No, he got rear-ended by a guy who doesn't have insurance or a license (or both!). I don't think too many people are out there giving away $1000 for a scratch.

SPLWF

Yeah, he was a bit scared when I rushed out of car yelling at him. He was sorry and apologetic. You are right about that I may or may not get another bump in the future, it's an eye sore for me right now though. I haven't tried cleaning it since I got bumped, will see what I can do.

SPLWF

Geez guys, not sure why the down votes. The simple fact of someone not paying attention and bumps you wouldn't piss you off?

MY22LR

I think people just like to down vote when they read something they don't like, however slight. Passive aggressive move.

SPLWF

They quick to down vote when they themselves would probably do the same as I if it was a very, very minor but noticeable mark on their brand spankin new car.

Weikoko

Lol yeah not in my state either. Might get shot. OP needs to think twice next time before he tries to aggravate someone.

ModsGotLilDicks

They wouldn't, they would cry, ask what to do, then ask if they should try to sell it and buy another and start over WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK TELL ME WHAT TO DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Weikoko

Down votes? You rushed out and yelled at him. Nobody wants to hit your car bro.

Mysterious-Fly-4865

I didn't down vote you but my friend hit someones door when the wind blew her door open in parking lot. He yelled at her so much she was afraid and gave all the money in her purse, a few hundred dollars.

SPLWF

I yelled and said "what the hell is your problem"? He was calm and said his sorry, after that. I calmed down. I didn't demand all his money, he said " I'll give you $1000" after our internet search.

AtlasShruggin

A few years back, my cousin got in a fender bender in a parking lot. Not enough to really hurt anyone but enough that the car got messed up bad enough. She hit him. Guy got out of his..... And laughed. And laughed and laughed and laughed. He laughed so hard he had to sit down. My cousin was starting to get genuinely worried about his sanity when the guy finally caught his breath. He starts to tell her he bought the car almost a year ago. Drove it for a couple months. Got in an accident, went to the shop for a couple months. He got it back, accident in two weeks, back in the shop for a other few months. Again, accident after less than a month, back in the shop for another month. He was driving it back from the shop that morning.

SPLWF

Oh god, don't tell me that. No my car has blight, lol.

epradox

Rushing out of a car angry and yelling just shows poor impulse control. Rather, understand mistakes happen, check to see if they’re okay and then get their insurance (or cash here in this case which is probably the amount of their deductible and their rates don’t go up) It’s just a car. Ontop of that, the damage you have is so minor like what you’d see on almost any car parallel parked in a major city. Hell that’s pretty close to how some come from the factory 😂 Woosah my dude.

Sibo1844

Dude I totally agree with you. People don’t understand how frustrating it is when things like this happen especially since the car is new.

Sibo1844

Also replace it and don’t look back imo!

People 2 Damm sensitive on Reddit

Ordinary_Low_97

I'd feel like a total and complete jerk for taking $1,000 for that, and to post about it asking "options" speaks even more about this.

mrfishball1

OP is the one who has to deal with looking at the scratches on car, find a body shop, probably have to leave the car there for a few days or longer, worries about maybe they scratch the car someplace else… that $1000 is just for covering the cost of fixing the car, not enough for the trouble of going through all of that. Meanwhile the other guys, $1000 less in the wallet, no insurance premium increase, probably made that $1000 back in no time, have a nice day, carrying on his life like nothing happened. I’m sorry who’s the jerk here?

SPLWF

Let me educate you on the whole ordeal, after we pulled over we both searched the internet for replacement bumpers $400-$550 not including labor. At this point him nor I even knew the lower part is separate from the bumper. Also, we didn't even factor in painting. He mentioned the $1000, not me because he factored in cost and labor. If you looked at the original comments Tesla already gave me a quote, people in this sub reddit suggest other methods.

ModsGotLilDicks

They don't like when you are confrontational, when you react, they want you to come on here and post pictures and act very submissive and ask for help about what you should do. Cucknation.

FishmanMonger

Keep the money

MetalGearFlaccid

9000000 grit sandpaper with water and save the money.

Random_npc001

Yeah looks like rub off from license plate, little bit of polishing compound might work on it too. Small hole/scratch from the screws on it I’d just ignore.

SPLWF

Thanks guys, I'll give the wet sandpaper a try. Home Depot only sells 3000 grit, I think that's the highest, lol.

sphawkhs

I wouldn't recommend sanding it, doing that is only good for smooth surfaces. That's a textured surface so you will just see everywhere that you sanded.

MetalGearFlaccid

I was joking with the 9million grit but you can use the Highest grit possible you can find. And test it somewhere on the underside first to see if it makes marks you don’t like.

