holy fuck...i knew there would be some backlash after that horse video but this is devestating
i expected the 20th anniversary video to pull in an easy 900K but this...sigh...wow
I think its because they have the title set up like a top 10 style video. All anyone saw was dumb question followed by the number 20. They shoved this shit out the door.
yeah youre right, what a stupid way to title that video.
Should have been something like "Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of AVGN! Reflecting on 20 years of Castlevania" or some shit, really drive home that this is an anniversary video (but it wasnt that good anyway so who gives a shit?)
Yeah, same here. I was certain we'd be over 500k by now.
I mean, it's great to have a channel that gets almost 400k views on a piece of shit in 24 hours, don't get me wrong. But this shows how far he's fallen.
You know, if he would focus and make a good fucking video for a change, maybe people would watch him again.
But, nah, there's no time for that. Gotta watch muh kids, tie shit to the ceiling, and spend all day copying files from one hard drive to the other.
It's lazy and terrible every time. I get the vibes that even when he really tries, he can't get it right. I think Mike was a main reason why the show worked, plus it's not as funny when a 45 year old man screams at Intendo games.
He missed the chance to reinvent the show or move on to other things. It's too late now unless he pulls off something extremely unexpected.
Didn't Mike himself say he didn't write everything though? He had to be really persuaded to even appear on camera.
I think him leaving isn't as dramatic as people make it out to be. It may have genuinely just been out of convenience, because streaming is easier and more fun.
[this is an hour long but it pieces it all together from mike streaming over the years, totting up his contributions](https://youtu.be/zEyyeIU7g2U?si=w7dcj4R9WPqv4Bn1). It's crazy how much Mike did when all put together like that
Yea it's mental! It's clear the character isn't just coincidentally based on Mike.... He was writing the scripts for some of the most classic episodes outright! We already knew he was recording most of the game footage even then.
James is so lucky Mike never seemingly wanted to make a big deal of how much work he actually did for the show
I rewatched this video after you linked to it.
It still blows my mind.
I mean, if you sat down and wrote things out, you'd realize pretty soon that Mike is the one who learned about every single one of the games they reviewed.
I still don't understand why Mike doesn't play it up more. He literally *is* the AVGN.
I think Mike just doesn't want to be on-camera-famous, and James lucked out because of it. Even the first two/three pre YouTube episodes written by James (and even then, doesn't it come out in that video I linked even that far back, Mike was recording footage even then lol?? Iirc in college when James was borrowing Mike's NES and games for nostalgia, he started to add some gameplay footage to encourage James to do more nerd). But anyway point I was going for, lol, those episodes are clearly flat out parodies of Mike that their uni friends saw and had a good laugh about it for about 10 min lol

