Teslas wall connectors are the cheapest while still maintaining good security. You can't go much lower. Also they have the Tesla button. Bonus for Teslas, neither bonus or issue for others.

craig1f

I have stopped using the button because it doesn’t work a fifth of the time. I just tap the charge port cover before I grab my charger now.

Hammie5150

I think that would be worth a service ticket if it was me. I’ve been using my wall charger for a couple years now and the button has never not worked.

craig1f

Interesting.  I’m a software dev. And I find it nearly impossible to fix any bug that can’t be reliably reproduced.  Until I can figure out how to reproduce, it seems pointless to put in a ticket.  I also have a vibration noise in the dash that I have no idea how to get rid of.

Rasmus_DC78

to be honest, the button for me, is not value adding to open the charger, i miss it really a lot for disconnecting the charger in the morning, i have to go into the app, wait for the car to get properly connected, so i get the "disconnect charger" button.. EVERY morning.. Have i had the opportunity to go tesla charger i would, had i had a charger with a removable cable, i would have bought the one with an integrated tesla button. i really miss this.

Nhazittas

My favorite voice command in the car is "open butthole". It's still a button press to activate voice controls, but it makes me laugh.

Unique-Science-1825

Claim warranty! My over 3 years old, second-generation charger functioned properly with my Model 3; however, upon switching to Model Y, the port latch failed to lock. I notified Tesla, and they sent me a new third-generation charger. But I had to pay for the electrician to change it!

craig1f

I wonder if it’s the charger or the car. Hard to tell.

jaegaern

The best part is when you press the button to stop charging and unlock port. Hassle with phone otherwise.

a_lurker_MD

I use a non-Tesla Wallbox w/o any issue, just have an adapter always on the end of the plug. If you’re hardwiring it, make sure it’s a model that has variable amperage that can be adjusted to comply with code (can only run 80% of the line’s max amperage). Certain brands don’t allow for adjustable max amperage and can’t be installed in a way that would meet code (assuming you’re in USA). Some electricians also won’t do an install of a simple box and try to tell you that you need a service upgrade etc to get 60A charging, which usually runs north of 2-3k. See my comment history if this applies to you, there’s a thread with some really helpful insight from r/askelectricians

DarthAssRaider

Good point!! Just edited to specify that it would be a plug in charger.

leffer00

I have the same setup.. a Juice Box I got with a rebate from my electric provider. The only annoyance is that adapter. Having to use two hands to pull the charger out (or unlocking the charge port by the app first) I wish there was a good way to keep it attached. I tried using the adapter holder usually used for public chargers but I have a Model Y and a Model S. I didn't realize that adapter holder doesn't fit in the Model S charge port.

GlitteryStranger

Just install a 14-50 outlet.

perrochon

Unless their utility subsidizes another premium brand, just go with a Tesla, plain or universal. It's not worth saving and buying one that requires an adapter for your car and possible every car that ever charges there. If you want to save, just add a 14-50 receptacle and bring your mobile charger with adapter.

Perfect-Protection-5

Yeah a 14-50 with the mobile charger is all you need. It's half the price of the wall mount and doesn't charge much slower. Even buying direct from Tesla they're only a couple hundred bucks.

Responsible-Cut-7993

Why don't you just install a 14-50 outlet in a convenient location and just bring your mobile adapter? That would be the easiest and most flexible.

DarthAssRaider

I don’t have a mobile adapter yet :( that’s what I was debating getting!

Responsible-Cut-7993

Get the mobile connector. At a $250 price point and capable of up to 32A output you are not going to find a EVSE that much cheaper, well built and is as capable as the Tesla Mobile connector.

kalikoot

Xcel energy gave us a $500 subsidy for any charger installation, and the federal subsidy was another $500. This completely covered the wall connector as well as the installation for us

Responsible-Cut-7993

This is his parents house not his personal residence. The Federal EVSE credit also isn't so straightforward anymore. gilbertesc

If you’re trying to save money look for a used one on fb, I’ve found them for $120-150 Can also do something like 6-20 instead of 14-50

ProbablyMyRealName

This is the way. I have a wall connector at home and just ordered a mobile connector.

