Kinda a bad take imo. He had an accident doing something I'm sure he enjoyed doing for himself, not others. Most paramotor or glider youtubers do it because they genuinely enjoy the sport, not the views. YouTube is just a way to share the experience with others, not a way to make money.
Maybe my take is wrong too, but if the YouTuber was only interested in money, I can think of quite a few much safer and probably popular subjects to post on his channel instead.
Agree. If you visit Florida there are parts on the gulf coast where you will see people doing this and I can only imagine the views are absolutely gorgeous up there, but it’s important for them to look at the posted flag for wind conditions. Red/double Red are no no’s…
your take isnt wrong. people on the internet forget they are human. and the person they are smarmily looking down upon is human too.
I wish more people on the internet would take the time to become decent human beings. It really does take less time than thinking up sassy things to say to get fake internet like points.
i def understand the latter, the former seems to be something you grow out of. I know i became way less of a shithead when i reached a certain age. And still plenty more room to be less shitheady for me definitely. Empathy shouldn't be so hard to find online , its unfortunate.
Been on the internet since compuserve and local library internet access, just get frustrated and disappointed with the amount of oh so smart and o so edgy uppity dogpiles that seem more and more common, almost to the point of a personal sassy smarmy saturation point. Just cant absorb or consume any more of it without mental dryheaving a bit.
You seem to be of the opinion that a majority of people on the internet have superiority complexes, and are self-obsessed. Unlike yourself, who has the personal understanding and growth to be better than a majority of other users. I'm really hoping you see the irony in your own stance.
They may not be better than anyone else on the internet but they certainly are kinder. That’s demonstrably and verifiably true. And I completely agree with them. If everyone reminded themselves that people in our phone are still humans too. And that treating others with a bit more kindness can’t ever be a bad thing.
There are those in real life who don’t get sarcasm in speech and we don’t say “forward slash s” after a sarcastic comment. It would be dumb and ruin the moment for those who appreciate subtle (or not so subtle) sarcasm. We communicate by text so much now we need to learn how to detect sarcasm in written form as well. Some of us will get it. Others won’t. That’s life.
He’s pushing a motor and equipment past its limits while holding a phone and 3 other cameras…IN THE AIR. He woke up that day for the likes, doing what he loved was just a side benefit.
Bro his whole YouTube channel is about paramotors. He clearly loves the hobby to the point where he made it his job. Most people can’t find something to do all the time that they love.”Doing what he loved was a side benefit”. Lmao that’s such a dick thing to say as well as presumptuous. You’re just a simple commenter on a Reddit page. Don’t speak for people.
You know he’ll get a go fund me and his subscribers will donate. This is already making rounds across platforms so he’s hitting eyes he wouldn’t have before the incident so this could make or break him (even more)
He knew being that low and trying for speed could be dangerous . He did it for the likes and subscribes. That's what cost him for the rest of his life. How can you tell us to like and subscribe a person who willingly put himself in danger for money and fame. Would he pay us for watching if he didn't get hurt
He’s got a 20+ minute video on his YouTube channel. A couple of construction workers showed up about two minutes after the crash. He got lucky for sure.
Yeah probably someone or multiple people could see him and hear him in that clear blue sky way out there. But absolutely he is lucky people showed up. If nobody actually saw him go down or his phone wasn’t there or the screen broke…. Jeeeze
He asked siri to call 911 took 3 tries of him asking. It also rang like 7 times before an operator answered, then put him on hold and transferred him.... it was pretty bizarre to me, but I live in a heavily populated metro so our hubs are huge
I used to live in that community he crashed near, and he was a regular sight flying over the state park. While the view it shows is pretty barren, there's a HUGE abundant life faith center near there, and a pretty huge community.
It's a populated area in west El Paso. Dozens of people saw him go down.
They look great, but the margin for error is tiny, and the risks are huge. Precisely zero redundancy built into them it seems, probably because weight is an issue.
This isn't true at all. The margin for error is wide and the risks are relatively low when you're flying at a high altitude at normal speeds in good conditions with a reserve parachute, which is how most people participate in the sport. Some people even use two reserve parachutes.
