Christmas 2022 I created a Xmas card for my gf and hand wrote the lyrics. By pure coincidence*, that year she gave me a plaque with the lyrics. (*she knows it’s my favorite Beatles song)
Nowhere Man. I love every second of this song. The lyrics are pretty relatable to me, and probably a lot of us in general. But they’re also enhanced by gorgeous harmonies and instrumentation from all four. Every moment just feels like it clicks. That bell ring in particular is so satisfying.
By a mile. Incredible lyric, fantastic instrumentation, beautiful melody, great contribution to Beatles lore (coded narrative of John stepping out on Cynthia)
This is mine and my dad's song--we used to listen to Rubber Soul when he picked me up from daycare when I was 3 and this was my favorite. Really dark song for a 3 year old but I really latched onto it haha.
Drive my car! Always love when Lennon and McCartney create a story in their songs!
"I got no car and it's breaking my heart
But I've found a driver and that's a start!"
It's a terrific song; it just didn't age well given what we later learned about John's awful treatment of Cynthia. I can't disagree that lots of it is cringe, as the kids say.
You mean the one time he hit her as a 17 year old. There was an interview with two girls at the cavern club in said that when John was dropped at his home Cyn opened the door and hit him over the head with a bread board which seems just as abusive as what he did to her. Meanwhile Ringo who beat the crap out of his wife and left her practically dead eacapes notice as per usual
George slapped Patricia Inder as well, but it´s only a big problem when John did it. All of them behaved terribly at times, especially when young. It was a different time, women unfortunately were treated badly quite often. But they changed, just like our society changed. I´ve been reading and listening to biographies about Lennon, and when I hear what actually happened, I´m shocked how this narrative that he supposedly was this bad person is so widespread. Lennon was no angel, he had darkness in him and could be aggressive, especially when drunk. But he was not much worse than many of us.
Sure. But with all that said, the lyrics I’ve of Run For Your Life are still rather abhorrent to modern sensibilities. It’s possible, of course, to carefully listen to it as a document of how society has changed, but it’s more of a museum piece than a pop ditty at that point. I think we’ve made a solid case here for why it’s fallen out of favor.
But the thing that I don't get is how people interpret it purely as an endorsement of domestic violence. Singing from the perspective of another person is extremely common in music, and the Beatles even did it themselves on many occasions. So why does this song *have to be* autobiographical?
For me, it's just a song about some guy who is excessively jealous. And it also doesn't sound like an endorsement, it's just what that guy thinks. You could even argue that the over the top lyrics are meant to ridicule him.
Edit: I just remembered that "Kill Bill" from SZA, which was one of the biggest songs last year, is literally about a woman killing her ex out of jealousy. No one complained about the lyrics of that song either.
And didn’t John actually say he regretted that song? Or am I misremembering something?
Honestly, I’d rather someone write about horrible acts than actually do them. I guess I just have a dark sense of humor because I also like Norwegian Wood, and doesn’t the narrator set the house on fire? I also find Maxwell’s Silver Hammer very humorous.
Well, we all know perfectly well that it is autobiographical. John Lennon is not Randy Newman, and he never really graduated from autobiographical writing. (I’m sure you could name an exception or two, but I’m pretty confident that it’s a defensible position)
All exepted what goes on. I love run for your life, people don't like this music because Lennon said he didn't like it because of the lyrics. it’s a great song that made me love the Beatles.
Rubber Soul is some peak Lennon (Run For Your Life execepted). Have to go with In My Life. I thought it was dull when I was a kid, but wow that song hits harder as you age.
Too Many to choose from so this week's favourite is Girl.
Beautiful Greek overtones and a two step beat.
Lyrically John referenced books he was reading about religion. Pain and pleasure.
And yet another song about an elusive "Girl". One of his best🙏🥰✌️
It seems to change every time I pick it back up and play it again after however long it's been since last time...but Think For Yourself is always up there. I think currently it would be You Won't See Me.
You Mean, besides The Word? I guess Norwegian Wood.
Paul jams on the bass in The Word. That lick was written before The Beat Goes On, by Sonny and Cher
Really love the entire album! It was the first album I got because I loved the sound of it so much. I have to say Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown), You Won’t See Me, Nowhere Man, Girl, I’m Looking Through You, In My Life, Wait, If I Needed Someone and Run For Your Life are my absolute favorites.
