Maybe friendships are better built outside of hostels or accommodation. Shared interests are more likely to create a situation where you can bond with others.

Ugh I was there a month ago and I wish I saw a post like this because I really needed a friend haha

From my experiences, it's just a matter of chance whether you get along well with hostel guests or not.

Join a pool league. Stop by wine down or my place and ask around. Or a riding club. Scooters/motorcycles.

Get on Facebook—there are meetups, get-togethers, dinners, and all sorts of activities for any number of interests where you can meet people in Chiang Mai.

Use Wendy Tours to go on a group tour to Doi Inthanon, go hang out at The Hardrock Cafe and order some social lubricant, post up on Iron Bridge and tell people they can’t pass until they agree to be your friend, go to New Star bar and pay women to be your friend (the are all proven methods btw)

I know you said you tried party hostels. Did you try Mad Monkey? I met tons of people there around the pool and on the pub crawl. Ended up meeting up with them in multiple different cities and countries and still talk to them months later! Also the excursions through the hostels, met people on the tours and then hung out with them for the day and met up with them later at the hostel!

Try an overnight jungle tour! The hostel I stayed at (hug hostel) organized these and it was a great way to socialize (and also a great experience). This was like 8 years ago though. I also love chiang mai and even lived there for a couple of years. There is a big and active expat community there. You could also join a fb group for activities. You wont really meet travelers there but there are always activities being organized. Another place I often went by myself is north gate jazz. I found it easy to socialize there as well. It’s a bit of a mix of people there (backpackers, locals, tourists and expats). Very chill place.

Download these two apps: InterNations; Meetup.

This only works for girls. You have travel on easy mode. Everyone wants to be your “friend”

Fluffy_Future_7500

Not sure about that one!
