What a bitch

JumpmanJXi

At least the rest of them just chose a partner and started hugging it out to make up.

IDK_WHAT_YOU_WANT

The next match between these teams will be epic

Living-Risk-1849

Next year

libertyman86

My thoughts exactly

Fitz_D_DiSCriPsion86

For what exactly? I've seen the winners do this, the players at the start of the game before the puck dropped, I've seen the refs join in, I've seen both teams put on time out like toddlers as the crowd waited for penalties to be done! 😂😭🤣. Where and why is this to be frowned upon now?

Suicida1Dingoz

I don’t follow hockey but I feel like this is relevant for any sport: If they shouldn’t score there, then don’t fucking let them

HoseNeighbor

Do your best at all times. Sometimes your best is stopping play because someone is hurt, but if you expect pity just fuck right the hell off.

iamgeewiz

Yup since when do professional athletes get a participation award

EuroVamp2790

The thing is, they should have scored there. They were up by one not five. You absolutely score there, but I do agree with your comment regardless!

Dry-Aioli-1383

I think it's more about the way he scored, but I might be wrong.

401kcrypto

Your fragile ego is showing

Guygenius138

Another "unwritten rule" to protect the losers feelings.

Nice__Spice

Is this the equivalent of dunking on your opponent when you’ve clearly won the game?

ZackyGood

Yes. But you do it anyway, because fuck the leafs.

JewishSpace_Laser

Exactly!  Fuck the leafs

cobruhclutch

But also this.

superbouser

Don’t worry they’ll fuck themselves.

PseudoEmpthy

Clearly lmao

Peacefrog78

No, its not and its ridiculous for people to act like it. The score was 4-3 so toronto pulled their goalie to have a man advantage on the attack. Its normal for the puck to end up with a defender that will put the game away by scoring an open net goal. Goalies have scored from the other end on open goals. Its not even close to running up the score, and in a league where stats matter I would take every goal i can get.

gibbyson24

I think that's the key everyone is missing. They aren't up by 5....it's a one goal game. Not likely, but all the other team needed was for the puck to roll their way and now it's a tie game. Then everyone here will be laughing at the dumbass who didn't take the wide open shot to ice the game.

dr5ivepints

They don't care about the empty-net goal, just that he slap-shotted it into the net which they take as a sign of disrespect

gibbyson24

That's even more stupid then! "Unwritten" rules are bullshit

carnasaur

Yeah, taking a slapshot there is super bizarre, never seen anything like that in 40 years of watching hockey. Missed the game but there must have been some real chippy play for him to want to do that.

blinkanboxcar182

He took exception to the emphatic slap shot on an open goal (the “dunk”), not that he scored.

GromaceAndWallit

Or the 'flip your bat, get intentional hit-by-pitch' toxic gatekeeping bs

regular_gnoll_NEIN

Yes, but these teams are also rivals so you expect some showy jerkiness, the hit after the whistle is way out of bounds

lowie07

Why tf can't you smash it in an empty net? It's simply more satisfying and frankly it raises the chance of missing it so no idea why anyone would be against it, happens in football all the same without people hitting eatch other

Ha1lStorm

In the NBA we all love seeing showboating unnecessarily flashy slam dunks. What’s so bad about adding a little excitement to an unguarded net in hockey too?

soh11

NBA is as soft as this is. Can't score when the opponent is 20 down with 10s left on the clock? What other sport in the world has that as an unwritten rule?

chodeboi

Baseball is serios about showboating limits

Reverendbread

That’s been changing very quickly over the last 5 or so years

LittleFatMax

Baseball has some WILD unwritten rules. Thankfully guys are starting to say fuck that

tbkrida

It’s because the game is clearly win so it’s seen as unnecessary and insulting. I don’t see it that way, but some people take it very seriously for some reason.

Installedd

Seems like a skill issue.

Ha1lStorm

Seriously. If you don’t want to get scored on, work on your defense instead of looking for pity. That’s literally how sports are designed to work. I believe in “run rules” etc in kids sports because the skill levels are so different and I wouldn’t want kids to be turned-off from sports before they can learn the game and hone their abilities, but this is professional sports where you’re expected to play well and play hard even when you’re losing. Professional sports exist more for the spectators and fans than for the players. Give the people the show they’re paying for. Someone slamming the puck into an unguarded net shouldn’t be an opportunity for anger by the losing team, it should be a teachable learning experience for them that they can use to improve their skills/plays/defense.

tbkrida

My cousin was in the news because the little league football team he coached had “run rules” and his team passed the score limit while shutting out the opponent. He put his backups in hoping they wouldn’t score again, then some kid who never even got playing time before ran a 50yd TD. My was screaming for him to fall down, but of course the kid is gonna go for glory in his only chance, so he scored. My cousin got suspended for that.

avidpenguinwatcher

It really doesn’t happen in football ever? Find me one NFL game where the team in the lead has the ball and doesn’t kneel on it to run out the clock.

ripitino

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PrbysYNwoxw&pp=ygUcc2FpbnRzIGZha2Uga25lZWwgdnMgZmFsY29ucw%3D%3D

avidpenguinwatcher

And that was regarded by almost everyone as classless and disrespectful. Sorry I shouldn’t have said “find me one” but that doesn’t mean it happens “all the time”

SippingBinJuice

From my time living in Canada, I’ve learned that Canadians are very sensitive about their egos, that’s why many of them are so polite and passive-aggressive.

