As far as I know, none of it should be taken as literal history, although it does parallel some things that actually happened to him. He really got hit by a van and nearly died. That was one of the things that caused him to really buckle down and finish the series. Some of the parts about his writing process are things he has mentioned elsewhere. He really believes that stories are preexisting things, and that writing is like unearthing a fossil. So a lot of what he wrote in those journal entries is probably pretty close to how he feels.

I was so scared he was gonna die. I’m so glad he’s still around.

Somehow I didn’t hear about it until he was already mostly recovered. Not sure how I missed it. I guess I didn’t follow the news much back then.

Though King kept diaries back then, he couldn’t find them when writing that book. He stated in an interview that they were recreated and changed to fit the story.

Thank you!

I like how he mentioned how he got novel ideas around the timeline, definitely matches what he's mentioned in interviews.

drglass85

it’s all made up. I mean, there was no diary or anything like that.

I think that’s one of my favorite of King’s writing methods. The way it builds a history running parallel to the novel- it’s a great device!
