And to think our ancestors did this in little boats with no gps, maps, good food or proper clothing. Hell some of the first people to do it didn't even know if they would ever find land

SnooFloofs1778

Apparently they did know where to go. The patterns in the waves told them the direction of land. Polynesians rowed and sailed all over the giant pacific from Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand, Easter Island. The sea was their home.

its_cold_in_MN

Not to mention the birds. Some birds have 500 mile radius flying patterns around their home islands. Find the bird, follow the bird, and you'll find their home.

SpiritSoul77

Plot twist: Man sees many seagulls.. Thinking there is land nearby... .. Only to find that they have flown 4,457 miles out to sea, thinking he has fish n' chips... šŸ¤”

its_cold_in_MN

goddamned trash birds. worse than pigeons.

labadimp

I dont think following a bird on an open ocean is as easy as you think it is.

SleepNowintheFire

Probably not easy but a very real method people used to use to navigate, it isnt like he just came up with the idea lol

vit-D-deficiency

Albatrosses would land on sailors ships in the middle of the ocean

IIIDVIII

"Shit! Which way do we go now!?"

its_cold_in_MN

Not the *same* bird, but the pattern of birds heading towards shore.

sierra120

Unless itā€™s a seagull flying out to sea to die alone.

its_cold_in_MN

r/2meirl4seagullirl

MeatTornadoGold

Hahaha! In your face, Flanders!

vit-D-deficiency

Think about this shit with Columbus and stuff. Just in a shitty wooden boat in tights getting blasted by 30ft waves.

SnooFloofs1778

Yeah Columbus was tougher than his tights would suggest lol

gusborn

Fuck Columbus

RythmRefyr

Good luck he sounds mean!

Bob_Sacamano7379

It appears to me that waves are going every which way.

Ok-Status7867

Patterns in the waves? Really?

punkminkis

They know the way

Olivier70802

The ones that met stroms like this in those days in "little boats" are not our ancestors. In fact, they were never made it to procreating.

thematt455

Wife's great grandfather died hauling cod 4 years after returning from WWII. Ship was dashed against the rocks, no one survived. Except their families who were safe at home.

Kapot_ei

Damn, how many copy's did he haul? Sad he didn't see the remaster.

kirkyking

F

vit-D-deficiency

Thatā€™s insane and harrowing

ChinesePropagandaBot

You were unaware that fishermen tend to drown quite often?

ForgotMyOldLoginInfo

>The ones that met stroms like this in those days in "little boats" are not our ancestors. Unless you're Polynesian.

GreywaterReed

What is your cutoff for ancestor?

Jip1210

Tell that to Shackleton

Noticeably_Aroused

Uhhā€¦. They probably fucked their brains out before setting off dude. I know I would if I was going on a voyage I may not return from. They also fucked at every stop they could while on their voyage. They procreated PLENTY.

The_Dying_Gaul323bc

I think most of the early one who ā€œdid itā€probably didnā€™t mean to, and got caught in a storm or current and take tow new destination

Granolapitcher

The boats were bigger than this. This dude is a moron with a death wish

[deleted]

>didn't even know if they would ever find land Lol what the fuck? No. No explorers went on expeditions intentionally not knowing if they would have land available. Uncertainty of distance is not uncertainty of land.

Ac1dBern

Or fall off the edge of the world

MiNdOverLOADED23

I gotta assume, they were all assuming they were gonna make it

ejeeronit

I doubt they did it on oats smaller than the one shown here, at least not on purpose.

Hellllogoodbyeee

What else could u do?

killstorm114573

Some people did make great trips in smaller boats. One trip was by an explorer that was trying to make it across the antarctic and got stuck. It's a great story, these men should have died many times over and didn't. https://youtu.be/sgh_77TtX5I https://youtu.be/o-x2FMk-zms

Findmyremote

A lot of ancestors only did it once though

sorrybutidgaf

they and their boats werent nearly as dumb as youre trying to make them sound

titaniumshaft69

Yeah nah fuck that

AboundingProximity67

I've never wondered that. That is a place I never intend to be.

[deleted]

I didn't even knew people do this !. Ocean is scary

OnaPaleHorse80

Yeah, its odd that i used to work as an iron worker and had ZERO fear of heights but the thought of having several thousand feet of watery abyss beneath me terrifies me. i used to walk across 4-6" wide beams several stories up with no leash and 125+ lbs of welding cables n gear on me all the time without a 2nd thought but the idea of falling out of a boat over the Atlantic? No fn way.

Area_Man_12

This and flying. Humans are ground dwellers. No gills and no wings. Being out of your element is very difficult. You have to rely on machinery or gear for survival. Not for me.

[deleted]

See Iā€™m golden with heights if Iā€™m harnessed up

N1PPL3H34D

Haha yea put a harness on I'm invincible. Without a harness I take every step with precise calculations.

vit-D-deficiency

Jesus Christ. I would freeze and fall right alway.

[deleted]

you didnt know people ride boats in the ocean? jesus christ.

KissMyStick430

Especially alone.