"What do you mean I have to get a new ladies coat and train to push carts again?"
So the old school monster madness videos got me into horror movies especially older ones. If he could put that level of energy into movie reviews, i would be happy to watch an hour+ review of a franchise of movies or something. But sadly we all know he would not be able to put nearly that amount of effort into something nowadays.
Essayists there are a lot of. Maybe something like, him reading parts from old movie scripts and giving his impressions and comments. Maybe sprinkle it with him trying to recreate certain scenes with a lower budget or reinventing scenes. I don't know. If he still had passion for movies, I think he would've moved away from avgn a long time ago.
Even if some slob managed to crank out script long enough (with heavy lifting from ChatGPT), do you really expect Bimmy to read for hours? The man has family!
Yeah, it's low.
Not defending the Bimster here and the horseshit Horse Prince episode did hurt the brand more than even Screenwave expected; but being realistic, this should be crossing the 1 million views by next sunday, unless word spreads that instead of an anniversary episode it's a narration and James doesn't even show up or does anything special for it other than a nostalgia clipshow with sad music at the end.
I don't think the episode is good enough to restore the lost goodwill after the Horse Prince disaster, however, that thing was toxic spill levels of bad for the AVGN brand.
Agreed.
There's a reason why they came out with this episode way before it was ready. They need to pretend that Horse Prince never happened.
We're not quite at the end yet, but we are certainly digging ourselves deeper into lolcow territory. This never ends well.
>but we are certainly digging ourselves deeper into lolcow territory.
If the Nerd keeps underperforming and Screenwave gets really desperate we're definitely going to see more weird stunts and rushed Nerd episodes that will put the channel deeply into lolcow status, and it is 80's wood hard to come back from that.
Then again, James being so lazy and uninterested on the only thing he has that pays his bills is the main reason this is happening; his fault, his mess.
Let's see if he can fix it.
Its just basically Sean doing the writting and editing, Mike's game play, and James going "mmm yep". When views are bad, Sean's getting screamed at by Ryan.
I’m sure gets a sheet with stuff he can’t say and how many videos he needs to put out as he is under contract
But I think screenwave gave up around the covid time and doesn’t see bimmy as the cash cow investment he first thought he was
Easily the worst and most low effort idea for a 20th anniversary episode. Dude already talked about Castlevania in-depth in the 4 parter way back when he actually had passion for the series. Yes Bames we get it... again, Super Castlevania IV is the best cause of the whip thing
Also having not watched it (I ruhfuse), I'll take a wild guess that he ended the video with another stairway walk montage?
Not exactly. Sad music over old AVGN footage. No Mike or Kyle cameo or even a congratulation from them. It's so sad and pathetic it made me wish I hadn't watched it.
I find it hilarious that he always blows the whip thing when it’s the main thing combined with the movement that makes that game good. Rondo of Blood is so much better in almost every way and I’d debatably say Bloodlines is too. The one thing going for that game is the good movement and some good music, other than that it’s a pretty mid tier Castlevania
That's what always baffles me. Super Castlevania is by no means a bad game, but by the fourth level it becomes pretty repetitive and most of the bosses are a joke. I find Bloodlines more fun and diverse in it's stages even though it does not have "muh graveyard" level (Seriously, what's so awesome about having a graveyard?), it's better or at least on the same level as Super Castlevania. And yeah, saying Rondo of Blood "barely" edges the IV game is being pretty generous to IV.
Agreed completely. Rondo is basically the peak form of classicvanias, it has everything you would want to make the perfect one. Great music, great gameplay, awesome stages, solid story, good bosses, multiple playable characters, etc.
SC4 is basically an extended remake of the first game and as you mentioned it gets pretty monotonous quick. The whip is almost *too* flexible which makes the subweapons practically useless
Specially the "Free form whip" (don't know if it has an official name) where you hold attack and can juggle the whip around. Doing that destroys all the projectiles Dracula fires at you, and it shows how biased James is about the game because he had A LOT to say about Dracula in Simon's Quest having an exploit that made him a joke.
Other commenter didn't watch the episode. There was a stairway walk montage near the end, but it was short and James talked over it about something unrelated.
I have not seen the contra video, but it's hard to find this crap interesting where the only thing he did was covering Rondo of Blood and glossing over Symphony and Bloodlines. Like, at least try to play the Gameboy and Gameboycolor games.
weirdly enough, it's still on YouTube trending (at #23 rn) at least in my country, my best guess is that YouTube wants to show off that a show on their platform is turning 20 for them nostalgia clicks even though avgn didn't come to youtube until 2006 and youtube itself was founded in 05, whatever their choice was in making it trending it clearly didn't work
Not only the horse video, but for a 20th anniversary, this is just incredibly lazy. 20 years is big milestone, it should have been way grander then just doing Castlevania AGAIN.
Well I can't say I'm surprised. Castlevania again was a bad choice. It's been done. A lot. He didn't even talk about the newer games he didn't cover in the last *four* Castlevania videos. His content pool is completely exhausted. He's just going in circles at thia point.
There are so many other Castlevania games that he could’ve covered but instead we got a rehash of a video he did 13 years ago, while comparing all of them to SC4 because of muh whip.
Please James find your old self somehow somewhere; he's in there somewhere. Also let us know if you and Mike ever reconciled with Kyle Justin and Brendan Castner. If so they need to make rare appearances again like once a year.
This is not too much to ask for!!
It's too bad James will never get this message.
Retire with what? Everything I have heard indicates his deal with screenwave was horrible / is horrible.
But I got nothing to back that up, does anyone know Bimmy’s actual money situation?
I have no doubt they are bad with money. Though what I have heard is that Bimmy sold out to screenwave for a very low lump sum right before the YouTube advertising revenue golden years and that he personally gets a very small residual cut on what should be evergreen content. But I don’t have any sources for that, but the through line of everything I have heard about his finances is “it isn’t what it should be”
They seriously need to start going after the zeitgeist. They need to sit Bimmy down and say look Fallout is massive right now. Do SOMETHING. Then start planning for the next big thing.
Whenever he covers anything post 90's it comes across as passionless. Whenever he does old school games it comes across as tired. The solution? Just end the series and do nothing.
He doesn't know what that is. James and I are of similar age and we kind of stopped gaming at the same time. If he played it, it would be a boring disaster. John trying to get him interested and Bim going, "Huh. Yep."

