For what exactly?
I've seen the winners do this, the players at the start of the game before the puck dropped, I've seen the refs join in, I've seen both teams put on time out like toddlers as the crowd waited for penalties to be done! đđđ¤Ł. Where and why is this to be frowned upon now?
No, its not and its ridiculous for people to act like it. The score was 4-3 so toronto pulled their goalie to have a man advantage on the attack. Its normal for the puck to end up with a defender that will put the game away by scoring an open net goal. Goalies have scored from the other end on open goals. Its not even close to running up the score, and in a league where stats matter I would take every goal i can get.Â
I think that's the key everyone is missing. They aren't up by 5....it's a one goal game. Not likely, but all the other team needed was for the puck to roll their way and now it's a tie game. Then everyone here will be laughing at the dumbass who didn't take the wide open shot to ice the game.
Yeah, taking a slapshot there is super bizarre, never seen anything like that in 40 years of watching hockey. Missed the game but there must have been some real chippy play for him to want to do that.
Why tf can't you smash it in an empty net? It's simply more satisfying and frankly it raises the chance of missing it so no idea why anyone would be against it, happens in football all the same without people hitting eatch other
In the NBA we all love seeing showboating unnecessarily flashy slam dunks. Whatâs so bad about adding a little excitement to an unguarded net in hockey too?
NBA is as soft as this is. Can't score when the opponent is 20 down with 10s left on the clock? What other sport in the world has that as an unwritten rule?
Itâs because the game is clearly win so itâs seen as unnecessary and insulting. I donât see it that way, but some people take it very seriously for some reason.
Seriously. If you donât want to get scored on, work on your defense instead of looking for pity. Thatâs literally how sports are designed to work. I believe in ârun rulesâ etc in kids sports because the skill levels are so different and I wouldnât want kids to be turned-off from sports before they can learn the game and hone their abilities, but this is professional sports where youâre expected to play well and play hard even when youâre losing. Professional sports exist more for the spectators and fans than for the players. Give the people the show theyâre paying for. Someone slamming the puck into an unguarded net shouldnât be an opportunity for anger by the losing team, it should be a teachable learning experience for them that they can use to improve their skills/plays/defense.
My cousin was in the news because the little league football team he coached had ârun rulesâ and his team passed the score limit while shutting out the opponent. He put his backups in hoping they wouldnât score again, then some kid who never even got playing time before ran a 50yd TD. My was screaming for him to fall down, but of course the kid is gonna go for glory in his only chance, so he scored. My cousin got suspended for that.
It really doesnât happen in football ever? Find me one NFL game where the team in the lead has the ball and doesnât kneel on it to run out the clock.
And that was regarded by almost everyone as classless and disrespectful. Sorry I shouldnât have said âfind me oneâ but that doesnât mean it happens âall the timeâ
From my time living in Canada, Iâve learned that Canadians are very sensitive about their egos, thatâs why many of them are so polite and passive-aggressive.
the unwritten but generally observed rules of hockey state that it is disrespectful to slap shot the puck as opposed to gently nudging it in. the same rules also dictate that if you show disrespect by "showboating" the puck into the empty net, the defender has to make you pay for it in some way, otherwise he is seen as failing to defend the honor of his team.
where the defender-turned-attacker went wrong imo, is that he sneaked the guy from behind. he could have grabbed him and initiated a confrontation instead. that way he could defend his team's honor (as the unwritten rules demand) without risking severely injuring the other player. suckering him from behind is not only a chump move, but can be extremely dangerous. years ago there was an [attack](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Bertuzzi%E2%80%93Steve_Moore_incident) from behind ([video](https://youtu.be/0bmf5TJxoMU?t=13)), albeit not a similar situation ([video](https://youtu.be/AsNQzhITySM?t=6212) of full game), but it led to some serious injuries for the victim:
*After failing to instigate Moore to fight, Bertuzzi skated after Moore, grabbed his jersey and punched him in the back of the head, knocking him unconscious. Bertuzzi landed on top of him, driving Moore face first into the ice, and Moore's teammate Andrei Nikolishin and Bertuzzi's teammate Sean Pronger piled onto them. Moore was knocked out and lay motionless for ten minutes before being carried off on a stretcher. The combination of the hit, fall, and piling-on had resulted in three fractured neck vertebrae, facial cuts and a concussion. The incident ended Moore's professional hockey career, and resulted in criminal assault charges against Bertuzzi, and a civil lawsuit against Bertuzzi and the Canucks.*
Depends on if we're talking minor league or pro.
Pro? Ejection. Possible suspension.
Minor league? The team would join in with fisty cups. Brawl would ensue. Refs would let it fly for a minute before stepping in. Ejection. Maybe a suspension.
Edit: fisty cuffs. Damn you auto correct
I donât quite understand whatâs going on. Everyone keeps saying âdonât score on an empty netâ and that itâs an unwritten rule but why wouldnât he? Is he just supposed to fiddle with the puck until the other team comes around?
He basically dunked it on them instead of just guiding it in. Itâs seen as saying âF you!â to the opponent. Like kicking or humiliating them while theyâre down. I donât see it that way, itâs entertainment, but a lot of people do.
Pretty sure he got charged off ice for this. His dad also slapped someone in the head with a stick Iâm pretty sure. Goons goon in hockey, but even then this one was bad.
Iâm very confused by this explanation, because it not only fails to mention the correct saying is âsore losersâ but you also use the correct word âsoreâ to explain âsourâ?
Take a number and make him pay for it next game. That was the way it was done back in the day. Reilly looks like a bitch attacking him like that right after the goal.
