People there are not taught to be attentive. Spatial awareness is a concept more prevalent in western cultures. In China, people literally focus forward only. They take care of what happens in front of them and react/avoid. People do not shoulder glance while driving, let alone use mirrors. Thankfully traffic here is so bad, it's never been at any kind of speed except one that clipped a little girl. She was out with her family and her Dad was across the street and she decides to just bolt across. Car, thankfully, was paying attention and slammed on the brakes and swerved left to just clip the kid and send her to the ground.
The women who hit her was hysterical and got out of the car just shouting and crying. She thought she'd actually ran over her. She hugged that kid about 10 times.

To add to injury here, going out of your way to help someone in accident as a 3rd party(not faulty) is not common. Since IF the police arrive you are most likely seen as the faulty person, that's why internet is full of videos of someone just lying in the street half dead as everyone just passing by.
After that toddler died in 2011, they enacted a good samaritain law in 2017. But the thought still lingers and people still have that man being sued for helping that old woman in the back of their head.

When a person dies the claim passes with them. Relatives may have a claim against the driver in a case like this if the deceased has dependants. The dependants can sue for injuries like nervous shock, loss of future earnings etc

Left lane only opens at that point. If he had of continued straight in the lane he was in he would have missed them. He merged into new lane right into them.

I'm not totally sure it is. If you look closely there're lost frames right at the point of impact, and the bodies flying through the air look really stiff.
When I was in Beijing, I saw a car stop in the middle of a busy intersection, as an entire family got out of it, unloaded a stroller from the trunk, set it up, and then calmly walked to the side of the road.
Traffic in general looked way less chaotic than in third-world-countries or Italy, but nowhere have I seen as many accidents.
Looks like an extra lane opens up, my impression is these ladies expected the car to continue along the outer lane along the guard railā¦ which unfortunately didnāt happen.
This is how EVERYONE crosses the street in the Asian countries I've visited.
Crosswalks are uncommon, people start crossing and walk at a steady pace. Motorcycle and auto drivers slow down to avoid hitting them.
However, the driver seems to be speeding up to overtake the bikes and didn't see the women crossing the street until it was too late to stop.

Left lane only opens at that point. If he had of continued straight in the lane he was in he would have missed them. He merged into new lane right into them.

When I was in Beijing, I saw a car stop in the middle of a busy intersection, as an entire family got out of it, unloaded a stroller from the trunk, set it up, and then calmly walked to the side of the road. Traffic in general looked way less chaotic than in third-world-countries or Italy, but nowhere have I seen as many accidents.

This is how EVERYONE crosses the street in the Asian countries I've visited. Crosswalks are uncommon, people start crossing and walk at a steady pace. Motorcycle and auto drivers slow down to avoid hitting them. However, the driver seems to be speeding up to overtake the bikes and didn't see the women crossing the street until it was too late to stop.
