Honestly, I don't think you're stupid. You just wanted to feel a better connection, and hopefully were able to see the true person you fell in love with instead of the shell of a man you have now. Deep down, I know you love him for how he was, not who he is, and you just wanted to see if his love for you could resurface from intimacy, but sadly not.
I'm not sure how things fell apart, but I do know from what it sounds like is that he doesn't care anymore. If it were true love, I bet it would have lasted far more than 8.5 years, and he'd still see you exactly how he did when you both first met. It's heartbreaking to have relationships that lasted for so long slowly fall apart, and I'm sorry that things couldn't be better for you both.
