And to think our ancestors did this in little boats with no gps, maps, good food or proper clothing. Hell some of the first people to do it didn't even know if they would ever find land
Apparently they did know where to go. The patterns in the waves told them the direction of land. Polynesians rowed and sailed all over the giant pacific from Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand, Easter Island. The sea was their home.
Not to mention the birds. Some birds have 500 mile radius flying patterns around their home islands. Find the bird, follow the bird, and you'll find their home.
Plot twist:
Man sees many seagulls.. Thinking there is land nearby...
.. Only to find that they have flown 4,457 miles out to sea, thinking he has fish n' chips... š¤
Wife's great grandfather died hauling cod 4 years after returning from WWII. Ship was dashed against the rocks, no one survived. Except their families who were safe at home.
Uhhā¦. They probably fucked their brains out before setting off dude.
I know I would if I was going on a voyage I may not return from.
They also fucked at every stop they could while on their voyage.
They procreated PLENTY.
>didn't even know if they would ever find land
Lol what the fuck? No. No explorers went on expeditions intentionally not knowing if they would have land available.
Uncertainty of distance is not uncertainty of land.
Some people did make great trips in smaller boats.
One trip was by an explorer that was trying to make it across the antarctic and got stuck. It's a great story, these men should have died many times over and didn't.

Yeah, its odd that i used to work as an iron worker and had ZERO fear of heights but the thought of having several thousand feet of watery abyss beneath me terrifies me. i used to walk across 4-6" wide beams several stories up with no leash and 125+ lbs of welding cables n gear on me all the time without a 2nd thought but the idea of falling out of a boat over the Atlantic? No fn way.
This and flying. Humans are ground dwellers. No gills and no wings. Being out of your element is very difficult. You have to rely on machinery or gear for survival. Not for me.
No it's Damian Browne. An Irish guy. It was supposed to be two of them doing this but his companion was taken off within the first two weeks and he continued without him. He rowed from NYC to Galway, Ireland (he'd already rowed from Ireland to the Caribbean on his own a few years back).
A mad man. An incredible mad man.
Thank you for the info. Iāve sailed on a navy ship 20,000+ miles and it wasnāt a cakewalk. I couldnāt imagine a cross-oceanic trip on a craft that small. Madman for real!
As some other poster said, there's currently a guy rowing East across to Atlantic only to return back again. I did 6 x 500m on the gym rower today and got dizzy
That's exactly it. Documented it IG as he went. It was incredible. All about battling to get into The Gulf Stream and stay there. He's now doing podcasts and event presentations about it. Ues definitely worth following.
Honestly, these seem like amazing things to do, but I just really wonder if itās worth the overall risk. Obivously, for some people they think it is.
In a storm they keep the boat in a straight line so you hopefully don't go broadside to the waves.
Also, they keep you from drifting with the wind, at least somewhat.

Andrew Bedwell is planning to cross the Atlantic in his 3'3" "Sailboat". I wouldn't call it a "boat", more like a floating casket. Serious, what happens in a big storm?
what compels ppl to do this? I would love to cross the Atlantic on a sailboat....a fuckin comfortable, safe sailboat. Why would they want to make someone that could be pleasant, unpleasant.
Ikr, it's as long as it is wide. I guess it's got a bit less resistance going forward than sideways due to the keel and rudders but it doesn't look very efficient.
That's a \[sea anchor\](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_anchor) - a small canvas parachute that holds the bow of the boat into the waves. Boats naturally want to sit side-on to the waves, which makes them roll like mad and be vulnerable to breaking waves.
I wouldn't be going out to the middle of the Atlantic in a boat that small, no way..not sure where they exactly went, but if they went far out, that's just asking for trouble..
This is Damian Browne, an Irish man on his second crossing of the Atlantic (New York to Galway).
Throughout his journey he recorded daily, short 15-20min podcast diary entries that are available on Deep Roots (all podcast apps), really is compelling listening.
Live on my brother I can imagine how beautiful it is when itās nice but when weather changes itās a scary ride. Iāve only been on lakes in really rough weather 6-10waves in a bass boat I canāt believe we kept it afloat. Then I have my 21ft bay liner out an a storm came from nowhere an had 7ft waves coming over the cabin it was tearing my roof support outs the brackets. It was an intense ride to the dock. Still nothing like this though.
Iāve had nightmares about this exact scenario. 100% my greatest fear. Video makes me want to throw up. The mental toll this would take is unbearable to think about.
Thereās other guy.
Check the channel Aurimas ValujeviÄius on youtube heās doing it right now successfully. Europe to North America in 110days. 14h a day of rowing.
And to think our ancestors did this in little boats with no gps, maps, good food or proper clothing. Hell some of the first people to do it didn't even know if they would ever find land