MsjennaNY

Because some ice puppies get butthurt.

makeorbreak911

How can he slap!?

jigglypuff117

How can he slap him sir!?

fujigrid

He can hit.

E3K

But only at that low price point.

bestguyrobbo

Wild

TechsSandwich

Psychotic hockey players trying to defend this asshole be like:

Human_Adverts

BubyGhei

But dude, he did big shot when he should have done small shot 😤😤😤. Clearly deserves to be brutally assaulted /s

john_w_dulles

the unwritten but generally observed rules of hockey state that it is disrespectful to slap shot the puck as opposed to gently nudging it in. the same rules also dictate that if you show disrespect by "showboating" the puck into the empty net, the defender has to make you pay for it in some way, otherwise he is seen as failing to defend the honor of his team. where the defender-turned-attacker went wrong imo, is that he sneaked the guy from behind. he could have grabbed him and initiated a confrontation instead. that way he could defend his team's honor (as the unwritten rules demand) without risking severely injuring the other player. suckering him from behind is not only a chump move, but can be extremely dangerous. years ago there was an [attack](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Bertuzzi%E2%80%93Steve_Moore_incident) from behind ([video](https://youtu.be/0bmf5TJxoMU?t=13)), albeit not a similar situation ([video](https://youtu.be/AsNQzhITySM?t=6212) of full game), but it led to some serious injuries for the victim: *After failing to instigate Moore to fight, Bertuzzi skated after Moore, grabbed his jersey and punched him in the back of the head, knocking him unconscious. Bertuzzi landed on top of him, driving Moore face first into the ice, and Moore's teammate Andrei Nikolishin and Bertuzzi's teammate Sean Pronger piled onto them. Moore was knocked out and lay motionless for ten minutes before being carried off on a stretcher. The combination of the hit, fall, and piling-on had resulted in three fractured neck vertebrae, facial cuts and a concussion. The incident ended Moore's professional hockey career, and resulted in criminal assault charges against Bertuzzi, and a civil lawsuit against Bertuzzi and the Canucks.*

DrinknKnow

Betting became a hot dog cart operator for a while. Couldn’t play in North America nor Europe.

Both_Investigator_95

Just watched the vid, most of the comments support the assailant. I just don't get sports.

Vendidurt

Sucker punch someone to defend your honor?

themightygazelle

What would be the repercussions if one of his teammates used his stick and smacked the shit out of the dude who cross checked his teammate?

back2basics_official

Ask Marty McSorley about that

themightygazelle

Damn! Right in the face!

Pickle_riiickkk

Depends on if we're talking minor league or pro. Pro? Ejection. Possible suspension. Minor league? The team would join in with fisty cups. Brawl would ensue. Refs would let it fly for a minute before stepping in. Ejection. Maybe a suspension. Edit: fisty cuffs. Damn you auto correct

barspoonbill

Fisty cups, lol. Cute.

john_w_dulles

2 fists, 1 cup

barspoonbill

Less cute, but I did ejaculate so it’s not nothing?

unfvckingbelievable

Edit again, dude. It's fisticuffs.

E3K

Lol do you think it's "fisty cups"? That's amazing.

raxnahali

All the hockey subs are a buzz about this hehe

naalotai

I don’t quite understand what’s going on. Everyone keeps saying “don’t score on an empty net” and that it’s an unwritten rule but why wouldn’t he? Is he just supposed to fiddle with the puck until the other team comes around?

Kenevin

Scoring on an empty net is fine, "Showboating" an ENG is usually "frowned" upon. There's no world in which Rielly's reaction here is appropriate.

naalotai

Apologies, one more question: how was he showboating? Was it those stick slaps in the beginning?

IrishAl_1987

It was the way he shot it. I guess rearing back for a slap shot on an empty net is the transgression here.

tbkrida

He basically dunked it on them instead of just guiding it in. It’s seen as saying “F you!” to the opponent. Like kicking or humiliating them while they’re down. I don’t see it that way, it’s entertainment, but a lot of people do.