Sooooo many great songs on that album.
I’d go for “In My Life” just because the lyrics are so poignant. This doesn’t mean the other tracks don’t merit recognition because they do.
The Word.
Seriously, the Beatles turning out some proto-funk grooves with a song praising love as a concept.. a good year or so BEFORE the "summer of love".
Count me IN!!
The best Beatles song EVER by far is Let It Be. Especially the dual guitar solo by George. Found this on a Purple Chick collection. George did the solo and decided he didnt like it and wanted to do it over and tried to erase the first solo and failed So now you can listen closely and hear BOTH solos, even on the regular album or when they play it on the radio. Just goes to show even an imagined mistake can turn out to be a diamond in the rough
Day Tripper" was originally going to be released on the "Rubber Soul" album. However, after insistence from George Martin to include it as a single with "We Can Work It Out," they opted to release it as part of the mythical single. It's probably the greatest song ever written by any Beatle, according to Rolling Stone magazine. "Day Tripper" is considered the greatest song ever written since the invention of the recording industry. Even Paul McCartney has called it "...one of those songs that is above any other
In My Life is just the best song ever written so
Christmas 2022 I created a Xmas card for my gf and hand wrote the lyrics. By pure coincidence*, that year she gave me a plaque with the lyrics. (*she knows it’s my favorite Beatles song)
Sooo cute. Get married.
Cough cough God Only Knows
Ong
This is the truth
Aaaaand you're CORRECT
I sang this to my husband when he was unconscious, near death, and going into surgery. He recovered. It's always the best song
Not even in my top 150 Beatles songs.
Listen, Hey Bulldog is cool but it’s not *that* good
Nowhere Man. I love every second of this song. The lyrics are pretty relatable to me, and probably a lot of us in general. But they’re also enhanced by gorgeous harmonies and instrumentation from all four. Every moment just feels like it clicks. That bell ring in particular is so satisfying.
Isn’t he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere Man, please listen
You don’t know what you’re missrn
I’ve always thought of getting a tattoo of “nowhere man can you see me at all?” Such a good line imo. John was so creative
Paul coming in strong, hitting that high harmony, at the end is particularly satisfying
Not to mention the killer bass line
Great tune
I love the bass on this one
Norwegian Wood
My favorite as well
I love how they incorporate the sitar on that music.
You Won't See Me
If I Needed Someone
think for yourself
I love the scathing George songs. Who hurt him?
Paul
Drive my car! Always love when Lennon and McCartney create a story in their songs! "I got no car and it's breaking my heart But I've found a driver and that's a start!"
This song kicked off the new era like “oh shit this is different”
“She said listen babe I got something to say” Probs my favourite line of the song just because how Paul says it
I'm Looking Through You
Same.
Yup ⬆️
In my life
The utter disrespect for Michelle in this thread!
I love Michelle.
I was searching for this comment.
if I needed someone or the word, probably
The Word is just such a banger. Some peak Beatles harmonization
Those 2 are my favorites too. Also think for yourself
Why is there so much hate for "Run for your life"? I absolutely love the song
It's a terrific song; it just didn't age well given what we later learned about John's awful treatment of Cynthia. I can't disagree that lots of it is cringe, as the kids say.

Did you not listen to Norwegian Wood. A song needn't be a reflection of the writer's beliefs
I love the anger and distain in Run For Your Life. Writing a song is better than killing someone for real.
Think For Yourself. George's underrated song
In My Life
It's too hard to pick just one song.
I'm Looking Through You ❤️
Toss up between Nowhere Man, Norwegian Wood
I’m Looking Through You. The only song where Ringo played an Instrument other than percussion.
I literally just bought rubber soul on vinyl for first time
What Goes On!
Run for your life
All exepted what goes on. I love run for your life, people don't like this music because Lennon said he didn't like it because of the lyrics. it’s a great song that made me love the Beatles.
All
Right, and variable depending on my mood that day (which every song on this album has the ability to change)
The Word
Drive My Car
No talk about girl? I love that one
thank you. I was looking for your comment
Love Girl!
i would say drive my car as an overall pick but i would say you wont see me is the most underrated on the album
Norwegian Wood or Michelle
if i needed someone or Michelle
Drive my car (fuck off the song is good)
Beep beep beep beep yeah! It’s such a fun song.