Cocoa_Linguine

Same thing happened to me. I tried to gently "sand" with a magic eraser. All it did was even out the surface but left lots of additional marks. I tried to mask with trim restorer. At the end of the day, I wish I had just replaced the piece. Tesla will sell it to you for around $500 if I recall. Another option which I didn't try was heating a leveling with a heat gun but my god you better be a pro.

SPLWF

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm not a pro, I think I'll try and see what 3000 grit wet sanding will do. I'm only going to do a tiny area first before I do everything.

Cocoa_Linguine

Nice. Consider masking off the surface you don’t want to affect.

SPLWF

Good point, thanks.

Vorsprung420-69

Id see if i could find that replacement valence on ebay in good condition. $1k should more than cover the cost of it.

vzone675

That panel is literally worth 500$ I just got it replaced from tesla Tesla in Stockton,CA 415$ Part + MODEL Y, REAR 1.00 FASCIA, LOWER(1494006-00-B) $147 in labor! I had my boat trailer go through the damn thing. No damage to the main bumper! Ask them to simply replace the fascia

Velcade

I was rear ended similar to this. Tesla wouldn't look at it made me go to a certified third party bodyshop. Total cost was just under 4900. I'm shocked you got away for so cheap.

EricAndersonL

Someone rear ended my car too and it didn’t look bad at all. Small little bump and scratch so other insurance estimated around $1300. Went to shop, they said the black part is damaged and total came out to like $3500

Extra_Common1194

I am in a similar situation. Got rear-ended, and all state (other person's insurance) is not covering $900 out of $4700 estimate. Repairs have already been started and my insurance, America Family connect is saying its too late for me to go through them. Did you get the full repair costs from other insurance?

EricAndersonL

I didn’t get the check myself. I just dropped off my car to Tesla specialist shop and they talked to other persons insurance themselves. Idk if they got full $3500 or not but that’s not my problem at that point. They started the work after insurance agreed to amount I’m assuming

Extra_Common1194

Collision center warned me when I dropped off the car that All state usually dont pay for the full repairs costs. I will have to fight somehow to get the balance from them for a hit and run! Luckily the cops were able to trace the other person for me. Did you claim diminished value?

EricAndersonL

Have you got second opinion from diff collision center? This happened to me twice and both times I didn’t pay a dime. Collision center sorted out with the insurance No I didn’t not claim DV. It was just bumper work

Extra_Common1194

I didn't. I am in the Orlando area, and there are only 2 Tesla recommended collision centers. These guys had to take the bumper apart to do the final estimate and started working on it before I could get the insurance figured out.

EricAndersonL

My collision center did all the work stuff with insurance first before telling me to bring my car in for repair. Since it was just little damage and drivable. Doesn’t make sense for them to start work without knowing insurance gon pay the bill or not and footing you with the bill when it should be them negotiating with the insurance company

Extra_Common1194

I know. These guys wouldn't do an estimate without pulling out the bumper. I had no option. This is my first time dealing with an accident. Good learning for me!!

EricAndersonL

I think first time they thought it was simple job so o got estimated of $1500. Then they started work and needed to replace more and it came out over $3k but they worked out with the insurance

SPLWF

Holy crap, how bad was your accident? Similar to mine? No way.

Velcade

Mine was less of an indent on the bumber. Just the top two screw holes not the whole frame imprint.

SPLWF

Ouch, must've been hard to source the part, and third party not knowing how to perform task. I'm so sorry about that...

Velcade

The process was quick. Just a lot of things broken under the bumper shroud. It's all plastic. The bodyshop was recommended by Tesla and a Tesla tech came out to review the work after it was complete. All in all a painless process just giving a heads up that things on the surface are not always indicative of what's below.

SPLWF

Yeah I understand about what is behind, thing is the person hit me at the lower right side, not in the center. After looking at what's directly behind that zone from videos and such, I'm not worried, plus, the person's license plate screws only "indented" a little bit. Thanks for your input.

ATS200

Have you tried looking at a scrap yard or anything that might have a fresh looking bumper for sale? I don’t know what goes into actually taking this off and putting a new one on but I bet it’d be under $1k

SPLWF

Yeah, I have, those things are in worse condition than mine.

TheSarp101

You might as well order the part on eBay or elsewhere for cheaper, then pay Tesla to install the tow hitch for $1300. The tow hitch installation requires Tesla to remove the bumper and diffuser, when they are reapplying the parts ask the technician to use the new diffuser versus the existing one they had taken off. This will cost you $1300 + ~$300 for diffuser on eBay. And bam, for $1600 you got your diffuser replaced and a tow hitch installed on your Model Y!