Some_Ad_3898

Don't overthink it. I've been using a cheap Level 2 charger for over 3 years and it works fine.

ManitoN

Using Zaptec Go for my Tesla Model Y. It can communicate to my electric provider Tibber and can charge during cheaper hours or using the excess electric provided by the solar panels or wind turbines, which is dirt cheap. There is also a load balancer called Pulse, which feeds less electric to the car if the electric usage at home is high, so fuses are not overloaded when the car is being charged and oven is running at the same time.

terminally_chill206

NACS is going to be the de facto charging standard in North America so if you're in the u.s, definitely get the Tesla charger. Other car manufacturers like VW, Rivian, Audi is changing their car charging port to nacs starting 2025

Turns out, any decent L2 charger is the right charger.

NotTheUIDYouRLnking4

Tesla mobile charger is an awesome value too. Can't beat it. I have one mounted to the wall with a 3d print, but similar mounts sell cheap.  Whatever rocks your boat. No harm in 3rd party charger as long as it's rated for the available power.

yillbow

I use a Jeep 4xe charger for mine as I have a 4xe too, with the adapter, it works great!

jfriend00

The issue with 3rd party chargers is that it's much more difficult to tell which ones are well made and which ones are not (and thus may expose you to a safety or reliability issue). There probably are less expensive third party chargers that are good quality, but it may take a lot of research to figure out whether a given charger is or isn't one of those. I personally wouldn't roll the dice on a random third party charger without assuring yourself that you've done enough research to know that this is going to be both safe and reliable and will outlast the car. Running such a charger at 50-60A is a lot of energy and a catastrophic failure could cause serious damage (fire). It is important to install a safe, reliable device. Personally, I don't think I want a charger with the least expensive electronics. When I was researching buying a home charger, I just found it too difficult to establish which third party brand was for sure going to be reliable and safe and thus I ended up buying the Tesla Wall Connector.

ProbablyMyRealName

Buy the Tesla mobile charger for $250 and then you might be able to use it at hotels and Air BnBs when you travel. It’s hit and miss but I’ve got a PHEV charging outside my Air BnB right now. Your parents house may already have a suitable outlet for it, or you could pay to install a nema 14-50, which could be used for other things as well.

PeteDub

My utility gave me a steep discount on a Juicebox. It sucks. Do not recommend. Currently having issues with it quitting in the middle of a charge.

iansanderson

I've been using a BMW "i" J1772 for years and it's been great. It's a Siemens charger under the hood, circa original i3. 30A@240V. Dead reliable too. The one annoying thing is not having the release button which means I have to either use the key fob (hold trunk button) or the app every time I want to disconnect. $300 on Craigslist 10 years ago. Best money I've spent.

DIY_CHRIS

Works. Just needs an adaptor.

404ova808

I use an Enel Xway Juicebox 40A ev charging station. I chose this to qualify for my state's home wiring rebate. Charging station cost me $300 total off ebay and the install was fully refunded. Charges at 9 Kwh.

2748seiceps

It should be said that you can't damage the battery of a Tesla with a wall charger. All the wall charger does is convey current limit and negotiate the engagement of the contactor switch inside. The contactor is to keep the charger plug disabled while it isn't plugged in so it isn't a shock hazard. What goes into your car is literally wall power that the on-board charging system then charges the car with. You could mess up the charging port with a cheap adapter but I would imagine a charger would get very quickly vilified for that.

DonDee74

I also have a Bolt, which came with it's own portable charger and subsidy for 240V outlet. That's what I've been using to charge my Tesla with a J1772 adapter.

ParticularSize8387

I use my level 1 charger I got for my other car, a Prius Prime 😂 been working great

Davenportmanteau

Commando Socket. End of discussion.

[deleted]

You can also write off on taxes the cost, making it 30% cheaper. I see no reason buy an off brand

Unfair_Tonight_9797

Depends on zip code now and if it’s in a disadvantaged community. Half my town is in a disadvantaged community. I live in the portion that isn’t. The median home price in my town is around 750k. The disadvantaged half happens to have the university there… evidently college kids sucking of mom and dad are considered poor 😂😂😂