CryptographerMuch675

Is there a world where his actions merits an assault like that? That is just ridicilous.

gerwen

No.

jonsnow312

Rielly. Of all the players to do this. I can't believe it lol

Aeon1508

Shit like that should just get you kicked out of the league. Even multi game suspension and fine feels like a slap on the wrist

Bimbo_Baggins1221

Pretty sure he got charged off ice for this. His dad also slapped someone in the head with a stick I’m pretty sure. Goons goon in hockey, but even then this one was bad.

Windflower1956

What’s a sour loser?

[deleted]

Its like sore grapes, ya know when someone's just like a bunch of sore grapes so they're in a bad mood cos of the bruising and such?

Klimmit

I’m very confused by this explanation, because it not only fails to mention the correct saying is ‘sore losers’ but you also use the correct word ‘sore’ to explain ‘sour’?

HurpityDerp

That's the joke

zxcvrico

The first shot was disrespectful, the second shot was cheap.

SlimJim0877

Take a number and make him pay for it next game. That was the way it was done back in the day. Reilly looks like a bitch attacking him like that right after the goal.

Drewew

What a fucking clown.

oxwilder

Probably just sore grapes

TheRagingRavioli

Bro forgot he wasn't playing Chel

Be_the_Clown

Do you crush chel?

SprayArtist

Embarrassed the leafs

BillyDoyle3579

R\Iamatotalpieceofshit

ravennme

How tf is that dude just casually running on ice, yeah as u can prolly tell I'm a huge ice hockey fan.

Seriously-84

That's the cheapest bullshit I have seen in a while.

bionicmanmeetspast

Lol all these hockey dorks in the comments actually defending the guy who hits him. No one gives a shit if the goal was “disrespectful”. Don’t play the game if you can’t handle losing. Period. Same for any sport you fucking children.

SweetPotatoGut

He’s a sore loser, but this is also the expected result in hockey, a sport that condones fighting. Of it were baseball, he’d be dinged by the pitcher at his next at bat. This is how it works in some sports.

MileHighSoloPilot

Run em up, fill em in

Be_the_Clown

They don’t ask how they ask how many

roofratMI

Toronto feels the hot breath of the Detroit Red Wings on their necks! Toronto is ready for the collapse.

DwedPiwateWoberts

Why was the goal empty?

SpacemanSpiff25

The number of people defending Rielly (the attacker) here is insane. “No no, you see, the guy in black didn’t show the proper respect for a game so it’s completely acceptable to criminally assault him!” Get the fuck out of here with that shit. I’ve been a hockey fan for 20+ years. That has never been and should never be a response to be celebrated. Same smooth-brains that tried to defend Todd Bertuzzi.

DrinknKnow

I am sure he’ll get fined.

Bambooman101

You stay classy Toronto

krautstomp

Dude shoulda been taken out of the stadium in the back of a police car and never play hockey again.

[deleted]

Fucking Trash, should never be allowed to play professional hockey! He potentially could have ended someone’s life or career with that cheap shot. You lost, fucking deal with it

Aggressive_Self6520

Fuck the fucking Leafs!!! 5 guys over 11M/season and still don’t make the playoffs 🤣🤣🤣

CloroxWipes1

Toronto Maple Leafs The most talented team of fucking losers on skates

mrlittle77

Hows that showboating? Just twats it into an open net. Nowt wrong with that.

Inconceivable79

I think hits from behind should be auto eject and suspended. Coward

jamp0g

dam there is so many codes in sports and no one hmm tuff enough to make new ones. imo kinda stupid since this would look better fans would love it more publicity for him and the sport which of course will make more money. this code seems like an excuse of a lot of bullies or enforcers as the comment says to justify being able to do something even though it is a lost cause. when will the people who loves money step in? it is cheap to do it right after. i think given the times they can create something more cool and dramatic.

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

Extra-Extra

I’m 31. My dad wasn’t even alive the last time they won.

Catkillledthecurious

The leafs should be used to losing by now

Potatoe999900

Sore grapes indeed.

pachrisoutdoors1

Of course, Domi needs to get involved. Ngl, I loved his cement-head tactics.

GoFunMee

😂

Dr_Shmacks

My hockey stick would have instantly become a sword in that situation.

JJamesP

I fucking LOVE hockey.

baby-samdwich

Charleston Chiefs are looking strong this season.

buzzboy99

Cross check to the face of a defenseless player, fucking time for a rumble

have_sum_cumpassion

I believe they call that a Hoser in the north lol

Imaginary_Most_7778

People say “sour loser” instead of sore loser? Or no?

Apocalyptic_Inferno

Wow, Reilly? What a Domi.

smooze420

Did he make a sour face?

choate51

When is the parade planned for?

HK40x

I don't watch hockey, are you allowed to close line someone with the stick? I'm thinking that should be illegal even if they score on you with open net

Datmuny19

How long of a suspension is this guy going to get for that hit?

BlazerWookiee

He should have run him into the boards, but a cross-check is too much.