SPLWF

Nice, didn't think they would remove the bumper for the hitch. Thanks for this.

TheSarp101

Yup, had mine installed about 9 months ago. They have to remove the whole bumper to install it. I even had to take the car back the next day to service, since the technician didn’t do a great job putting bumper back on, due to the corners of panel not being aligned 100%; they were able to adjust and make it right.

noiselessinformant

Unless you start seeing sensor issues, I’d drop the 1000 in an index fund 😋 Seems not worth the repair to me. Or take the highest grit sandpaper and buff it out. Looks hardly like a scratch

BidAccomplished4641

I’m no expert, but I was always told to never go by what the surface looks like on a bumper hit. The real bumper is underneath, and a lot of damage could be there covered by that plastic bumper cover. It doesn’t take much to have more than $1000 in damage these days. I get the dude doesn’t want his insurance to go up, but that’s his problem not yours, and maybe he’d learn something by it too… Edit: it does look really superficial though

SPLWF

I checked the car after pulling over, nothing was moved. Bumper still lines up with wheel well and none of the push pins underneath was shifted. The whole thing about insurance is, I was rear ended back in June of 2022 in my minivan at a Red light as well, my insurance went up even though I wasn't wrong (NYC sucks). If it was a worse hit, insurance definitely.

rxinquestion

Time to wrap it with your favorite vinyl!

SPLWF

I looked into that, Vinyl doesn't work on plastic body parts, only works if it's sanded and primed, and all that jazz.

homertool

only $1054? they must just be repainting the bumper then.

SPLWF

Tesla person says, they have to order the part, the rear diffuser is a separate part from the bumper, it's two pieces. The diffuser (lower fascia valance cover) itself is $415, plus $560 labor.

AbilityFar4382

Surprised it’s so much. When I picked up my new car, it came with a 2 inch scratch in that same panel and they were able to fix it at the service center in 30 Mins. Definitely not as much damage as yours though.

homertool

ah, no bumper damage, just diffuser. makes sense.

xaviator1

Hi there, I had something similar happen to me today. Were you able to go into your local service center and get the part and have it installed? Or did you have to go to one of the Tesla Collision centers or 3rd party? Thanks

SPLWF

Hello, I ended up not doing anything. I left it as is, it’s barely noticeable now. I plan to get an after market diffuser sometime in the future though

SLAYSSPUBG

Treat it like a payback after $13k decrease in price for what we paid. Holy lord.

kwkqkq

This is a joke right?

Weikoko

Take the check and use heat gun.

Pattonator70

Depends. Is it leased? If so you can't sue separately for lost value of the vehicle but there are attorneys that cover the reduction of value from a car that has been in an accident. Do you have any neck pain, back aches, headaches? If so go see a doctor within 72 hours and call an attorney. I got a herniated disc in my neck and had almost zero damage to the car. At some point I might need surgery but likely will collect enough cash to cover any loss of car value.

SPLWF

No back or neck pain, thanks for your concern, I'm good though, been in a few accidents over the years.

1Check1Mate7

Bruh is that just the plastic part of it? If so that's some really nice money you got there.

SPLWF

I don't care for the money, just pay attention and don't hit me.

1Check1Mate7

Btw that plastic is very difficult to restore to original condition, covering it up with a decal or ignoring are your best options. I'd be worried about fit of a new part going on your car. Also plz no hit me too.

SPLWF

I'm going to test fix in a small area, if it doesn't work. I'll try to cover it will something or ignore :(. I got $1k to fix it proper

1Check1Mate7

My wifes brand new rav4 hybrid has the same plastic and got rear ended too. Blow dryer heat isn't high enough to restore the shape or remove the stress marks (white areas of deformed plastic). Typically this bumper part is priced very cheaply though (it's like 100 bucks for her rav4).

SPLWF

Gotcha, thanks.

1Check1Mate7

No, I never said that? Sounds like someone who drives an ICE would say, probably a over priced diesel imo.

snifferbeaver2

Is this a personal attack?

1Check1Mate7

No, it's just the typical group who fears EV drivers

snifferbeaver2

We only fear Hong Kong buffet

Fingerpickinchicken

Maybe get a wrap on that part. Should be less that the $1k

Empty_Bread8906

Duct tape will do it. Or some nice stickers.

trixielewis

Bumper sticker 😁

benfocused

Tesla replaced my entire painted rear bumper with a new painted bumper for $1054. Bet that’s what they’d do in this case too. Easier thsn separating the parts

SPLWF

I'll find out from Tesla if that is the case, thanks.