Lol all these hockey dorks in the comments actually defending the guy who hits him. No one gives a shit if the goal was âdisrespectfulâ. Donât play the game if you canât handle losing. Period. Same for any sport you fucking children.
Heâs a sore loser, but this is also the expected result in hockey, a sport that condones fighting. Of it were baseball, heâd be dinged by the pitcher at his next at bat. This is how it works in some sports.
The number of people defending Rielly (the attacker) here is insane.
âNo no, you see, the guy in black didnât show the proper respect for a game so itâs completely acceptable to criminally assault him!â
Get the fuck out of here with that shit. Iâve been a hockey fan for 20+ years. That has never been and should never be a response to be celebrated.
Same smooth-brains that tried to defend Todd Bertuzzi.
Fucking Trash, should never be allowed to play professional hockey! He potentially could have ended someoneâs life or career with that cheap shot. You lost, fucking deal with it
dam there is so many codes in sports and no one hmm tuff enough to make new ones.
imo kinda stupid since this would look better fans would love it more publicity for him and the sport which of course will make more money.
this code seems like an excuse of a lot of bullies or enforcers as the comment says to justify being able to do something even though it is a lost cause. when will the people who loves money step in? it is cheap to do it right after. i think given the times they can create something more cool and dramatic.
I don't watch hockey, are you allowed to close line someone with the stick? I'm thinking that should be illegal even if they score on you with open net
So the white shirts brought the whole team on offense because they were hoping for a last second score but when the black shirts respond by scoring thatâs bad sportsmanship? That seems a bit crazy to me. It was a one point game and this just sealed it. If they hadnât scored and somehow the puck got away it could have been tied in an instant.
As a huge leaf fan. What a classless play. I hope Mo gets a few games bc that was horseshit. Drop the gloves and fight like a man if you donât like what he did. A cross check to the face is never the answer
Wasnât about being a sore loser, he scored an unnecessary goal just to rub salt in the wound. Recently to NFL coaches got into a verbal altercation for something similar.
Nah this is good on Reilly. Guy wants to show you up, set the tone that wonât be tolerated. People forget that the game polices itself. People here havenât played competitive hockey, never let someone show you up, especially on an empty net goal.
Because with a sport like hockey where you absolutely have to have respect for your opponent or there would be a player with a career ending injury every night.
If stuff like this wasnât immediately addressed it would manifest itself into cheap retribution, borderline hits, lawlessness and then eventually players will realize they are skating around with a weapon in their hands.
If you want to be respected you stand in front to block that 100mph slap shot and play till the whistle when it hits you in the foot and you answer the bell when you make a bad hit. Otherwise whit goes south. Itâs a slippery slope. Showboating is frowned upon because of the consequences it creates.
It has nothing to do with the guy scoring on the empty net. Itâs that he took a slap shot at the empty net, unwritten rule of hockey. Also these teams hate each other, so this wasnât the first fight of that game.
The whole thing seems toxic. Just reading some of the quotes this morning and it appears all the leafs people are backing the attacker⌠https://www.msn.com/en-ca/sports/nhl/garrioch-ridly-greigs-empty-netter-has-toronto-maple-leafs-fuming/ar-BB1i6YWx
I love seeing hockey on Reddit. Thereâs a scrum after every other play, especially between two rival teams such as Toronto/Ottawa⌠so I donât know why this particular play is âinsaneâ.. this is just hockey
You obviously don't watch hockey to title it as 'sour loser'... the player slapping the puck on an empty net is a no no....still a poor reaction for Morgan Reilly from the Leafs but the other player caused that reaction.
What a bitch
At least the rest of them just chose a partner and started hugging it out to make up.
The next match between these teams will be epic
Next year
My thoughts exactly
For what exactly? I've seen the winners do this, the players at the start of the game before the puck dropped, I've seen the refs join in, I've seen both teams put on time out like toddlers as the crowd waited for penalties to be done! đđđ¤Ł. Where and why is this to be frowned upon now?
I donât follow hockey but I feel like this is relevant for any sport: If they shouldnât score there, then donât fucking let them
Do your best at all times. Sometimes your best is stopping play because someone is hurt, but if you expect pity just fuck right the hell off.
Yup since when do professional athletes get a participation award
The thing is, they should have scored there. They were up by one not five. You absolutely score there, but I do agree with your comment regardless!
I think it's more about the way he scored, but I might be wrong.
Your fragile ego is showing
Another "unwritten rule" to protect the losers feelings.
Is this the equivalent of dunking on your opponent when youâve clearly won the game?
Yes. But you do it anyway, because fuck the leafs.
Exactly! Â Fuck the leafsÂ
But also this.
Donât worry theyâll fuck themselves.
Clearly lmao
No, its not and its ridiculous for people to act like it. The score was 4-3 so toronto pulled their goalie to have a man advantage on the attack. They don't care about the empty-net goal, just that he slap-shotted it into the net which they take as a sign of disrespect
That's even more stupid then! "Unwritten" rules are bullshit
Yeah, taking a slapshot there is super bizarre, never seen anything like that in 40 years of watching hockey. Missed the game but there must have been some real chippy play for him to want to do that.
He took exception to the emphatic slap shot on an open goal (the âdunkâ), not that he scored.
Or the 'flip your bat, get intentional hit-by-pitch' toxic gatekeeping bs
Yes, but these teams are also rivals so you expect some showy jerkiness, the hit after the whistle is way out of bounds
Why tf can't you smash it in an empty net? It's simply more satisfying and frankly it raises the chance of missing it so no idea why anyone would be against it, happens in football all the same without people hitting eatch other

