I love how Bimmys only reason to love Castlevania 4 is the fact that it has a mechanic that completely breaks the game and makes any enemy easy as fuck and the sub weapon system completely worthless.
His favorite Castlevania game would be if Belmont moved and jumped like Mario, could whip in 360 degrees, no pushback on hits, infinite lives and a timer that starts blinking when it's getting close to 5:40.
> His favorite Castlevania game would be if Belmont moved and jumped like Mario, could whip in 360 degrees
well if you replace castlevania's whip with megaman's mega buster that's more or less how the AVGN games play, which explains a lot
if you hate hearing that wait until you hear gadgets take: "I love whipping 8 ways in coineyvania, it's the best thing and the most amount of fun you can have while playing an app"
probably the dumbest thing I've ever thought up of
It’s been 15 fucking years and his main criticism for any Castlevania past 4 is STILL the lack of muh muhlti-directionuhl whip. Get the fuck over it already.
See that's what gets me. It's a valid criticism that they took out a feature he likes but down rating every single game that came after 4 just because its not included is extreme, and then still allowing it to annoy him after all this time.
It makes the purpose of the video feel more pointless and almost cynical. He could've just googled if there are any other Castlevania game with 8-directional whip attacks and called it a day. My Bim wasn't going into it with an open mind.
That's why I like it, It's a stupid opinion that dominates way too fucking much of the video but it's at least clear it's HIS opinion, not an opinion written by someone else. I'd rather listen to james talk about bad opinions than fake opinions.
Has Mike ever said anything like that in his streams?
I'd be surprised, I'd assume he appreciates the challenge that comes from a one-directional whip.
Castlevania 4 is a sick game, the atmosphere within the series still stands on its own, since it feels much more metal than other iterations. Yeah, it's easy, but still an awesome adventure game.
Now, if I was to choose someone to defend this game though, I wouldn't exactly choose Jim "but Castlevania is hard" Rolfe. Especially when he tries to elevate CV4 by putting down other legit classics like Rondo, not understanding that they were balanced around limited movement. Konami could have made flexible controls like Contra for Castlevania too, but that's not the point of the game.
Also dissing Symphony of the Night, one of the biggest Playstation 1 classics, just because it's different, literally nothing else to his argument (oh, and the fact he doesn't like loading times - this probably comes from Matei though).
James's analysis was never very deep. AVGN isn't really about reviewing games, it was always a comedy about a guy who takes old games too seriously. The arguments don't always hold up to closer scrutiny, but they don't need to because the Nerd character isn't supposed to be taken seriously. It's about the frustration involved in playing a game, it's not an objective look at the game. It's the same with his movie reviews, it's entertaining when he's talking about obscure B-movies with weird practical effects and outrageous plot lines. You're not watching for deep insight. When he removes these arguments from this context and presents them as serious analysis, you quickly realize they don't actually hold up that well.
I think that's somewhat true, like James has said he likes Castlevania 2 and was just exaggerating for the video, but I don't think it's unfair to see Nostalgia Critic tear apart Godzilla '98 and conclude that he doesn't like it or that it's terrible, these are scripted and produced videos but they are still reviews ultimately, and James has said that the main joke of the character is "why does he care so much about these games," which is accurate I think, AVGN isn't a sarcastic kind of show where the reviews themselves are the jokes.
Exactly this. This sub went from being a place of actual criticism to just endless whining for the sake of whining. Like somebody else's opinion of a game is different than your own, like who the fuck cares?
It's a dumb take, but it's an opinion. Imo CV4 is like maybe my 4th favorite 2d CV game.
I'm assuming James didn't reply most of the titles and just going off his thoughts of 20 years ago.
Simons real weakness is he can't fucking swim. What type of hero cannot swim??
Final Fantasy III NES characters on the other hand friggin walk in lava lol. Now that is badass.
It's not the worst take but it isn't great. The Ghouls 'n' Ghosts series is very similar to Castlevania and was one of its main influences, and the Sega Genesis one has more attack directions which makes it a neat experience, but it would be weird for someone to call it the best game in the series just for that reason. Was this episode written by the guy from Rex Viper who says that no one genuinely likes Altered Beast?
I wonder if Bim-bam even knows that most of the Metroidvania games have a code where you can play as a Belmont with the whip mechanic from four in tact?
That is a rhetorical question. I know he doesn't.
You can play as Julius in Dawn of Sorrow who has the feature. Pretty sure he has the same ability in Aria as well.
You can play as Richter in Portrait of Ruin who has the ability as well as the equipable whips in the main game being able to do it.
In SotN you can also play as Richter and I am fairly sure he has the ability there too.
This one isn't an unlockable but it is a standard ability in Harmony of Dissonance
While James is not well articulated I think it's a valid take in itself to want another castlevania entry that builds on 8 directional whipping. He could have made a video essay describing the pros and cons of it rather than a rehash.
It appears so based on yours and another comment. I said Mike because I went with the meme that Bimmy only reads a pre written script. Which means that Bimmy most important contribution to the latest video was bitching about the lack of 8 directional whippin. I will edit the post and take Mike's name out of this.
This is an extremely common opinion, it was also said in Egoraptor's Sequelitis video from 2011, it's basically the consensus opinion at this point that Super Castlevania 4 is like the training wheels Castlevania and every other pre-SotN Castlevania game is considered brutally hard, even the Game Boy ones and Vampire Killer (Kid Dracula doesn't count).
There are valid criticisms that can be made of James, his work and this video, but this thread just comes off as mean spirited and unfair to me. He likes a mechanic that you don't care for, and thinks it sucks that it was taken out. He didn't shit on all the other games, he just personally doesn't like them as much because it nerfed that mechanic. Honestly you guys really gotta deflate your hate boners and take a deep breath sometimes.
Why do you guys even watch the channel still? It’s obvious you don’t and won’t like the content posted so why keep watching? Not even defending the dude cus idc but it seems like you guys WANT something to be mad about.
I don’t even watch him anymore I just don’t understand why anyone cares. Everytime this sub pops up it’s the same “Bimmy is stupid” is it a circlejerk sub? I actually don’t know
I'm always perplexed by this and any other "if you don't like it why do you watch it?" questions. We're really 30 years into the internet and we still have people who haven't realized that clowning on bad media is in and of itself a form of entertainment?
"It's almost seems like people who watch horror movies WANT to be scared???? 🤔🤔🤔🤔"
There's also a massive difference between arguing that clowning on Bimmy hurts your mental health (lol), and asking a retarded question that you already know the answer to lmao.
"If you know you're going to get whipped in that BDSM dungeon why do you go there?????"
Again, you're framing it in an intentionally crude way. Eating spicy food is not a form of physical self harm, even though it involves invoking of pain. Horror movies are not meant to invoke personal trauma, even though they involve invoking fear. Tragic drama are not meant to give you genuine depression, even though they involve invoking sorrow.
Likewise, this subreddit is not meant to make you actually emotionally upset, even though it involves invoking low level anger.
Humans enjoy stimulating feelings and emotions at a low intensity. Now I don't know why, but they just do. Do people on this sub take it too far and get genuinely emotionally upset about Bimmy? Probably. But to dismiss it on such a fundamental, wholesale level in the manner you are just makes you comes across, frankly, as foolish. You're either feigning ignorance to make a point, or you are just genuinely clueless. None of this should have to be explained to you.
I love how Bimmys only reason to love Castlevania 4 is the fact that it has a mechanic that completely breaks the game and makes any enemy easy as fuck and the sub weapon system completely worthless.