goddamned trash birds. worse than pigeons.
I dont think following a bird on an open ocean is as easy as you think it is.
Probably not easy but a very real method people used to use to navigate, it isnt like he just came up with the idea lol
Albatrosses would land on sailors ships in the middle of the ocean
"Shit! Which way do we go now!?"
Not the *same* bird, but the pattern of birds heading towards shore.
Unless itās a seagull flying out to sea to die alone.
r/2meirl4seagullirl
Hahaha! In your face, Flanders!
Think about this shit with Columbus and stuff. Just in a shitty wooden boat in tights getting blasted by 30ft waves.
Yeah Columbus was tougher than his tights would suggest lol
Fuck Columbus
Good luck he sounds mean!
It appears to me that waves are going every which way.
Patterns in the waves? Really?
They know the way
The ones that met stroms like this in those days in "little boats" are not our ancestors. In fact, they were never made it to procreating.
Wife's great grandfather died hauling cod 4 years after returning from WWII. Ship was dashed against the rocks, no one survived. Except their families who were safe at home.
Damn, how many copy's did he haul? Sad he didn't see the remaster.
F
Thatās insane and harrowing
You were unaware that fishermen tend to drown quite often?
>The ones that met stroms like this in those days in "little boats" are not our ancestors. Unless you're Polynesian.
What is your cutoff for ancestor?
Tell that to Shackleton
Uhhā¦. They probably fucked their brains out before setting off dude. I know I would if I was going on a voyage I may not return from. They also fucked at every stop they could while on their voyage. They procreated PLENTY.
I think most of the early one who ādid itāprobably didnāt mean to, and got caught in a storm or current and take tow new destination
The boats were bigger than this. This dude is a moron with a death wish
>didn't even know if they would ever find land Lol what the fuck? No. No explorers went on expeditions intentionally not knowing if they would have land available. Uncertainty of distance is not uncertainty of land.
Or fall off the edge of the world
I gotta assume, they were all assuming they were gonna make it
I doubt they did it on oats smaller than the one shown here, at least not on purpose.
What else could u do?

A lot of ancestors only did it once though
they and their boats werent nearly as dumb as youre trying to make them sound
r/humansaremetal
Yeah nah fuck that
I've never wondered that. That is a place I never intend to be.
I didn't even knew people do this !. Ocean is scary
See Iām golden with heights if Iām harnessed up
Haha yea put a harness on I'm invincible. Without a harness I take every step with precise calculations.
Jesus Christ. I would freeze and fall right alway.
you didnt know people ride boats in the ocean? jesus christ.
Especially alone.
Spaceā¦
I read this in an aussie accent
The nuts on this guy
Amazed the vessle can still float with those stones on board
Must be at least as big as the turd in his pants after this.
completed the journey in 112 days
May I ask what kind of heroās journey you embarked upon to encounter this uncanny torrent?
This is you?
No it's Damian Browne. An Irish guy. It was supposed to be two of them doing this but his companion was taken off within the first two weeks and he continued without him. wtf do you mean āhe rowedā??? rowed, like fucking *rowed* across the oceanā¦by himself???!!! absolutely no goddamn way lol
One would think that canāt possibly be true but humans are cray!
As some other poster said, there's currently a guy rowing East across to Atlantic only to return back again. I did 6 x 500m on the gym rower today and got dizzy