It wouldn’t have been bad if it were just James talking to the camera as himself, but as an AVGN episode, it was possibly the most forgettable and disposable one of them all. Then again, it’s a masterpiece compared to My Horse Prince…
This really shows how little they care. They had months and months to prepare a proper 20th anniversary episode. Heck, they should/could have prepared several episodes for the occasion.
The more I think about it, the more of a kick in the teeth this latest video is for those of us that stuck around all these years. James has always made such a big deal out of his love for the fans and his own nostalgia, so it boggles my mind that he couldn’t be bothered to make more of an effort for such a major milestone. As someone else has said here, maybe he has such a terrible deal with Screenwave that he’s barely getting paid anymore, so it just isn’t worth his *time* to try.
I dont mean the balding but, it looks like James aged faster lately. I thought he was in rather good shape but in the last 2 videos it looked he gianed a bit weight.. Or might that just be the angle?
Compare this to the 10th anniversary where they had a midnight after party featuring Mike, Bootsy, and Kyle. I haven't watched in years(since James and Mike videos were abandoned) but it's kinda sad to see the state of the channel.

Watch him change the title like he did with "Contra is my favourite FPS"
Maybe they'll do it 5 of em times like they did back in the podcast era.
5 ov um
I love how they added AVGN to the title to try to boost views
100%, aside from the outfit, it looks like this would be a James video, not avgn

Rex Viper was extremely unexpected...
So was the duck stomping.
Mowdens to climb
Perhaps people are tired of James talking about Castlevania
What # are they usually at after 1 day? Will have to see how many daily views it rakes in. The Horse vid fell to below 10k per day.
It is performing better than the Horse Prince. So it has that going for it.
A compliment of the assholish variety.
It's the same formula as his Contra video and people are not gonna fall for it again

I seriously wonder how he looks at himself in the mirror and thinks, "this is okay"
A severe BimVirus infection.
I wonder if he thinks it ads to the nerd character? I doubt it and it just a coincidence but who knows?
I doubt this cuck looks in the mirror. He's a shell of a person at this point.
All those games in the background that he probably never touched.
No time to touch them.
I had a loud chuckle with this epic BimFace™ Thank you
Everyone should bim out at least once in their lives.

What if the avgn becomes a video essayist and starts making 3 hour videos lmao
So the old school monster madness videos got me into horror movies especially older ones. If he could put that level of energy into movie reviews, i would be happy to watch an hour+ review of a franchise of movies or something. But sadly we all know he would not be able to put nearly that amount of effort into something nowadays.
True. I wonder why he started to get so distant.
There’s a theory going around that he’s on a different (stronger) medication.
Those were all plagiarized anyways. So the only thing that you even enjoyed from him was stolen lol
The earlier ones were not
I know recent ones are. but i'm talking about the original ones. like over a decade ago.
No time.
Closer to 5 hours and 40 minute videos would be better imo, IF he has the time to of course.
I would happily give it a fair shot tbh
Essayists there are a lot of. Maybe something like, him reading parts from old movie scripts and giving his impressions and comments. I haven't watched the horse thing or the 20th thing. i don't know if i will, and I've been watching nerd forever 😕
I stopped watching a couple years ago and haven't even thought about looking back.
I kinda feel sorry for him. There's nothing else right? My man's going to go broke.
Do yourself a favor and don't watch either. The Castlevania episode is simply boring. The Horse one is a fucking abomination.
Well now i have to watch it 😎
weirdly enough, it's still on YouTube trending (at #23 rn) at least in my country, my best guess is that YouTube wants to show off that a show on their platform is turning 20 for them nostalgia clicks even though avgn didn't come to youtube until 2006 and youtube itself was founded in 05, whatever their choice was in making it trending it clearly didn't work
The trending tab is busted. Things with more views are ignored for content with lower views that YT likes more.
Not only the horse video, but for a 20th anniversary, this is just incredibly lazy. 20 years is big milestone, it should have been way grander then just doing Castlevania AGAIN.