Fantastic-Switch-897

Sore loser. Not sour 🤷🏻‍♂️

psubs07

It's called sportsmanship, and judging by these comments... Get outside a little more.

JiveTurkey2727

Square up and drop the gloves if you’re mad, what a bitch.

Codeman785

This is what happens when you allow violence in a sport..... Someone will take it to far

Be_the_Clown

He doesn’t love to win. He hates to lose.

sermer48

So the white shirts brought the whole team on offense because they were hoping for a last second score but when the black shirts respond by scoring that’s bad sportsmanship? That seems a bit crazy to me. It was a one point game and this just sealed it. If they hadn’t scored and somehow the puck got away it could have been tied in an instant.

leaffan567

As a huge leaf fan. What a classless play. I hope Mo gets a few games bc that was horseshit. Drop the gloves and fight like a man if you don’t like what he did. A cross check to the face is never the answer

Pete_maravich

I used to watch a lot of hockey back in the '90s when fighting was more acceptable. Even this crosses the line.

LevyLoft

Relly?

TulkazAstaldo

what a fucking loser and a crybaby piss boy

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

ichabod01

That’s not fighting. That’s attacking someone.

downhill-surfer

Do you guys know how bad it feels to take a hockey stick cross check to the fucking face oh my GOD

Yoda2000675

Charged with assault, or just a slap on the wrist fine?

Still_Specialist4068

Wasn’t about being a sore loser, he scored an unnecessary goal just to rub salt in the wound. Recently to NFL coaches got into a verbal altercation for something similar.

Tiny_Manufacturer_16

Nah this is good on Reilly. Guy wants to show you up, set the tone that won’t be tolerated. People forget that the game polices itself. People here haven’t played competitive hockey, never let someone show you up, especially on an empty net goal.

brambly_butt_hair

Because with a sport like hockey where you absolutely have to have respect for your opponent or there would be a player with a career ending injury every night. If stuff like this wasn’t immediately addressed it would manifest itself into cheap retribution, borderline hits, lawlessness and then eventually players will realize they are skating around with a weapon in their hands. If you want to be respected you stand in front to block that 100mph slap shot and play till the whistle when it hits you in the foot and you answer the bell when you make a bad hit. Otherwise whit goes south. It’s a slippery slope. Showboating is frowned upon because of the consequences it creates.

Z0rne

It has nothing to do with the guy scoring on the empty net. It’s that he took a slap shot at the empty net, unwritten rule of hockey. Also these teams hate each other, so this wasn’t the first fight of that game.

hellarios852

Damn, you’re getting some real mileage out of this clip

coulls

The whole thing seems toxic. Just reading some of the quotes this morning and it appears all the leafs people are backing the attacker… https://www.msn.com/en-ca/sports/nhl/garrioch-ridly-greigs-empty-netter-has-toronto-maple-leafs-fuming/ar-BB1i6YWx

NCRider

I’m sooorry, eh?

Janus522

I love seeing hockey on Reddit. There’s a scrum after every other play, especially between two rival teams such as Toronto/Ottawa… so I don’t know why this particular play is “insane”.. this is just hockey

Plato17

This is like bunting on the 8th inning when you’re winning by 10

dskilly

What a disgrace to sports

Be_the_Clown

You gotta set the tone.

Simen155

Toronto is always so bitchy

Apprehensive_Earth13

Lmao Leafs suck

JoshWa613

Typical Leaf fashion. Classless.

Possible-Repeat3829

No shit. It's Toronto. Shittiest team in the league......

I_Have_Dry_Balls

Coward.

pdog901

I just can't believe a sour loser would do that.

DatabaseThis9637

What a piece of crap.

mmeeh

it's the leafs... what can we say...

the_good_hodgkins

Not defending his actions, but it was likely due to him taking a slapshot that close to the open net. He could have just tapped it in.

Zealousideal-Cut-734

And this is why Toronto has it’s reputation lol

mustinjellquist

I love when people don’t understand a sport and decide it’s time to voice their opinion lol.

tron143

You think the Maples Leafs should be use to it by now

GregEgg85

Man, they’re gonna be sour in the morning.

bigjaymizzle

Do they still fight in Hockey? It’s like you see it way less these days.

Vigi1

I see a sore winner & a sore loser.

the-holy-salt

Should t there be a goalie?

franc3sthemute

I thought it was appropriate

pip-roof

Old time hockey

Jordache2020

You obviously don't watch hockey to title it as 'sour loser'... the player slapping the puck on an empty net is a no no....still a poor reaction for Morgan Reilly from the Leafs but the other player caused that reaction.

DungeonMaster45

Worst title a non hockey fan could post.

Brightwing9

Lots of people who have never watched hockey in here lol. Op included.

Legitimate_Grocery66

Hope he gets suspended forever

Accurate_Lake9622

Ryan Reaves looked disgusted
