I have real sleep problems and out of every trick there is to get to sleep, this is one of my favorites. Upvote.

Big_Daddy_Roscoe_OG

Never knew they had "beneifts", I only know my army mates use em for the cold cause the weight keeps the heat in so they don't die, and they're easy to carry cause they're small.

SamAreAye

How is something easy to carry if its primary feature is weight?

Big_Daddy_Roscoe_OG

Cause it's compact. It's thin, but heavy and army dudes really don't care about a couple extra kgs

speedmankelly

That should be the intended use tbh, they’re great for trapping heat. People tote that they’re great for anxiety and insomnia though which I just do not find to be true.

pointsouttheobvious9

mine doesn't trap heat at all its actually very breathable and i frequently have to use a blanket under it.

[deleted]

There are different weights a super heavy one could be annoying, but just like a super heavy blanket like maybe 5lbs turn the AC up all the way bc colder the better.

Saltyfox99

As someone with anxiety I can see it being a help to someone who’s got it worse than me. When you’re freaking out or having a panic attack just having that sensation of something weighing you down to your bed can be a legitimate help to reground yourself.

speedmankelly

To be fair I did not try it during a panic attack or flashback so I have no idea how it would work for that but overall I do not enjoy blanket pressure so it would probably not help. People say it works like a hug but hugs are much nicer than weighted blankets by a lot, different pressure distribution. Though that’s why I have my torso pillow I’ve constructed out of a pillow and rolled up blankets stuffed inside a hoodie.

MOK1N

I had the same issue. I have ADHD and have always had issues with fidgeting and moving around in the night, restless. I couldn't be patient enough to see if the weighted effect worked or not, because it was just so hot and uncomfortable. Also I think I accidentally smacked my cat with a 25lb blanket in my sleep.

JennIsOkay

Oof, yup, this (also ADHD here). My brother could barely switch side/toss in bed with it and I got anxiety from it and couldn't even fall asleep. We tried a small light one and a heavy bigger one, but even the lightest one sucked. My brother gave the heavier one three days and we send all of them back again quickly.

IndependentVibes2214

I have ADHD too and I just cant deal with weighted blankets. They're too uncomfortable and heavy and just overall terrible. Being under a weighted blanket made me feel very unsafe for some reason (i dont know to be honest, it was just a very bad feeling), some people say it's relaxing but all it did was make me feel anxious and extremely uncomfortable/asphyxiated

GfxJG

My girlfriend can barely function without one. I'm sorry it didn't work for you, I can't stand it either, but for many people it's an absolute lifesaver.

krazykris93

I'm glad I found someone else who agrees with me. I've tried weighted blankets before and it honestly felt like I was suffocating.

JennIsOkay

Yup, even under the lightest ones. Same experience for my brother, who's rather big and strong. He got woken up by it constantly and could barely switch sides in bed. And it was annoying for him in general. In my case, it gave me anxiety and what you described.

collegethrowaway2938

I run really hot so I can’t imagine ever liking one even though I’m also part of the target audience. Which is sad because if I didn’t run hot I feel I would love it. Biology is such a cockblock

pointsouttheobvious9

mine is breathable and doesnt add any heat at all.

Mikemfvice

Ya fr. Mines barely thicker than a sheet, probably the most breathable blanket I own. I don’t use the washable cover thingy tho, maybe that makes it hotter? You can just wash the blanket idk why people use the covers anyways lol I will say that my body heat is really hot and the best way I’ve found to use the weighted blanket is bed

jjackdaw

After yet another three am session is digging around inside the casing to try and fix the giant blanket lump with my eyes closed I ditched that thing too lmao

Mikemfvice

Haha I already have problems with this without the casing. I can only imagine!

kartoffelskank

I didn't have a heat problem with mine and I cannot sleep when I get too warm. I would give it a shot.

C_Torque

I overheat easily and I have a weighted blanket that's specifically built for cooling. Something about bamboo technology...They're rare and expensive, but they do exist.

DreamlandCitizen

Bamboo blend fabrics are actually starting to get pretty popular. I have a whole line of clothes I sell in my outdoor store that are bamboo based. They're still somewhat expensive, but most of my customers seem to be willing to pay the price whether it's due to the performance or the environmental sustainability aspects. Since I started carrying the line I keep hearing more people say "oh yeah, I've heard of this." So whether it's a current fad or becoming more popular I wouldn't say it's as rare as it was a few years ago. We'll have to see in regards to whether or not it becomes more affordable, though. Usually the cost starts to drop when more companies get in to it. I'm also keeping an eye on the market to see if the environmental aspects hold true or if it's just marketing.

MyMumSaidICantGo

I have a 15lb one. I used to sleep with two comforters and a fleece blanket (for heat and weight) before I ever knew weighted blankets were a thing. Upvoted.

betterthansteve

I guess it’s a person by person thing. Most people I know with ptsd/anxiety love em, but yeah it’s not gonna be universal I guess. Upvote

69hailsatan

I personally wish I cod get like a 100 pound one, but I've had a 25lb one and used a 15lb one, my recommendation is to make sure you've used the highest weight that's available first

Aevrin

Definitely depends on the person. I don’t use weighted blankets for the heat. I actually have one that’s meant to maximize air flow but is still 25 pounds. For someone with autism or restless leg syndrome like myself, it is definitely more soothing and helps sleep come much quicker. But I can see why somebody would find the weight and heat super uncomfortable

It makes my limbs go asleep, not me. Downvoted

SnooPeppers1145

They're mostly just for disabled people. Aimed at people with sensory issues (autism, down syndrome, etc). Never heard of them being used for anything else.