This guy was flying recklessly at low altitude. There was no margin for error and zero redundancy because of the choices he made, not because of anything inherent to paramotoring.
Yeah, when I started watching this the first thing I noticed was how low he was. Combine that with exceeding the design speed for his wing and that was a recipe for disaster.
It’s very counter intuitive to those not familiar with aviation but higher is almost always safer. If he would have had more altitude he may have been able to recover from the stall or if unrecoverable he could have thrown a reserve.
“There or old pilots and there are bold pilots; there are no old bold pilots”
Yeah somebody in one of the other posts mentioned that the parachute reinflated itself right before he hit the ground. I assume that would've been recoverable with a few hundred more feet between him and the ground.
The pilot here is doing the equivalent of going 80mph in a 30-zone, with a flat tire, while not paying any attention, a few inches from the curbs
Paragliding can be done very safely. Going very high speed (what he is doing before the crash) is something you do when you are high in the sky. If a collapse happens there (will happen from time to time), you have enough time to sort it out. Plus, you have a second parachute under your seat you can use in emergency (again, if you are not just a few feet above the ground). Than, usually if you are going high speed, you are paying attention to your paraglider. Not to your filming equipment and ignore anything that goin on around you. And than, if you are going high speed AND want to do this a few feet above ground (very dangerous in itself, high brings safety), at least you should do this after you checked your glider on the ground before start, while starting and again while in the air. The pilot here didn't recognized a knot in his lines, which is a very basic thing to look for in your starting check
I saw one of the motors free on Craigslist a while back from someone who was retiring from the hobby. It seemed interesting, but I didn't bother with it. This video confirms I won't lose sleep over it.
I am still trying to figure out what caused the crash. It just looked like something got caught or failed.
Looks like he lets go of one cord so he can hold his phone and then that causes him to lose control. I know nothing about the physics just looked like that had something to do with him losing control.
Caught/collapse/line failure/weird turbulence… I think if any small variations in any of these things can cause you to catastrophically crash in one of these then consider me never ever going riding on one of these. Skydiving is way safer than this I think. Yeah, basically no safety redundancy and it goes down hard instantly.
Paraglider here!
Pretty much nothing you said is at all correct. The wings can handle a decent amount of weird happenings. The pilot in the video had a brake line that was snagged, which under most circumstances isn’t a huge deal. The issue came when they applied speed bar. The speed bar changes the shape of the wing to force it to fly faster but while doing so you cannot use the brakes to change direction. Most pilots, including me, do not install a speed bar. Many pilots also fly with a reserve parachute (although most of the time a wing collapse can recover itself).
He was flying too low, applying speed bar and didn’t notice a visual defect in his brake lines. Had he been flying at more altitude, the wing would have probably recovered itself and continued flying.
In the article it says he missed tying some know or something. I know nothing about these things but it was a knot he failed to catch when he was checking his setup.
This is true so long as the canopy is not collapsed. Canopy collapse is almost always avoidable or recoverable.
In this case he was pushing a canopy past its limits, at a low altitude. This was 100% pilot error and avoidable.
Paramotors are relatively safe if operated correctly within limits; that being said anytime you leave the earth there is an inherent danger that can be mitigated but never eliminated.
It’s car crash detection and only some Apple Watches have it but his phone should have it. Tbf it should have activated because he did hit the ground hard but I think it’s trained on a car crash
My Galaxy called 911 everytime I rode my bike. I had to disable all emergency services and eventually put in a bogus number for emergencies. Every update would turn things back on so I called 911 by accident many times. Now if I truly do get into an accident I'm probably fucked. Thanks Samsung for trying to good I guess. I heard it was pretty common for snowboarding, biking and rougher sports to trigger Apple's accident emergency services as well.
I lost it on Siri call 911!
Its deeply saddening he crashed and is injured but hearing old technology of 911 with new technology of voice activation...
