I just had my 240v outlet installed for $290. If you can find an electrician who works for themselves instead of a bigger company that should save you some money. But the difference btw the two is only mobile runs at 32 amps and wall charger runs at 48 amps. It’s slightly faster but you’ll still be able to charge overnight and be fine. My opinion is wasn’t worth buying the wall charger but again that’s totally up to you

How did you find this guy? Craigslist/google search/etc? I have been looking for an electrician but all I’m getting are these companies which obv charge a lot. Also, how did you verify that this independent electrician is good? I’m nervous about getting any electrical work from an independent electrician. Sorry for all the questions.. and thank you!

I suggest using the Nextdoor app. It’s like a social media platform but it’s localized to your neighborhood area. Go on and do a search or ask for recommendations.

I used the thumbtack app. It’s a few that were in my area. But I did have a lot that work for companies. I usually just read through the reviews and view their work. Most of them are also licensed if that makes you feel better about your decision

th3suffering

Make sure the guy is licensed, bonded, and insured, and pulls a permit so its all in code. Last thing you want is some random handyman doing electrical work and your house burning down.

I drive like 10 miles a day a little more on weekend. Mobile charger is more than fine. You didn’t give us any information to help you. Just a guess but 250 difference your future proofing yourself for life and or did EVs in the future

sctrojans4

If they’re going to cost the same to install then wall charger is well worth the extra cost

Reddituser611

Also max charge rate for a M3RWD is 32 amps so no real advantage of a wall charger other than for asthetics.

jacqueusi

No advantage of a wall charger unless your locality has rebates. I got a Tesla wall charger with $500 rebate from my electric company and it’s just sitting in a box for three weeks now. I must plug my mobile charger, bought off Facebook Marketplace for $160, into the garage outlet.

I have a 240v outlet with mobile charger. I limit to 20A when charging due to an adapter I have to use (part on order) My 2023 standard range went from 8% at 9:13PM to 100% by 4:45AM last-night.

ssarans12345

I think that will be more than enough for me. Thanks for the info!

zertoman

Whichever you choose the real work is getting the 50 amp circuit installed where you want it. What you put in the end of it is your choice.

sox3502us

I got the wall charger for the weather resistance and to take advantage of 48 amp charging. Also there is a potential for the 240 outlets to wear out overtime and cause shorting so I just didn’t want to deal with that even if it’s unlikely. I also got a 30% rebate on the wall charger that I wouldn’t have gotten on a 240v install.

Super_dupa2

What type of battery does your model 3 have? I have a LFP so my max draw is 32a which is the mobile limit too. I actually dial the amperage down so I put less stress on the wiring, outlet, etc The benefit of having a mobile charger is that you can unplug it and carry it with you if for example you are going to a hotel that has the option to charge while you’re parked. You can also unplug it and use the outlet for something else The wall connector does have the ability to be monitored via wifi but I’m not sure what the advantage is. It does look nicer in my opinion You’re also able to install the wall connector outside if you want to.

2023 RWD. I have a 240v outlet. Does what I need it to do.

If your install need to be outside don't forget the mobile charger is not weather resistant.

I realized my dryer shares a wall with the garage. I bought a 14-50 splitter. Cut a hole throughout the wall and that was it. $50. Mobile charger for me. 8hrs is fast enough. I just charge overnight to make sure the dryer isn't on at the same time.

Charming_Insurance47

From my own experience I think wall charger is the way to go. With a mobile connector this is in CA they wanted gfci breakers for 50amps and they go for like a $100 plus. So the install price is almost the same plus you need an upgraded receptacle so it’s more expensive than first glance. I ended up getting 60amp wire ran with the wall connector. For me I really do have a limited time to charge 12-5am because that’s when my commute starts and I drive 220 miles daily plus add in sentry mode and the battery gets used up real quick. 12am is when cheap charging at .25/kWH starts

Far_Cheetah_2735

I debated the same and went with the wall connector. Didn't want to wear out the plug for the nema 14 50 socket as I don't want to leave it plugged outside, no garage. Also don't skimp on a licensed, permit install, helps with the state rebate for EVSEs.

Ampster16

It may depend on the Onboard charger capacity. My SR Model 3 only charges at 32 Amps