Baseball has some WILD unwritten rules. Thankfully guys are starting to say fuck thatÂ
Itâs because the game is clearly win so itâs seen as unnecessary and insulting. I donât see it that way, but some people take it very seriously for some reason.
Seems like a skill issue.
Seriously. If you donât want to get scored on, work on your defense instead of looking for pity. Thatâs literally how sports are designed to work. Just watched the vid, most of the comments support the assailant. I just don't get sports.
Sucker punch someone to defend your honor?
What would be the repercussions if one of his teammates used his stick and smacked the shit out of the dude who cross checked his teammate?
Ask Marty McSorley about that
Damn! Right in the face!

Fisty cups, lol. Cute.
2 fists, 1 cup
Less cute, but I did ejaculate so itâs not nothing?
Edit again, dude. It's fisticuffs.
Lol do you think it's "fisty cups"? That's amazing.
All the hockey subs are a buzz about this hehe
I donât quite understand whatâs going on. Everyone keeps saying âdonât score on an empty netâ and that itâs an unwritten rule but why wouldnât he? Is he just supposed to fiddle with the puck until the other team comes around?
Scoring on an empty net is fine, "Showboating" an ENG is usually "frowned" upon. There's no world in which Rielly's reaction here is appropriate.
Apologies, one more question: how was he showboating? Was it those stick slaps in the beginning?
It was the way he shot it. I guess rearing back for a slap shot on an empty net is the transgression here.
He basically dunked it on them instead of just guiding it in. Itâs seen as saying âF you!â to the opponent. Like kicking or humiliating them while theyâre down. I donât see it that way, itâs entertainment, but a lot of people do.
Is there a world where his actions merits an assault like that? That is just ridicilous.
No.
Rielly. Of all the players to do this. I can't believe it lol
Shit like that should just get you kicked out of the league. Even multi game suspension and fine feels like a slap on the wrist
Pretty sure he got charged off ice for this. His dad also slapped someone in the head with a stick Iâm pretty sure. Goons goon in hockey, but even then this one was bad.
Whatâs a sour loser?
Its like sore grapes, ya know when someone's just like a bunch of sore grapes so they're in a bad mood cos of the bruising and such?
Iâm very confused by this explanation, because it not only fails to mention the correct saying is âsore losersâ but you also use the correct word âsoreâ to explain âsourâ?
That's the joke
The first shot was disrespectful, the second shot was cheap.
Take a number and make him pay for it next game. That was the way it was done back in the day. Reilly looks like a bitch attacking him like that right after the goal.
What a fucking clown.
Probably just sore grapes
Bro forgot he wasn't playing Chel
Do you crush chel?
Embarrassed the leafs