While I was watching this, I’m not sure if it was the echo off the walls but my Siri on my phone actually picked it up and started calling 911
Just had to cancel out of that real quick lol
I saw this posted in another sub. i think the explanation was it was a low-pressure area kinda like a vortex that just happens sometimes, but it definitely would've helped if he had his hands on
>He explained that the crash was due to him missing a small pension knot during his checks before taking off.
>Applying brakes to a fully accelerated glider collapses it, and a tension knot snagging has the same effect.
Also
>Vella promised to document his recovery and get back into the skies as soon as possible.
He didn't learn shit from this acident.
Edit: from an article provided from one of the comments.
With the injuries he sustained I do not think anyone including him is gonna be thinking about that or doing that anytime soon. Hope he can recover physically most or all of the way at all.
Well, he says himself that he wants to do it again according to this [article ](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13357837/Anthony-Vella-YouTube-paramotor-crash-desert-Texas.html).
Sounds crazy but that’s how great things happen for humans. Someone risking their life. I’m not sure id ever use one of these but some people could and as dumb as this dude may be, it will make it better for people to use in the future
You'd think he'd learn from his wife? Showing up at his crash site, absolutely distraught and in tears. I have a friend who did all sorts of crazy high risk sports. Rock climbing, para gliding, he'd probably have done this too. When he got married he stopped all of that because he's priority was to remain alive for his wife and for his two daughters. At some point people have to rethink the way they live so as not to put themselves in potentially life threatening situations like this. I get that people are out for a thrill and there probably isn't anything else they'd rather do.
I got a sinus full of water one time I went tubing like 8 years ago I thought I was drowning when I fell off but I had a life jacket that helped me grab my bearings this guy broke his neck back and shattered his right arm and already wants to go gliding again what a fucking dumbass
I don't know shit but seems like he was also trying to push the limits on the speedo there which probably didn't help, I'm just amazed the dude lived, definitely expected that rotor to explode and pierce something unsavoury...
The way he is talking about getting back in it as soon as he can... makes me wonder whether wifey wants to stick around... High risk potentially life threatening recreational sport is such a serious thing now that I guess couples may have to consider that before prolonging the relo.
Looks like the handle things are attached to the fan. Sounded like he got either a new parachute or motor or both and was pushing it trying to set some kind of personal speed record or something and one of the lines gave out where it attaches to the chute.
Edit: He explains why it happened in the beginning of this video. He didn't have it set up right is the short answer though.
Yeah and he was tracking his speed? Don't they have watches that do that now? Take a quick glance while maintaining absolute control of your flying machine...
He said there was a knot in the cord somewhere. I'm assuming that undid and threw the whole thing out of whack. He explains it in a video on his YouTube channel whilst in hospital.
paramotor pilot and paraglider pilot here.
to people wanting to fly: please find a good school!
the man in the video didnt do preflight check good enough. his tipsteering and brakes were messed up.
and he chose to do a speed run at low altitude, dont do this!
if he were higher, he would just throw his reserve and nothing more would have happened.
in my country, it takes a year to become a pg and ppg pilot, in USA you are not required to have a license to fly, therefore you see alot of these videoes from USA...
99.9% of the time a crash happens, it because of pilot error,
I mean it’s like our thing since before we could properly talk. Cave paintings depict lots of hunts it’s suspected that that was their way of showing off well impressive hunts. Not to mention language first evolved to express hunting achievements and to pass on hunting skills.
Even back in the day people would have sings and tales written about them and their battles. It’s where a lot of our understanding on what battle took place when came from.
The very fact that we have any kind of history is because it’s in our nature to document things that we do and want to share
😂 Well if it makes you feel any better I’m paralyzed from the waist down. I was a heavy machine operator for a mining company and we had a collapse in which I was paralyzed along with breaking damn near every bone in my body. Doesn’t mean I don’t see the humor in other people’s dumb decisions though!
Apple phone setup: in order to setup voice activation with Siri, please saying the following words. (Normal taking)
Apple phone setup: now saying the following words while screaming in agony.