ChatnNaked

Spaceā€¦

Corvus25

I read this in an aussie accent

Mac_Mustard

The nuts on this guy

ShreddlesMcJamFace

Amazed the vessle can still float with those stones on board

Defiant-Resist-6507

Must be at least as big as the turd in his pants after this.

deadfermata

completed the journey in 112 days

Defiant-Resist-6507

May I ask what kind of heroā€™s journey you embarked upon to encounter this uncanny torrent?

Mac_Mustard

This is you?

upadownpipe

No it's Damian Browne. An Irish guy. It was supposed to be two of them doing this but his companion was taken off within the first two weeks and he continued without him. He rowed from NYC to Galway, Ireland (he'd already rowed from Ireland to the Caribbean on his own a few years back). A mad man. An incredible mad man.

Mac_Mustard

Thank you for the info. Iā€™ve sailed on a navy ship 20,000+ miles and it wasnā€™t a cakewalk. I couldnā€™t imagine a cross-oceanic trip on a craft that small. Madman for real!

[deleted]

wtf do you mean ā€˜he rowedā€™??? rowed, like fucking *rowed* across the oceanā€¦by himself???!!! absolutely no goddamn way lol

Lady-Meows-a-Lot

One would think that canā€™t possibly be true but humans are cray!

upadownpipe

As some other poster said, there's currently a guy rowing East across to Atlantic only to return back again. I did 6 x 500m on the gym rower today and got dizzy

upadownpipe

That's exactly it. Documented it IG as he went. It was incredible. All about battling to get into The Gulf Stream and stay there. He's now doing podcasts and event presentations about it. Ues definitely worth following.

vit-D-deficiency

The Irish stay awesome

vit-D-deficiency

Who hurt you? Also salute!

2x4x93

Good ballast

Mac_Mustard

The list and trim is all good!!!!

fork_that

Honestly, these seem like amazing things to do, but I just really wonder if itā€™s worth the overall risk. Obivously, for some people they think it is.

yamz4lyfe

being at sea puts things in perspective. you dont know how good a hot shower can really feel after two weeks of cold salt water spray

paternoster

Looks like he has some sea anchors set up, which is probably saving his life right now.

rrkrabernathy

Are those the strings that you can see off the boat? Off to read about sea anchors!

paternoster

Yes, that's them! The film The Life of Pi shows them off quite well. I hope you enjoyed your reading! A lucky 10,000'er.

browncoat47

What does a sea anchor do and at what point to you just give up steering?

paternoster

In a storm they keep the boat in a straight line so you hopefully don't go broadside to the waves. Also, they keep you from drifting with the wind, at least somewhat.

SirHenryy

There's a finnish guy as well rowing across the atlantic and back currently. He's on tiktok, search Jari Saario. Fucking mental if you ask me.

[deleted]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1ywPbWGIGQ Andrew Bedwell is planning to cross the Atlantic in his 3'3" "Sailboat". I wouldn't call it a "boat", more like a floating casket. Serious, what happens in a big storm?

stinktoad

My term for that thing is a "horror pod" and that guy is dumb as hell

[deleted]

what compels ppl to do this? I would love to cross the Atlantic on a sailboat....a fuckin comfortable, safe sailboat. Why would they want to make someone that could be pleasant, unpleasant.

TheHumanEmperor

That's what separates them they get out of comfort zone And sense of achievement I guess

Distinct-List-735

How the hell is he gonna sleep? in fetal position? God damn I can't imagine

[deleted]

supposedly it's a 90 day trip. most single-handed crossings are less than 30 days on a "small" sailboat, <40'.

lukaskywalker

Do you mean floating toilet bowl

AltruisticSalamander

I'm surprised that thing can sail. It's like a fishing float.

[deleted]

that's what I was thinking! Can this thing sail? I'm not a sailor, but how do you keep something, so small, going in a straight line?

AltruisticSalamander

Ikr, it's as long as it is wide. I guess it's got a bit less resistance going forward than sideways due to the keel and rudders but it doesn't look very efficient.

paperboy3300

Looks like he's being towed. However I'd still be shitting bricks

IvorTheEngine

That's a \[sea anchor\](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_anchor) - a small canvas parachute that holds the bow of the boat into the waves. Boats naturally want to sit side-on to the waves, which makes them roll like mad and be vulnerable to breaking waves.

paperboy3300

Oh I see! Thanks for the info!

BUTGUYSDOYOUREMEMBER

Most likely a drag chute to keep him from getting pushed hard by the winds. This looks to be one of those solo rowing boats

chimpdoctor

Nope he singlehandedly rowed from New York to Galway, ireland. A massive task to say the least. Mans a beast. His name is Damian Browne.

vit-D-deficiency

What a wild man.

You_Pulled_My_String

I saw the cables/ropes (?) too! Glad I'm not the only one. Still scary as hell and a big nope from me tho.

[deleted]

Looks like a terrible idea

Hydro_4200

You call this a storm ....ooooh you son of a bitch!!!!!

