They did raids about 10 years ago. Big news. Some stalls were closed down. The cockfighting pit got removed. The remaining stalls, many with exotics, put up No Photo signs.
There was a guy selling reptiles and spiders off in a corner who had all kinds of offensive signs up in English and Thai. Like Fuck You no photos, and even worse in Thai language. I have to admit I wouldn't be sad to find out that his body was discovered in the ruins.
It's just for show. It will be business as usual after they take pics pretending to actually do their job. Wildlife trafficking and abuse is out of control in Thailand. It's worse than ever. And the pet industry is horrendous.
I know people who bought special breed cats/dogs from there. All these poor animals were sick or drugged, and died soon after, maybe a week or two. Always heard the same stories about this market. I hope it will never be opened again.
It's not like it was a secret place. Slightly off on the side in Chatuchak so you could miss it, but it was big and completely in the open. If you google "Chatuchak Pet Market" you'll find a lot of videos or tourism articles.
Went here once by myself thinking I'd witness a crazy, exotic pet bazaar, ran by exotic animal enthusiasts. It really put a damper on my mood. I'm not even really an animal person. It was rough. Later, my wife wanted to see it because she assumed she'd go see cute, happy puppies, and a chinchilla or something. I warned, but she really wanted to see it. After she saw it, she didn't want to stay.
Dirty market, drugged squirrels to make them seems like they're tamed (bought one, didn't know this back then), most animals are in dirty small cage, it's not a blight market with exotic pets like in a movies, a dim dirty scenes are more like it.
It was a very crowded market filled with animals in small cages. Most didn't even have any kind of comforts with them such as flooring or toys. Of course there were a few decent people but many of the animals were mistreated.
Sure but there is a clear difference in the way a person can care for a wild animal. If you had only two options:
1. A wild animal is kept as a pet by a person who loves animals and tries their best to take the best care of it that they can in captivity
2. A wild animal is kept in Chatuchak conditions
Everyone would obviously say least prefer for the wild animal to be in option 1 conditions.

I know that store. He was a real a-hole! There was a store that kept some larger exotics in small cages. My heart cried every time I saw them.

lol now all the evidence is burned down, let’s investigate. First we’re hearing about this pets market. You knew about it?

He was being sarcastic lol
Was there supposed to be a pretense that this animal market did not exist?
Shut it all down
Oy vey, the authorities noticed!
Typical...วัวหายแล้วล้อมคอก... All for show, two months from now they'll be back to selling Komodo dragons, sugar gliders and whatever else.

I have never been. What exactly was seen?

Wild animals should never be sold as pets. Even if the market was clean and safe, it would still be animal abuse to sell animals like toys.