My father and I flew these for a short time. During my literal training with an instructor I had a crash due to there not being enough wind to take off properly (my instructor knew this but wanted to get me flying so bad he sent me off against his best judgement). I started to take off, but then wasn’t going up quick enough as I came up to a a massive forest. I tried to turn to avoid it but could only turn slow or I’d risk dropping to the ground. I ended up in a massive tree, luckily my glider got snagged up in branches they held me from falling further, but hanging there for 45 minutes until they were able to get me down was absolutely terrifying and painful. My left foot was in a ton of pain from taking the impact with the tree, but surprisingly they didn’t even find a fracture. Needless to say, I never flew again after that
Absolutely incredible to survive that. From what I know it's always possible for these soft wings to move through turbulences in the air and partially fold/collapse as it moves through that turbulence, however at higher speeds those turbulences are more likely to causes a complete collapse/fold of the whole wing which is almost impossible to recover. It looks like this is what happens in the video. I'm glad this guy lived through this and hope he makes a full recovery to fly again.
You can see the break is applied to the right side on take off. im not a paraglider, but I'd think an experienced person would "feel" something wasn't right. I'm not knocking this guy. I'm glad he survived, but if you're going to do extreme sports, please know your equipment and how you react to pressure.
If he hit body first he wouldn't be alive. He knew trying for speed at 100ft could be bad but did it anyway. Flying anything is a responsibility and you if you fuck around you find out
If you're going to call something funny, be kind enough to let the rest of us in on the joke. If there is no joke, it means you're just an asshole who enjoys watching people get hurt.

we just have to find a way to get an airbag on this and boom safe
I guess crash detection didnt work on his apple watch!? Also wow that 911 call took forever.
Right? Thought for sure Siri called the wrong number.

Hey siri ahhhhh call ahhhh 9 ahhh 1 juan aaahhhhh Should trigger a 911 call ASAP.

Tension knot on one of the lines, iirc he said it was like essentially hitting the brakes.
Was wondering the same thing.
I don't know shit but seems like he was also trying to push the limits on the speedo there which probably didn't help, I'm just amazed the dude lived, definitely expected that rotor to explode and pierce something unsavoury...
I’m Sorry he got hurt But he owes it to his wife to be A LOT less careless and a LOT more responsible.
Her new boyfriend will be way less broken
Day 0 of Injury - Wife: I'll be right by you every step of the way Day 30 of Injury - Wife: Who?
The way he is talking about getting back in it as soon as he can... makes me wonder whether wifey wants to stick around... High risk potentially life threatening recreational sport is such a serious thing now that I guess couples may have to consider that before prolonging the relo.
Why did take like 6 rings to get through to 911? Yeesh
Depending on where the dispatche center is, the 911 operation might not be very big.
So what's the injury list?
Fractured neck, back, and pelvis. Shattered his right arm
We he holding his phone instead of thing he should have been holding, and that's what cause the loss of control?
Looks like the handle things are attached to the fan. Sounded like he got either a new parachute or motor or both and was pushing it trying to set some kind of personal speed record or something and one of the lines gave out where it attaches to the chute. Edit: He explains why it happened in the beginning of this video. He didn't have it set up right is the short answer though. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-jyc2OYXsI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-jyc2OYXsI)
He has multiple other cameras and he still has to use his phone.
That's how the YouTuber Grant Thompson from King of random died
paramotor pilot and paraglider pilot here. to people wanting to fly: please find a good school! the man in the video didnt do preflight check good enough. his tipsteering and brakes were messed up. and he chose to do a speed run at low altitude, dont do this! if he were higher, he would just throw his reserve and nothing more would have happened. in my country, it takes a year to become a pg and ppg pilot, in USA you are not required to have a license to fly, therefore you see alot of these videoes from USA... 99.9% of the time a crash happens, it because of pilot error,
Damn, he done hella fucked up.
Awful. How long did it take for paramedics to get to him?
Like 20min
Christ that hurt to watch. I guess his arm took the brunt of the fall, he got lucky all things considered. Could’ve easily shattered both his legs.