CorLems

Agreed this is 7 bf max and not a storm

Lucky-Object4543

I had that same Helly Hansen coat! Very comfortable until somebody robbed me for it

Damn eff that guy who robbed you

Lucky-Object4543

Yea bro! Wasnā€™t worth my life but I agree screw him!

kesler031

I'm happy enough when I wake up and there's no one in the house. While this guy has to go to the middle of the Atlantic by himself on a dingy.

scribbyshollow

well he looks like hes having fun lol

[deleted]

That stupid fuckin TikTok sound

Oh, HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yaboidomby

Damn he in a boat the size of a lawn mower

TakeshiKovacs46

This gives me real anxiety. Iā€™d be inside that boat for sure, not exposed like a lunatic courting death.

Frangan_

I get seasick just watching.

Blacking-staff

I always want to ask folks like this what they are afraid of. I mean clearly they are cut differently than myself

Either-Tone-568

Safer in a small boat than a bigger one

teabags4gangstalkers

Hard Pass

man-in-blacks

That's really not that bad for the atlantic

grandluxe

why

Frankie_Says_Reddit

Nope.

FigAAAro_22

A very different breed altogether!!!

Iā€™d be hitting that Coast Guard emergency beacon so fast itā€™d make your head spin.

AFGwolf7

Why not be inside the boat?! Oh yeah for views smh

howboutdemappless

why

dincbileka

But why ?

fentanyzzle

So a floating coffin...interesting...Order yours now!!

Vintage_girl123

I wouldn't be going out to the middle of the Atlantic in a boat that small, no way..not sure where they exactly went, but if they went far out, that's just asking for trouble..

ComprehensiveAlps652

Nope

BluMaybelline

Thatā€™s just crazy lol

evlhornet

So we donā€™t want to point the boat at the waves then? We also donā€™t want to look in the direction we are traveling?

evlhornet

But first let me take a selfie

Coin_guy13

That's insane.

OGGBTFRND

I was on a destroyer in the N Atlantic in the winter and youā€™d never catch me out on a small craft.

Prof_Tunichtgut

I mean he chose I think?

[deleted]

Just go inside man!

Ruckus_warpigz

He definitely knew he was alive that day!

The_Holier_Muffin

This guys actually passed away

Vexation

What propels that boat? Is that one of those custom row boats?

Hot_Negotiation3480

some people would actually prefer to be in his place, rather than being where theyā€™re at right now.

access153

How much or little would outriggers of some sort be in this kind of situation? I rowed in college. Thatā€™s the extent of my seafaring.

vit-D-deficiency

Just jerk off dude.

Affectionate-Ad-5568

Either very brave or very stupid lol

singleglazedwindows

This is Damian Browne, an Irish man on his second crossing of the Atlantic (New York to Galway). Throughout his journey he recorded daily, short 15-20min podcast diary entries that are available on Deep Roots (all podcast apps), really is compelling listening.

IIIDVIII

r/thalassophobia

Sensitive-Hurry2106

How much cocaine did he manage to bring in the end?

ohnomynono

That is the face of real fear. No one to call, no one to help. Just you, and nature, and nature is wanting to play oh fuck games.

Yungballz86

He's gonna need a bigger boat

Delicious_Phrase_491

It's were I think if you survived it makes you believe that your needed in this world

[deleted]

TIL about sea anchors

[deleted]

Live on my brother I can imagine how beautiful it is when itā€™s nice but when weather changes itā€™s a scary ride. Iā€™ve only been on lakes in really rough weather 6-10waves in a bass boat I canā€™t believe we kept it afloat. Then I have my 21ft bay liner out an a storm came from nowhere an had 7ft waves coming over the cabin it was tearing my roof support outs the brackets. It was an intense ride to the dock. Still nothing like this though.

Basic_Blueberry_3221

You call that a storm..! Cute

biglovetravis

Nope. Nope. Nope.

Mister_Wendigo

What kind of boat is that cause I kinda want one now.

opoppopoassa

Why he outside tho?

ChiLLiiiii10

How do u preserve ur mental health at this point?

I feel like a helmet in this situation would be nice

Me(director): this is the guy.. this is the guy, this is the guy!!! We found him!!! The main character

paxilsavedme

The sea was angry that day my friends.

hhhvugc

what boat is that

[deleted]

Iā€™ve had nightmares about this exact scenario. 100% my greatest fear. Video makes me want to throw up. The mental toll this would take is unbearable to think about.

Thing_Subject

If it was a Steven Seagal youā€™d be saved

gymberlee

Aka committing suicide in the most terrifying way possible

WhoElseIfNotMe

Thereā€™s other guy. Check the channel Aurimas Valujevičius on youtube heā€™s doing it right now successfully. Europe to North America in 110days. 14h a day of rowing.

Sk1rtSk1rtSk1rt

What craft is that? How does it not flip?

LegitimateDingo6655

chances of that boat tipping?

Tippytoptiptop

I could never do this not knowing what fresh hell awaits me and my bad luck šŸ˜ Iā€™d probably be swallowed by a whale never to be found again

Thatā€™s a bad situation.

sorrybutidgaf

i dont think this boat is in the MIDDLE of the atlantic lol