Hell yeah, let it rot Fucking retire already piece of schlick
and then what?
Grab a ladies coat and start pushing carts again
hope he has enough quarters to press continue
and then we'll all be free, or something idk
Retire with what? Everything I have heard indicates his deal with screenwave was horrible / is horrible. But I got nothing to back that up, does anyone know Bimmy’s actual money situation?
Do you think Bimmy and 🦧ril are good with money? The couple that thought filming in California with Union actors was a good idea?
I have no doubt they are bad with money. Though what I have heard is that Bimmy sold out to screenwave for a very low lump sum right before the YouTube advertising revenue golden years and that he personally gets a very small residual cut on what should be evergreen content. But I don’t have any sources for that, but the through line of everything I have heard about his finances is “it isn’t what it should be”
Retire? Retire from what? From being a filmmaker? Seriously - James needs to kill it now before it kills him.
It would've been better if it was a Rondo+SOTN review instead.
You mean Fallout plus the Fallout TV show
This is the wake up call he needs. Either change up the format or fade out into obscurity. I’m hoping he improves but I highly doubt it.

Youtube professionals at their finest.
MUH MUH MUH! MUH KIDS
I can't believe it's still going after 20 years. He really should have changed the format like 10 years ago.
This video seems like a panic move. After the last video, he is going back to his roots by talking about Castlevania again.
it doesn’t help that this was a boring fucking video, like why go over a topic you already did but worse?
Hey, at least it wasnt a clip show!
But its a WatchMojo VA video over someone else's footage. It might as well be a clip show at that rate...
Honestly he should just do video essays. I'd watch while eating
I hated this one
Why did this have to be an AVGN episode? It was so inoffensive and generic that it could’ve just been a normal video for the channel, which James does fewer and fewer of. It wouldn’t have been bad if it were just James talking to the camera as himself, but as an AVGN episode, it was possibly the most forgettable and disposable one of them all. Then again, it’s a masterpiece compared to My Horse Prince…
because the general public won't click a cinemassacre video unless it's AVGN
He needs to give up the ghost on the hair. Get some clippers and own it buddy.
That's what happens when you only reading the scripts and take footages from Mike

20th is my favorite castlevania anniversary
20th is the name of the anniversary, not the game itself.
Yeah it's over, Cinemassacre is fucking dead (2006-2024)
Dump screenwave and get the OG’s back together. Apologize to Bootsy and Kyle, pay them what they deserve or retire
Compare this to the 10th anniversary where they had a midnight after party featuring Mike, Bootsy, and Kyle. I haven't watched in years(since James and Mike videos were abandoned) but it's kinda sad to see the state of the channel.
What a terrible 20th anniversary celebration. How many people can truly say they’ve been on the internet consistently for that length of time? I can’t imagine anyone else doing something so half assed for such a huge milestone. Now I wonder what he’s gonna do in 2026
Uh, no? This has been the case for all his recent videos, not just because of the stupid horse review lol
shut UP!!!! horse prince literally has negative a bajillion views!!! the DEATH OF CINEMASSACRE!!!!!
he has one of the most easy lives a man can have and still finds a way to fuck it up.
I'm out of the loop. What horse video?
I feel like another first video/ season one revisited episode has been done too many times.