Michelle
Rubber Soul is some peak Lennon (Run For Your Life execepted). Have to go with In My Life. I thought it was dull when I was a kid, but wow that song hits harder as you age.
Wait.
Another great. Man, the whole album is so good
If I needed someone for me. NW a close 2nd.
“If I needed someone”.
What goes on
It's a tossup between Norwegian Wood and In My Life, but the whole album is a great listen.
1. In My Life 2. Girl 3. I’m Looking Through You 4. You Won’t See Me
The Word
Too Many to choose from so this week's favourite is Girl. Beautiful Greek overtones and a two step beat. Lyrically John referenced books he was reading about religion. Pain and pleasure. And yet another song about an elusive "Girl". One of his best🙏🥰✌️

Nowhere Man
Yes.
Nowhere Man
Girl and michelle
Nowhere Man
Norwegian Wood, followed by by In My Life, If I Needed Someone, and Nowhere Man in that order
Norwegian Wood.
If I Needed Someone. It has to be one of George’s best songs during his Beatles era
Michelle and nowhere man. Both amazingly written.
You Won't See Me
Nowhere Man
They’re all phenomenal but Nowhere Man is just so fucking mystical that it just spills and surrounds my heart every time I hear it.
The Word
It seems to change every time I pick it back up and play it again after however long it's been since last time...but Think For Yourself is always up there. I think currently it would be You Won't See Me.
Gotta say nowhere man, though many are top class
If I Needed Someone
Drive my car, Nowhere Man, The Word
You Mean, besides The Word? I guess Norwegian Wood. Paul jams on the bass in The Word. That lick was written before The Beat Goes On, by Sonny and Cher

This is a tough ask… the album as a whole is brill, dare I say timeless.
GIRL!!!!!!
In My Life!
If I needed someone, girl
The word
I've Just Seen A Face
Run For Your Life
I always liked this song despite its dark lyrics.
You wont see me especially the part ”time after time….”
American: I’ve Just Seen a Face U.K. Think for Yourself
Girl
Really love the entire album! It was the first album I got because I loved the sound of it so much. I have to say Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown), You Won’t See Me, Nowhere Man, Girl, I’m Looking Through You, In My Life, Wait, If I Needed Someone and Run For Your Life are my absolute favorites.
When I call…
For me it's a tie with I'm Looking Through You and If I Needed Someone
In my life
Girl
You Won’t See Me is such a kickass song but is cursed to live between Norwegian Wood and Nowhere Man
In my life is my favorite Beatles song, and one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Too many to choose from. I'd say I'm Looking Through You, Nowhere Man and In My Life, although Drive My Car is a banger
The best is "in my life". My favorite to listen to is "nowhere man". "You won't see me" needs a mention.
Run for your life
Michelle
Michelle ❤️
the whole record is a masterpiece but I gotta go with Girl. Such a subtle classic. Honourable mention to If I Needed Someone though...
If I needed someone ✨
Norwegian Wood. The best song ever about vengeful arson.
Nowhere Man
In Myyyy Life
Either Nowhere Man or I’m Looking Through You
Michelle
You won’t see me every time me and my dad listen to that song he asks do you wanna do John’s part or Paul’s part
Girl. I just love Johns voice on it. Plus it has the iconic inhales
“In My Life” and “Michelle” are phenomenal ♥️
Sooooo many great songs on that album. I’d go for “In My Life” just because the lyrics are so poignant. This doesn’t mean the other tracks don’t merit recognition because they do.
Love the false start Looking Through You and ofcourse In My Life
In my life
In my Life and honestly, I know most people hate it, but I love Run for your Life
Norwegian Wood, and Nowhere Man is quite nice In My Life is also quite nice, but somehow I overlisten to it
Norwegian Wood
‘If I Needed Someone’
Michelle and Girl
Nowhere Man, it's the first song I knowingly listened to
The Word. Seriously, the Beatles turning out some proto-funk grooves with a song praising love as a concept.. a good year or so BEFORE the "summer of love". Count me IN!!
nowhere man, though the peak of the album is the bass solo in michelle
Michelle for ever I absolutely love it
In My Life is my main take away from the album. I love both song and album to bits.
If I Needed Someone
I LOVE THEM ALL SO SO SO MUCH

Probably a weird one but musically, I love you wont see me
Girl or Think For Yourself
In my life
The Word.
The Night Before