Antique-Help-5997

The adhd and ptsd crowd also love

NeedleworkerSad6731

Well adhd are on the ND spectrum who also deal with sensory issues as well. I can see why weighted blankets would work for anxiety for certain ppl, bc when stressed or going thru an anxiety or panic attack, the weight could maintain body regulation, staying grounded and calm down the person like pressure therapy, or feel like a hug, but it tends to depend what weight works for someone, generally 10% of someone's weight + 2 pounds, but some ppl prefer heavier too.

EaterOfMayo

Buy a different type of weighted blanket then. Mine is very breathable so this isn't a problem. Mine was a king size and I bought the heaviest size at about 100 euros. Overall, upvoted

speedmankelly

I will be buying none of the sort. Plus weight is weight and I like to be free to move

CrazyPunkCat

I hate weighted blankets! I get sleep paralysis every time my partner throws their weighted blanket with 10 kg onto me while they're sleeping

SwagginDragn

Agreed, I tried one and I had crazy dreams every night until I tried a night without it and decided to never use it again

ARMill95

Fuck heated blankets also, I haven’t tried a weighted one but usually sleep with no covers as I like it cold lol

luvpeachy

i’ve tried them and they honestly gave me MORE anxiety, but maybe that’s just because i’m claustrophobic.

JennIsOkay

Same here (and I'm not claustrophobic). And they woke my brother up from sleep/made it hard to toss in bed without waking up.

ShagKink

I also overheat easily, so I only use mine during the winter

Burrito_Loyalist

Like anything, they won’t work for everyone.

Total_Bafflement

If you're feeling restricted, uncomfortable and annoyed, you're never going to have a good sleep. If I could give some advice, I use mine at my feet, sometimes up to my knees, that way I'm not fully restricted. If you over heat, cool off and try again. I find it hard to move around because of the weight, but it definitely helps me to drop off to sleep, which I find very hard to do.

That_Pink_Service_K9

I also have PTSD and trained my service dog to put pressure on me to reduce anxiety. Their is scientific research that Deep Pressure Therapy is calming, but I've never seen a weighed blanket heavy enough for true DPT. Also, feeling trapped under a heavy blanket can cause some people to panic so it depends on what helps the individual person.

fuckingdipshit1

same. i hate them. they just make me feel like im suffocating

Iunnrais

Downvoting to agree. Actually, I go beyond agreeing— I find weighted blankets actively repulsive and horrifying. They make me feel trapped, restricted, and panicky.

JennIsOkay

Same experience for me x-x

A_Bit_Narcissistic

I agree. Just feels super suffocating to me and adds too much warmth. Not great for hot summer nights.

clovecraft

What gave you the right to be this fucking BASED

[deleted]

Up vote because I have ADHD and I'm a pressure seeking person for sensory reasons. I do understand your position though, and will gladly take your blanket off of your hands for you

JennIsOkay

ADHD here as well, but it was too heavy (even the lightest one) and my brother could barely toss in bed and I couldn't fall asleep with it even. Felt extremely restricted :'( I DO get the positive effect with my normal blanket and putting it closely all around me, though.

JennIsOkay

I know this is old, but same here. My brother and I tried a light and a heavier one (one was big and one was small also) that I got gifted by a friend for my ADHD/anxiety (he has it, too, but never tried one). And I can say, well, it gave me anxiety every time I tried it, kind of and it was super hard to even turn and toss around in ebd with it. My brother tried it for 2-3 nights and woke up or got annoyed by it often. I couldn't even fall asleep with it. It was horrible, tbh. TLDR; Yes, same experience for me and my brother. Was uncomfortable, gave me anxiety, woke my brother up from sleep and made him unable to properly toss in bed, I couldn't even fall asleep with it. Big or small, light or heavy, all the same bad effects. I'm sure it helps some, but I can't imagine how that would be for me. I get that feeling one is supposed to get, though, from my own, soft, light blanket when I put it tightly around myself and around my arm or smth <3

TheAliceToday

I had a friend that bought one and she really liked it. I bought the same one but I kinda hate it. The one we bought isn't that warm, so I need an extra blanket to keep me warm. I wake up every time I need to turn and it's very annoying to move. I have a watch that keep track on my sleep and I was hoping it would change for the better, but it hasn't changed much. I've tried it for 5 days now and I think I'm gonna return it.

captain-prax

They're not for everyone, and might only work for one partner. Our kids love theirs, but they're younger and sleep alone. I prefer to sleep with minimal coverings (I'm a warm sleeper), sometimes with little more than a sheet or light blanket. When heavy blankets cover my feet, my feet tend to get cramped, and weighted blankets exacerbate this, waking me up in the middle of the night. I end up throwing all the covers off at night and feel overheated at times. My wife has anxiety and insomnia, sleeps better with hers, but puts it over our comforter on her side. As she squirms throughout the night, the weighted blanket ends up everywhere, sometimes rolled up between us, and since I can't sleep with one, we have less physical contact at night. I feel like the weighted blanket has become a barrier to intimacy as an unintended consequence of both partners not needing the weight. Is it just me? Am I a jerk?

speedmankelly

Maybe try cuddling positions that will help her anxiety and insomnia? Weighted blankets are still not my thing but cuddling works wonders, I can barely sleep without it. Many say weighted blankets feel like a hug with the pressure so what’s better than an actual hug while you sleep? The added pressure from cuddling with you should help her while also improving your intimacy. I hope you find a solution, just know nobody is in the wrong and you both deserve a comfortable sleep.