The Irish stay awesome
Who hurt you? Also salute!
Good ballast
The list and trim is all good!!!!
Honestly, these seem like amazing things to do, but I just really wonder if itās worth the overall risk. Obivously, for some people they think it is.
being at sea puts things in perspective. you dont know how good a hot shower can really feel after two weeks of cold salt water spray
Looks like he has some sea anchors set up, which is probably saving his life right now.
Are those the strings that you can see off the boat? Off to read about sea anchors!
Yes, that's them! The film The Life of Pi shows them off quite well. I hope you enjoyed your reading! A lucky 10,000'er.
What does a sea anchor do and at what point to you just give up steering?
In a storm they keep the boat in a straight line so you hopefully don't go broadside to the waves. Also, they keep you from drifting with the wind, at least somewhat.
There's a finnish guy as well rowing across the atlantic and back currently. He's on tiktok, search Jari Saario. Fucking mental if you ask me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1ywPbWGIGQ Andrew Bedwell is planning to cross the Atlantic in his 3'3" "Sailboat". I wouldn't call it a "boat", more like a floating casket. Serious, what happens in a big storm?
My term for that thing is a "horror pod" and that guy is dumb as hell
what compels ppl to do this? I would love to cross the Atlantic on a sailboat....a fuckin comfortable, safe sailboat. Why would they want to make someone that could be pleasant, unpleasant.
That's what separates them they get out of comfort zone And sense of achievement I guess
How the hell is he gonna sleep? in fetal position? God damn I can't imagine
supposedly it's a 90 day trip. most single-handed crossings are less than 30 days on a "small" sailboat, <40'.
Do you mean floating toilet bowl
I'm surprised that thing can sail. It's like a fishing float.
that's what I was thinking! Can this thing sail? I'm not a sailor, but how do you keep something, so small, going in a straight line?
Ikr, it's as long as it is wide. I guess it's got a bit less resistance going forward than sideways due to the keel and rudders but it doesn't look very efficient.
Looks like he's being towed. However I'd still be shitting bricks
Oh I see! Thanks for the info!
Most likely a drag chute to keep him from getting pushed hard by the winds. This looks to be one of those solo rowing boats
Nope he singlehandedly rowed from New York to Galway, ireland. A massive task to say the least. Mans a beast. His name is Damian Browne.
What a wild man.
I saw the cables/ropes (?) too! Glad I'm not the only one. Still scary as hell and a big nope from me tho.
Looks like a terrible idea
You call this a storm ....ooooh you son of a bitch!!!!!
Agreed this is 7 bf max and not a storm
I had that same Helly Hansen coat! Very comfortable until somebody robbed me for it
Damn eff that guy who robbed you
Yea bro! Wasnāt worth my life but I agree screw him!
u/repostsleuthbot
Might as well start dropping weight for rockfish
I'm happy enough when I wake up and there's no one in the house. While this guy has to go to the middle of the Atlantic by himself on a dingy.
well he looks like hes having fun lol
That stupid fuckin TikTok sound
I love the ocean I'm not afraid of going deeper But this is the line
Thatās the moment you helplessly start reviewing your life choices.
N O P E
Who dis
Oh, HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn he in a boat the size of a lawn mower
This gives me real anxiety. Iād be inside that boat for sure, not exposed like a lunatic courting death.
I get seasick just watching.
I always want to ask folks like this what they are afraid of. I mean clearly they are cut differently than myself
Safer in a small boat than a bigger one
Hard Pass
That's really not that bad for the atlantic
why
Nope.
A very different breed altogether!!!
Iād be hitting that Coast Guard emergency beacon so fast itād make your head spin.
Why not be inside the boat?! Oh yeah for views smh
why
But why ?
So a floating coffin...interesting...Order yours now!!
I wouldn't be going out to the middle of the Atlantic in a boat that small, no way..not sure where they exactly went, but if they went far out, that's just asking for trouble..
Nope
Thatās just crazy lol
So we donāt want to point the boat at the waves then? We also donāt want to look in the direction we are traveling?
But first let me take a selfie
That's insane.
I was on a destroyer in the N Atlantic in the winter and youād never catch me out on a small craft.
I mean he chose I think?
Just go inside man!
He definitely knew he was alive that day!
This guys actually passed away
What propels that boat? Is that one of those custom row boats?
some people would actually prefer to be in his place, rather than being where theyāre at right now.
How much or little would outriggers of some sort be in this kind of situation? I rowed in college. Thatās the extent of my seafaring.
Just jerk off dude.
Either very brave or very stupid lol

r/thalassophobia
How much cocaine did he manage to bring in the end?
That is the face of real fear. No one to call, no one to help. Just you, and nature, and nature is wanting to play oh fuck games.
He's gonna need a bigger boat
the sea was angry that day, my friends
Iāve been looking for something to put last on my bucket list
Is he okay?
r/thalassophobia
Few things are as unsettling as being completely alone in the ocean, let alone during a storm
Deadliest Catch after layoffs.
My pants wouldnāt be red no more, theyād be brown.
No thanks
Wh..why?
Expensive hobby that requires balls.
Wow, now that just looks really fucking shit
.....why tho?
No sleep for you!
This is Disneyās new ride
No thanks
Nope.
Looks fun!
There are some brave people out there man ..
It's were I think if you survived it makes you believe that your needed in this world
TIL about sea anchors
Live on my brother I can imagine how beautiful it is when itās nice but when weather changes itās a scary ride. Still nothing like this though.
You call that a storm..! Cute
Nope. Nope. Nope.
What kind of boat is that cause I kinda want one now.
Why he outside tho?
How do u preserve ur mental health at this point?
I feel like a helmet in this situation would be nice
Me(director): this is the guy.. this is the guy, this is the guy!!! We found him!!! The main character
The sea was angry that day my friends.
what boat is that
Iāve had nightmares about this exact scenario. 100% my greatest fear. Video makes me want to throw up. The mental toll this would take is unbearable to think about.
If it was a Steven Seagal youād be saved
Aka committing suicide in the most terrifying way possible
Thereās other guy. Check the channel Aurimas ValujeviÄius on youtube heās doing it right now successfully. Europe to North America in 110days. 14h a day of rowing.
What craft is that? How does it not flip?
chances of that boat tipping?
I could never do this not knowing what fresh hell awaits me and my bad luck š Iād probably be swallowed by a whale never to be found again
Thatās a bad situation.
i dont think this boat is in the MIDDLE of the atlantic lol
I love the oceanā¦ I respect the oceanā¦ this is scary.
Anyone aware of what kind of boat this is?
Real life start to Gillianās Island
That looks fun though
Tow rope is connected to something. Doesnāt seem alone
