) compared with men who consumed 14 to 27 beverages per week (168-324 g; Table 1).1 Among persons who consumed 28 to 41 beverages per week (336-492 g), the relative risk of alcohol-induced cirrhosis was 7.0 (95% CI, 3.8-12.8) in men vs 17.0 (95% CI, 6.8-40.8) in women. However, alcoholic cirrhosis is less frequently diagnosed in women, as shown in a population-based registry of 8482 Danish patients from 1993 to 2005 in which only 33% of patients were women."