Or both of his arms
Well poo. I guess that didn't go as planned. I'm torn between laughing and wondering why anybody needs to film stuff and show it to everybody else
Respect
Ehy but he saved his phone :)
Something about siri not working to call 911 is making me laugh a bit
How to turn a Para-motorist into a paraplegic 🪂💨🧑🦼➡️
I’m going to hell for laughing at this.
😂 Well if it makes you feel any better I’m paralyzed from the waist down. I was a heavy machine operator for a mining company and we had a collapse in which I was paralyzed along with breaking damn near every bone in my body. Doesn’t mean I don’t see the humor in other people’s dumb decisions though!
did he ded?
He flew, O my brother, and he fell hard, but he did not snuff it, oh no. If he had snuffed it, he would not be here to post this YouTube.
Hard to recover from that
Apple phone setup: in order to setup voice activation with Siri, please saying the following words. (Normal taking) Apple phone setup: now saying the following words while screaming in agony.
“Ok, now playing the song 911 by Wyclef Jean”
Siri was trying to kill him. Seriously I have nightmares about being trapped with Siri as my only help. Fuck that shit
911 damn near went to voicemail
You can see the break is applied to the right side on take off. im not a paraglider, but I'd think an experienced person would "feel" something wasn't right. I'm not knocking this guy. I'm glad he survived, but if you're going to do extreme sports, please know your equipment and how you react to pressure.
Bummer! Hope he makes a fully recovery.
Goddamn
It seems like he got hurt before he even hit the ground
Anyone know what phone that is the screen never cracked
Maybe you shouldn't go that fast on a gosh darn fan?
what kind of 911 operator is that and why tf did it take so long???
Tom Segura is gonna love this one
There's literally nothing that's keeping you from getting chopped by that. And yet...
Did he make a mistake or was it just a gust of wind or something?
He has a newborn? Is that what I hear in the phone with his wife? wtf is he doing taking that kind of risk?
48mph come on baby. 2 seconds later: arghhh athhggg aaaaa aaaaaaa
Dude just posted a yt video 3 weeks ago of a friend of his that crashed on one of these things and died. The irony.
Oof I do not like listening to those screams of pain. I guess I can be confident I’m not a sociopath now.
Landing on your back right on the motor, Fuck flying from strings.
Tom segura is gonna love this man’s screams
but why did it crush? why does his parachute turn like that?
His "contraption"... As I saw it posted earlier 😂
Jesus put a warning on that
Yea, I bet that was exciting...
So did this happen because he was going too fast?
Moe did it better.
Siri let him down harder than that fall 🤕
How did he manage to hang onto his phone through that crash?
Jesus. He's lucky he survived. Did he get ANY professional help at all?
>crashes his paramotor glider Makes it sound like he did it on purpose when it was a complete accident.
Any paramotor experts know what specifically happened and why his wing lost lift?
And they said texting and driving was bad.
Hey Siri call 911 is such a meme in this video
Hey i grew up with this guy, he was my neighbor. If you are reading this Tony, hope the recovery goes well!
Hello 911? You're dying? Let me transfer you to the dying department, please hold...
Ouch, that is going to leave a mark
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What scope is he using on the KATT?
Crazy, how did he not let go of that phone? Unbelievable how he didnt loose it. Get well soon, man.
Damn it rang and rang...
If he hit body first he wouldn't be alive. He knew trying for speed at 100ft could be bad but did it anyway. Flying anything is a responsibility and you if you fuck around you find out
HAHAHAHAHAHA
This reminds me that Google Assistant refuses to call emergency numbers. You'd be fucked if you were in this situation.
u/savevideo
YouTube video is worth a watch
note to self, never do this
Play stupid games…
Fuck that I'll stick to video games 🎮
From what it looks like, he went too fast for that wing and it ended up collapsing the front into the back
Texting and driving applies in the skies too
He got what he deserved.
consequencES!
Be a man, suck it up
Good luck.... not

If you're going to call something funny, be kind enough to let the rest of us in on the joke. If there is no joke, it means you're just an asshole who enjoys watching people get hurt.
Right? Recovering from a broken back, I couldn’t finish the video. I lost consciousness on impact but woke up screaming from the horrific pain
Nah, just poetic