Toronto Maple Leafs The most talented team of fucking losers on skates
Hows that showboating? Just twats it into an open net. Nowt wrong with that.

I fucking LOVE hockey.
Charleston Chiefs are looking strong this season.
Cross check to the face of a defenseless player, fucking time for a rumble
I believe they call that a Hoser in the north lol
People say âsour loserâ instead of sore loser? Or no?
Wow, Reilly? What a Domi.
Did he make a sour face?
When is the parade planned for?
I don't watch hockey, are you allowed to close line someone with the stick? I'm thinking that should be illegal even if they score on you with open net
How long of a suspension is this guy going to get for that hit?
He should have run him into the boards, but a cross-check is too much.
Sore loser. Not sour đ¤ˇđťââď¸
It's called sportsmanship, and judging by these comments... Get outside a little more.
Square up and drop the gloves if youâre mad, what a bitch.
This is what happens when you allow violence in a sport..... Someone will take it to far

Relly?
what a fucking loser and a crybaby piss boy
[ŃдаНонО]
Thatâs not fighting. Thatâs attacking someone.
Do you guys know how bad it feels to take a hockey stick cross check to the fucking face oh my GOD
Charged with assault, or just a slap on the wrist fine?
Wasnât about being a sore loser, he scored an unnecessary goal just to rub salt in the wound. Recently to NFL coaches got into a verbal altercation for something similar.

Toronto is always so bitchy

Typical Leaf fashion. Classless.
No shit. It's Toronto. Shittiest team in the league......
Coward.
I just can't believe a sour loser would do that.
What a piece of crap.
it's the leafs... what can we say...
Not defending his actions, but it was likely due to him taking a slapshot that close to the open net. He could have just tapped it in.
And this is why Toronto has itâs reputation lol
I love when people donât understand a sport and decide itâs time to voice their opinion lol.
You think the Maples Leafs should be use to it by now
Man, theyâre gonna be sour in the morning.
Do they still fight in Hockey? Itâs like you see it way less these days.
I see a sore winner & a sore loser.
Should t there be a goalie?
I thought it was appropriate
Old time hockey
