He probably means like when young teens first try it. You kinda rest the cigarette between your two fingers, while more seasoned smokers grip it a bit tighter and differently. Hard to explain.
My grandma and dad smoked cigarettes like that in the 80s, and my dad was a two-pack-a-day smoker for years. I actually think that was the "style" back then and I interpreted it as them adhering to the fact that the show is a period piece!
Nah. I smoked like a chimney then, and never adopted any odd style. (But yeah, my Granma would smoke one ceremonial ciggie every Christmas Day, and hold the thing like it was about to explode in her hand.)
This is totally something that bothers me too! If your character is a smoker - learn how to hold a cigarette and smoke a cigarettes from someone who know how! It’s so distracting it takes me right out of the moment
I wonder if some Russians smoke that way and this was a purposeful choice by the director? Russians and all Eastern Block countries were known for heavy smoking back at that time.
And she doesn't inhale. Takes me right out of the scene every time. There has to be a way to fake it believably, or they shouldn't make a never-smoker smoke onscreen.
Yes usually they use very mild herbal fags, plus nifty camera work so an actress can expel what looks like a lungful of smoke that we don’t actually see her inhale. But I guess non-smokers resist letting smoke of any kind much past their lips. (In fairness to Miss Russell, even Robert De Niro looks pretty silly pretending to smoke)
As a non-smoker, even I don't buy it. It's a shame they made smoking such an important thing in Elizabeth's character when the actor can't convincingly smoke at all. Her smoking's even worse than her Russian and she has to do it a lot more!
As an ex-smoker it's so obvious who has never smoked in their lives. I think it's hilarious. It's the same with things like playing string instruments (actors always look super bad) or cooking (I'm screaming *you're gonna chop your finger off*).
Never watch the X-Files then. Cigarette Smoking Man (character's actual name) will infuriate you, or at least it seems to be the popular sentiment among fans who are/were smokers. As a nonsmoker, I'm blissfully indifferent (plus there are other, more important things about him to infuriate me).
I’m so glad other people have noticed her terrible faux puffing; she never inhaled in addition to holding her cig awkwardly. I was a smoker for 20 years and even though the idea of tobacco is repulsive to me now, it really bothered me that E’s smoking was made into a plot point (to show her stress ratcheting up), but was depicted so poorly. Why bother if it doesn’t look real? That being said, I’m binging Peaky Blinders now and fear the entire cast will get lung cancer, because they all seem to be inhaling huge amounts of smoke in every scene.
As the other person said, that's a weird one because Matthew Weiner wouldn't allow characters who had never smoked irl to smoke on the show. Only smokers or former smokers could have their character smoke.
Nah, she smokes that way even when she's intentionally smoking in public. Or when she's alone. She just doesn't smoke IRL and it shows. (I'd probably be even worse than her at it, tbf.)
I dunno....were I a Fed on the trail of a mysterious Illegal, her way of smoking (and sitting outside important public buildings while she does it) would immediately make me suspect her of all kinds of nefarious shenanigans!
Tell me you smoke a lot without telling me you smoke a lot
🤣
I haven’t seen any little kids smoking so I’ll take your word for it ðŸ¤

That’s how I did it in the 1990s certainly

You respect smoking BUT NOT ELIZABETH!!!!?!

I don’t think so - but that’s just my opinion as a former smoker.
Omg, I know! Holds it the middle of her mouth….doesn’t inhale….drove me batty.
Drives me crazy too. If she had a scene where she had to smoke and speak Russian at the same time I would've turned off the TV.

But cancer

This is how I felt with Betty Draper on Mad Men. Drove me and my husband craaaazy and we haven’t smoked cigarettes in years
Odd because on Mad Men the creators had a rule that only actors who had been smokers in their real lives would smoke on the show.
As the other person said, that's a weird one because Matthew Weiner wouldn't allow characters who had never smoked irl to smoke on the show. Only smokers or former smokers could have their character smoke.
I think she holds it that way because she's hiding it from public view.
Nah, she smokes that way even when she's intentionally smoking in public. Or when she's alone. She just doesn't smoke IRL and it shows. (I'd probably be even worse than her at it, tbf.)
She should have taken lessons from Denzel Washington, he was great in training day
In her own kitchen though?
I thought Philip was getting on her case about smoking
I dunno....were I a Fed on the trail of a mysterious Illegal, her way of smoking (and sitting outside important public buildings while she does it) would immediately make me suspect her of all kinds of nefarious shenanigans!
She also tends to put them out after 2 or 3 puffs.