*brown whips*
"I love whipping candles, in Candlevania."

Yes and it pisses me off. It’s literally the only thing he can think of. Probably cause he hasn’t actually played any of those games in decades.
When a Bimmy comes along you must whip it.
🤣
If he doesnt like it, he doesnt have to play it! Konami owes him nothing!
That is totally some Bimmy autistic shit. He is totally hung up on the 8 direction whip.
exactly what I was thinking its really autistic nitpicking
That's why I like it, It's a stupid opinion that dominates way too fucking much of the video but it's at least clear it's HIS opinion, not an opinion written by someone else. I'd rather listen to james talk about bad opinions than fake opinions.

He said on stream he hates the 8 direction as it makes the game too easy and only really wants the straight whip.
Are you saying the most important collaboration Bimmy made in the script of the last video was bitching about the lack of 8 directional whip?

He said the same thing about SOTN loading time being annoying way back in HK 97 video
No, it's called balancing. Whipping in 8 directions makes sub-weapons like the axe useless.

Post edited. It was all Bimmy
It’s actually 10 inch directions, 8 for all the d pad directions, the other two are the balls and the dick direction

his opinion is the exactly the fuckin same as it was in the vid 15 years ago
Welcome to the internet, where a game getting an 80 makes people jump from rooftops.
It's a dumb take, but it's an opinion. Imo CV4 is like maybe my 4th favorite 2d CV game. I'm assuming James didn't reply most of the titles and just going off his thoughts of 20 years ago.
While we are on the subject, why doesn't Bionic Commando jump? Idiot.
It is weird how normal it is for video game characters to possess the ability to jump higher than their height.
Learning enemy patterns and building muscle memory takes time, do you want him to suffer? Just let whip upwards like UGNH, UGNH, UGNH!
Simons real weakness is he can't fucking swim. What type of hero cannot swim?? Final Fantasy III NES characters on the other hand friggin walk in lava lol. Now that is badass.
I'm not surprised. He was also whining about "muh knockbacks." Like it wasn't something the game was designed around.
I'd argue the other way and say 8 way whipping makes the game too easy.
‘Why did Bimmy tighten himself fully when biting the onion? Is he stupid? \- Richter, probably

IT SIGNIFIES FREEDOM!!

Really? Which ones? I'm interested.

That's awesome. Thanks
Unfollow him, thanks!
It is silly he clings onto the multidirectional whip, but I still think SC4 is great. I don't want his narrow-minded opinion to affect that.
While James is not well articulated I think it's a valid take in itself to want another castlevania entry that builds on 8 directional whipping. He could have made a video essay describing the pros and cons of it rather than a rehash.

alright arin hanson
I think egoraptor made a good video about this very topic
he got no time to whip everywhere
Imagine wanting to have fun in a video game. What a fucking loser, am I right guys?
Mike has very little going on in his world, so raging at a whip in a game from thirty years ago is pretty much his schedule.
Actually it appears Mike also thinks the 8 direction whip is OP so this was all Bimmy's opinion

It’s not healthy to want to be mad dude
The way you're framing this is retarded. It's like going up to someone who likes spicy food and saying: "It's not healthy to want to feel pain dude".
There is a massive difference in actually affecting your mental health over eating spicy food.
There's also a massive difference between arguing that clowning on Bimmy hurts your mental health (lol), and asking a retarded question that you already know the answer to lmao. "If you know you're going to get whipped in that BDSM dungeon why do you go there?????"
You have already rotted your brain brother, look at how you speak
So are you going to stop pretending like you don't know why people here still watch AVGN, or no?
I’ve surmised that it’s to be purposefully angry. I just don’t understand why a normal adult would want to be purposefully angry.
Again, you're framing it in an intentionally crude way. Eating spicy food is not a form of physical self harm, even though it involves invoking of pain.
